During Blaze Lutwinksy’s first night at the ranch in 2011, she said, a medical condition caused her to vomit a bologna sandwich Boyd and Stephanie ordered her to eat.

“I ate the bologna, I threw up, immediately I was restrained in my own vomit,” Lutwinksy, who was 16 at the time, said. “He told me I better get used to following rules or this was going to be my life.”

The Householders permitted residents to call their parents once every other week for 15 minutes on speakerphone. If girls said they wanted to come home or complained about their treatment at the ranch, 17 former residents and staff members said, the Householders would end the call immediately. Letters home were also censored by Boyd, they said.

Dajah Potter, 20, said social services employees came to the ranch four times when she was there from 2016 through 2018. If they came when the girls were outside, she said, the Householders would instruct everyone to come inside and into a secluded room to keep them out of sight of the social workers.

“They were afraid we’d tell the truth, which is me being abused,” Potter said. She said Boyd once sprayed her with a hose outside in the winter because he thought she was faking being sick.

Stephanie said there are witnesses who can refute the abuse allegations, but declined to share their names.

“There are hundreds of girls who have been helped and chosen to make better decisions and become better persons in society,” Stephanie said in an email. “Unfortunately, there are a few girls who choose to continue their past acts and some are now making false accusations.”

Complaints started the year the ranch opened

Amanda Householder’s relationship with her parents deteriorated as she got older. As a teenager, she often filled in as a staff member, but she said her parents also placed her in the program as a punishment. She said the extent of her bad behavior “consisted of thinking boys were cute and listening to Green Day.” She moved in with other family members in 2009, at 17, and the next year moved to California.

For the first few years on her own, Amanda pushed back on many of the stories from former residents. She antagonized them on internet forums when they spoke negatively about Circle of Hope. But after having a child, and once she began talking directly with former residents, she began to reevaluate. She said she noticed their stories lined up. Amanda apologized for not believing them earlier, and for not intervening when she still lived at the ranch.

“I knew the restraining was bad,” said Amanda, who is now a stay-at-home mom, “but I just kick myself in the ass for not standing up against it back then. I felt guilty, I felt like it was my fault, but that’s one of the things I worked through in therapy. I had to get over that.”

In 2018, Amanda connected with Michelle Nickerson, who had been trying to report concerns about Circle of Hope to the Missouri Department of Social Services because her 16-year-old sister was at the ranch. Nickerson had been in touch with the Missouri Highway Patrol, and together, they began referring former residents to speak with the officers.

The state highway patrol gave a report on its Circle of Hope investigation to an assistant U.S. attorney, who declined last year to prosecute, according to an email from the sergeant who handled the investigation. The highway patrol refused to release a copy of the report because it’s being used in the current investigation, and the sergeant declined to comment to avoid interfering with it. A spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office also declined to comment.

Complaints about Circle of Hope date back to the year it opened.

Genevieve Dean said she called the sheriff’s department and social services in 2006 and asked them to perform a welfare check at the ranch because she worried her 15-year-old daughter, Amanda, was being abused. In a letter home, Amanda had included a secret safe word she had with her mother to signal someone was hurting her. Amanda said in an interview she was only fed quarter portions of meals, her medication was withheld and she saw Boyd smack girls. Both the sheriff’s department and social services declined to conduct a welfare check, Dean said, and she pulled her daughter out of Circle of Hope.

The following year, in 2007, Donna Maddox said she pulled her daughter, Kelsey, then 14, out of the ranch after her first visit, when she saw bruises on her that Kelsey said came from restraints. Maddox said she reported the school to several state agencies, including a consumer complaint to the Missouri Attorney General’s Office because Circle of Hope had falsely claimed to be registered with the state’s education department.

The Missouri Attorney General’s Office said it received three consumer complaints regarding Circle of Hope, and each one had been “referred to the local prosecutor or proper authority.” The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education said it received three complaints about Circle of Hope since 2008, but has no oversight of private schools. The Missouri Department of Social Services said there were four reports of misconduct at Circle of Hope since 2006 that the agency substantiated: one of neglect, one of physical abuse and neglect, and two regarding sexual abuse.

The social services department said it cannot reveal when those reports were filed, who was accused or what action, if any, was taken.

“I wouldn’t think to ask, ‘Are you providing water to the girls?'”

Michelle Stoddard, mother of former resident

Parents said it’s unacceptable that those complaints were not disclosed by the state.

