A nonpartisan Christian organisation that seeks to end hunger says it has asked for and received the resignation of Republican congressman Ted Yoho from its board of directors, following what it called his “verbal attack” on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Democrat congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez had accused Yoho of using a vulgar and sexist insult while upbraiding her during a confrontation last Monday on the steps of the Capitol. Yoho maintained he did not use the words cited, though a reporter who witnessed the incident confirmed the language as she described it.
In a statement on Saturday, Bread for the World said its board met Friday with Yoho and sought his resignation “as an action that reaffirms our commitment to coming alongside women and people of colour, nationally and globally, as they continue to lead us to a more racially inclusive and equitable world”.
On its website, Bread for the World says its “collective Christian voice” lobbies Congress and the administration on ending hunger nationally and worldwide.
“As a bipartisan Christian organization committed to alleviating hunger and poverty through sound public policies, Bread for the World upholds the values of respect, dignity, and compassion that Jesus calls us to when engaging decision makers from across the political spectrum,” the statement said.
“We believe that Rep. Ted Yoho’s recent actions and words as reported in the media are not reflective of the ethical standards expected of members of our Board of Directors.”
A spokesman for Yoho did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
In an extraordinary speech in the House on Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez offered a dramatic account of the incident and broadened her remarks to assail what she called a sexist culture of “accepting violence and violent language against women”. More than a dozen colleagues joined her in casting the incident as all-too-common male behaviour.
Yoho has described the encounter as a brief policy discussion and said that “no one was accosted, bullied, or attacked”. He expressed regret for his “abrupt manner”.
Ocasio-Cortez, 30, is a freshman progressive who has gained praise and criticism for her outspokenness. Yoho, 65, one of the most conservative members of the House, is retiring at the end of his fourth term.

