]]>EXCLUSIVE: Two federally-run Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals during the Obama administration used the term “Kung Flu” in official materials, along with imagery of a monkey in a karate suit and a ninja wearing a flu mask, Fox News has learned.
President Trump’s use of the term “Kung Flu” to refer to the coronavirus has drawn accusations of racism and insensitivity, but the use of the term under the Obama administration has gone unreported.
In 2015, the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System’s official website urged patients to “Become a Kung Flu Fighter! Get Your Flu Shot!” The website has been taken down, but a copy of it was retained by an Internet archiving website.
The text was accompanied by an image of a ninja wearing a mask in an airborne, flying-kick posture.
The VA further urged visitors to “Click here to print Kung Flu Fighter poster!”
Also in 2015, the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center sent a mailer to patients reading: “Kung Flu — Knock it out before it knocks YOU out!”
The text is accompanied by a cartoon monkey in a karate outfit apparently kicking a virus molecule senseless.
A copy of that mailer remains online.
It was unclear why the hospitals were referencing “Kung Flu,” other than to make an attempt at humor. Unlike now, the term was not used during a pandemic when an outbreak began in China, as it did with COVID-19.
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany sparred with reporters Monday about the term “Kung Flu,” declaring that the moniker was meant to link COVID-19 to its place of origin.

Trump referred to the coronavirus as “Kung Flu” on Saturday night during his campaign rally in Tulsa, Okla. McEnany was asked about the phrase multiple times during the briefing Monday.
CBS reporter Weijia Jiang first brought up the topic, asking why the president uses “racist” terms such as “Kung Flu.”

“The president doesn’t, what the president does do is point to the fact that the origin of the virus is China. It’s a fair thing to point out, as China tries to ridiculously rewrite history… ridiculously blame the coronavirus on American soldiers,” McEnany said. “This is what China’s trying to do and what President Trump is saying, ‘No, China, I will label this virus for its place of origin.’”
Jiang pushed back, repeating she feels the phrase is “racist,” but McEnany again responded that Trump is simply “linking it to its place of origin” and dismissed concerns that the phrase will lead to discrimination against Asian Americans.
“The president has said very clearly, ‘It’s important that we totally protect our Asian community in the U.S. and all around the world. They’re amazing people and the spreading of the virus is not their fault in any way, shape or form,’” McEnany said.
McEnany then said the mainstream media condemned Trump for calling COVID-19 the “Wuhan Virus” and “Chinese Virus” despite the press using those terms themselves.
“It’s a separate category, Kayleigh. ’Kung Flu’ is extremely offensive to many people in the Asian American community,” Jiang said.
“To be clear, I think the media is trying to play games with the terminology of this virus… the focus should be on the fact that China let this out of their country,” McEnany said, adding that CNN called it the “Wuhan Virus” in January.

CNN’s Kaitlan Collins then chimed in, saying the “media has never called it the ‘Kung Flu.’”
“Calling it the Chinese coronavirus and ‘Kung Flu’ are very different things,” Collins said.
“The media, and your network specifically, have repeatedly used the term ‘China Virus’ and ‘Wuhan Virus,’ and then gone on to deride the president,” McEnany hit back.

Collins repeated that the media hasn’t used the term “Kung Flu,” but McEnany attempted to move on to the next reporter.
McEnany then answered questions on a variety of other topics, but reporters continued asking about the “Kung Flu” and she continued responding by noting that coronavirus originated in China.