“Why is that not a public record or known?” asked Brian Stoddard, a pastor in Washington state, who placed his daughter Emily at Circle of Hope in late 2017 when she was 15 and struggling with anger issues. “If I had seen that, I certainly would’ve changed my mind.”

Brian and his wife, Michelle, removed Emily in July this year after learning more about the ranch from former residents online. On the way out, Emily said, several girls gave her phone numbers for their families on slips of paper that she stuck in the sole of her shoe. “They asked me to shut the place down or get them in a safer place,” she said.

The Stoddard family went to the sheriff’s department to give a statement before leaving town, they said. Emily said that Boyd handcuffed girls frequently as a punishment, and performed what he called “swats,” which were spankings with a leather belt or paddle. The girls often did manual labor outside in 90-degree heat with no sunscreen and only one water bottle among 24 girls, Emily said.

“I wouldn’t think to ask, ‘Are you providing water to the girls?’” Michelle Stoddard said. “It’s just cruelty. Emily had a pretty bad sunburn and they sent her back out to work the next day, and now she has scars from sunburn. It’s ridiculous. It’s evil.”

Brian said before they left the ranch, Boyd requested that Emily sign a letter stating she had not been abused in any way. Brian refused, but two other parents and two former residents said they did sign similar forms, fearful Boyd wouldn’t let them leave otherwise.

Getting action on TikTok

The video Amanda Householder received from Askins does not show Boyd on screen, but she and several former residents said they instantly recognized his voice. The man is heard advising residents to attack a girl: “Knock her out.” Emily Stoddard, who was still at the ranch then, said Boyd was speaking to them in their dorm through an intercom system, and he was chastising a girl for drinking water without permission. Askins said he called child protective services when he left the ranch.

Amanda posted the video on Facebook and Twitter in March. Miranda Sullivan, a co-host of the podcast “Troubled,” about the troubled teen industry, saw it, and invited her on the show. Later, Sullivan suggested that Amanda start posting on TikTok, where others had been sharing their experiences at troubled teen programs.

“The benefit of TikTok is the kids who get activated and are amazingly useful,” Sullivan said. “With Circle of Hope, it got enough random people who were highly motivated to nag the local offices in Missouri who are not used to this much attention.”

As Amanda and former Circle of Hope residents began to post their own TikTok videos, a Cedar County sheriff’s deputy messaged her on Facebook on May 17 and said their office wanted to talk. The sheriff’s department told NBC News an investigation remains ongoing, and is being led by the state’s social services department. Gaither said his office is still waiting for them to complete their investigation and present a report to him.

“If they’re not careful, they can kill you.”

Carrie Reeves, former resident

Multiple former residents said they felt an urgency to try to shut down Circle of Hope after seeing a video of Cornelius Frederick, 16, being restrained at a youth facility in Michigan in April. Cornelius died two days later.

“That was always what I feared could happen,” said Carrie Reeves, who was a resident at Circle of Hope in 2014 when she was 14 and recalled Boyd and Stephanie restraining her with help from six other girls. “They are sitting on you, they are inflicting so much pain on you. If they’re not careful, they can kill you.”

After the state removed all the girls from Circle of Hope in August, the Householders told the Kansas City Star that they would not reopen because they didn’t want to deal with a “corrupt” sheriff’s department. This week, the ranch property appeared listed for sale on several real estate websites. The Householders have also taken down the Circle of Hope website.

Amanda said she hasn’t spoken with her parents since 2016. She said she feels relieved the ranch is closed, but she worries her parents will try to open another school, so she intends to continue pressing for criminal charges.

“I do know that what I’m doing is right,” Amanda said, “and it makes it easier because I know my parents hate me for it.”

A 25-year-old male seems to have the United States’ first case of reinfection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Researchers wonder under which circumstances reinfection is possible and what it might imply.

The resident of Reno, Nevada tested positive for infection with SARS-CoV-2 in mid-April 2020 after the onset of mild symptoms, such as a sore throat, a cough, headaches, nausea, and diarrhea.

After recovering, he twice tested negative for the virus in May. But at the end of that month, just 48 days after the first positive test, he tested positive again, this time with more severe symptoms, including a fever.

He was later admitted to a hospital after developing difficulties breathing and received supplemental oxygen.

Stay informed with live updates on the current COVID-19 outbreak and visit our coronavirus hub for more advice on prevention and treatment.

When researchers, led by the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory (NSPHL), sequenced the virus particles in each of the positive test samples, they found substantial differences.

