A family in North Carolina is weathering two tragedies after a husband and wife died just minutes apart from each other following a month-long battle with the novel coronavirus.

Johnny Lee Peoples, 67, and his wife Cathy Darlene Peoples, 65, died of COVID-19 on Sept. 2 at Novant Health Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, according to their joint obituary.

The couple had been struggling with coronavirus for 30 days when they were placed in a room together for a final goodbye, their surviving son Shane Peoples said.

“Everything just went south, everything just got worse,” he told WBTV. “The next day [medical staff] put them in the same room, same ICU room, they put their hands together, the nurses gathered around and they passed within four minutes of each other.”

“They were married 48 years, been together 50, they walked hand in hand for those 50 years,” Shane said of his parents.

Both natives of North Carolina, Johnny was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and worked for the NC Department of Corrections and Cathy worked as teacher assistant at Salisbury Academy and a lab technician at LabCorp, according to an online tribute.

In their obituary, Johnny was described by his relatives as a man who “loved coaching youth sports, playing music and building the family tree,” while Cathy’s interests included crafting, listening to music and playing cards.

Their loved ones said in the tribute that the pair both enjoyed fishing and “spending quality time with family and friends.”

Johnny and Cathy are survived by their three children, nine grandchildren and numerous relatives. They are also survived by their beloved poodles, Sammy and Macy.

“The lives of Mom and Dad were stolen by a virus that many joke about on a daily basis or just straight out believe it’s a hoax of some sort. Both of them took this pandemic seriously and still got sick, still died…” Shane wrote in a personal tribute on Facebook. “My parents weren’t just a blessing for me, my brother, my sister, our spouses, and our children. They were a blessing to every person that met them.”

“They both loved their family very much and did anything and everything they could possibly do for them,” he continued. “I had some pretty darn awesome parents.”

In his post, Shane also encouraged people to wear a mask, wash their hands and practice social distancing amid the ongoing pandemic.

“Hold your family close,” he added. “Treat every moment with them like it’s your last, it could very well be. Love and keep on loving.”

Cheers to the bride and groom!

A Nebraska couple toasted 60 years of marriage with an adorable photo shoot in the outfits they first wore to say “I do.”

Marvin and Lucille Stone got married in Sterling in 1960, and have lived happily ever after ever since.

In celebration of their diamond anniversary, photographer Katie Autry took outdoor portraits of the couple in their wedding best – including the gown that the bride made herself.

The pictures quickly went viral on Facebook with hundreds of likes and comments. Lucille Stone told Fox News that she and her husband have been “just blown away” by the response.

“My dad cried. He was the only one that cried,” she told KHGI-TV of the big day six decades ago. “My mother beamed and they both thought Marvin was just perfect, and that does help when your parents like the person that you’re marrying.”

As children of the Great Depression, Marvin Stone agreed that he and his wife share similar values.

“We both had farm backgrounds. We both were free enterprise people and we had similar goals in life, and we were both in teaching,” he told the outlet. “We were just kind of together in our concepts of what to do and what direction to go and so forth.”

To that end, the couple cited their faith in one another as the fuel for both good times and bad.

“We don’t always agree, but we have the main focus that we’ve always had, so it just kind of moves along,” Marvin Stone explained. “We have had similar values and so it has worked out pretty well and, I don’t know, we never spent any time considering separating.”

“From day one we have assumed marriage is forever,” his wife echoed. “You do what you have to do and by no means have we been perfect in our marriage.”

“We’ve had arguments. We’ve had disagreements, but on the big things we’re pretty much on the same track,” she said.

Three children and 60 years later, in a word of advice to other romantics, the Stones stressed good communication and open mindedness as the secrets to lasting happiness.

A Florida couple on Key West that tested positive for the coronavirus was arrested for defying a quarantine order, local officials said Thursday.

Neighbors videotaped Jose Antonio Freire Interian and Yohana Anahi Gonzalez flouting the requirement and then handed the telltale tape over to the Key West police, authorities said.

