A California pastor defied an emergency temporary restraining order issued Friday in which he was told to refrain from holding additional indoor worship, CBS Los Angeles reports. Pastor Rob McCoy of Godspeak Calvary Chapel in Newbury Park held indoor services Sunday in defiance of the Friday’s order and other health orders that aim to slow and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

On Friday, Ventura County Superior Court Judge Matthew Guasco granted the restraining order, which requires Godspeak to close its indoor services and move its congregation outside and requires congregants to wear masks and socially distance.

Ventura County moved to get the temporary restraining order because McCoy said he would not stop holding services indoors, as he feels worship is essential.

McCoy first reopened his church on Palm Sunday with social distancing, allowing members to take communion with long, visible lines.

In late June, the church opened for indoor services, as did others across the state, but Godspeak refused to stop indoor services even after Governor Newsom issued a ban on large gatherings last month.

McCoy posted an update Saturday, indicating that the church would be open, but warned those who wanted to attend that they may be cited. According to McCoy, the restraining order stipulates the first 1,000 people to arrive for services could receive citations.

Police were on scene as services were held inside. Roughly 100-150 people gathered to both protest and support the pastor’s decision, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. No arrests were made outside and it is unclear if McCoy or any congregants were cited at this time.

A court hearing regarding the restraining order is scheduled for August 31.

Grenon runs a fake church with his sons in Florida that sells people a life-threatening toxic bleach product he calls the Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS), federal officials say, which he fraudulently claims cures everything from covid-19 to cancer.

“Trump has got the MMS and all the info!!! Things are happening folks!” Grenon, 62, wrote on Facebook on April 24, linking to Trump’s comments. “Lord help others to see the Truth!”

Grenon had made $500,000 in 2019 alone selling his solutions to thousands of vulnerable, sick people across the country, according to the Justice Department, even though the Food and Drug Administration had warned for years that people could die if they drank MMS products, which are essentially bleach.

Now, the feds say people have in fact been hospitalized and died from drinking MMS.

On Wednesday, Grenon and his three sons — Jonathan, Joseph and Jordan — were charged in the Southern District of Florida with conspiracy to defraud the United States and deliver misbranded drugs. The criminal charges come on the heels of civil action the FDA took against the Grenons and their “Genesis II Church of Health and Healing” in April, when a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking them from selling MMS. Because they allegedly continued to promote and sell it anyway, the four men are also charged with criminal contempt.

The U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of Florida didn’t offer details about the reported deaths linked to the products, saying the FDA has “received reports of people requiring hospitalizations, developing life-threatening conditions, and dying after drinking MMS.”

“Not only is this MMS product toxic, but its distribution and use may prevent those who are sick from receiving the legitimate healthcare they need,” U.S. Attorney Ariana Fajardo Orshan said in a statement. “A United States District Court already has ordered the defendants to stop distributing this product; we will not sit idly by as individuals purposefully violate Court orders and put the public in danger.”

The Grenons could not immediately be reached for comment late Wednesday night.

The case is part of the DOJ and FDA’s crackdown on coronavirus-related scams profiting off fears during the pandemic by promising fraudulent cure-alls or immunity when there is in fact no cure or vaccine.

According to the criminal complaint, Mark Grenon founded the company as a church in 2010 “for the express purpose of cloaking their unlawful conduct” by framing all of their activities as protected religious freedoms.

In one interview in February, according to the complaint, Grenon explained that he told his followers in a seminar in 2010, “ ‘Listen, we’re going to start a church.’ … And man, they flipped out. Everybody hated the idea. And we said, you’ve got to do this, folks, or you’re going to go to jail.”

The family business, which has set up chapters across the globe, pulled in around $32,000 in profit each month last year, selling travel-size bottles of MMS for a required “donation” of $40 and large bulk packages of the fake miracle cure for a “donation” of $900.

Profits soared in March, when Genesis started falsely claiming that MMS could cure covid-19, too. They raked in roughly $123,000 that month, a nearly 400 percent increase in revenue, according to the feds.

“The Coronavirus is curable! Do you believe it? You better!” one Genesis newsletter said, with dosing instructions for “wiping out” the virus, according to the complaint.

A judge issued a temporary restraining order on April 17, leading Grenon to claim during a broadcast days later that he had mailed a letter to Trump about Genesis and MMS, asking him to “intervene” in his case.