The Missouri Christian summer camp Kanakuk, which is now in its 94th year of operation, likes to declare every year its “Best Summer Ever.” This year, that title will be tough to claim. Camp sessions opened on May 30 with an impressive roster of new safety measures in place, including new low-contact drop-off procedures, new air filtration systems, daily temperature checks, quarantine protocols, and more. But on June 26, the camp notified parents by email that there were two positive COVID-19 cases at K-2, one of its six camp locations. Over the next few days, the number of diagnoses climbed to 82. K-2 shut down, and parents from 10 states scrambled to pick up their children early.
About 6.5 million young people will participate in overnight or day camps this summer, the American Camp Association has estimated. That’s down from 26 million in a typical summer. Some states, including New York and Oregon, canceled all sleep-away camps unilaterally. But many others have allowed camps, families, and local health departments to decide for themselves how to proceed. The CDC’s COVID guidelines for summer camps, issued in May, lists campers coming from outside the local geographic area as a “highest risk” factor.
Kanakuk reassured parents in part by touting the state’s approval for its summer plans. “The Missouri Governor Mike Parson has given our opening his blessing, and said he was ‘totally impressed’ with our COVID-19 Kamper Care Plan,” the camp emailed parents on May 5. (The governor’s office did not respond to a request to confirm the camp’s account.) In a video posted to the camp’s website at the same time, Joe White, who has owned the camp since 1976, said he was confident in the camp’s precautions. “As a 71-year-old man with compromised health issues, as well as a grandfather of 15 grandkids of my own,” he said, “I feel deeply the concerns that both the knowns and unknowns bring to a youth care ministry such as Kanakuk.”
Some parents say the camp has been incommunicative with them as the outbreak spread. “There was 0 communication or efforts made from Kanakuk to contact us regarding the closure. Nothing!” one Texas parent, Mia Chase, wrote to the camp’s president and health services, according to NBC News. Chase told NBC that campers were assembled in a single large group to receive the news about the diagnoses, furthering their exposure. She said kids gathered again that same night for a “mosh-pit-style” dance party, where not everyone wore their masks or the Kanakuk-branded “face buffs” they received on arrival at camp. The camp has made few public statements about the outbreak, and its communications office did not respond to multiple interview requests. Last summer, the camp’s Twitter account tweeted every day in June. This year, the camp’s main Twitter account did not tweet between June 1 and July 1, and the account for K-2 has not tweeted since June 1. When a rumor spread last week that a positive case had been diagnosed at K-1, another camp location, a camp representative declined to answer questions and asked a local news reporter to leave the property.
“For us, the risk of COVID-19 versus the chance of the kids having more time with Jesus, it was hands down: the chance to have more ofJesus.”
— Laura Hobbs, who sent her three children to Kanakuk
Other parents say they understood the risks they were taking on by sending their children to camp and were pleased with how the camp attempted to control the virus. Ann Boles, who attended the camp herself as a child, told me that she agonized over whether to send her two teenagers for their seventh summer at Kanakuk this year. They were set to start camp on July 4 this year. The week before, she received a message from the camp notifying her of the initial positive cases at K-2. “I cried a lot of tears trying to decide,” she said. “This was not something we took on lightly at all.” Boles’ daughter has three close friends who attend camp with her every summer, and two of their parents decided not to send their daughters this year.
Ultimately, however, Boles trusted the camp. She was reassured by the precautions she heard about. Campers were asked to quarantine for two weeks before arriving at camp, and they had their temperature taken on arrival. They were expected to wear masks or buffs—a tube of stretchy fabric that can be worn around the neck or pulled up as a face covering—anytime they were indoors with people outside their cabin groups of eight to 10. The buffs were collected every night and washed. Another parent told me campers in bunk beds were instructed to sleep with their heads facing opposite directions, to create extra distance between their faces. “I haven’t heard any parents unhappy about how this was handled,” Boles said. “And I felt nothing but good about sending them.”
Laura Hobbs sent her three children to Kanakuk this summer in the camp’s first session, which started May 30. “I felt like so many things were being canceled for our kids, I wanted them to have something that felt like normal,” she said. Hobbs grew up going to Kanakuk, and worked there as a counselor for eight summers. Last summer, the church her husband leads in Texas hosted a “KampOut!” session—essentially a portable day camp that Kanakuk puts on in churches across the country. When Kanakuk canceled all KampOut sessions this summer, citing safety concerns, she decided to send her children to Kanakuk’s sleep-away camp for the first time: “For us, the risk of COVID-19 versus the chance of them having more time with Jesus, it was hands down: the chance to have more of Jesus.”
Kanakuk is one of the largest sleep-away camps in the country, serving 20,000 children in a typical summer. Its unofficial motto is “I Am Third”: God is first, the camp teaches, others come second, and the self comes last. Founded in the mid-1920s by a Dallas educator, Kanakuk has had a reputation outside Missouri from the start. According to one book on Missouri history, the camp’s enrollment was so high by the late 1920s that a train was hired to transport all the campers from Texas.
The camp is now a well-known brand among evangelical Christians, particularly in the South. In the 1990s, White—the camp owner—became a fixture on Christian radio and a nationally known speaker at major Christian conferences like Promise Keepers, sometimes building and hoisting a large wooden cross on stage. Kanakuk invited Christian music artists like Michael W. Smith and Lecrae to compose music for the camp, and boasts that at least four Heisman trophy winners, including Johnny Manziel, have attended over the years. “The continual promise that Kanakuk has made to these American evangelical parents is you’re sending your child here for them to be safe and protected,” said Hunter Hampton, a historian at Stephen F. Austin State University who has written about Kanakuk’s role in evangelical culture. “When you’re in that world, the loyalty to Kanakuk is very, very deep.”
But some parents who have trusted their children to Kanakuk in the past viewed the camp’s best intentions warily. “I think everything they’re trying to do is awesome. It’s just impossible as a sleep-away camp to make it safe,” said Jason Newland, a Missouri pediatric infectious disease specialist who has sent his three children to Kanakuk multiple times over the past decade. This year, he said, it was an easy decision to keep them home. “To me, once they have 82 cases in K-2, you’re just asking for the same thing happening in the other campuses,” he said. “Why don’t we just be safe and stop everything?” Instead, the camp’s other locations will apparently remain open for the rest of the summer.

A summer camp run by a Christian group in Missouri has shut down after more than 80 children and staffers tested positive for the coronavirus, health officials said.
Organizers of the Kanakuk K-2 camp in Lampe in the state’s southwest near the Arkansas border made the decision to shut down last week due to a number of suspected cases, according to the Stone County Health Department.
On July 2, health officials said at least 41 campers and staff had tested positive. By Monday, that number had doubled to 82.
Health officials said the children were returning to their homes in 10 different states, as well as multiple Missouri counties.
“The decision to close has resulted in all campers, counselors and staff to return to their homes,” they said on Facebook. “SCHD will be working closely with Kanakuk Kamps to identify exposed individuals and quarantine those individuals, as necessary.”
Per the camp’s website, the shuttered camp had welcomed teens ages 13–18 for up to four weeks of “over-the-top fun and activities, deep friendships, biblical discipleship, and focused sports training.”
According to NBC News, which earlier reported the cluster, parents were notified of the camp closure via email last week. “As your Kamper returns home,” Kanakuk health services director Rebecca Duncan reportedly wrote to parents, “we recommend that you consider a 14-day self-quarantine for your child and monitor for symptoms of COVID-19.”
Staff at Kanakuk, which operates at least seven different camps, did not respond to requests for comment from BuzzFeed News. The camp has also made no mention of the outbreak on their social media channels, instead continuing to share images of happy campers enjoying outdoor activities.
Across the US, summer camps have been taking differing actions in response to the coronavirus pandemic, with some opting to close for the year, and others, like Kanakuk, hoping to remain open.
On their website, Kanakuk had sought to comfort parents looking to send their children off for some summer fun after months of being cooped up due to the coronavirus pandemic.
As part of more than 30 measures being taken to prevent an outbreak, staff were said to have installed “medical-grade air filtration systems” and hand sanitizers in each cabin, while requiring the campers to sleep head-to-foot.
Parents also had to complete a form asserting that their child had self-quarantined for 14 days prior to heading off for camp.