For the virus that caused the first infection to mutate from one sequence to the other within 48 days would require a very fast mutation rate — one considerably faster than any previously observed in this virus.

The scientists therefore believe that the second case was a new infection, not a resurgence of the original infection after persisting without symptoms in the intervening period.

They also note that the male did not appear to have a suppressed immune system, tested negative for HIV, and was not taking immunosuppressant drugs.

To rule out the possibility that the two samples came from different individuals, as a result of mishandling or mislabeling, the researchers called on the services of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Forensic testing by its scientists confirmed that the specimens were indeed from the same person.

The findings have not yet been peer-reviewed or published in a journal, but the researchers have posted them as a preprint on the server SSRN.

“If reinfection is possible on such a short timeline, there may be implications for the efficacy of vaccines developed to fight the disease. It may also have implications for herd immunity,” says Mark Pandori, Ph.D., director of the NSPHL and senior author of the research.

If reinfection were widespread, it would suggest that a vaccine may not produce sufficiently long-lasting immunity against the virus. By the same token, long-term herd immunity — the point at which so many people in a population have immunity that it halts the spread of the infection — would be unattainable.

However, there is currently no evidence that reinfection is anything more than a rare occurrence. In their paper, the authors write:

“An implication of this finding is that initial exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus may not result in a level of immunity that is 100% protective for all individuals. […] It is crucial to note that the frequency of such a phenomenon is not defined by a singular case study. This may represent a rare event.”

In late August 2020, scientists in Hong Kong reported the world’s first confirmed reinfection with SARS-CoV-2.

In this case, reported in Clinical Infectious Diseases, the person experienced no symptoms of the second infection, which occurred 142 days after the first.

This provides evidence for a more optimistic scenario, in which individuals who have had the infection once are able to mount faster, more robust immune responses to a second infection. As a result, they may experience few, if any, symptoms.

In this scenario, either vaccinations or herd immunity could still potentially protect populations from severe infections.

Overall, there remains considerable uncertainty about the degree of protection provided by an initial infection.

Medical News Today recently reported on research indicating that even people who have had mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 — and who have no antibodies capable of neutralizing the virus — may be protected against future infection.

The researchers behind this study found that immune cells called memory T cells appeared to provide long-lasting defenses against the virus.

A man alleged to be tied to the far-right “boogaloo” movement, already charged with plotting to provoke violence at Las Vegas protests, has now been accused of having child pornography, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

Stephen Parshall, 35, who is also known as “Kiwi,” was charged with one count of sexual exploitation of children after investigators allegedly found 10 images of child pornography and other material on his cell phone, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada said in a statement.

Parshall was one of three people, all of whom are alleged to be members of the “boogaloo” movement, who have been charged with trying to exploit protests in Las Vegas in late May, following the death of George Floyd, with a plan to incite violence.

Requests for comment from an attorney listed as representing Parshall was not immediately returned Wednesday night.

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

The “boogaloo” movement has been described by prosecutors as a term used by extremists to signify a coming civil war and/or collapse of society.

In early June, federal and state authorities charged three men with alleged ties to the movement, including Parshall, and accused them of a conspiracy to cause violence during protests in May in Las Vegas, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

The plot was foiled with the help of an informant, officials said at the time.

It was after the arrests that investigators executed search warrants and found the images on Parshall’s cell phone, the U.S. attorney’s office said in a statement.

Parshall, of Las Vegas, is being held in jail. If convicted on the new charge of sexual exploitation of children, the minimum sentence is 15 years in prison and the maximum is 30 years, prosecutors said.

Charging documents related to the protest alleged the men planned to use explosions to spark a riot, and they eventually settled on a plan to go to a Black Lives Matter protest with Molotov cocktails. The three men were arrested before it could be carried out, the documents say.

The three had attended a previous protest in Las Vegas, carrying rifles, and Parshall allegedly encouraged protesters to become violent and became “very upset” when the event did not turn out that way, according to court documents.

Parshall has pleaded not guilty in the protest-related case. A judge in June ordered him held in custody until trial, according to online federal court records.

Federal prosecutors told a judge Monday that Ghislaine Maxwell, the British socialite charged with helping the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein feed his craving for underage girls, tried to flee apprehension from FBI agents right before they arrested her earlier this month.

Prosecutors revealed Maxwell’s effort as they argued that she is likely to flee the United States if granted bail of $5 million, or even more.

