At least 53 cases of the coronavirus have been traced back to an Aug. 7 wedding and reception in Maine that violated attendance limits, state health officials said. A local hospital said Friday one person whose infection has been linked to the event has died.

About 65 people attended the reception at the Big Moose Inn Cabins and Campground in Millinocket, about 70 miles north of Bangor, the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The Maine governor’s executive orders limit gatherings to 50 people indoors, 100 people outdoors and fewer if the space cannot accommodate five people per 1,000 feet.

Of the 53 cases linked to the reception, 13 were secondary and 10 were tertiary, Maine CDC spokesman Robert Long told NBC News. In other words, it spread to people who did not attend the wedding or reception, but had close contact with individuals who did.

The inn did not immediately return a request for comment Monday. It was cited for what was called an imminent health hazard, which Long said carries no fine but can result in harsher penalties if state officials determine the venue violated health rules again.

The outbreak affected individuals from 4 to 98 years old, officials said.

The Maine CDC advises anyone who attended an event at the inn on Aug. 7, and who has symptoms of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, to contact their health care provider.

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

In a statement Friday, the Millinocket Regional Hospital CEO Robert Peterson said one patient who had been linked to the reception had died. The statement did not identify the patient.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with her family as they cope with this difficult loss,” he said.

The hospital tested 366 people who attended the reception or came in contact with those who did, Peterson said.

All positive patients have been notified, given care instructions, and told to quarantine, the hospital said. Because of the outbreak, the hospital is closed to visitors.

The Maine CDC noted that social gatherings — such as weddings and receptions — pose an elevated risk for virus transmission.

“The possibility of COVID-19 transmission increases as the number of attendees increases, even when some attendees are indoors and others are outdoors,” it said in a statement. “This is because outdoor attendees may reasonably be expected to come indoors and interact with others, increasing the possibility of COVID-19 transmission.”

Indoor gatherings pose extra risk compared to outdoor gatherings, because of the challenges of ensuring adequate social distancing and ventilation, the Maine CDC said.

More than a dozen guests who attended a wedding June 20 in The Woodlands, Texas, about an hour outside Houston, tested positive for the coronavirus days later, The New York Times reported this month.

Over the last several months, concerns about the spread of the coronavirus at large gatherings has prompted many couples to cancel or postpone their weddings.

There have been at least 4,356 cases of the coronavirus in Maine as of Monday, with 131 deaths, according to state health data.

People who attend social gatherings should wear face coverings other than when eating or drinking, the Maine CDC said.

The investigation into the reception at the Big Moose Inn is ongoing, health officials said.

Former Sen. Jeff Flake, along with more than two-dozen former Republican lawmakers, is marking the kick-off day of the Republican National Convention by formally going to bat for Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden.

The “Republicans for Biden” group is an effort organized by the Biden campaign, which sees the slew of endorsements as a “strong rebuke” against President Trump, according to Fox News.

“These former members of Congress cited Trump’s corruption, destruction of democracy, blatant disregard for moral decency, and urgent need to get the country back on course as a reason why they support Biden,” a Biden campaign official told Fox News. “These former members of Congress are supporting Joe Biden because they know what’s at stake in this election and that Trump’s failures as president have superseded partisanship.”

Mr. Flake of Arizona, during his tenure on Capitol Hill, repeatedly clashed with the president over the years, even publishing an op-ed last year at the start of the impeachment inquiry urging Republican lawmakers to “save your souls” and abandon Mr. Trump.

The group also includes former Sens. Gordon Humphrey of New Hampshire and John Warner of Virginia.

House alumni include:

• Steve Bartlett of Texas.

• Bill Clinger of Pennsylvania.

• Tom Coleman of Missouri.

• Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania.

• Charles Djou of Hawaii.

• Mickey Edwards of Oklahoma.

• Wayne Gilchrest of Maryland.

• Jim Greenwood of Pennsylvania.

• Bob Inglis of South Carolina.

• Jim Kolbe of Arizona.

• Steve Kuykendall of California.

• Ray LaHood of Illinois.

• Jim Leach of Iowa.

