]]>Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden drew a rash of criticism over his declaration Sunday that he would defer to scientists on whether to lock down the economy to control the novel coronavirus.
Asked if he would shut down economic activity if recommended by scientists, Mr. Biden said in an ABC News interview, “I would shut it down. I would listen to the scientists,” a prescription that Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican, described as “madness.”
” ‘I would shut it down,’ ” Mr. Cruz tweeted. “This is the Biden economic agenda. Destroy every small business in America. Kill tens of millions more jobs. This is madness.”
Other critics argued that scientists have been divided in their response to COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, and that the president’s role is to take into account a host of considerations, including the economy and the national interest, when deciding whether to order a shutdown.
Jenny Beth Martin, chairman of the Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund, said that Mr. Biden “would rather send us into a long-term depression if it meant having to overrule the ‘experts’ and show real leadership.”
“Faceless bureaucrats with no accountability to the citizens of our country have no authority to make such decisions; empowering them to do so would be wrong on its face,” Ms. Martin said in a statement. “Worse, his statement indicates a mistaken belief that a president has the power and authority to shut down the country if he so desires.”
“I would shut it down.”

Mr. Biden, appearing in a joint interview with Sen. Kamala D. Harris, the vice presidential nominee, also criticized President Trump’s response to the pandemic.
“I will be prepared to do whatever it takes to save lives because we cannot get the country moving until we control the virus,” Mr. Biden said. “That is the fundamental flaw of this administration’s thinking to begin with. In order to keep the country running and moving and the economy growing, and people employed, you have to fix the virus, you have to deal with the virus.”
Asked, “So if the scientists say, shut it down?” Mr. Biden replied, “I would shut it down. I would listen to the scientists.”
The backlash was contagious. Trump 2020 campaign adviser Jason Miller tweeted, “Biden says he’d defer to scientists on Covid-19 lockdowns. That’s not a President’s job.”
Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, asked: “Would that include 446,030 Texans who tested positive but have since recovered?”
“Even Dr. [Anthony] Fauci is saying that the shutdowns shouldn’t continue in the same manner,” tweeted Dr. David Samadi. “Why does Joe Biden want to keep America closed indefinitely?”
In a Monday staff editorial, the Wall Street Journal said that the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee’s comments “misjudge the duty of a president.”
“Mr. Biden says he’d order another shutdown if scientists say it would save lives,” said the editorial. “But by that standard he’d have to keep the economy constrained for months and for many contagious diseases. He wants to blame Mr. Trump for unemployment but another lockdown would cost millions more jobs. A President has to consider the larger national interest, and that means listening to economists and health experts beyond epidemiologists.”
Others argued that what Mr. Biden meant is that he would “follow the advice of scientists,” as actress Mia Farrow tweeted.
Former Obama White House speechwriter Jon Favreau warned, “Get ready for a bunch of Trump hacks to spin a bunch of credulous reporters that Biden saying he’ll follow the advice of scientists and public health officials is a controversial position.”

]]>Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is facing intense backlash for claiming that criticism over his controversial nursing home policy is “politically motivated.”
Through much of the coronavirus outbreak, there has been growing scrutiny over the Democratic governor’s order in late March that forced nursing homes to accept patients who tested positive for coronavirus, despite testing deficiencies for both residents and staff. Cuomo signed an executive order on May 11 reversing the policy, stopping hospitals from sending infected patients back to nursing homes and ramping up testing for staff.
Last month, roughly 7,900 people have either been confirmed or presumed dead from COVID-19 in nursing homes in New York, according to the state’s health department. That equates to approximately 25 percent of all deaths in the state have occurred in nursing homes, per the latest state total from the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.

However, when pressed at Friday’s briefing on why he doesn’t appoint an independent investigator to assess the nursing home deaths amid the criticism of his state’s own report, Cuomo dismissed such concerns.
“I don’t believe your characterization is correct. I believe it is a political issue. I think it’s the New York Post, I think it’s Michael Goodwin, I think it’s Bob McManus, I think it’s Fox TV. I think it is all politically motivated,” Cuomo said. “If anybody looked at the facts, they would know that it was wholly absurd on its face. People died in nursing homes. That’s very unfortunate. Just on the top line, we have- we are number 35th in the nation in percentage of deaths in nursing homes. Go talk to 34 other states first. Go talk to the Republican states now, Florida, Texas, Arizona. Ask them what is happening in nursing homes. It’s all politics.”

Fox News senior meteorologist Janice Dean, whose husband lost both of his parents in nursing homes from COVID-19 amid the state’s controversial policy, slammed Cuomo’s remarks.
“Dear @NYGovCuomo, the criticism about your nursing home policy is not about politics. It’s about getting answers on why you helped spread Coronavirus through their facilities. Blaming everyone else for your problems won’t make them go away,” Dean tweeted.
Others ripped the top Democrat of New York on social media.

