]]>Authorities in Salt Lake City released body camera video Monday that shows an officer shooting a 13-year-old boy after his mother called 911 because the teen was acting out and needed help.
In the disturbing video from Sept. 4, the teen can be seen running from police and not complying when an officer orders him to the ground. Moments before one of the officers opens fire, another can be heard saying, “Pull your hands out.”
It isn’t clear whether the teen, whom NBC News is not identifying because of his age, was armed. A Salt Lake City police statement released Monday didn’t say, and the department didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
The teen suffered injuries to his intestines, ankles, shoulder and bladder, and he remains in a hospital, according to an online fundraising campaign.
The boy’s mother, Golda Barton, told a dispatcher that she wanted a “crisis intervention officer” sent to her home in the Glendale area of Salt Lake City because her son had threatened to shoot one of her co-workers and break the windows in their home, according to audio also released Monday by the Salt Lake City Police Department. She also said he’d been in a “shootout” in Nevada and a high-speed chase with police.
“He’s sick,” she said. “He needs to go to the hospital.”

It isn’t clear whether the police dispatched to the home were crisis intervention officers, who receive 40 hours of training in mental health issues and policing, according to the department. In the statement released Monday, the department said all new officers are required to attend its crisis intervention academy, but it didn’t say whether any of the officers involved in the Sept. 4 shooting had received that training.
None of the officers involved in the shooting have been identified. It wasn’t clear whether they had been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, as is standard protocol at other law enforcement agencies. The department said it was releasing the video and audio to be transparent.
In the 911 audio, Barton can be heard telling the dispatcher that her father was killed by sheriff’s deputies in Nevada this year and that her son “does not like cops at all.”
“That’s why we need a mental health worker,” she said. “It’s super important.”
Efforts to reach Barton on Monday were unsuccessful, but in an interview with NBC affiliate KSL this month she described the teen’s mental health struggles and said she called 911 after consulting with his psychiatrist.
In the video, Barton can be seen telling the officers that her son was out of control and threatening to break things. When one of the officers asked whether the teen had any weapons, she responded that he had a BB gun but added that it wasn’t real.
“Unfortunately, we have to treat them all as if they are,” the officer said.
In the video, three officers can be seen approaching Barton’s home and knocking on the door. They then run to the back yard, where one can be heard saying the teen had jumped a fence.
The officers chased the teen, who can be seen slowly walking away from them as they order him to the ground. Moments later, one of the officers can be seen firing multiple times and ordering the teen to show his hands after he’s been shot.
“I don’t feel good,” he responds. “Tell my mom I love her.”

]]>Bodycam footage shows a member of the Aurora Police Department in Colorado pointing his weapon at a doctor in an office building parking lot, according to a report.
The video captures the tense moments in March between Dr. P.J. Parmar and the officer, Fox 31 Denver reports. Parmar said he is preparing a civil rights lawsuit over the encounter.
Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man, died last year in Aurora after police stopped him. The state reopened an investigation into the case amid national protests after the death in May of George Floyd, who was Black, in police custody in Minneapolis.

Parmar, who runs a medical clinic for refugees and asylum seekers, said the encounter began when he saw the officer’s patrol car in a parking lot adjoning an office building he owns.
“I stopped immediately. I beeped at him to get his attention and I knew there was going to be something interesting, so I started filming him,” Parmar told the station.
In the footage, the officer is heard saying, “Let me see your f—— hands. What are you doing?” according to the station.
Parmar then tells the officer. “You’re on my property, leave,” the station reported.
The doctor told the station having the gun pointed at his head was “a mix of being scared, and it’s a mix of being annoyed and frustrated.”

In the video, Parmar tells the officer to get off his property while he continues to unload some Boy Scout gear he was dropping off, the station reported. Eventually, the police leave.
The officer who confronted Parmar is facing an internal affairs investigation. Aurora PD told Fox 31 it couldn’t comment on that investigation.
The body cam footage captures Henderson telling another officer that Parmar was the instigator, the station reported.

“I was typing a report and he comes rolling in here like he’s about to assault me with his car,” the officer says, according to the station.

]]>Authorities in Alabama showed body-camera video Monday of a police officer punching a liquor store owner who called 911 to report a robbery in March.
The owner of the store, Kevin Penn, of Decatur, suffered a broken jaw in the confrontation March 15 and was charged with obstruction after refusing to put down a gun, NBC affiliate WAFF of Huntsville reported.

The video shows the officer striking Penn after a brief argument.
Penn’s lawyer, Carl Cole, told AL.com that Penn showed the gun to the officers to make sure they knew he was armed. He then removed the clip and ejected the bullet from the chamber, Cold told the site.
Decatur Police Chief Nate Allen told reporters that the officer punched Penn “when he became more agitated and angry” and put his hand over a gun on the store counter.
“That’s what caused the immediate charge of the officer,” he said.
Asked whether it was proper procedure to punch someone, Allen said the department’s policies require using the least amount of force “to get the job done.”
“I’d much rather have a punch than a shooting,” he added.
Allen said a suspect was later apprehended for shoplifting at the liquor store. The officer who punched Penn is on administrative duty during an internal investigation, he said.

New bodycam video obtained by First Coast News Tuesday shows police in Georgia attempting to tase Ahmaud Arbery’s during a confrontation back in 2017.
The November 7 video shows Arbery appearing to refuse Glynn County Police when they asked to search his car after being questioned. As he walks back towards his car he says to the two officers: “You can’t go in my car…. you can’t go in my s****.”
One of the officers then yells “keep your hands out your pockets” and attempts to fire a taser at Arbery but it doesn’t work. Arbery is then told to get down on the ground and complies.
A second officer says that Arbery had already been checked for weapons.
In the video, Arbery explains he was trying to sit in his car and rap. The officer responds saying that they get a lot of gang and drug activity in that area.
According to an AP report, officers said Arbery was free to go but could not take his vehicle because his license was suspended.
The Ahmaud Arbery case has trained a spotlight on Glynn County and the work of police and prosecutors in the area.
A First Coast News investigation reveals the Arbery case is just the latest in a string of cases that raised concerns about a history of toxic culture and cover-ups within Glynn County law enforcement; cover-ups that recently led to an explosive grand jury report and criminal indictment of the Glynn County Police Chief and several high ranking officers.
Gregory and Travis McMichael are charged with murder and aggravated assault in Arbery’s death. A video released to the public this month shows the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Protesters are now calling for the justice system to do its job in the investigation, which many say has taken too long to result in the arrests of both McMichael men, weeks after Arbery died.
Two months went by with no arrests when the case was in the hands of Brunswick DA Jackie Johnson and the Glynn County Police Department.
An arrest warrant states that Travis McMichael shot and killed Ahmaud Arbery, and it says that Greg McMichael, Travis’ father aided and abetted his son in the commission of this crime.
Arbery was killed Feb. 23 after a pursuit by the McMichaels, white father and son who armed themselves and gave chase after seeing the 25-year-old black man in their subdivision.
More than two months passed before they were jailed on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault.
Gregory McMichael, a retired investigator for the local district attorney, told police he thought Arbery was a burglar. He said Arbery attacked his son before he was shot.
Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, has said she believes her son was out jogging.
The delay in criminal charges and a cellphone video of the shooting leaked shortly before the May 7 arrests fueled national outrage over Arbery’s death.