• Connie Morella of Maryland.

• Mike Parker of Mississippi.

• Jack Quinn of New York.

• Claudine Schneider of Rhode Island.

• Chris Shays of Connecticut.

• Peter Smith of Vermont.

• Alan Steelman of Texas.

• Bill Whitehurst of Virginia.

• Dick Zimmer of New Jersey.

• Jim Walsh of New York.

It is part of a larger effort from the Biden campaign to cross into the president’s Republican turf. There will also be a “Vote Joe” app and other tools to try and recruit GOP voters and organize events.

At the Democratic National Convention, which wrapped up last week, several Republicans participated in and endorsed Mr. Biden, such as former Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Others, such as former Trump DHS Chief of Staff Miles Taylor, didn’t directly participate in the convention but still made news with their cross-party endorsement.

The Trump campaign shrugged off the new endorsements, saying its just more evidence Mr. Biden is a creature of the “swamp” that Mr. Trump is trying to dismantle.

“Joe Biden has been a failure in the Washington swamp for a half-century, so one should be surprised when swamp creatures gather to protect one of their own. President Trump has unprecedented support — over 95 percent — among real Republican voters and is also making strong inroads in Biden’s core Democrat constituencies, like Black Americans, Latinos, and union members. President Trump’s record of success for all Americans will carry him to victory in November,” Tim Murtaugh, Trump campaign communications director, told Fox News.

The RNC kicks off Monday night and will last through Thursday.

An Alaska state lawmaker and six others were killed when two small planes collided in midair about 150 miles southwest of Anchorage on Friday, authorities said.

Rep. Gary Knopp, 67, a member of the state House of Representatives, was piloting one of the two aircrafts without passengers, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The other plane was flown by a local pilot and carried a guide from Kansas and four people from South Carolina.

There were no survivors.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the tragic crash, which occurred just before 8:30 a.m. over the small Alaskan community of Soldotna.

“This is an unfathomable tragedy for multiple families today,” Alaska Department of Public Safety Commissioner Amanda Price said.

Besides Knopp, troopers identified the other six people killed as pilot Gregory Bell, 57, of Soldotna; guide David Rogers, 40, of Kansas; and Caleb Hulsey, 26; Heather Hulsey, 25; Mackay Hulsey, 24, and Kirstin Wright, 23, all of South Carolina.

Bell was a co-owner of High Adventure Air Charter in Soldotna, which offers bear viewing adventures, fishing and hunting trips and glacier tours, according to its website.

Troopers say six of the seven people were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The seventh person died on the way to a hospital.

The Federal Aviation Administration sent investigators to the crash site, about two miles northeast of the Soldotna airport.

The two planes involved were a single-engine de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver and a Piper PA-12, the authorities said.

State Sen. Peter Micciche said he knew Knopp, a Republican who served the Kenai Peninsula community for decades, as well as Bell, a charter-owner he’d flown with in the past.

“We live in a small, tight community here in the Central Peninsula. When I heard the horrific sounds of a plane crash this morning … I knew there was a high probability it involved someone we knew well,” Micciche said in a statement.

“We are reeling from the loss to our community.”

Gov. Mike Dunleavy ordered the U.S. and state flags to fly at half-staff until sunset Monday in honor of Knopp.

“The first lady and I wish to express our heartfelt condolences to Rep. Knopp’s family as they mourn his untimely passing,” Dunleavy said in a statement.

“Throughout his 42 years on the Kenai Peninsula, Gary became well known as an avid outdoorsman, a skilled pilot, and a dedicated public servant. His presence will no doubt be missed by those he faithfully served.”

Several staffers at Vox have taken to Twitter after journalist Matthew Yglesias signed the open letter decrying “cancel culture.”

Yglesias was one of 150 signatories including other liberal writers, professors and activists who came together to defend civil debate in the face of social media callouts that have become ubiquitous in recent years.

However, Vox critic at large Emily VanDerWerff released a letter of her own that she had written to Vox editors voicing her concerns of Yglesias’ inclusion in the anti-cancel culture letter.