“There were complaints from the neighborhood of them continuing to be outside, going about normal life functions,” Key West City Manager Greg Veliz told The Miami Herald. “An officer took the video to the judge and the judge signed the warrant.”

Interian, 24, and Gonzalez, 27, appear to be among the first people who have been jailed in Florida for breaking quarantine.

“As far as I know, these are the first arrests of this kind in Monroe County,” Brandie Peretz, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County, told NBC News.

Word of their arrest came as Florida on Thursday reported a record 253 new coronavirus deaths, according to the latest NBC News tally of coronavirus cases and fatalities. Nationwide, the death toll from a pandemic that Trump has claimed would “just disappear” rose overnight to 152,717, NBC News figures show.

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

The grim new Florida death toll number came on the heels of state health officials reporting 216 deaths on Wednesday and 186 deaths of Tuesday, both of which were new daily highs in a pandemic that has been hitting the state especially hard in recent months.

So far, Florida has logged a total of 456,105 cases and 6,586 deaths, according to state statistics.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a staunch ally of President Donald Trump, has been harshly criticized for his handling of the coronavirus crisis and stoked more anger earlier this month by referring to the rising case numbers as a “blip.”

And many Florida residents like Maria Bavaro of Lake Worth Beach are very angry. Bavaro told NBC News her 87-year-old father Antonio Franco was in an assisted living center when he died in May of COVID-19.

“I feel like we should’ve never put him there,” Bavaro said of her dad, a hard-working Korean War veteran from Brooklyn who raised three daughters. “I feel like the government failed him. I feel like the state of Florida failed him.”

“I feel like we were robbed of his last few months of life,” she said.

Interian and Gonzalez, who had been ordered to quarantine after testing positive on July 21, were taken into custody Wednesday evening, Adam Linhardt, a spokesman for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, told NBC News. They were sent to the Stock Island Detention Center where they were placed in “negative pressure rooms” where the air is not recirculated into other parts of the jail.

“The idea is to keep them apart from the general population and keep them in a place where they can’t infect anybody else,” Linhardt said. “We’ve had people in those rooms before we’ve suspected of having it. If they show symptoms, that’s where people are quarantined.”

Each was hit with misdemeanor charges of violating the state law that requires isolation or quarantine in a public health emergency and violating emergency management.

Conviction on those charges could result in up to 60 days behind bars.

Interian posted bond and was released early Thursday while Gonzalez remains behind bars, Linhardt said.

In other coronavirus-related developments:

  • Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain died at age 74 from complications from COVID-19. Cain had tested positive a week after he attended Trump’s June 20 campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While it wasn’t immediately clear where he contracted the deadly virus, Cain had defended the event, writing in an op-ed, “The media worked very hard to scare people out of attending the Trump campaign rally last Saturday night in Tulsa.” Cain was also photographed not wearing a mask at the rally. Several Trump campaign staffers and others also tested positive for COVID-19 after the rally.
  • Jobless claims rose for a second week in a row while the GDP fell by a record 33 percent as the thriving economy Trump inherited from his predecessor continued to be battered by the pandemic. More than 1.43 million people filed for unemployment benefits for the first time last week, according to the Department of Labor. It was the second-straight week that the number has risen, and the 19th week in a row that the U.S. had seen more than a million claims.
  • McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said the fast food chain would sic the cops on any customer who defies their mask-wearing mandate — but only after they first try to reason with the refusenik. “In the event that we do have someone who’s unwilling to wear a mask, we’ve done training around de-escalation,” Kempczinski said on “CBS This Morning.” “Ultimately we’re not going to be asking our crew people to put themselves in harm’s way. If someone is unwilling to wear a mask and comply with our rules, that might be where we might bring in law enforcement.” On Wednesday, the president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store union, Stuart Appelbaum, called on store owners to hire security guards and empower managers after a spate of sometimes violent incidents that pitted angry customers against workers trying to get them to wear masks. “It’s not the job of the employees to enforce the store rules on face masks.”
  • The Philadelphia Phillies shut down Citizens Bank Park “until further notice” after a member of the coaching staff and one of the home clubhouse staffers tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced in a statement. Earlier, a member of the visiting clubhouse staff also tested positive. The announcement came in the wake of a three-game series with the Miami Marlins. Seventeen players and two coaches have tested positive since Friday.
  • Citing federal privacy rules, Tennessee state officials announced they would not collect or release to the public information about new coronavirus cases in the schools, The Tennessean reported. Instead, state health department spokeswoman Shelley Walker said they would will encourage individual districts to track COVID-19 cases as the schools reopen in an effort to “best understand the burden of disease in their jurisdiction and take appropriate steps to mitigate further spread of illness.” Critics called foul. “It would seem irresponsible for the state to just look the other way and not track that data,” said Deborah Fisher of the Tennessee Coalition for Open Government. As of Thursday, there were 100,822 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 1,020 deaths reported in the state.
  • Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers issued a mask mandate starting Saturday and running through Sept. 28 as the state has seen a significant rise in new cases. “We need a statewide approach to get Wisconsin back on track,” Evers said. “We know that masks and face coverings will save lives. While I know emotions are high when it comes to wearing face coverings in public, my job as governor is to put people first and to do what’s best for the people of our state, so that’s what I am going to do.” As of Thursday, Wisconsin had 54,988 confirmed cases and 918 deaths.
  • Mississippi set a new record for coronavirus deaths in a day with 48 reported Thursday and a new record for reported cases with 1,775. Arizona also hit a new record for the number of pandemic deaths in a day with 172 reported Thursday. Both states are led by Republican governors who are loyal to Trump and who have been harshly criticized for reopening their states as the number of cases were still climbing.

A couple, filmed in a viral video wearing masks with Nazi swastikas emblazoned on them, will be banned from shopping at a Minnesota Walmart for at least one year, police said Monday.

The ugly incident unfolded Saturday at the store’s location in Marshall, Minnesota, which is about 150 miles west of Minneapolis and approximately 100 miles northeast of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, authorities and company officials said.

In the tweeted video, which had received 3.2 million views by late Monday morning, shoppers could be seen confronting the swastika-wearing pair as they paid for their goods.

Local governments and retailers across the nation have enforced codes and rules for people to wear masks in public to slow spread of the coronavirus. But some Americans have refused to follow those orders, saying such mandates are unjust.

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

And for months, President Donald Trump had accused mask wearers of being “politically correct” or said they were donning the protective equipment as an act of defiance against him (earlier this month he called mask-wearing “patriotic”).

The shoppers were apparently protesting the mask requirements as being the equivalent of Nazi-like demands, as opposed to espousing Nazi ideology themselves. “If you vote for Biden, you are going to be in Nazi Germany,” the female Walmart shopper said in the video, in reference to Trump’s Democratic presidential rival, Joe Biden.

Officers responded to that Walmart at 11:46 a.m. because the man and woman “were causing a disturbance,” according to a statement by Marshall Police Sgt. Jason Buysse.

The shoppers, who were not identified, were issued trespassing notices which will ban them returning to that southwest Minnesota location for at least the next year, Buysse said.

Earlier this month, Walmart began requiring all shoppers to wear facial coverings inside its stores, as America continues to struggle with the coronavirus pandemic.

Walmart said in statement that Saturday’s incident in Marshall, Minnesota, was “unacceptable” and pleaded with shoppers to wear masks.

“We strive to provide a safe and comfortable shopping environment for all our customers and will not tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment in any aspect of our business,” according to the company statement.

“We are asking everyone to wear face coverings when they enter our stores for their safety and the safety of others and it’s unfortunate that some individuals have taken this pandemic as an opportunity to create a distressing situation for customers and associates in our store.”

There’s “mask Nazis” and then there’s these two jerks.

A man and woman in Minnesota marched through a Marshall Walmart donning red masks adorned with giant swastikas, video shows.