On April 23, when Trump wondered about injecting disinfectant during a coronavirus daily briefing, Grenon suggested that the president knew about MMS, as the Guardian reported, although it’s not clear that Trump ever read or received any letter from Grenon.

“I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute, one minute,” Trump said during a coronavirus press briefing. “And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside, or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets inside the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.”

Trump claimed the next day that the remarks were sarcastic. But Grenon was already mobilizing his followers.

On Facebook after the briefing, Grenon urged people to contact the White House.

“Everyone write the President with your testimonies,” he wrote. “They speak the loudest! The fake news hates the Truth!”

Around the same time, according to the complaint, Grenon and his sons wrote a threatening letter to U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams, who issued the temporary restraining order. He said that his church would resist her order as an act of “civil disobedience” but that “the 2nd Amendment is there in case it can’t be done peaceably.” In a later podcast, Grenon warned Williams that she could be “taken out.”

The Grenon family is representing themselves in the civil case.

“The Genesis II Church of Health and Healing has actively and deliberately placed consumers at risk with their fraudulent Miracle Mineral Solution,” Catherine Hermsen, assistant commissioner of the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations, said in a statement. “The FDA will continue our efforts to make sure these and other like-minded sellers do not jeopardize the health of Americans during this pandemic and in the future.”

A Florida teenager who died of the coronavirus attended a party at a church with 100 others just two weeks before her death, a report said Monday.

Carsyn Leigh Davis, 17, of Fort Myers, was at the church function last month where “She did not wear a mask [and] social distancing was not followed,” according to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office report on her death.

The medical examiner’s report, obtained by the Fort Myers News-Press, details how the girl’s family treated her at home, with unproven drugs, for nearly a week before taking her to the hospital.

She had struggled with a number of health issues over the years, including a rare nervous-system disorder that resolved when she was five, obesity and an auto-immune disorder, the report states.

Her mother, Carole Brunton Davis, also stated in a Facebook post that her daughter was a cancer survivor, the News-Press previously reported.

A Florida teenager who died of the coronavirus attended a party at a church with 100 others just two weeks prior to her death,

The medical examiner found that the girl’s nurse mom and her father, a physician assistant, gave her azithromycin — an antibiotic being studied as a potential COVID-19 treatment — as a protective measure against the virus, the News-Press reported.

On June 13, a couple of days after the church event, the girl developed a headache, sinus pressure, and mild cough, which the family assumed was the result of a sinus infection, the report states.

Then on June 19, the teen’s mom noticed that she “looked gray” while sleeping —  and gave her an unspecified dose of hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug hailed by some, including President Trump, as a possible treatment for COVID-19.

Earlier this month, the agency yanked its emergency use authorization for the drug as a treatment for the virus in hospitals, citing a lack of evidence it worked and that the risks outweighed any potential benefits.

The parents then tried putting the teen on an oxygen tank used by her grandfather, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

They then finally took her to Gulf Coast Medical Center in south Fort Myers. The teen was transferred to The Golisano Children’s Hospital, which confirmed that she had COVID-19.

At the hospital, her parents opted for her to receive a plasma treatment, refusing to allow her to be intubated. That didn’t work, and the girl was later intubated anyway, according to the report.

Trump’s Arizona Rally Site
Church Claims New Tech Kills COVID
… Most of It, Anyway

6/22/2020 7:02 AM PT

The church where President Trump will host his latest rally since the pandemic has made some bold claims about its facility and coronavirus, and it sounds too good to be true.

Dream City Church

Faith leaders for Arizona’s Dream City Church — which has 7 locations, including a Phoenix and Scottsdale location — hopped online with a promo video hyping up this new technology they say they got their hands on … which can, allegedly, wipe out nearly 100% of COVID-19 molecules in the air.

DCC’s CFO Brendon Zastrow and Pastor Luke Barnett stood shoulder-to-shoulder in this bizarre clip, claiming Clean Air Exp — an air purification org — has a way to scientifically zap away 99.9% of the virus that might be floating around while people breathe.

They chalk it up to ionization, which they (and Clean Air EXP) say cluster pollutants in the air and attacks them … which these fellas claim make it impossible for COVID-19 to live.

Zastrow and Barnett say this air purification system is up and running in their megachurches, and assure us it’s safe for people to swing by and worship. The timing is anything short of suspicious — DT’s heading to their Phoenix site Tuesday for another rally.

The CDC hasn’t weighed in on the efficacy of Clean Air EXP’s method — it certainly hasn’t approved it as effective — but the company itself is pumping up the claim.