“As a trans woman who very much values her position at Vox and the support the publication has given her through the emotional and physical turmoil of transition, I was deeply saddened to see Matt Yglesias’s signature on the Harper’s Weekly letter,” VanDerWerff began her letter to the editors. “Matt is, of course, entitled to his own opinion, and I know he is a more nuanced thinker than signing the letter would suggest. He has never been anything but kind to me and has often supported my work publicly, all of which I am extremely grateful for.”

“But the letter, signed as it is by several prominent anti-trans voices and containing as many dog whistles towards anti-trans positions as it does, ideally would not have been signed by anybody at Vox, much less one of the most prominent people at our publication.”

LIBERAL WRITERS, ACTIVISTS SIGN OPEN LETTER CALLING TO END ‘CANCEL CULTURE’

VanDerWeff told the editors that Yglesias’ signature on the letter “makes me feel less safe at Vox” and claimed that it makes her job “slightly more difficult” as since, as she suggests, readers will “equate my positions with his.”

“I don’t want Matt to be reprimanded or fired or even asked to submit an apology. … But I do want to make clear that those beliefs cost him nothing,” she continued. “I am used to hearing them from people who believe my own lived experiences pale in comparison to their own momentary social media discomfort. I’m sorry to find Matt among those voices.”

Another Vox staffer, Aja Romano, similarly condemned “everyone who signed” the letter though she did not name Yglesias by name.

“Today sucked. The Harper’s letter is a dehumanizing transphobic whisper network masquerading as reasoned intellectual debate,” Romano wrote. “Everyone who signed it has contributed to the real harm that its legion of transphobic signatories have brought to real trans people, especially teens.”

CONSERVATIVES DEFEND VOX JOURNALIST AFTER HE’S PUBLICALLY SHAMED BY COLLEAGUE FOR SIGNING LETTER COMBATTING ‘CANCEL CULTURE’

She followed on Wednesday, “Yesterday 3 trans Vox writers spoke against the Harper’s list, and all of us have now been directly targeted (and harassed as a result) by one of the writers on it. Just us, no other critics of the list. I want to be very clear about who benefits & who doesn’t from this ‘debate.'”

Vox senior foreign editor Jennifer Williams offered a more nuanced take of the incident.

“The Harper’s letter is revealing a deeper issue: Do we judge opinions/arguments on their merits or on who makes them? Does signing a letter mean you endorse the letter? Yes. Does it mean you also endorse the opinions of those who also choose to sign it? That’s the question here,” Williams tweeted.

AT LEAST 2 SIGNERS OF LIBERAL ‘CANCEL CULTURE’ OPEN LETTER BACK AWAY FROM IT

Williams later explained, “I thought signing a statement defending the principle of liberalism would be uncontroversial, particularly for journalists. But based on the reactions, that is not the case, hence my attempt to articulate what seems to be the core of the debate.”

Ezra Klein Vox founder and editor-at-large appeared to allude to the open letter, saying “A lot of debates that sell themselves as being about free speech are actually about power. And there’s *a lot* of power in being able to claim, and hold, the mantle of free speech defender.”

CNN MOCKED FOR REPORT ON EVERYDAY PHRASES WITH ‘RACIST CONNOATIONS’ LIKE ‘MASTER BEDROOM,’ ‘BLACKLIST,’ ‘PEANUT GALLERY’

That sparked a response from Yglesias, who asked Klein, “Should I reply to this with a concrete example or stick to my commitments to you?”

Yglesias has since deleted his own tweet.

Klein dismissed critics who suggested he would reprimand his colleague, “The idea that I would try to get Matt, literally my co-founder and oldest friend in journalism, fired over this letter is risible.”

“I’ve asked Matt, and others at Vox, to not subtweet colleagues. My mistake here is this read like a subtweet of him, when it honestly wasn’t,” Klein clarified.

NINA TURNER CALLS DEBRA MESSING ‘RACIST’ AMID ESCALATING TWITTER SPAT ABOUT BLACK VOTERS

Yglesias also attempted to “de-escalate” the exchange.

