]]>The National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) announced its decision to endorse President Trump on Wednesday, after two-thirds of their members expressed their support in a virtual meeting, President Mick McHale explained on Fox News.
In an interview on “Fox News @ Night” with host Shannon Bream, McHale said that they had “organized a virtual meeting” following the instruction of bylaws that have been traditionally utilized since their inception in 1978.

“And, President Trump earned that endorsement with a greater margin of the two-thirds that participated in today’s meeting,” he said. “So, it’s with great pride that I announce on behalf of our National Association of Police Organizations, our endorsement of President Donald J. Trump.”
Former NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kerik, who was also a guest in the show, said that the organization’s endorsement of the president is “enormous,” but “only the beginning.”
NAPO represents more than 1,000 police associations and 241,000 officers. They did not endorse a candidate in the 2016 election but endorsed former President Barack Obama and then-Vice President Joe Biden in both the 2008 and 2012 elections.
“You have to realize, [there are] 800,000 to 900,000 local, state and federal police officers, law enforcement officers in this country. And, if they’re watching the news, if they’re watching what’s going on on a daily basis around the country — whether it’s Atlanta, New York City, Baltimore, Portland, Seattle — the Democrats are completely anti-police, anti-law enforcement,” he remarked.
“If that’s the case, there’s only one vote you need. And, that’s for this president who has consistently…been a super pro-law and order president,” said Kerik.
Bream asked the pair about federal involvement in high-crime cities where Democratic leaders are pushing back on the president.
McHale said he was “excited to hear” what the president’s plan is moving forward, pointing out that elected officials had distorted the president’s executive order to help police officers secure military surplus supplies.
“So we’re excited in anticipation of the president’s announcement,” he reiterated, adding that the president has “continually supported legislation to include [the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act] — things like that. And, we anticipate and hopefully have another four years.”

“Listen, the president’s going to do everything in his power, and I think a lot of this is going to have to do with putting the ATF, the FBI, the DEA and the Marshal Service in these communities start taking out the gangs, start taking out the guns, and cleaning up the communities so that people can live there safely — which is what the Democrats are not doing,” Kerik concluded.

]]>The National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) endorsed President Trump’s reelection Wednesday, praising his “steadfast and very public support” for law enforcement.
NAPO did not endorse a candidate in the 2016 election but endorsed former President Barack Obama and then-Vice President Joe Biden in both the 2008 and 2012 elections.
NAPO President Michael McHale said Trump’s support is needed “during this time of unfair and inaccurate opprobrium being directed at our members by so many.”
“We particularly value your directing the Attorney General to aggressively prosecute those who attack our officers,” McHale wrote in a letter.

The police association, which represents more than 1,000 police associations and 241,000 officers, met with Trump on Monday.
Officers have faced routine disparaging in wake of nationwide racial injustice protests, and some have called out presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden for not condemning anti-police rhetoric.
While Biden’s campaign has staunchly opposed the idea of abolishing police departments, the candidate said that some funding should “absolutely” be redirected from the police.
In a Now This interview with activist Ady Barkan, the presumptive Democratic nominee said police forces don’t need surplus military equipment, saying this is what leads them to “become the enemy” in a community.
Biden campaign Rapid Response Director Andrew Bates said last month that the former vice president supports “the urgent need for reform,” which he said includes “funding for public schools, summer programs, and mental health and substance abuse treatment separate from funding for policing — so that officers can focus on the job of policing.”
The Biden campaign has pointed to the former vice president’s criminal justice plan, which proposes an additional $300 million for community policing. Bates said that the funding would “improve relationships between officers and residents” and would “provide the training that is needed to avert tragic, unjustifiable deaths.”
Trump, for his part, has billed himself as the president of “law and order.” During the NAPO meeting Trump on Monday planned to make his pitch to the National Association of Police Organizations as to why the group should endorse him.
“Our officers have been under vicious assault,” Trump said Monday during a roundtable with people whose lives have been positively impacted by law enforcement. “Reckless politicians have defamed our heroes as the enemy…These radical politicians want to defund and abolish the police.”
Trump added: “My administration is pro-safety, pro-police and anti-crime.”
Despite Biden’s efforts to align with both the protestors and the police, it appears that some police unions are rethinking their backing of him amid concerns that he’s embraced “anti-police rhetoric.”