A church in rural northeastern Oregon is now the epicenter of the state’s largest coronavirus outbreak, as 236 people tested positive for the disease, authorities said Tuesday.

The outbreak also led to Oregon’s second consecutive record-setting daily coronavirus case count.

“I think generally we are seeing increasing numbers, which is what we expected with reopening,” said Thomas Jeanne, the deputy state health officer and deputy state epidemiologist.

In response to the increasing caseload, Gov. Kate Brown last week said she was putting all county applications for further reopening from her COVID-19 restrictions on hold for seven days.

The Oregon Health Authority reported 278 new statewide cases Tuesday — a 51% increase from Monday’s case count. Officials attributed the rise in cases largely to increased testing, contact tracing, workplace outbreaks and “potential spread in the community.”

The largest outbreak, which was first made public Monday, is associated with Lighthouse Pentecostal Church in Union County.

The Observer newspaper of La Grande reported that the church held services in April and May, even though Oregon COVID-19 restrictions limited gatherings. Also, the Observer reported that the facility recently held a wedding and a graduation ceremony, each with more than 100 people.

Attempts to reach representatives of the church were not successful Tuesday.

The health authority and county officials teamed up with the church over the weekend to hold a clinic where 356 people were tested for the virus — 66% tested positive for the new coronavirus, officials reported.

Currently, five people associated with the outbreak are hospitalized, Jeanne said. The county does not have any confirmed fatalities from coronavirus.

Prior to the outbreak, the county had fewer than 25 cases during the pandemic.

“We have tested the majority of the congregation at the church in Union County,” Jeanne said. “At this point we hope there will not be a lot more [cases)] but that is what contact tracing, quarantine and follow up will be important for.”

Over the last 14 days, 35% of cases have not been linked to a specific transmission, Jeanne said.

“We are concerned about these trends, particularly the sporadic cases that can’t be traced to a specific outbreak or cluster, because they indicate how much community spread is occurring — the type of spread that we are less able to control through testing, case investigation, contact tracing, isolation and quarantine,” Jeanne said.

Tuesday’s case count brings the new total number of people who have tested positive for coronavirus in Oregon to 6,098. In addition, two more people have died from the disease, raising the state’s death toll to 182.

For most, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

Rev. Robert Fisher, the rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington D.C. — located in Lafayette Square near the White House — told “The Story” Monday that whoever set fire to the basement of the church’s parish hall Sunday night does not represent the majority of people who have protested following the death of George Floyd.

Fisher joined host Martha MacCallum moments after President Trump walked through Lafayette Park to the boarded-up church, where he posed for photographs while holding a Bible in the air.

“This is such an interesting moment to me when,” Fisher said. “We agreed to have this talk, I had no idea what was going to be going on at 7:00 tonight. I actually haven’t seen any of it. I’ve been listening to it all, of course, and honestly, it feels, like so many ways, a surreal moment for me. I feel like I’m in some alternative universe in some way.”

ST. JOHN’S RECTOR SAYS DAMAGE COULD HAVE BEEN ‘A LOT WORSE’

Fisher recalled parishoners calling him with news of the fire Sunday evening. He told MacCallum that he and his wife visited the church early Monday and were thankful the only room burned was a newly-renovated part of the nursery.

“It was just one room that had been recently renovated and it was not one of the irreplaceable historic parts of the space. I was so grateful for that,” he said.

“And I’m very mindful that those people who did this — it may have been one person, I don’t know who it was — I think it is really important to say that person does not represent the majority of the people that are out there peacefully protesting with an important message.”

In closing, Fisher thanked the public for their outpouring of support, and added that America must continue to look past the violence and concentrate on the “message of fighting racism as a country.”

“That is the only way that we are going to have healing and progress.”

A church in Mississippi burned down this week and the incident is now being investigated as arson, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to CBS News First Pentecostal Church in Holly Springs had previously defied stay-at-home orders to open for services, and the church even sued the city of Holly Springs for trying to shut down a Bible study gathering.

Investigators said they found graffiti on the church property reading: “Bet you stay home now you hypokrites.”

“I am heartbroken and furious,” Governor Tate Reeves tweeted on Thursday, sharing a photo of the now-destroyed First Pentecostal Church. In Mississippi, a church was just burned to the ground. They had been trying to open services.”

“What is this pandemic doing to us? We need prayer for this country,” his tweet continued.

