A massive fire has broken out at Beirut port on Thursday, a little more than a month since a huge blast devastated the port facilities and surrounding area.

The Washington Post’s Beirut Bureau Chief Liz Sly tweeted that the Lebanese army has told people to evacuate the vicinity around the duty-free zone, and video is circulating on social media showing workers fleeing the area.

BEIRUT RESCUERS FRANTICALLY DIG THROUGH RUBBLE AFTER POSSIBLE HEARTBEAT DETECTED MONTH AFTER BLAST

Local TV stations said the companies that have offices near the port have asked their employees to leave the area and Lebanese troops closed the major road that passes near the port referring traffic to other areas, according to the Associated Press.

Although it was not immediately clear what caused the fire at the facility, the state-run National News Agency reported that the fire was at a warehouse where tires are placed.

Middle East Eye correspondent Ragip Soylu wrote on Twitter that the Lebanese Army confirmed a fire had broken out in a tire warehouse and that extinguishing operations — including the use of army helicopters — have already begun.

Soylu said authorities assured the fire would not lead to an explosion.

AJ English online correspondent Timour Azhari tweeted that there had also been “a smaller fire a couple [of] days ago that civil defense said they put out.”

TIME’s Rebecca Collard tweeted an ominous video showing a sky filled with dark smoke.

“Some of these [buildings] still don’t have windows after the #BeirutBlast a month ago and now they are being engulfed by (likely poisonous) black smoke,” she wrote.

Police spokesman Col. Joseph Msalam told the Associated Press they have no information about what is happening at the port, adding that the facility is currently under control of the army.

When questioned about reports that the fire was caused by burning tires and oil, he said: “I don’t know. It could be containers. I really don’t know what is there.”

The Aug. 4 explosion killed more than 190 people, injured around 6,500, and damaged thousands of buildings in the Lebanese capital after nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrates detonated.

Last week, the military discovered more than 4 tons of ammonium nitrate near the port and said it was “dealing with the material.”

This is a developing story, please check back for updates.

President TrumpDonald John TrumpUPS, FedEx shut down calls to handle mail-in ballots, warn of ‘significant’ problems: report Controversial GOP Georgia candidate attempts to distance from QAnon Trump orders TikTok parent company to sell US assets within 90 days MORE on Saturday said he disagreed with an assessment from the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that the United States could face the “worst fall” from a public health perspective if Americans do not follow guidelines to ease the spread of the novel coronavirus.

“No,” Trump told reporters at a news conference at his Bedminster, N.J., golf club when asked whether he agreed with CDC Director Robert Redfield’s recent remarks.

“You can’t compare it to 1917, that was incredible,” Trump continued, referring to the Spanish Influenza pandemic, which infected an estimated 500 million people worldwide and is believed to have killed at least 50 million.

As of Saturday evening, the coronavirus had infected over 21 million globally since it emerged in China late last year, and killed over 768,000 worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The U.S. accounts for the most cases globally, with over 5.3 million.

Redfield in an interview Wednesday with WebMD said that if Americans do not follow public health guidance, the U.S. could face “the worst fall, from a public health perspective, we’ve ever had” given that a fall COVID-19 surge would coincide with flu season.

“We’re going to have COVID in the fall, and we’re going to have flu in the fall,” Redfield said. “And either one of those by themselves can stress certain hospital systems.”

In disagreeing with Redfield, Trump noted Saturday that cases and hospitalizations in the state of Florida have declined after surging during the month of July. He also said he believes many Americans are wearing masks to prevent the spread of the virus and practicing good hygiene.

“No, I don’t agree with that,” the president said. “If you look at these numbers, they are coming down substantially.”

Saturday’s remarks were not out of character for Trump, who has repeatedly broken with his top health experts when they have offered dire projections about the virus that cut against his own predictions.

Trump also continued to project optimism about the economic recovery throughout Saturday’s news conference, highlighting statistics at the top of the briefing showing a bounce in retail spending in July and a surge in automobile production. Trump also claimed that the economic recovery would be hampered if presumptive Democratic nominee Joe BidenJoe BidenOn The Money: Economists flabbergasted after Congress leaves with no deal | Markets rise as the economy struggles | Retail sales slow in July Congress exits with no deal, leaving economists flabbergasted Trump touts NYC police union endorsement: ‘Pro-cop all the way’ MORE were elected in November.