“If you vote for Biden, you’re going to be [living] in Nazi Germany. That’s what it’s going to be like,” the woman says in video shot and posted to Facebook by shopper Raphaela Mueller.

“You’re literally wearing a Nazi flag right now,” another shopper retorts.

“We literally had a f–king war over this. The Nazis lost. Please don’t wear those masks,” Mueller adds.

The woman responds by griping that her fellow patrons “aren’t getting it.”

“I’m trying to tell you: If you vote for Biden, you’re going to have socialism,” she says.

Police called to the scene warned the 56-year-old man and 64-year-old woman that they would face arrest if they return to the Walmart, the Star Tribune reported.

Both left without incident, the newspaper said.

I was born and raised in Germany, and I grew up hearing about my great-grandmother who fought in the underground against the first wave of Nazis in the 1930s and 40s,” Mueller said in a post accompanying the video.

“Let me make this abundantly clear once and for all – THE SWASTIKA IS A HATE SYMBOL AND YOU DO NOT FLY THE FLAG, YOU DO NOT WEAR THE SYMBOL ANYWHERE ON YOUR BODY, YOU DO NOT USE OR DEFEND THIS SYMBOL, EVER. END OF STORY.”

The white St. Louis couple that aimed weapons at Black Lives Matter protesters in front of their home last month was charged with felony counts of unlawful use of a weapon. The charge was announced Monday by Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner weeks after a viral video showed Mark and Patricia McCloskey, both in their 60s, come out of their home pointing weapons, including a semi-automatic rifle, at protesters in the street nearby. At the time, several hundred protesters were making their way to the home of the city’s Democratic mayor nearby to protest. As they passed, Mark McCloskey emerged wearing khakis and a tucked in pink polo shirt while swinging around the semi-automatic rifle. Patricia McCloskey looked wild-eyed as she unevenly pointed a pistol in the direction of the protesters. The couple’s wild conduct during the stand-off with peaceful protesters who were largely black was ludicrous verging on parody. It was also clearly dangerous and, according to the district prosecutor, against the law.

“It is illegal to wave weapons in a threatening manner at those participating in nonviolent protest, and while we are fortunate this situation did not escalate into deadly force, this type of conduct is unacceptable in St. Louis,” Gardner said in a statement. The couple, both of whom are personal injury attorneys, said they were scared for their safety, as one does to lay the groundwork to try to get away with violent conduct, particularly against people of color. The Class E felony charge carries with it a potential four-year prison sentence, though Gardner is pushing for a diversion program that would result in community service.

A daily email update of the stories you need to read right now.

The charges have prompted the usual apoplectic response from the gun-toting right. Moments after the charges were filed, the state attorney general filed a brief calling for the charges to be dismissed. The basis for the dismissal is Missouri’s Castle Doctrine, which allows residents wide legal leeway in “protecting” their home. It is a measure that has been pushed by the NRA at the state legislature level across the country and has had the effect of legalizing white violence under the auspices of an expansive definition of self-defense to include one’s property. On cue, the Republican establishment—from President Donald Trump down to Missouri Gov. Mike Parson and Sen. Josh Hawley—has called for a civil rights investigation into the prosecutor for having the audacity to investigate, and ultimately prosecute, the matter.

A lawyer for the couple said the McCloskeys “support the First Amendment right of every citizen to have their voice and opinion heard. This right, however, must be balanced with the Second Amendment and Missouri law, which entitle each of us to protect our home and family from potential threats.” Potential threats, not actual ones. Not that distinction will actually matter, as the state’s Republican governor has suggested he will pardon the couple, short-circuiting the legal system before it has even warmed up.

The St. Louis couple who drew national attention for brandishing guns at protesters in late June was charged on Monday, according to CBS affiliate KMOV-TV. Patricia and Mark McCloskey each face one charge of “unlawful use of a weapon — flourishing,” sources told the outlet.

