]]>A massive fire has broken out at Beirut port on Thursday, a little more than a month since a huge blast devastated the port facilities and surrounding area.
The Washington Post’s Beirut Bureau Chief Liz Sly tweeted that the Lebanese army has told people to evacuate the vicinity around the duty-free zone, and video is circulating on social media showing workers fleeing the area.

Local TV stations said the companies that have offices near the port have asked their employees to leave the area and Lebanese troops closed the major road that passes near the port referring traffic to other areas, according to the Associated Press.
Although it was not immediately clear what caused the fire at the facility, the state-run National News Agency reported that the fire was at a warehouse where tires are placed.
Middle East Eye correspondent Ragip Soylu wrote on Twitter that the Lebanese Army confirmed a fire had broken out in a tire warehouse and that extinguishing operations — including the use of army helicopters — have already begun.
Soylu said authorities assured the fire would not lead to an explosion.
AJ English online correspondent Timour Azhari tweeted that there had also been “a smaller fire a couple [of] days ago that civil defense said they put out.”
TIME’s Rebecca Collard tweeted an ominous video showing a sky filled with dark smoke.
“Some of these [buildings] still don’t have windows after the #BeirutBlast a month ago and now they are being engulfed by (likely poisonous) black smoke,” she wrote.
Police spokesman Col. Joseph Msalam told the Associated Press they have no information about what is happening at the port, adding that the facility is currently under control of the army.
When questioned about reports that the fire was caused by burning tires and oil, he said: “I don’t know. It could be containers. I really don’t know what is there.”

The Aug. 4 explosion killed more than 190 people, injured around 6,500, and damaged thousands of buildings in the Lebanese capital after nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrates detonated.
Last week, the military discovered more than 4 tons of ammonium nitrate near the port and said it was “dealing with the material.”

]]>Rescuers in Beirut frantically dug through rubble early Friday from a deadly explosion that rocked the capital a month before after a pulsing signal discovered Thursday raised hopes that someone could be alive underneath the destroyed building.
A sniffer dog with a Chilean search-and-rescue team first detected something on Gemmayzeh Street — one of the hardest hit in the Aug. 4 blast — as the team swept that part of the city. Then using audio detection equipment, the team found what could be a very slow heartbeat – about 19 beats a minute.
The search was suspended for the night Thursday but some volunteers continued to comb through the rubble in the darkness.

At least 191 people were killed and more than 6,000 injured when nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate ignited at the post in early August.
Rescuers acknowledged it’s unlikely someone could survive underneath a demolished building for a month but refused to be deterred from the effort.
“Ninety-nine percent there isn’t anything, but even if there is less than 1% hope, we should keep on looking,” said Youssef Malah, a civil defense worker. He said his men would continue working throughout the night Thursday, adding that the work was extremely sensitive.

Francesco Lermonda, a Chilean volunteer, however, said the equipment detected the sign of a human and it’s not impossible for people to survive for 30 days under those conditions.