“If stupid people aren’t elected next year, we’re going to have one of the greatest years that we’ve ever had,” Trump said, appearing to swipe at Biden, who is currently leading him in national and swing state polls.

FCC guidelines normally prohibit profanity between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. on television when “there is a reasonable risk that children may be in the audience.” Because Fox News is a cable service, it is exempt from the profanity rule, but cable news stations’ internal policies routinely bar swear words. Two Fox News contributors were suspended for using profanity on air in 2015, CNN Money reported at the time.

CNN and MSNBC did not air the news briefing live.

Faulkner returned to airing the briefing once McEnany started taking questions from the press corps. At the end of the hour, Faulkner said the network had not been aware McEnany planned to show the video. Faulkner suggested she preferred to be given a heads up for violent and profane content.

“The White House press briefing is something that is important for us to carry for you, and so a heads up at this time with videos like that are in the middle of the day, sometimes it’s helpful,” Faulkner said in a somber tone.

Fox News and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

McEnany’s briefing largely focused on the ongoing unrest in Portland and cities across the country following the killing of George Floyd, a black man, by a white Minnesota police officer. President Donald Trump has decried cities for not taking a firmer approach to quelling the protests, saying he would send in federal officers to enforce order.

Officers from the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Marshals Services were deployed to Portland, detaining journalists and protesters exercising their right to assembly in arrests that some have criticized as based on specious probable cause. Activists have filed lawsuits to stop the arrests, and a federal judge has ordered federal officers to not use force on journalists covering the protests.

The overwhelming majority of protests have been peaceful demonstrations, often with families and elected officials joining in. But Trump has portrayed the protesters as violent anarchists, saying Thursday on Fox News that federal forces were necessary to protect federal property.

Trump said he would try to get federal forces in a host of cities. After weeks of tense back-and-forth with Trump, Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot agreed this week to have federal officers assist the city on violent crime investigation, though she has expressed concern about too much interference from Washington.

“We’ll go into all the cities, any of the cities,” Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Friday. “We will put in 50,000, 60,000 people that really know what they are doing. And they are strong, they’re tough, and we can solve these problems so fast.”

Kris Jenner broke her social media silence on Wednesday following Kanye West’s now-deleted insults on Twitter.

Over the last few days, West, 43, reportedly referred to Jenner, 64, as “Kris Jong-Un,” called her boyfriend Corey Gamble “Calmye,” said the matriarch is involved in “white supremacy” because she didn’t reply to his texts, and informed her that she couldn’t see his kids.

Rather than address her son-in-law’s comments, Jenner broke her social media silence to post a video on her Instagram Story of a box of beignets from the bakery Beignet Box.

Jenner’s return to social media comes on the same day her daughter Kim Kardashian addressed her husband’s recent tweetstorm.

“As many of you know, Kanye has bi-polar disorder. Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand,” Kardashian, 39, began in a lengthy statement.

The KKW mogul continued: “He is a brilliant but complicated person who on top of the pressures of being an artist and a black man, who experienced the painful loss of his mother, and has to deal with the pressure and isolation that is heightened by his bi-polar disorder.”

The “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star also addressed West’s offensive remarks towards her, her family and friends.

“Those who are close with Kanye know his heart and understand his words some times do not align with his intentions,” Kardashian said.

Kim Kardashian West has spoken out about her husband Kanye West’s bipolar disorder amid erratic behavior in the last few days stemming from his 2020 presidential bid.

The 43-year-old rapper appeared at a campaign rally in North Charleston, S.C., on Sunday, when he criticized Harriet Tubman and tearfully spoke about abortion. He followed that with a lengthy Twitter rant on Monday night, in which he touched on his marriage to Kardashian, his fears of getting “locked up” and teased an upcoming album named after his late mother.

Kardashian, who has never spoken publicly about her husband’s bipolar disorder, issued a lengthy statement on Instagram defending West.

“As many of you know, Kanye has bi-polar disorder. Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand,” Kardashian’s statement shared to Instagram begins.