“Nobody is losing their job and I think I’ve spoken my mind very clearly on this subject,” Yglesias wrote. “I am just trying to move on to other things instead of endless rounds of twitter wrangling.”

Vox senior vice president and editor-in-chief Lauren Williams offered a forceful response to the tensions that have played out publicly.

“Proof that Twitter is not real life: In real life, I’m the EIC of Vox and the f—ing boss,” Williams stated. “I don’t tweet, so folks who don’t know or work with me seem to think a variety of other people wield that power.”

Vox Media did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment. Yglesias previously declined to comment.

ROSE MCGOWAN URGES TRUMP TO DONATE TO TARA READE FUNDRAISER ‘IN BIDEN’S NAME’

Yglesias, along with “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling, New York Times op-ed staff editor Bari Weiss, political activist Noam Chomsky, New York Times columnists David Brooks and Michelle Goldberg, CNN host Fareed Zakaria and The Atlantic writer David Frum, were attached to the piece titled “A Letter on Justice and Open Debate” that was published Tuesday in Harper’s Magazine.

“Our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial,” the letter begins. “Powerful protests for racial and social justice are leading to overdue demands for police reform, along with wider calls for greater equality and inclusion across our society, not least in higher education, journalism, philanthropy, and the arts.

“But this needed reckoning has also intensified a new set of moral attitudes and political commitments that tend to weaken our norms of open debate and toleration of differences in favor of ideological conformity. As we applaud the first development, we also raise our voices against the second,” it continued.

While the letter calls President Trump a “real threat to democracy,” it also warns that the resistance should not “harden into its own brand of dogma or coercion,” insisting that an “intolerant climate” has plagued both sides of the aisle.

CNN’S DON LEMON DEFENDS REMOVAL OF STATUES: PEOPLE WERE TAUGHT ‘PROPAGANDA’ ABOUT AMERICAN HISTORY

“The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted,” the letter explains. “While we have come to expect this on the radical right, censoriousness is also spreading more widely in our culture: an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty. We uphold the value of robust and even caustic counter-speech from all quarters. But it is now all too common to hear calls for swift and severe retribution in response to perceived transgressions of speech and thought.”

Amid a reckoning in media over accusations of racism or sexism, the letter states a need to “preserve the possibility of good-faith disagreement without dire professional consequences.”

The letter has prompted a backlash in media and activist circles on Twitter.

CHICAGO (AP) — At least 13 people, including a 7-year-old girl at a family party and a teenage boy, were killed in Chicago over the Fourth of July weekend, police said. At least 59 others were shot and wounded.

In one shooting, just before midnight Saturday, four males opened fire on a large gathering in the street in the Englewood neighborhood, police spokesman Tom Ahern said. Two males died at the scene and two more, including a 14-year-old boy, died at a hospital, Ahern said.

Four others were injured; one was in critical condition and the other three were in fair condition, Ahern said. The four attackers fled the scene. No one was arrested.

The 7-year-old girl was fatally shot in the head while standing on the sidewalk at her grandmother’s house during a Fourth of July party around 7 p.m. in the Austin neighborhood, police said.

Suspects got out of a car and began shooting, police said. No one has been arrested.

“Tonight, a 7-year-old girl in Austin joined a list of teenagers and children whose hopes and dreams were ended by the barrel of a gun,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said on Twitter late Saturday.

The mayor added: “As a city, we must wrap our arms around our youth so they understand there’s a future for them that isn’t wrapped up in gun violence.”

A 32-year-old man was injured in the shooting and was in fair condition.

The Chicago Sun-Times, citing police, said that seven of those injured in shootings were minors.

The shootings this weekend that killed young people followed tragedy the weekend before when victims included a 1-year-old boy riding in a car with his mother and a 10-year-old girl who was inside her home when a bullet fired a block away pierced a window and struck her in the head as she sat on a couch.

In response to violence that has occurred since Memorial Day weekend, police said they would have 1,200 extra officers on the streets for this holiday weekend.

Massachusetts is among only a handful of states that is on its way to containing COVID-19, according to one model.