“There goes the New York governor attacking the free press again over legitimate criticism over his nursing policy of sending COVID-19 patents back into nursing homes and killing more than 6,000 people again…” Joe Concha, media reporter for The Hill, reacted.
“Andrew Cuomo says criticizing him over his nursing home policy ‘is all politically motivated’. Pretty sure it’s motivated by the families of the New Yorkers who died,” The Federalist publisher Ben Domenech tweeted.
Bill Hammond, Empire Center health policy director, refuted Cuomo’s claim by sharing all the reporting that’s been done on his nursing home policy, including The Associated Press, ProPublica, Jacobin Magazine, and New York Daily News.
“Is some of the commentary over-the-top? Of course,” Hammond wrote. “In retrospect, though, a wide range of experts, journalists and commentators agree the March 25 order was a mistake that, at a minimum, risked making a bad situation worse. Dismissing this view as “all politics” is a disservice to the public health.”

]]>Mayor Bill de Blasio has drawn outrage over his tweet slamming a huge funeral for a rabbi who died of COVID-19 in which he said he instructed police to make arrests if necessary – while organizers claimed Hizzoner had actually approved the gathering in the first place.
Hundreds of Orthodox Jews gathered Tuesday night in the streets near Rutledge Street and Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg to pay their respects for the rabbi, identified by The Yeshiva World as Chaim Mertz.
“Something absolutely unacceptable happened in Williamsburg tonite: a large funeral gathering in the middle of this pandemic,” de Blasio wrote on Twitter.
“When I heard, I went there myself to ensure the crowd was dispersed. And what I saw WILL NOT be tolerated so long as we are fighting the Coronavirus,” he said.
“My message to the Jewish community, and all communities, is this simple: the time for warnings has passed,” the mayor added. “I have instructed the NYPD to proceed immediately to summons or even arrest those who gather in large groups. This is about stopping this disease and saving lives. Period.”

On Wednesday, the NYPD reported no summonses or arrests from the funeral.
Late Tuesday, a tweet by Satmar Headquarters said the funeral had been approved by the mayor.
“2 hours b4 it started, PD brought trucks with barriers/tower lights to close off Bedford Avenue and the surrounding area. It’s the @NYCMayor ’s Dept who originally approved it before deciding to take it back,” it said.
On Wednesday, City Hall spokeswoman Olivia Lapeyrolerie told The Post: “There was no event permit issued for this gathering.”
Anti-Defamation League head Jonathan Greenblatt blasted de Blasio for his comments.
“Hey @NYCMayor, there are 1mil+ Jewish people in #NYC. The few who don’t social distance should be called out — but generalizing against the whole population is outrageous especially when so many are scapegoating Jews,” he said in a tweet.
“This erodes the very unity our city needs now more than ever,” Greenblatt added.
Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, recommended Wednesday that his organization formally censure the mayor.
“Last night, the Mayor painted the Jewish community as lawbreakers and unconcerned about the city’s public health. I agree with the Mayor that social distancing is vitally important — and last night’s gathering was not appropriate,” Lauder said in a statement.
“But to blame the entire Jewish community is the type of stereotyping that is dangerous and unacceptable at any time, and particularly pernicious while the world is gripped in fear and the worst among us are looking for scapegoats,” he said.
Lauder added: “Mayor de Blasio needs to realize that while he, like all of us, believes in the importance of social distancing, every time a leader like him stereotypes the ‘Jewish community,’ he feeds into the dangerous agenda of white supremacists and anti-Semites around the world. It needs to end.”
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) also weighed in.
“Would DeBlasio have sent this identical tweet with the word ‘Jewish’ replaced by any other religious minority? If not, why not? Laws should be enforced neutrally w/o targeting religious faith. #ProtectFreeExercise,” he tweeted.
Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro said: “I can’t imagine de Blasio saying this about any other community. It’s pretty amazing. And for the record, MANY of the leaders of the Jewish community have taken strong stands on social distancing.”
Twitter user Sofia Bitela wrote: “This is really a tone deaf and disgusting tweet by the mayor. First of all, the Haredi rarely intermingle outside of their community. How are they a threat to other New Yorkers?”
She added: “Second, they may the community closet to herd immunity in NYC or the US. Leave them alone.”
But others defended de Blasio amid the backlash, including his wife Chirlane McCray, who said his “response was directed at those who were not social distancing.”
“The last thing we need are more funerals. So I think that it is right for the mayor to take a strong stance,” the first lady said on CNN.
“Of course, you know most people are doing the right thing. And that’s, that’s, you know, we don’t mean to that to be extended to them,” she said. “It’s just those people who are not following the guidelines that have been laid down federally by the state and in the city, to keep people safe.”
Twitter user @SimonPhoenix wrote: “The comments under this are full of idiots calling Bill de Blasio an anti-Semite. No you morons, this isn’t anti-semetism (sic). Parts of the Hasidic Jewish community in New York act as if they’re above the law here & always have. About time an NYC mayor had the balls to call them out.”
User John Montoya said he applauded the mayor and police.
“THIS IS SERIOUS , DEADLY I’D TELL YOU TO ASK 59,000+ AMERICANS BUT THEY CAN NO LONGER TELL YOU THIS IS NOT ABOUT JEWS THIS IS ABOUT HUMANS !!!!” he wrote.