]]>Ambulances ferried newly injured demonstrators to hospitals even as the death toll in Tuesday’s explosion and fireball climbed to at least 158 people.
An elderly man with gray hair was carried out of the crowd, an eye out and bleeding from the head. The Red Cross said 26 ambulances were responding, with at least 28 people taken to hospitals and more than 100 treated at the scene.
As the clashes moved through the streets, a group of protesters took over the country’s foreign ministry, jubilantly setting up a protest camp in its marble-floored rooms.
But the mood was overwhelmingly dark and desperate.
Calls for retributions against corrupt leaders abounded.
“Resign or hang,” read one posting for the demonstration that circulated online. It showed a cedar tree — the symbol of Lebanon — engulfed in flames and two nooses. Demonstrators had erected a large gallows in the square with cardboard cutouts of the leaders of the country’s political factions.
The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of anger among the population, already reeling from economic collapse that has pushed much of its middle class into poverty and chaffing from decades of political corruption and cronyism.
The fury has been directed at the full spectrum of Lebanon’s political factions, including the powerful Shiite militia Hezbollah, which is widely believed to wield control over the port where 2,750 metric tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate sat unsecured for more than six years.
“Have you seen my son?” the mother of 23-year Joe Akiki, an electrician at the port who died in the blast, screamed into a microphone in front of the gathered crowd. “He has beautiful hazel eyes. Where are you my son? You buried our sons.”
Those gathered held up pictures of the victims of the blast, which left about 6,000 people were injured. Some 21 people are still missing, according to the Ministry of Health.
“Murdered, not martyred,” read one sign held by a demonstrator. “Leave, you garbage,” another.
Earlier in the day in Mar Mikhael, a neighborhood packed with bars and restaurants that stretches up from the port, activists had set up a wooden gallows.
In the neighboring Gemmayze area, where young volunteers have led the clear-up operation with little sign of any government assistance, Beirut’s governor, Marwan Abboud, was met with chants of “Revolution!” by furious residents. One person held up a rope fashioned into a hangman’s noose as Abboud hurried to leave in his black SUV.
“Some people who never took to the streets are going today with a vengeance,” said Hussein El-Achi of the Min Tishreen activist group, who said it was not about the numbers. “It’s about the rage that will be in the demonstration.”
Security forces had sent reinforcements to the downtown area, who later called for peaceful demonstrators to move away from areas where violence was taking place.
“We will not accept the exposure of our forces, especially after so many have been wounded in our ranks,” Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces said in a statement.
Lebanese television channel Al-Jadeed quoted a fire official saying that his forces were asked to participate in “suppressing protesters,” but the force lost 10 members in the blast and did not have the capacity. He denied that there was a “mutiny” among members over the order.
“They stole for us, they looted us they made us go hungry, they made us poor,” said 56-year-old Wafaa, sitting in an unfinished cinema downtown known as “The Egg.” She declined to give her last name for privacy reasons.
“We were going to die in our own house,” she said, referring to the explosion. “We were already dying slowly,” chipped in her 15-year-old son Tarek.
A mass demonstration movement against government corruption erupted in Lebanon in October last year but waned in recent months, even as the standard of living has plummeted. The Lebanese pound has lost at least two-thirds of its value since the fall, slashing the value of people’s salaries as prices have risen.
“Money is just a number now, it’s worthless,” said Imad Mukhalalati, a 50-year-old taxi driver. “I’m not sad, I’m angry.”
Shadi Alame, 29, was buying a face mask printed with the Lebanese flag on the main drag of Gemmayze before heading to demonstrations. He said the whole system was to blame “from top to bottom.”
“It’s all the politicians from the president to Nasrallah to Berri,” he said, referring to Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah and Nabih Berri, the speaker of the parliament and head of the Amal movement. “They are stealing everyone’s money, stealing people’s rights.”
In a speech Friday, Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s leader, warned Friday not to hold the Shiite militia responsible for the blast.
“If you want to start a battle against the resistance over this incident, you will get no results,” Nasrallah said, referring to the Iranian-backed militia that is also a dominant force in the country’s politics.
“The resistance, with its strength and patriotism, is greater and bigger and stronger than to be hit by those liars who want to push and provoke for civil war,” he added. “They will fail and they will always fail.”
But the anger on the streets is visceral, as the city continued to bury its dead on Saturday and the death toll climbed.
The Dutch government announced that Hedwig Waltmans-Molier, the wife of the country’s ambassador, had died. She had been standing next to Ambassador Jens Waltmans in their living room when the explosion hit. The dead have included children, port workers and firefighters, with rescuers still picking through the rubble. Of those killed, 25 remain unidentified, according to the Ministry of Health.
Adding to the grief and frustration are myriad unanswered questions over what caused the blast.
It is still unclear what caused an initial explosion and fire before another that produced the massive mushroom cloud above the city that experts said was consistent with thousands of tons of ammonium nitrate igniting.
“People refuse to live under their rule anymore,” said El Achi, adding that these would be different to demonstrations last year. “At first we were asking them. We had demands. But today we’re not asking any more, we are acting, we are taking back what is ours.”
He said he expected violence.
“A lot of people already have in mind that today there will be blood.”

]]>A massive explosion shook Lebanon’s capital Beirut on Tuesday, wounding a number of people and causing widespread damage.
The cause of the explosion remains unclear. The government has not issued an official count of injuries or casualties. The Lebanese Red Cross tweeted that more than 30 teams were responding to the scene of the blast via ambulances.
The afternoon blast shook several parts of the capital and thick smoke billowed from the city center. Residents reported windows being blown out and ceilings dropping in.
The explosion appeared to be centered around Beirut’s port and caused wide-scale destruction and shattered windows miles away.
“I saw a fireball and smoke billowing over Beirut. People were screaming and running, bleeding. Balconies were blown off buildings. Glass in high-rise buildings shattered and fell to the street,” one unnamed witness told Reuters.

“We are aware of the explosion and are concerned for the potential loss of life due to such a massive explosion,” Capt. Bill Urban, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, said in a statement to Fox News.

Lebanon’s Health Minister Hamad Hasan told local broadcaster LBC that the explosion in central Beirut had caused a “very high number of injuries” and extensive damage.
An Associated Press photographer near the port witnessed people wounded on the ground and widespread destruction in central Beirut. Some local televisions stations reported the blast originated inside an area where firecrackers were stored.
The explosion happened just days before a United Nations tribunal is expected to issue its verdict on four alleged Hezbollah members accused of killing former Lebanon Prime Minister Rafic Hariri in a 2005 car bombing on the Beirut seafront, the BBC reported.