“It is illegal to wave weapons in a threatening matter at those participating in nonviolent protest, and while we are fortunate this situation did not escalate into deadly force, this type of conduct is unacceptable in St. Louis,” said Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner. “We must protect the right to peacefully protest, and any attempt to chill it through intimidation will not be tolerated.”

Police executed a search warrant last week and seized Mark McCloskey’s gun. The couple’s former attorney later turned over Patricia McCloskey’s gun.

The confrontation took place on June 28, when several hundred protesters were headed to the home of St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson. Photos and video show the couple with guns drawn as the protesters passed their home, which is located on a private street.

Mark McCloskey told KMOV-TV that he and his wife were scared for their lives

“It was like the storming of the Bastille, the gate came down and a large crowd of angry, aggressive people poured through,” he said. “I was terrified that we’d be murdered within seconds. Our house would be burned down, our pets would be killed.”

Video on social media appears to show the protesters opening and walking through the unbroken gate, KMOV reported. It’s not clear when or how the gate was damaged.

McCloskey also claimed that he and his wife received death threats from the group — although one of the protest’s leaders said the group was peaceful and no threats were made.

During a Monday appearance on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Mark McCloskey called it an “upside-down world.”

“The prosecutor, the circuit attorney, has decided that her job isn’t to keep us safe from criminals, but to keep the criminals safe from us,” he said.

An attorney for the couple called Monday’s charges “disheartening.”

“I, along with my clients, support the First Amendment right of every citizen to have their voice and opinion heard,” said attorney Joel Schwartz, according to KMOV-TV. “This right, however, must be balanced with the Second Amendment and Missouri law, which entitle each of us to protect our home and family from potential threats.”

The couple has received support from local politicians including Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, who urged Attorney General William Barr to launch a federal civil rights investigation of Gardner before the charges were announced, according to KMOV-TV. He accused the attorney of making “a politically motivated attempt to punish this family for exercising their Second Amendment rights.”

After the charges were announced, Hawley urged the court to dismiss the case on Twitter. “The court should dismiss this case, which is plainly contrary to Missouri law and the US Constitution, and sanction the Circuit Attorney’s Office,” he wrote.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson said last week that he may pardon the couple. Based on what he knew about the case, “I don’t think they’re going to spend any time in jail,” he said on the Marc Cox Morning Show, according to KMOV-TV.

President Trump has also weighed in. In an interview with Townhall Media, the president said the couple “were going to be beat up badly, if they were lucky.” The couple also appeared at a virtual Trump campaign event on Friday night.

“It is illegal to wave weapons in a threatening manner — that is unlawful in the city of St. Louis,” Gardner said.

Gardner is recommending a diversion program such as community service rather than jail time if the McCloskeys are convicted. Typically, class E felonies could result in up to four years in prison.

Supporters of the McCloskeys said they were legally defending their $1.15 million home. Photos emerged as memes on both sides of the gun debate.

Several Republican leaders have condemned Gardner’s investigation, including President Donald Trump, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson and Sen. Josh Hawley, who has urged Attorney General William Barr to undertake a civil rights investigation of Gardner. Parson said in a radio interview Friday that he would likely pardon the couple if they were charged and convicted.

Gardner said Trump, Parson and others are attacking her to distract from “their failed approach to the COVID-19 pandemic” and other issues.

St. Louis, like many cities across the country, has seen demonstrations in the weeks since George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, and the McCloskeys’ home was initially incidental to the demonstration on June 28. Several hundred people were marching to the home of Democratic Mayor Lyda Krewson, a few blocks from the McCloskeys’ home. Krewson had angered activists by reading on Facebook Live the names and addresses of some who had called for defunding police.

The McCloskeys live on a private street called Portland Place. A police report said the couple heard a loud commotion and saw a large group of people break an iron gate marked with “No Trespassing” and “Private Street” signs. A protest leader, the Rev. Darryl Gray, said the gate was open and that protesters didn’t damage it.

Video posted online showed Mark McCloskey wielding a long-barreled gun and Patricia McCloskey waving a small handgun. No shots were fired.