]]>The Washington Post was slammed late Monday night for its bizarre framing of the latest developments that emerged surrounding the allegations made by Biden accuser Tara Reade.
Reade, who came forward last month accusing former Vice President Joe Biden of sexual assault as a Senate staffer in 1993, has had more corroborating evidence surface in recent days.
A clip from “Larry King Live” back in 1993 purportedly showing Reade’s mother calling into the show anonymously and alluded to her daughter’s “problems” she had with a “prominent senator” was brought to light on Friday. And on Monday, two more people, a former neighbor and a former colleague of Reade’s, came forward to back her claims after conversations they’ve had back in the 90s.
However, a piece published by The Post raised eyebrows with its original headline that read, “Developments in allegations against Biden amplify efforts to question his behavior.”
Not long after it was published, a new headline appeared in the report, “Trump allies highlight new claims regarding allegations against Biden.”
“Some allies of President Trump pointed Monday to new claims by a woman who said she was told about sexual assault allegations against Joe Biden decades ago, renewing attention to questions about the past behavior of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee,” Washington Post reporter Matt Viser began.
The transcript of the “Larry King Live” clip was first reported by The Intercept, the outlet founded by progressive journalist Glenn Greenwald, and conservative watchdog group the Media Research Center later found the clip in its archives. Rich McHugh of Business Insider, who previously worked at NBC News after having had collaborated with Ronan Farrow on the Harvey Weinstein scandal, was the journalist who broke Monday’s bombshell report.
As far as actual “Trump allies,” the Post cites tweets made by the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., in reaction to the developments and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who simply said the Biden allegations should be as scrutinized as the one leveled against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his 2018 confirmation.
NEIGHBOR, COLLEAGUE REPORTEDLY BACK BIDEN ACCUSER TARA READE’S CLAIMS
The report went on to note that it has “been a topic for other top Democrats,” pointing to remarks made by potential VP candidates Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer despite the widespread silence among top Democratic lawmakers about the Biden allegations.
Viser, who was one of the reporters behind the paper’s first report about Reade’s claims on Easter Sunday, also mentioned the misconduct allegations Trump has faced.
The Post was widely panned on social media, some even pointing out the drastically different coverage Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh received when he was accused of misconduct during his 2018 confirmation.

“As an editor, I regard this headline as a hate crime and I will be pressing charges first thing in the morning,” Washington Examiner executive editor Seth Mandel reacted on Twitter.
Biden himself has not addressed the claims from Reade — but his campaign vehemently has denied the allegations. Biden’s Deputy Campaign Manager Kate Bedingfield said in a statement: “What is clear about this claim: it is untrue. This absolutely did not happen.”
Reade on Monday confirmed to Fox News the accuracy of how her conversations with former next-door neighbor Lynda LaCasse and former colleague Lorraine Sanchez were described and expressed her deep gratitude toward them for coming forward.
“I am touched that they would step forward knowing the targeted harassment I have received since I made my history with Joe Biden public. I appreciate their candor and bravery,” Reade said in a statement.
Earlier, a friend of Reade’s claimed to have been told about the alleged assault at the time it happened but chose to remain anonymous, and her brother, Collin Moulton, recalled Reade describing an incident with Biden involving a “gym bag.” The friend and Moulton both gave interviews to the Intercept.
LaCasse told Business Insider: “I remember her saying, here was this person that she was working for and she idolized him. And he kind of put her up against a wall. And he put his hand up her skirt and he put his fingers inside her. She felt like she was assaulted, and she really didn’t feel there was anything she could do.”
LaCasse said Reade was “upset” when she told her about the allegation and “the more she talked about it, the more she started crying.” She said she remembered urging Reade to file a police report but did not recall specific details from the alleged incident, such as the location or remarks Biden allegedly made to Reade.
“I don’t remember all the details,” LaCasse told Business Insider. “I remember the skirt. I remember the fingers. I remember she was devastated.”
LaCasse, a retired staffer of San Luis Obispo General Hospital, said she lived in the same apartment complex as Reade in Morro Bay, Calif. She recalled how the two of them had talked about “violent stories” they’ve experienced, which was when Reade told her “about the senator that she had worked for and he put his hand up her skirt.”
“I personally am a Democrat, a very strong Democrat,” LaCasse said. “I’m for Biden, regardless. But still, I have to come out and say this.”
Reade’s former neighbor said she “volunteered” to come forward, saying, “If this was me, I would want somebody to stand up for me. It takes a lot of guts to do what she’s doing.”
“I have to support her just because that’s what happened,” LaCasse continued. “We need to stand up and tell the truth.”
Sanchez, who was working as a staffer for California State Senator Jack O’Connell, said she mentored and worked with Reade between 1994 and 1996.

Sanchez said she did not recall Reade referring to Biden by name but remembered “reassuring her that nothing like that would ever happen to her here in our office, that she was in a safe place, free from any sexual harassment.”
“It takes great courage and strength to come forward,” Sanchez said in praising Reade. “It’s much easier to keep silent. However, I also understand the duty we have as women to share our story regardless of who the perpetrator may be.”