She noted that she has avoided speaking about this subject publicly out of respect for her kids as well as her husband’s right to privacy.

“But today, I feel like I should comment on it because of the stigma and misconceptions about mental health,” she explained. “Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behavior know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor. People who are unaware or far removed from this experience can be judgemental and not understand that the individual themselves have to engage in the process of getting help no matter how hard family and friends try.”

Kim said she realizes that her husband’s words can carry particular weight and “cause strong opinions and emotions” due to his status as a public figure. However, she said she finds him to be a “brilliant and complicated” person that is simply struggling to deal with his mental illness at times.

“Living with bi-polar disorder does not diminish or invalidate his dreams and his creative ideas, no matter how big or unobtainable they may feel to some,” she wrote. “That is part of his genius and as we have all witnessed, many of his big dreams have come true.”

She continued by seemingly confirming that West’s recent behavior, including his presidential campaign rally and tweets, are part of an issue involving his mental health. She requested privacy and “compassion and empathy” from others.

“We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however we should also give it to the individuals who are living with it in times when they need it the most,” she concluded.

TAMPA, Fla. — Florida on Sunday reported the highest single-day total of new coronavirus cases by any state since the start of the pandemic, with more than 15,000 new infections, eclipsing the previous high of 12,274 recorded in New York on April 4 amid the worst of its outbreak.

The number reflects both increased testing and a surge in transmission of the virus that has strained hospitals, led to shortages in a key antiviral drug and amplified fears about the pace the state lifted restrictions on movement and commerce. And it is a new red mark on the nation’s floundering efforts to combat the virus.

“It has just been horrifically busy,” John Toney, a professor of infectious diseases at the University of South Florida, said of hospitals where patients were flooding in and doctors and nurses were growing overwhelmed and exhausted.

“It’s reminiscent of what everyone dealt with in New York,” Professor Toney said. “It’s certainly putting a strain on a lot of the systems, even though hospitals are trying to accommodate.”

The increase of 15,300 cases has come as Disney World has let tourists back onto its rides, the Republican National Convention is set to begin in Jacksonville in August, and Gov. Ron DeSantis has ordered that public schools reopen for five days a week when classes resume next month. “If you can do Home Depot, if you can do Walmart, if you can do these things,” the governor said, “we absolutely can do the schools.”

The surge in Florida reflects how the spread of the virus has escalated in much of the country, particularly in Southern states where governors following President Trump’s lead had pushed aggressively to ease restrictions and encourage businesses to reopen. Now some states are trying to add mask mandates and other protective measures, and seeing renewed tensions between governors and mayors as they disagree over how much to pull back on the reopening.

In some ways, the situation in Florida differs from the worst days of the pandemic in New York.

Some of the increase in cases reflects the dramatic increase in testing; Florida is testing several times the number of people that New York was at the height of its crisis. The spread of the disease amid the Florida sun does not play out with the same dread as it did in crowded city streets in New York. Hospitals are better supplied and somewhat more prepared to treat patients than they were in March and April. And while the daily death toll in Florida climbed to a high last week, it remains far below the levels that New York suffered, at least for now.

“It was very difficult to figure out how to test, now it’s a little easier,” Mr. DeSantis, a Republican, told reporters on Saturday, adding that concerns about equipment supplies had eased as well.

“These are now tools in the toolbox,” he added. “If somebody comes in, they can be treated for this.”

On the other hand, there is something demoralizing, if sadly predictable, in seeing the virus make a comeback both in communities that had expected it to fade and began easing restrictions, and others that had tried to maintain safety measures only for residents to ignore them.

“We expected this to happen,” said Jay Wolfson, a professor of public health and medicine at the University of South Florida. “The calculus for this disease is proximity, congestion and time,” he added. “You had people going to parties, you had restaurants open up, you had bars open up, you had beaches open up. You had graduation parties for students.”

Even with the dramatic spike in cases and sickness in the state, many Floridians remain blasé about the virus and averse to the simple act of wearing a mask to prevent its spread.