Prosecutors cited the millions of dollars that Maxwell has held in “dozens” of overseas bank accounts, her citizenship in France, and the fact that she tried to hide from FBI agents who arrested her in a $1 million New Hampshire hideaway purchased under under the name of a legal entity to hide the actual owner.

“There will be no trial for the victims if the defendant is afforded the opportunity to flee the jurisdiction, and there is every reason to think that is exactly what she will do if she is released,” prosecutors wrote in a filing in U.S. District Court in Manhattan in advance of Maxwell’s detention hearing there on Tuesday.

Prosecutors said they expect “one or more victims” will testify at the hearing.

Prosecutors said that Maxwell holds French citizenship, and if released on bail could flee to France and avoid extradition on the charges she faces in New York.

Maxwell, 58, has asked a judge to release her on a $5 million personal recognizance bond, to be secured by a half-dozen signatories and more than $3 million in property.

She has been held without bail since her arrest, and denies the charges, which are based on claims that helped Epstein recruit and groom girls as young as 14 to satisfy his sexual obsessions in the mid-1990s, and that she participated in the alleged abuse at times herself.

Maxwell’s lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In their filing Monday, prosecutors wrote, “When FBI agents arrived at the defendant’s remote property in New Hampshire on the morning of July 2, 2020, they discovered the property was barred by a locked gate.”

“After breaching the gate, the agents observed an individual who was later determined to be a private security guard. As the agents approached the front door to the main house, they announced themselves as FBI agents and directed the defendant [Maxwell] to open the door,” the filing said.

“Through a window, the agents saw the defendant ignore the direction to open the door and, instead, try to flee to another room in the house, quickly shutting a door behind her.”

The filing added, “Agents were ultimately forced to breach the door in order to enter the house to arrest the defendant, who was found in an interior room in the house.”

When FBI agents searched the house, “they also  noticed a cell phone wrapped in tin foil on top of a desk, a seemingly misguided effort to evade detection, not by the press or public, which of course would have no ability to trace her phone or intercept her communications, but by law enforcement.”

Prosecutors also wrote in their filing, “The charges against Ghislaine Maxwell arise from her essential role in sexual exploitation that caused deep and lasting harm to vulnerable victims. At the heart of this case are brave women who are victims of serious crimes that demand justice.”

And they said that Maxwell’s bail request “wholly fails to appreciate the driving force behind this case: the defendant’s victims were sexually abused as minors as a direct result of Ghislaine Maxwell’s actions, and they have carried the trauma from these events for their entire adult lives.”

“They deserve to see her brought to justice at a trial,” prosecutors wrote.

“The Government is deeply concerned that if the defendant is bailed, the victims will be denied justice in this case,” prosecutors wrote. “That outcome is unacceptable to both the victims and the Government.”

Epstein, a former friend of Presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, died from what authorities have ruled a suicide by hanging in a Manhattan federal jail, weeks after being arrested on child sex trafficking charges.

The wealthy investor Epstein, who once dated Maxwell and had paid her to manage his real-estate holdings for years, had been denied bail.

This is breaking news. Check back for updates.

Ghislaine Maxwell has hired the former prosecutor who helped bring down drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman to try to get her off child sex-trafficking charges.

Recent court filings for the 58-year-old British media heiress show that she is being repped by Christian Everdell, who spent more than a decade as an assistant US attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Everdell’s bio notes how he and his team were awarded a “True American Hero Award” by the Federal Drug Agent Foundation for “their work in the investigation and apprehension of the former head of the Sinaloa drug cartel in Mexico (‘Chapo’ Guzman).”

Former colleagues believe he may use his experience in such high-profile cases to get Maxwell to turn on others allegedly in Jeffrey Epstein’s inner circle to strike a deal.

“He will of course do what is in the best interests of his client, but no doubt he will be talking to her about the benefits of becoming a cooperating witness,” tweeted Jennifer Rodgers, who used to be his supervisor as a fellow federal Southern District of New York prosecutor.

Maxwell was busted on a six-count Manhattan federal indictment for allegedly recruiting underage girls for Epstein, who killed himself in August in a Manhattan jail cell while awaiting a fresh sex-trafficking case.

Maxwell on Monday morning was moved to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where insiders say they are taking every measure possible to make sure she cannot meet the same fate as her former lover.

Federal prosecutors have announced the arrests of more than six dozen people on charges ranging from murder to arson to looting in connection with rioting that grew out of protests over the death of George Floyd in the past five weeks.