Former governor of Arkansas and ordained minister, Mike Huckabee, reacts to a Black Lives Matter activist’s call to take down all images of
Christian figures and symbols — including Jesus Christ himself — have become the target of hate and vandalism as protests continue across the nation.
What initially began as a campaign against Confederate figures after George Floyd‘s police-related death in May has expanded to activists forcibly tearing down or calling for the toppling of monuments to former U.S. presidents, saints, abolitionists, and other figures.
Earlier this week, Washington, D.C. protesters vandalized St. John’s Episcopal Church, located across from the White House where President Trump held up a Bible after it was burned by vandals. Demonstrators said it was a way of scoring restitution for slave owners who were Episcopalian, the Washington Examiner reports.
The president promised to sign an executive order by the end of the week to protect public statues and federal monuments, addressing the issue Wednesday.
“They’re looking at Jesus Christ, they’re looking at George Washington, they’re looking at Abraham Lincoln, they’re looking at Thomas Jefferson,” Trump said during a news conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda in the White House’s Rose Garden. “It’s not going to happen.”
Far-left activist Shaun King on Monday said all images depicting Jesus as a “white European” should be torn down because they are a form of “white supremacy” and “racist propaganda.”
In a series of tweets, King said all imagery, including “murals and stained glass windows of white Jesus, and his European mother, and their white friends,” should be taken down.
Critics argue that cultures other than white Europeans have depicted Jesus in ways that resemble the local community. For example, Ethiopia depicts Jesus as black dating back 1,500 years and images of Jesus appearing Asian can be found through the Far East.
Over the weekend, protesters in California tore down a statue of Junipero Serra, a Spanish priest whom Pope Francis recognized as a saint in 2015.
After the Serra statue was knocked down in San Francisco, Catholic Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone issued a statement defending the priest and calling it “mob rule, a troubling phenomenon that seems to be repeating itself throughout the country” and the Spanish Embassy also defended Serra asking that the “rich shared history be protected, always with the utmost respect for the debates currently taking place.”
Ahead of King’s tweets about taking down Jesus statues, American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp tweeted Sunday: “Jesus statues are next. It won’t end. Pray for the USA.”
Constitutional law attorney and senior legal advisor to the Trump 2020 campaign, Jenna Ellis, went “on record” Monday to say in a tweet: “If they try to cancel Christianity, if they try to force me to apologize or recant my Faith, I will not bend, I will not waver, I will not break.”
“On Christ the solid Rock I stand,” she added. “And I’m proud to be an American.”
Even if activists are successful in removing the image of Christ from parts of society, former governor of Arkansas and ordained minister Mike Huckabee ultimately believes this would only serve to strengthen Christians’ faith.
“You can take down the images and the art of depicting Jesus, but you can never take the true spirit of Jesus Christ out of the lives of his followers. And historically, under oppression and persecution, the true faith begins to show even more dramatically. It’s because in the midst of darkness, light becomes more obvious,” Huckabee said.
Fox News’ Teny Sahakian, Brian Flood, Bradford Betz, John Roberts, Andrew O’Reilly, and Brooke Singman contributed to this report.