On Clearwater Beach, in Pinellas County on Florida’s western coast, Jason Dormois, 17, part of a crew handling sun lounges, said he was not worried. “I’m out in the sun, I’m a healthy young man,” he said. He said he had been out of his job for two months and stuck at home, and “people need the money.”

Others were appalled people were not taking the virus more seriously.

“It’s asinine. The way people are acting — look at the beach. Not one mask,” said Anthony Babcock, 47, who had worked in music publishing. He added: “And those who say it’s a free country — it’s not about being a free country. It’s about being smart. We’ll see what happens in two weeks.”

From the start, the response to the virus has been defined by a tug of war, as officials have had to balance taking aggressive steps to inhibit its spread with limiting the array of economic and social consequences those measures unleashed.

Now, that balance is being calibrated yet again as the outbreak is growing across 37 states, and eight states — all but one in the South or Southwest — set single-day death records over the last week: Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Tennessee.

The states seeing the record increases were often among those where officials had delayed implementing stay-at-home orders in the spring and moved quickly to ease the restrictions they did put in place.

Now, many officials are preaching caution. In Mississippi, Gov. Tate Reeves, a Republican, betrayed his frustration as he urged residents to wear masks and follow social distancing measures. “Nothing is going to work unless people will just follow the rules that are in place,” he said in a recent news conference. “I know I sound like a broken record.”

Masks will be required in Louisiana starting on Monday, as the virus has intensified in a state that had been one of the early hot spots.

“If you don’t like the mask mandate, then don’t like it,” said Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, “but wear your mask anyway if you’re going to be out in public.”

In the Houston area, one of the hardest hit, coronavirus cases and hospitalizations have remained extremely high. The Texas health department reported 1,747 positive coronavirus tests on Saturday in greater Houston, more than triple the April peak; a seven-day trend line in new cases has held fairly steady since late June. Last week, more than 11 percent of coronavirus tests were positive, compared with 16 percent the previous week and nearly 7 percent in late April. Medical centers have been creating new coronavirus intensive care units, including in post-surgical recovery rooms and previously shuttered wards.

Maintaining adequate staffing has been a key challenge, with hundreds of local medical professionals out sick or in quarantine. Managers are offering bonuses to nurses, attempting to hire new ones, and reassigning staff from other specialties.

A color-coded designation that signals to ambulance crews which hospitals are busiest and should be avoided has lost its meaning now that most hospitals are operating well beyond their typical capacity. For emergency departments and intensive care units, “It’s pretty much been entirely reading ‘saturation’ in red for weeks now,” said Dr. David Persse, medical director of the Houston Fire Department. “Our local rule that everybody knows is that when everybody’s closed, everybody’s open.”

Two public hospitals that serve as a safety net for Houston-area patients who are uninsured and those with Medicaid have been particularly hard pressed. “The only way they’ve maintained any semblance of sanity is we basically transfer patients as soon as we receive them,” after stabilizing and assessing them, said Dr. Esmaeil Porsa, chief executive of the Harris Health System, the public system. “As soon as a bed becomes empty, someone rolls up from the emergency room.”

Florida has recorded more than 269,800 cases, with more than 4,200 total deaths, according to a New York Times database. There were also single-day records on Sunday in the counties that include Florida’s largest cities, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Fort Myers, West Palm Beach, Pensacola and Sarasota.

The latest data shows the increasing strains that Florida hospitals are under. Some 43 intensive care units in 21 Florida counties have hit capacity and have no beds available. Doctors are working longer hours and, faced with shortages of the key drug remdesivir, doctors and nurses are having to choose between patients and even to change the remdesivir criteria to use it later in the disease.

Still, many residents continued to flout health guidelines.

In Ybor City, a popular area of Tampa lined with pirate-themed bars, tattoo parlors and cigar shops, restaurants were open. At Zydeco Brew Werks, a sign was posted on the front door reading: “City ordinance: a face mask is required to enter this establishment.”

And yet, no one wore a mask inside, except for the employees. There might have been fewer people compared to the days before the pandemic, yet little else about the atmosphere was different.

Kent White, who wore a bandanna that said “Make America Strong Again,” said he tried to keep his face covered, but he was still frustrated by the economic devastation caused by the virus. He said his business building gondolas had suffered because of supply chain disruptions, and he couldn’t get raw materials into the country from China.