Floyd’s death in Minneapolis Police custody on May 25 sparked protests around the country – but some demonstrations turned violent and saw looting, arson, vandalism and violence.

The arrests come from a broad range of charges. Many of them involved arson attacks.

Fox News has obtained an updated list of federal charges that have been filed around the country in connection with the unrest. It’s unclear exactly how many more investigations may be underway.

READ THE LIST OF FEDERAL CHARGES

The most serious charges are against an Air Force sergeant accused of shooting four law enforcement officers – two of them fatally.

Steven Carrillo, 32, allegedly shot and killed Federal Protective Service Officer David Patrick Underwood and injured another officer as they stood in a guardhouse on May 29. When investigators showed up at his house in Ben Lomond, Calif., on June 6, he allegedly opened fire, fatally striking Sgt. Damon Gutzwille and wounding at least one other deputy.

Robert Alvin Justus Jr., 30, is charged with aiding and abetting in connection with Underwood’s death – for allegedly acting as the getaway driver. The criminal complaint alleges that the two men met in an online group with ties to the “Boogaloo” movement, a loosely defined violent ideology.

Carrillo was allegedly arrested in possession of the gun – a privately made firearm with no manufacturer’s markings – used in both the Oakland and Ben Lomond shootings. (DOJ)

IVY LEAGUE-TRAINED LAWYER ALLEGEDLY TRIED TO PASS OUT FIREBOMBS TO PROTESTERS

About a dozen of the arrests involved Molotov cocktails — including those of two New York City lawyers, Colinford Mattis, 32, and Urooj Rahman, 31, accused of tossing one into a police vehicle.

Former prosecutors have come out in defense of Colinford Mattis, 32, and Urooj Rahman, 31, a pair of lawyers accused of firebombing a New York City police vehicle last month.

Former prosecutors have come out in defense of Colinford Mattis, 32, and Urooj Rahman, 31, a pair of lawyers accused of firebombing a New York City police vehicle last month.

In Las Vegas, Stephen T. Parshall, 35; Andrew Lynam, 23; and William L. Loomis, 40, allegedly planned to firebomb U.S. government buildings on May 30 before they were arrested in possession of Molotov cocktails. Investigators said they also had ties to the “Boogaloo” ideology.

Ivan Jacob Zecher, a 27-year-old convicted felon from Jacksonville, Fla., was arrested for unlawful assembly for allegedly taking part in a crowd that blocked traffic and hurled water bottles and rocks at local police. Then investigators said they found Molotov cocktail in his backpack – which counts as a firearm under federal law. Previously convicted felons are not allowed to possess firearms.

Arson attacks in cities around the country have often targeted police vehicles.

Five men in their early 20s from Gainseville, Ga., allegedly set fire to a police car outside an officer’s personal residence on June 2.

Margaret Aislinn Channon, a 25-year-old from Tacoma, Wash., allegedly torched five unmarked police vehicles in Seattle. She was identified by distinguishable tattoos spotted on surveillance video, other images at the scene and her own social media photos, according to the DOJ.

Federal investigators said they tracked down alleged arsonist Lore-Elisabeth Blumenthal, 33, after matching her T-shirt to one sold at an online Etsy store. She is accused of burning two parked Philadelphia police vehicles near City Hall on May 30.

Branden Michael Wolfe, 23, allegedly lit a fire at the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct building on May 28 – after officers withdrew and rioters overran the station. When investigators arrested him a few days later, they said he was wearing stolen police equipment.

Richard Rubalcava, of Raleigh, N.C., allegedly torched and looted two businesses during riots on May 30. The DOJ said surveillance video shows him reentering a Dollar General store multiple times and leaving with bags full of merchandise before lighting a fire inside. He also allegedly stole a cash register from a restaurant and left a burning towel inside before leaving.

On June 1, a group of people broke into a gun store in Vacaville, Calif., and stole about 70 firearms. Investigators made five arrests and said they recovered 13 handguns.

Peter Fratus, a 39-year-old from Massachusetts, faces charges of transmitting threatening communications across state lines for allegedly sending racist emails to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw.

“While the First Amendment gives us the right to express our own opinions, violent physical threats are certainly not protected speech,” said Michael J. Driscoll, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division. “When someone threatens the life of another person, it’s a clear red flag and we have to take their despicable words at face value.”