Trump spoke by phone with Parson last week to criticize Gardner’s investigation. Parson, when he was in the Legislature, co-authored Missouri’s “castle doctrine” law that justifies deadly force for those who are defending their homes from intruders. He has said that the McCloskeys “had every right to protect their property.”

Gardner declined to discuss why she decided the castle doctrine didn’t apply.

The McCloskeys’ attorney, Albert Watkins, said they are longtime civil rights advocates and support the message of the Black Lives Matter movement. He said they grabbed their guns when two or three white protesters violently threatened the couple, their property and that of their neighbors.

Gardner, St. Louis’ first Black circuit attorney, has been at odds with some in the St. Louis establishment since her election in 2016. Most notably, her office charged then-Gov. Eric Greitens with felony invasion of privacy in 2018 for allegedly taking a compromising photo of a woman during an extramarital affair. The charge was eventually dropped, but Greitens resigned in June 2018.

A private investigator Gardner hired to investigate the claims against Greitens was later indicted for perjury for allegedly lying during a deposition. His case is pending.

Gardner also has butted heads with police leaders, especially after she developed an “exclusion list” of more than two dozen officers who were barred from serving as primary witnesses in criminal cases over what Gardner called credibility concerns. The move angered Police Chief John Hayden, who also is Black.

In January, Gardner filed a federal lawsuit accusing the city, the police union and others of a coordinated and racist conspiracy aimed at forcing her out of office. The lawsuit also accused “entrenched interests” of intentionally impeding her efforts to change racist practices.

Several Black leaders in St. Louis have expressed support for Gardner, including U.S. Rep. William Lacy Clay, a Democrat, who has said protesters “should never be subject to the threat of deadly force, whether by individuals or by the police.”

on Saturday, Elizabeth Lynne Scott of Heart and County got tested for Cove in 19 because she was planning to go visit her parents in Michigan. My grand parents wanted to see me, too. So just to make sure that, you know, if I test negative, that they would be OK, that everything will be fine after testing positive but without showing any symptoms, Elizabeth says the Health Department contacted her, requesting she signed documents. Pretty much it was that I agree to consent Teoh. I agreed to comply to call Health Department if I was to go. I was to call the health department prior to leave in my house for any reason. Elizabeth chose not to sign. I had gotten a message from them, a text lunches that stated, because if you were refusal to sign, this is going to be escalated long. First be involved. On Thursday, the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department greeted Elizabeth’s husband, Isaiah, at their front door. Open up the door. There’s like a different people, five different cars. I’m like, What the heck’s going on? This guy’s in a suit with the mask. It’s the health department guy and they have three papers for us, for me, Her and my daughter. The couple was ordered to wear ankle monitors. If they travel more than 200 feet, law enforcement will be notified. We didn’t rob a bank. We didn’t rob a store. We didn’t steal something. Leave it in. You know anything wrong? The couple says. They never denied self quarantining. They just didn’t agree with the wording of the documents. And that’s exactly why the director of the public health department had told the judge that I was refusing to self quarantine because of this. And I’m like, That’s not the case at all. I never said that.

HARDIN COUNTY, Ky. (Video from WAVE via CNN) —

A Kentucky couple has been forced to wear ankle monitors after a woman who tested positive for COVID-19 refused to sign health department documents that would limit her travel without permission.

Elizabeth Linscott got tested for COVID-19 as a precaution before going to visit family in Michigan last Saturday, WAVE-TV reported. She tested positive, but does not have any symptoms.

The Hardin County Health Department sent her documents that needed her signature limiting her from traveling anywhere unless she called them first.

She said she refused to sign the documents because of how they were worded, not because she refused to quarantine.

“My part was if I have to go to the ER, if I have to go to the hospital, I’m not going to wait to get the approval to go,” Linscott told the TV station.

Days later, authorities arrived to their home and placed ankle monitors on her and her husband. They go off if either goes more than 200 feet from their home.