]]>Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti received a letter from the Trump administration on Friday warning extended or “heavy-handed” stay-at-home orders may be illegal.
“Reports of your recent public statements indicate that you suggested the possibility of long-term lockdown of the residents in the City and County of Los Angeles, regardless of the legal justification for such restrictions,” reads the letter addressed to Garcetti and Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer. “Any such approach may be both arbitrary and unlawful.”
The Los Angeles Times reported that the letter followed confusion over Ferrer saying earlier this month that stay-at-home orders will “with all certainty” be extended for the next few months, prompting many to believe strict measures would remain in place throughout the summer.
It was later clarified that while stay-at-home orders in Los Angeles County have been extended and officials will recommend people avoid unnecessary outings, some restrictions will be loosened in coming weeks. Recent changes include the reopening of beaches for active recreation as well as golf courses and hiking trails. Stores are also allowed to reopen for curbside pickup.
The letter from the Trump administration comes a day after Garcetti swiped at Trump for not wearing a face mask at many of his public outings.
Asked during an interview with MSNBC about Trump’s decision against wearing a face mask, Garcetti responded: “Simply put, I say real men wear face masks.”
Stay-at-home measures have helped prevent Los Angeles from seeing hospitals overwhelmed by coronavirus cases. Los Angeles is still recommending wearing face masks outside and social distancing as it begins to reopen.
Though it’s less impacted than other major cities, Los Angeles has begun investing in a contact tracing program to help in reopening efforts.
“Look, simply put, we’ve got millions of people out of work and hundreds of thousands of jobs we need filled,” Garcetti said of the program. “And the quicker we can get them doing contact tracing, helping individuals and businesses with the benefits from the federal government, maybe even doing things like cleaning up cities and investing in infrastructure, the quicker we can get this economy back going. So for a few billion dollars we could unleash $1 trillion of economic activity sooner.”

]]>Modeling from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) projecting the spread of the novel coronavirus predicts that nationwide daily new cases of COVID-19 and deaths caused by the virus will continue to surge into June, despite the president urging for the economy to reopen.
A report compiled by Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) using data from the CDC, which was first reported by The New York Times, showed that daily deaths from COVID-19 will nearly double from the current daily level of about 1,750 to about 3,000 by June 1. Additionally, the number of new daily confirmed infections from the novel virus will surge by 700 percent by the end of May, growing from the current level of about 25,000 to about 200,000.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has urged the country to begin reopening the economy. Local leaders across the nation have begun allowing some businesses shuttered by stay-at-home orders to reopen, while some states have allowed their social distancing measures to expire.

“There remains a large number of counties whose burden continues to grow or are in an elevated incidence plateau, including in the Great Lakes region, parts of the Southeast, Northeast, and around southern California,” the CDC/FEMA report said in a note included next to a map of the U.S., which highlighted hotspot areas for the novel coronavirus.
In a statement emailed to Newsweek, White House Deputy Press Secretary Judd Deere said that the Coronavirus Task Force had not reviewed the report.
“This is not a White House document nor has it been presented to the Coronavirus Task Force or gone through interagency vetting. This data is not reflective of any of the modeling done by the task force or data that the task force has analyzed. The President’s phased guidelines to open up America again are a scientific driven approach that the top health and infectious disease experts in the federal government agreed with,” Deere said. “The health of the American people remains President Trump’s top priority and that will continue as we monitor the efforts by states to ease restrictions.”
Health experts have urged caution as states have begun allowing some business to reopen and the federal government has allowed its stringent social distancing guidelines to expire. The White House has said governors are responsible for the lockdown measures within their states, suggesting that the federal guidelines were no longer necessary.
Although Trump has pushed for the economy to reopen, declaring “we’re opening our country again,” other government health officials have expressed concern that the virus will continue to spread.
“It’s going to take a long time for us to really wrestle this one down,” Anne Schuchat, the deputy director of the CDC, said during a brief online conversation with a medical journal last week, Politico reported. “The extent to which this [disease] is challenging, it’s hard to overstate.”
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also noted in an interview with PBS last week that there was “no doubt” that the number of new cases of COVID-19 would increase as the country moved to reopen. However, he asserted that if adequate testing, contact tracing and other measures were in place, the number could be kept to a minimum.
“As you try and relax mitigation, if we have the capability of identifying, isolating and contact tracing in a highly effective and efficient way, then the numbers will stay low,” he said.
Meanwhile, polling has shown that most Americans are concerned about returning to normal life too soon. A poll conducted from April 21 to 26 by NPR, PBS and Marist showed that 65 percent of respondents believed it was a “bad idea” for people to return to work without adequate testing. Additionally, 80 percent said it was unwise to allow restaurants to reopen for dine-in service.
As of Monday morning, the U.S. had more than 1.16 million confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, according to a tracker by Johns Hopkins University. Of those infected, more than 180,000 have already recovered while nearly 68,000 have died.