Christian Cooper, the black man who filmed a white woman calling the cops on him in Central Park, said he feels “uncomfortable” with the amount of backlash she’s received, including losing her job. In the incident Monday, Cooper asked the woman, Amy Cooper, to leash her dog in an area of the New York City park that required it, but she refused.
While he filmed the encounter, the woman — known as “Central Park Karen” on social media — calls the police and falsely accuses him of threatening her life. Chris Cooper said later that he just wanted the video to speak for itself.
“I wasn’t gonna participate in my own dehumanization and feed that, so I just kept recording,” he said in an interview.
A New York City woman has lost her job after a video of her racially-charged confrontation with a black man went viral. The man was birdwatching in Central Park and recorded the encounter.
When police arrived, they determined that the two Coopers (who are not related) engaged in a verbal dispute and no one was arrested or given a summons, according to an NYPD spokesperson.
Chris Cooper is an avid bird watcher and was in the Ramble section of Central Park, an area where dogs must be leashed in part to protect wildlife. He said their encounter on Memorial Day was “one of those instances where this dog was tearing through those plantings.”
After the incident, Amy Cooper was fired from her job at an investment firm and she surrendered her cocker spaniel to the animal rescue where she’d adopted it. Chris Cooper was overwhelmed by the response to the video, which went viral on Twitter after his sister posted it. However, the retribution in particular was troubling for him.
“It’s a little bit of a frenzy, and I am uncomfortable with that,” he said in an interview with The New York Times. “If our goal is to change the underlying factors, I am not sure that this young woman having her life completely torn apart serves that goal.”
In an appearance on CNN, he said he considers the woman’s actions racist, but he urged people who were outraged by it to stay civil. He said death threats against her “should stop immediately.”
“I find it strange that people who were upset that … that she tried to bring death by cop down on my head, would then turn around and try to put death threats on her head. Where is the logic in that?” he said. “Where does that make any kind of sense?”
Christian Cooper, an avid bird-watcher, says he condemns “abhorrent” death threats targeting the woman, who called the police on him during an encounter involving her unleashed dog.

Members of a popular Christian band that’s been together for 20 years reacted to a shocking announcement from their lead singer, Jon Steingard, that he no longer believes in God.
Hawk Nelson told Fox News in a statement that “God is still for Jon and he still matters … that truth doesn’t change just because we question it.”
“One of our best friends, one with whom we have walked, worked and lived alongside for 20-plus years revealed some of his innermost feelings on his faith journey this past week,” Bandmates Daniel Biro, David Niacaris and Micah Kuiper said.

The Christian rock band frontman shared a lengthy note on Instagram: “I’ve been terrified to post this for a while — but it feels like it’s time for me to be honest.”
Steingard said: “After growing up in a Christian home, being a pastor’s kid, playing and singing in a Christian band, and having the word ‘Christian’ in front of most of the things in my life — I am now finding that I no longer believe in God.”
Formed in 2000, the band shifted from fast-paced punk rock to more contemporary Christian music with songs like those from their latest 2018 album, “Miracles,” after Steingard switched from guitarist to lead vocalist in 2012.
Citing questions about God, the Bible and his upbringing, Steingard explained that he can no longer lead songs like “Drops in the Ocean” in good conscience.
His bandmates reacted with love and support for Steingard, as did fellow Christian music artists online.
“We are called to love one another unconditionally, as God loves us,” the band said in its statement, also saying their mission “to inspire and encourage all people with the truth that God is for them and not against them” is now for “one of our own.”

The 36-year-old singer explained he is “open to the idea that God is there … I suspect if he is there, he is very different than what I was taught.”
Biro, Niacaris and Kuiper cited the New Testament verse Romans 8:38, which says in part: “I am convinced that nothing can separate us from God’s love … nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
They added: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

After Steingard switched from guitarist to lead vocalist in 2012, the band, formed in 2000 from Peterborough, Ontario, shifted from fast-paced punk rock to more contemporary Christian music with songs like “Drops in the Ocean,” which he said he can “no longer sing” in good conscience.
“This is not a post I ever thought that I would write, but now I feel like I really need to,” Steingard wrote, explaining the loss of faith didn’t happen overnight and it came with questions about God, the Bible, and his upbringing in a Christian home.
Steingard received an outpouring of support from fellow Christian singers.
“Love you bro. Always will,” said Jeremy Camp, on whom the Christian film “I Still Believe” is based.
Tenth Avenue North singer Mike Donehey wrote: “Man I love that you shared this. You know I’m always around to talk about our belief in God or lack thereof. Love you and always will.”
Former lead singer of Sanctus Real Matt Hammitt added, “To echo so many others here, I have nothing but love in my heart for your old friend.”
Last year, the author of the best-seller “I Kissed Dating Goodbye,” Joshua Harris, renounced his faith in a shocking post on Instagram, writing, “I am not a Christian.”
Steingard did add, “I’m open to the idea that God is there. I’d prefer if he was. I suspect if he is there, he is very different than what I was taught.”