Also in Philadelphia, 24-year-old David Elmakayes is accused of blowing up an ATM and possessing an illegal firearm. The city saw dozens of ATM bombings during the protests as looters attempted to break inside to their safes, which killed at least one man. Police in the city have filed local charges against at least one man, Talib Crump, for allegedly selling homemade dynamite.

And seven people were arrested in Louisville, Ky., on riot-related charges that included allegedly looting drugs out of a pharmacy — leaving patients unable to fill their prescriptions.

Protesters have also vandalized, defaced and destroyed statues that they find problematic around the country, particularly Confederate monuments, but also depictions of the explorer Christopher Columbus and former U.S. presidents — including George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant.

An Air Force sergeant who was arrested in the fatal ambush of a Santa Cruz County deputy was charged Tuesday in connection with the killing of a federal security officer during George Floyd protests in Oakland last month, authorities said.

Staff Sgt. Steven Carrillo, 32, was charged with murder and attempted murder in the killing of federal officer Dave Patrick Underwood, 53.

Underwood was one of two officers who were shot May 29 while guarding the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building. The other officer was critically wounded in the drive-by attack. Both were members of Homeland Security’s Federal Protective Service.

Authorities said Carrillo and a second man traveled to Oakland with the intent to kill police and believed the large demonstrations spurred by the death of Floyd in Minneapolis — which they were not a part of — would help them get away it.

“They came to Oakland to kill cops,” said John Bennett, special agent in charge of the San Francisco division of the FBI.

Steven Carrillo.Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office

Carrillo’s alleged accomplice, Robert Justus, was also charged with murder and attempted murder.

The killing of Underwood set off a massive manhunt. Eight days later, officers showed up at Carrillo’s home after they discovered an abandoned white van that belonged to him and contained ammunition, firearms and bomb-making equipment, authorities said.

Carrillo ambushed the officers, killing Santa Cruz County Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller and critically injuring another deputy, according to authorities.

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

Carrillo suffered a gunshot wound but managed to flee the scene on feet, authorities said. He carjacked a vehicle but was ultimately taken into custody, bleeding from his hip, authorities said.

He was charged with multiple offenses, including murder and attempted murder, in the attack on the Santa Cruz County officers.

Federal authorities said an AR-15 was recovered at the scene where Carrillo was arrested and linked to the Oakland federal courthouse shooting. The assault rifle used by Carrillo was privately made, had no markings and had a silencer attached to the barrel of the weapon, authorities said.

Investigators found inside Carrillo’s vehicle a ballistic vest with a patch on it that featured an igloo and a Hawaiian-style print — symbols associated with the far-right extremist “Boogaloo” movement, according to his federal complaint.

Carrillo, prior to his arrest, used his own blood to scrawl the word “boog” and “I became unreasonable” on the hood of the vehicle he carjacked, the complaint says. Both phrases are also associated with “Boogaloo,” a term used by extremists to reference a violent uprising or impending civil war in the U.S., the complaint says.

Carrillo’s lawyer Jeffrey Stotter said his client was a father of two who was “left deeply shaken” by his wife’s death by suicide in 2018.

“At this point, all of these allegations are just that, accusations and allegations,” Stotter said.

The complaint alleges Carrillo met Justus on Facebook, and that Justus gave him a ride to the rally in a white van.

According to the complaint, Carrillo wrote in a Facebook group on May 28 that the unrest is “on our coast now, this needs to be nationwide” and that “it’s a great opportunity to target the specialty soup bois.”

In Boogaloo groups on Facebook and Reddit, “soup bois” is shorthand for government agencies that are abbreviated in acronyms like “alphabet soup” such as the FBI and ATF.

Online Boogaloo communities frequently post memes about targeting federal agencies in advance of another civil war.

In response to Carrillo’s message, the complaint alleges Justus wrote “let’s boogie,” another reference to the Boogaloo movement.

In Boogaloo Facebook groups, the complaint says, Carrillo was even more explicit about taking advantage of protests to stir up unrest and violence against police.

“Go to the riots and support our own cause. Show them the real targets. Use their anger to fuel our fire. Think outside the box. We have mobs of angry people to use to our advantage,” Carillo wrote in one Facebook group, according to the complaint.

Carrillo believed that the Boogaloo, or second civil war, was “kicking off now and if its not kicking off in your hood then start it,” according to the complaint.

Boogaloo groups are actively allowed on Facebook. Earlier this month, Facebook told NBC News it would stop recommending the groups in its recommendations algorithm, but the groups would be allowed on the site.