The tool, created by Covid Act Now, a collection of epidemiologists, health and public policy experts, and technologists, shows the commonwealth is one of four states “on track” to stopping the spread of the coronavirus.

The other states are nearby, too: Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, which encompassed some of the hardest hit areas when the pandemic emerged in the United States in March.

As of Sunday, Massachusetts had logged 108,667 total probable and confirmed cases, data from the state Department of Public Health shows. The state has seen 8,060 related deaths over the course of the pandemic.

According to data collected by Covid Act Now that was last updated Friday, Massachusetts is seeing the number of active cases dropping; can likely handle a new wave of COVID-19; has sufficient testing capacity; and has conducted enough contact tracing to help contain the virus.

“Massachusetts is on track to contain COVID,” Covid Act Now says on its website. “Cases are steadily decreasing and Massachusetts’s COVID preparedness meets or exceeds international standards.”

The data shows the state’s infection rate has dropped to .75 from a peak of 2.76 in March.

“On average, each person in Massachusetts with COVID is infecting 0.75 other people,” the group says. “Because each person is infecting less than one other person, the total number of current cases in Massachusetts is shrinking.”

Meanwhile, the positive test rate is at 2.3 percent, down from an apex of 28.9 percent on April 15 in the Bay State.

“A low percentage (2.3%) of COVID tests were positive, which suggests enough widespread, aggressive testing in Massachusetts to detect most new cases,” Covid Act Now said. “Identifying and isolating new cases can help contain COVID without resorting to lockdowns.”

Massachusetts is currently in the second part of Phase 2 in its four-stage reopening plan. As of last week, restaurants are now able to offer indoor dining to customers once again, thanks to declining metrics, officials said.

“Per best available data, Massachusetts has 2,500 contact tracers,” Covid Act Now said. “With an average of 202 new daily cases, we estimate Massachusetts needs 1,010 contact tracing staff to trace all new cases in 48 hours, before too many other people are infected. This means that Massachusetts is likely able to trace 100 percent of new COVID infections in 48 hours. When this level of tracing is coupled with widely available testing, COVID can be contained without resorting to lockdowns.”

Probably not coincidentally, Massachusetts is also among the top four states in the country for regular mask usage, according to data collected by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington.

Elsewhere in New England, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island have all “controlled disease growth,” the Covid Act Now map shows.

Meanwhile, cases in Arizona, Florida, and Texas have surged recently, boosting the number of cases recorded in the country past 2.5 million on Sunday, The Washington Post reports.

The latest model from Covid Act Now says Arizona is experiencing an “active or imminent outbreak” along with Missouri and Alabama. Texas and Florida are “at risk.”

BOSTON (CBS) – Massachusetts is one of just four states on track to contain COVID-19, according to research by the non-profit Covid Act Now.

Their model looks at factors including infection rate, positive test rate, available ICU capacity, and contact tracing. Massachusetts got high marks in all of those categories, as did New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

All four states were among the earliest with high infection rates, and took early measures towards widespread closures and social distancing.

Covid Act Now concludes, “Massachusetts is on track to contain COVID. Cases are steadily decreasing and Massachusetts’s COVID preparedness meets or exceeds international standards.”

On Wednesday the state reported 172 new coronavirus cases and 48 new deaths. The positive test rate has dropped below 2 percent, which is down 94% since mid-April. Massachusetts is currently in Phase 2 of reopening, with Phase 3 starting no earlier than July 6, depending on data trends.

“We’re obviously encouraged by the continued progress we’ve made on many of those public health metrics and we’re going to continue to monitor them,” Governor Charlie Baker said Tuesday. “We do believe part of the reason we’ve been successful so far with our reopening strategy is due to the work and the efforts of everybody here in the Commonwealth… Please continue to wear face coverings, practice social distancing, and good hygiene.”

States that are considered in “active or imminent outbreak,” according to the Covid Act Now model, include Georgia, Alabama, Missouri, and Arizona. Florida and Texas are among the 18 states considered “at risk” of outbreak.

New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and Rhode Island are classified as “controlled disease growth,” along with 20 other states.