“Joe Biden was a very strong supporter of them years ago, and he’s been kidnapped now by the anti-police rhetoric,” Paul Digiacomo, the president of the Detective Endowment Association, told Fox Business. “There’s a big question amongst our members if Joe Biden is going to stand up and support the police.”

Mr. McHale said the president’s public praise of law enforcement is needed “during this time of unfair and inaccurate opprobrium being directed at our members by so many.”
“We particularly value your directing the Attorney General to aggressively prosecute those who attack our officers,” he wrote.

Some researchers have hypothesized that drugs that interfere with the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS), including angiotensin-converting–enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs), may increase susceptibility to coronaviruses. This hypothesis is based on the observation that coronaviruses engage ACE2 for cell entry1 and that altered expression of ACE2 is influenced by the use of ACE inhibitors and ARBs, an action that has been shown in animal models.2 Influenza A (H7N9, H1N1, and H5N1) has been shown to use the ACE2 receptor to mediate lung damage, similar to that seen in severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).3 Understanding the shared mechanism between SARS and influenza may help to address the question as to how ACE inhibitors and ARBs may modulate the manifestations of certain viral respiratory infections.
In this study, we used the linked electronic health care records of 5.6 million persons in the United Kingdom from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD)4 to investigate the incidence of influenza among adults (≥18 years of age) who had received a prescription for an ACE inhibitor from 1998 through 2016. Permission for the use of CPRD and Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data for the research was provided by the CPRD independent scientific advisory committee. We defined exposure to an ACE inhibitor as a documented prescription during the study period. We performed additional analyses to assess the association between the incidence of influenza and the duration of use of an ACE inhibitor, which was defined as the sum of prescription days (categorized as none, <0.5 years, 0.5 to <1.5 years, 1.5 to <2.5 years, 2.5 to <3.5 years, 3.5 to <5.0 years, 5.0 to <7.5 years, 7.5 to <10.0 years, and ≥10.0 years). The same methods were used to assess the association between the use of ARBs and the incidence of influenza.
We identified 700,994 persons who had received a prescription for an ACE inhibitor and 230,028 who had received a prescription for an ARB. A total of 4,742,017 persons in the database had not received a prescription for an ACE inhibitor, an ARB, or the direct renin inhibitor aliskiren. Definitions of influenza were drawn from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017,5 including codes J09 through J11.8 of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision. (Details are provided in the Supplementary Appendix, available with the full text of this letter at NEJM.org.) Analyses were adjusted for age at baseline, sex, smoking history, presence of obesity, influenza vaccination, the presence of 12 coexisting conditions (diabetes, hypertension, stable angina, ischemic heart disease, atrial fibrillation, stroke, asthma, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, heart failure, and dementia), and the time period of the influenza outbreak.

During a median 8.7 years of follow-up, persons who had received a prescription for an ACE inhibitor had a lower risk of influenza than those who had not (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.66; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.62 to 0.70) (Figure 1A and 1C). A curvilinear relationship was observed between the number of prescription days and incident influenza. As compared with no prescription days, the hazard ratio for incident influenza was 0.99 (95% CI, 0.91 to 1.07) for a duration of less than 0.5 years, 0.74 (95% CI, 0.65 to 0.85) for a duration of 2.5 to less than 3.5 years, and 0.52 (95% CI, 0.46 to 0.58) for a duration of 5.0 to less than 7.5 years. Analyses comparing the incidence of influenza and the use of ARBs showed results that were similar to the findings with ACE inhibitors (Figure 1B and 1D).
Thus, the use of ACE inhibitors and ARBs was associated with either no effect on the incidence of influenza or a lower incidence, depending on the duration of use. These associations regarding observed susceptibility to influenza may reflect mechanisms that are shared with coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2.