In April, First Pentecostal Church sued the city, claiming that Holly Springs police officers disrupted a “peaceful mid-week Bible Study and shut it down on threat of criminal citations for violation of Holly Springs’ Stay Home Order, despite the fact that Plaintiffs were practicing social distancing and complying with all applicable health requirements,” according to the lawsuit.

The church also claims that police officers interrupted a worship service on Easter Sunday and issued a citation to Pastor Jerry Waldrop for violating the stay-at-home order. “Plaintiffs seek immediate and long-term relief from this unconstitutional order,” the suit continues.

In his response to the suit, Judge Michael P. Mills said he’s concerned the church has been “proceeding in an excessively reckless and cavalier manner and with insufficient respect for the enormity of the health crisis which the Covid-19 pandemic presents.”

Mills also said the church’s members staged “a mass visit to Walmart weeks ago,” which was captured on video, “merely to make a point in their dispute with the City.”

“This court considers the visit depicted in the video to have been highly reckless in light of the ongoing pandemic, and it frankly suspects that plaintiff’s members regard this controversy as a game of sorts and enjoy the publicity attendant to it,” Mills writes.

Holly Springs is now allowing drive-in church services.

A number of churches around the country have pushed back against stay-at-home orders that impose limits on public gatherings, including religious services. The restrictions are meant to keep people safe and reduce the spread of the coronavirus, but some church leaders contend they violate religious freedom.

The Associated Press reports Mississippi’s safer-at-home order, which is set to expire Monday, allows churches to operate as essential businesses but limits the size of indoor gatherings. Governor Reeves issued “Safe Worship” guidelines this week with steps congregations can take to more safely restart services inside their buildings.

A North Mississippi church that filed a lawsuit about a month ago questioning the city’s restrictions on gatherings burned to the ground with a disturbing, misspelled message scribbled just before its steps: “Bet you stay home now you hypokrites.”

First Pentecostal Church in Holly Springs, which sits at the border with southern Tennessee, collapsed into smoldering ashes and rubble early Wednesday after an explosion ignited the sanctuary, Fox 13 Memphis reported.

Marshall County Sheriff Department criminal investigator Kelly McMillen told the outlet that authorities believe the fire was an arson based on evidence located around the scene and a nearby hill.

A large blast from the back of the building blew out the front, according to the news station. Spray paint cans were found near the church.

Pastor Jerry Waldrop told the station that it was hard for him to wrap his head around knowing someone might have deliberately destroyed the church.

“We have really wracked our brains,” he said. “We have no idea, no enemies.”

Church members embraced and consoled one another as authorities searched what was left of their place of worship for clues, Fox 13 Memphis reported.

The loss of the church has drawn rebuke from nearby residents and the state’s governor, WATN Local 24 reported.

Gov. Tate Reeves (R) tweeted Thursday that he was “heartbroken and furious” over the church’s burning.

“What is this pandemic doing to us,” he tweeted with a picture of the destroyed church. “We need prayer for this country.”

Just weeks after the house of worship held indoor gatherings with dozens of people — and then sued to keep authorities out — it now finds itself enveloped in a mystery that has baffled residents of Holly Springs, a town of 7,600.

Police say they dispersed several events last month that violated city orders banning large indoor gatherings. On April 10, the church received a citation for services with almost 40 congregants sitting inside.

Church members also protested the city’s restriction on in-person services in April, according to WATN Local 24.

Then the church sued, claiming state law was on its side. Mississippi’s “safer-at-home” order never prohibited religious services, and Reeves permitted houses of worship to welcome large groups if social distancing was in place.

Besides, the lawsuit said, services had been a drive-through event — which are now legal in Holly Springs — and only moved indoors because of bad weather.

Stephen Crampton, the church’s attorney, told WMC the fire and graffiti were “very clearly directed at this particular lawsuit and the church’s stand for its own constitutional rights.”

Crampton told WATN Local 24 in a statement that the church hopes the perpetrators of the crime are brought to justice.

“Our most sincere prayers are with the people of this church and their pastor,” he said. “They have been grieving the inability to gather as a congregation since the covid-19 pandemic stay-home orders forced the closure of their church home and now they must grieve the loss of this spiritual home, their place of worship.”

Waldrop told Fox 13 Memphis the building was a total loss but its devastation would not hinder worship services.

“We are going to keep the faith, and we’re going to keep doing what we have always done, and maybe not on this location,” he said. “I’ll get with our faithful people, and maybe we’ll rent a building or whatever we need to do for the time being.”