On Thursday, I reported on the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) in Seattle and how it could serve as a harbinger of America’s future if politicians don’t start working together. The so-called “warlord” of CHAZ, Raz Simone, has been demonized as the nefarious leader of a separatist movement that could quickly devolve into violence and mayhem. Simone has been called a terrorist, monarch and Osama Bin Raza by right-wing pundits.

On Friday evening, I found myself on the phone with the infamous man who’s been both applauded by some and villainized by others.

In a long, wide-ranging interview, Simone shared his views on what’s really going on in CHAZ. He offered thoughtful suggestions for initiating proactive and positive changes, particularly as it relates to the push to defund or abolish the police. He came across as a gregarious, open-minded, intelligent, enlightened, street-smart and business-minded person.

Simone is passionate about achieving racial equality and justice. In addition to his involvement with the protests calling for the end of police brutality (in response to the killing of George Floyd), Simone is a rap artist and owns million-dollar properties in Seattle, drives a Tesla and has plans to both enact change and build profitable and scalable business enterprises to help his community and society.

If you’re unfamiliar with the backstory, here’s what happened. After tensions escalated between peaceful protesters and police, Seattle city officials ordered the police force to stand down and evacuate the Capitol Hill section of the city. The protesters then took over a small swath of about six blocks in downtown Seattle, renaming it the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (there’s an internal debate underway over changing the name).

It was reported, depending upon the ideology behind the media coverage, as a new peaceful vision of how communities could be run. It was seen as a self-sustaining commune, police-free zone and a big “F*** you” to all of the racists and haters in America. Initially, most protesters demanded that the police be abolished and Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan be fired.

The New York Times had a flattering perspective reporting, “What has emerged is an experiment in life without the police—part street festival, part commune. Hundreds have gathered to hear speeches, poetry and music. On Tuesday night, dozens of people sat in the middle of an intersection to watch 13th, the Ava DuVernay film about the criminal justice system’s impact on African-Americans. On Wednesday, children made chalk drawings in the middle of the street.”

Others saw a deserted and defaced police station and a banner hung with a hastily scrawled message saying, “This space is now property of the Seattle people.” Capitol Hill is an urban residential district in Seattle that proudly boasts a vibrant nightlife, entertainment and is seen as the epicenter of the city’s LGBTQ and counterculture communities. It now looked to outsiders as if it suddenly turned it into a dark and frightening “no-go” zone.

Armed guards patrolled the area, keeping the peace and vigilantly watching out for intruders bent on causing trouble. The media-provided moniker of “Warlord Raz” added to the fear factor. He was accused of chasing out reporters and possibly assaulting a citizen journalist. Omari Salisbury, the journalist in question, was later seen together in a video with Simone stating that they may not always see eye to eye, but they share the same goals and want to work together to achieve them.

Simone said that the barriers and displays of weaponry are necessary—in light of the circumstances. He contends, “A man just ran over protestors, hopped out and shot one of our young black men. This is the fifth time I’ve witnessed this. Today, I will be buying barricades to protect us protestors 24/7 from threats of this nature.” It has been reported that the armed driver is the brother of a cop.

President Donald Trump, incensed over the situation, tweeted, “Domestic Terrorists have taken over Seattle, run by Radical Left Democrats, of course. LAW & ORDER!” He also tweeted, “Radical Left Governor @JayInslee and the Mayor of Seattle are being taunted and played at a level that our great Country has never seen before. Take back your city NOW. If you don’t do it, I will. This is not a game. These ugly Anarchists must be stopped IMMEDIATELY. MOVE FAST!”  Mayor Durkan responded in a tweet to Trump, “Make us all safe. Go back to your bunker.”

Simone emphatically asserts that he doesn’t want to abolish the police. From a practical standpoint, he recognizes the need to offer safety and security for American citizens. He’s calling for the “repurposing” of the police function. This will entail creating a new infrastructure that truly serves the people and the dismantling of a heavily weaponized, militaristic arm of the government that harms, oppresses and terrorizes American citizens. He says that we need to develop appropriate systems, policies and procedures. Technology can be utilized effectively in these efforts of rebuilding a re-imagined security and safety system.