“We can’t keep the country shut down,” Mr. White, 60, said. “It’s done so much damage to this country, and that continues to damage people.”

Bradley Wasinda, 47, who works at a restaurant, said he had tried to encourage patrons to cover their faces when in the restaurant but not eating. But the effort was futile.

“Can I be honest with you? I’ve given up on trying to enforce it,” he said, describing the fiery responses his requests incited. “I gave up,” he said. “I’m over it.”

Florida has seen protests over shutdown measures

Florida has registered a state record of 15,299 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours – around a quarter of all of the United States’ daily infections.

The state, with just 7% of the US population, surpassed the previous daily record held by California.

Florida, which began lifting coronavirus restrictions in May, has proved vulnerable due to tourism and an elderly population.

Its figures eclipse the worst daily rates seen in New York in April.

Florida also registered an additional 45 deaths.

The state would rank fourth in the world for new cases if it were a country, according to a Reuters analysis. More than 40 hospitals in Florida say their intensive care facilities are at full capacity.

The latest figures were released a day after Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida reopened, but with safety measures including mask-wearing and widespread use of sanitiser.

The caseload in Florida has continued to rise despite Republican Governor Ron DeSantis ordering some bars to close again last month.

The top adviser on the White House coronavirus taskforce, Dr Anthony Fauci, had criticised lockdown easing in the state, saying the data on infections did not support the move. Mr DeSantis has also declined to make mask-wearing obligatory.

The issue of masks has become highly politicised in the United States, with opponents saying having to wear them encroaches on personal freedom. There have been demonstrations against masks and other coronavirus measures in several states.

But on Saturday, President Donald Trump appeared wearing a mask in the public for the first time after previously casting doubt on their usefulness. He was visiting the Walter Reed military hospital outside Washington, where he met wounded soldiers and health care workers.

“I’ve never been against masks but I do believe they have a time and a place,” he said as he left the White House.

The United States overall has been exceeding new daily totals of 60,000 cases for the past few days. Other states including Arizona, California and Texas continue to see a rising cases.

Since the pandemic hit the US, more than 134,000 people there have died with Covid-19.

Texas officials announced nearly 7,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, breaking the state’s record for the total number of confirmed cases in one day.

The new daily record of 6,975 cases sits far higher than the state’s previous record of around 6,000 cases.

The news comes as trend lines indicate that the rate of new infections in the state is sharply accelerating even as other hot spots such as New York have seen levels of new cases receding.

More new records in today’s COVID data from @KVUE:

-Texas logged 6,975 new cases today, topping the previous single-day record by almost 1,000.

State officials have struggled to explain the sharp rise in cases, with Gov. Greg Abbott (R) explaining in a recent interview that Texas should have slowed efforts to reopen some businesses, including bars.

“If I could go back and redo anything, it probably would have been to slow down the opening of bars, now seeing in the aftermath of how quickly the coronavirus spread in the bar setting,” he told KVIA in El Paso.

The state moved to close bars once again last week and ordered restaurants to operate at 50 percent capacity.

“At this time, it is clear that the rise in cases is largely driven by certain types of activities, including Texans congregating in bars,” Abbott said in a statement last week.

“The actions in this executive order are essential to our mission to swiftly contain this virus and protect public health. We want this to be as limited in duration as possible. However, we can only slow the spread if everyone in Texas does their part,” he added.

Florida has continued its morbid streak of breaking coronavirus records — reporting 9,585 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday, the state’s Department of Health confirmed.

Saturday’s tally surpassed Friday’s record-breaking 8,942 cases and brings the Sunshine State’s total of confirmed cases to 132,525, according to the Miami Herald.

Florida has reported nearly 40,000 new infections in just over a week — which accounts for about a third of all cases since the pandemic began, the newspaper reported.

There were also 24 new deaths reported Saturday, bringing the statewide death toll to 3,390, the Herald said.

In an attempt to control the resurgence, the state issued an immediate shutdown of alcohol consumption in bars Friday, while Miami moved to close beaches and parks — all just in time for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

However, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has continued to resist making face masks a statewide mandate.