One idea is privatization. Simone advocates for community-based and supported self-policing. This could be jump-started, in part, by a GoFundMe effort. His objective is to rethink and restructure the police in a modern way. New recruits would have to be 25 years and older before they could even apply. They’d be trained for longer periods of time. In Seattle, the Basic Law Enforcement Academy is only about 720 hours. Cadets would be given stringent tests to determine their levels of empathy and if they have entrenched biases. This alternative community-oriented system could be scaled up from the CHAZ to the suburbs of Connecticut, rural areas in the Midwest and wealthy enclaves of the Upper East Side of New York City.

Simone emphatically denies being the leader of the CHAZ movement. As people protested and the police left its precinct, a vacuum developed. Simone, being charismatic, articulate, well-known in his community and comfortable speaking in public as a rapper, he filled the void.

According to Simone, there wasn’t an overarching goal to build a commune or separate country within America. It was organic, as things developed on its own. We witnessed an unintended experiment of self-government, self-policing and self-sustainability. He proudly points to movie screens that were set up and artwork created, including a large “Black Lives Matter” mural painted on the street in bold, bright colors. People happily played dodgeball in the early evening, held dance parties and acted “more like a block-party atmosphere” than an “armed takeover,” according to Mayor Durkan. Small plots of land were allocated to farming.

This could be viewed as a model for other places. He said that there is not one clear vision of where this will lead, as the protestors have differing ideologies of how things should be. Simone views his role as offering the platform for everyone to be heard. He sees himself as echoing and amplifying the voices of the protestors who wouldn’t ordinarily be heard. He’s a self-described “peacemaker, mediator and diffuser of fights.”

Simone wants to stand up for what’s right and demands accountability from the police, as well as city, state and federal elected and non-elected officials. Like many people, he’s appalled by the brutal and militaristic tactics used by the police, as they abuse tear gas, flash bombs, gestapo tactics, rubber bullets and other measures with such impunity.

Simone loves America and is devoted to positivity and unity. He’s committed to the country and seeks to make it an even better place and is not a proponent of the “burn it all down” contingent. He’s been in constant communications with the mayor, police and fire chiefs and other members of the establishment. It’s important to him and the city officials to ensure that life goes on peacefully. We’ve already seen how quickly violence, mayhem, looting and rioting can occur.

There’s also an enlightened self-serving motive. Although he denies being the leader, the conservative media narrative has chosen Simone as the de facto “warlord.” Should any issues ensue between the people and the police or military, he would naturally be a target and find himself in serious physical danger.

Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best said in a video message to her officers on Thursday that it was not her decision to leave the precinct and it was due to city officials. Mayor Durkan, in an interview with CNN, said that she thought it’d be best for the police to leave, so as to de-escalate the tension. Best raised concerns for the safety of people living in this section. She says police response time has tripled. “Rapes, robberies and all sorts of violent acts have been occurring in the area and we’re not able to get to.”

The CHAZ isn’t perfect. Seattle Police Assistant Chief Deanna Nollette has claimed that she’s heard of “anecdotal” reports of extortion levied against local business owners. Videos show random altercations, fights, harassment, desecration of businesses, some weirdness, thinly veiled threats associated with raising money and the possibility of violence and destruction perpetrated if their demands are not met.

Simone claims that everything is under control. He denies that business owners are being extorted, but as a rationalist, recognizes that with a large number of people with differing objectives, that it’s not impossible for that to happen. Simone is a proponent of the Second Amendment and carries a weapon, as do others.

Washington State Governor Jay Inslee initially claimed he was unaware of what’s happening when asked about CHAZ in a press conference. Inslee later tweeted, “I spoke with @MayorJenny and her team about the situation on Capitol Hill. Although unpermitted, and we should remember we are still in a pandemic, the area is largely peaceful. Peaceful protests are fundamentally American, and I am hopeful there will be a peaceful resolution.”

The “peaceful resolution” statement has an ominous ring to it. Simone is acutely aware of his situation. As right-leaning media portrays him as a gun-toting terrorist, there’s the risk of police or military intervention. They could send in heavily armed forces to retake the six-blocks involved with the perceived insurrection.

This could end up in a Waco-like disaster of violence. There’s also been reports of various groups, including biker gangs, riding to “Antifistan” to take care of business and set them straight. As CHAZ hosts a loosely connected group of people with their own agendas and goals, there could also be infighting from within. It’s a precarious situation that could quickly blow up and end badly.

It’s imperative that all of the participants put aside their preconceived notions and commence real open and honest conversations. If the politicians continue with their rancor, there will only be more hate, anger, animosity and violence and nothing will ever change. Only by listening, learning and collaborating can we move forward in a productive manner and make things better for all Americans.
