]]>Lawmakers in Washington, most of them Republicans, called Friday for the Justice Department to take legal action against Netflix for streaming the highly controversial film “Cuties” — claiming the comedy-drama sexualizes young children and “serves as fodder for pedophiles.”
The critics included U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and U.S. Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind. — as well as U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii.
“There’s no excuse for the sexualization of children, and Netflix’s decision to promote the film ‘Cuties’ is disgusting at best and a serious crime at worst,” Cotton told the Daily Caller. “I urge the Department of Justice to take action against Netflix for their role in pushing explicit depictions of children into American homes.”

The film, centered on an 11-year-old Senegalese immigrant living in Paris, is the debut work of French director Maïmouna Doucouré. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah last year and earned Doucouré a best directing award.

In the film, the main character, Amy, ends up joining a clique of girls who call themselves the “Cuties” – and perform highly provocative and eroticized dance numbers while scantily clad – as a way of rebelling against her conservative Muslim parents.
Banks told the Daily Caller he was disturbed by the film as a parent.

“As a father of young daughters, I find it sickening. Not only is this movie fodder for pedophiles, it encourages very young girls to defy their parents’ wishes and share pornographic images of themselves with strangers. Our culture has come a long way in recent years, recognizing the power of television, movies and magazines to affect young girls,” he said. “The lessons taught in this film are not ones I want my daughters learning. The DOJ should be readying charges against Netflix for distribution of child pornography.”

‘CUTIES’ MOVIE SPAWNS TRENDING HASHTAG #CANCELNETFLIX
Netflix has defended the film as actually trying to speak against the over-sexualization of children in society and has urged critics to watch the movie to understand its perspective, but there is no doubt that some scenes in the film involving the girls are sexualized.
“”Cuties’ is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,” a spokesperson said Thursday. “It’s an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up – and we’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie.”
Netflix’s decision to show the film has also garnered an online petition and a trending Twitter hashtag to #CancelNetflix
Other prominent lawmakers have also spoken out against it.
U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., tweeted Friday that Netflix “should explain to the public why it is distributing a film, ‘Cuties,’ that appears to sexually exploit children and endanger child welfare.”
U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, wrote on Twitter the film would “whet the appetite of pedophiles & help fuel the child sex trafficking trade.”
Still, some have dismissed the criticism as a misunderstanding based on the film’s most controversial segments.
Emily Nussbaum, a writer for The New Yorker, said critics have taken the film “out of context,” which is a “drag, since the film critiques just what its haters think it supports.”
Doucouré, for whom the film is partly a self-reflection as she’s the daughter of Senegalese immigrants in France, said she’s now receiving death threats over the film, according to Deadline.

“I received numerous attacks on my character from people who had not seen the film, who thought I was actually making a film that was apologetic about hyper-sexualization of children,” she said.

]]>President Trump made a class-based appeal Wednesday to voters in the suburbs, where he trails presumptive Democratic nominee Joseph R. Biden, saying he’s ensured they won’t be “bothered” by low-income housing.
“I am happy to inform all of the people living their Suburban Lifestyle Dream that you will no longer be bothered or financially hurt by having low income housing built in your neighborhood,” the president tweeted. “Your housing prices will go up based on the market, and crime will go down. I have rescinded the Obama-Biden AFFH Rule. Enjoy!”
Mr. Trump, who trails Mr. Biden by 11 points among suburban voters in the latest Fox News poll, this week took action to repeal the Obama administration’s Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule. The 2015 regulation was an update to the 1968 Fair Housing Act, and sought to enforce desegregation in housing.
Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson said the Obama rule was “complicated, costly and ineffective.”
“We found it to be unworkable and ultimately a waste of time for localities to comply with, too often resulting in funds being steered away from communities that need them most,” Mr. Carson said in a statement.

]]>It took the killing of George Floyd to get Jane Ullman to finally pay attention to what the police were up to in America. But it was the sinister sight of federal agents in camouflage snatching demonstrators off the streets of Portland that got her out to protest.
The chief financial officer for tech startups in Oregon’s biggest city joined hundreds of other mothers dressed in yellow in a “Wall of Moms”, turning out each evening to stand as a human barricade between protesters and agents dispatched by Donald Trump to aggressively break up Black Lives Matter demonstrations.
Ullman, a mother of two, said it was her first demonstration in support of racial justice.
“As an upper-middle-class white woman in the whitest city in America, I couldn’t stand by any longer,” she said. “I’ve been doing a lot of self-educating since George Floyd. Reading and learning. The feds’ part in it pushed me over the top. I wanted to take action. But it was the ‘Wall of Moms’ that brought me out.”
Ullman was not alone. What began as a small symbolic act of defiance on Saturday grew into the principal demonstration two nights later, as thousands packed the streets and squares outside the county jail and federal courthouse in downtown Portland for one of the largest protests to date.
At the heart of it were hundreds of women dressed in yellow and singing “Hands up, please don’t shoot me” – evidence that not only has Trump’s dispatch of federal agents failed to stop the protests, it has reinvigorated them.
Video of unidentifiable federal officers, looking more like soldiers of an occupying army than police, beating and snatching protesters off the streets angered a 35-year-old mother of two, Bev Barnum, who posted a Facebook message on Saturday morning.
“As most of you have read and seen on the news,” she wrote, “protesters are being hurt (without cause). And as of late, protesters are being stripped of their rights by being placed in unmarked cars by unidentifiable law enforcement. We moms are often underestimated. But we’re stronger than we’re given credit for.”
Barnum called for a group to dress in white and form a protective line between police and demonstrators who Trump painted as anarchists.
“Let’s make it clear that we will protect protesters without the use of violence,” she said. “We will shine a light of the unjust narrative being thrown around.”
The first group of nearly 40 mothers lined up that evening, chanting: “Feds stay clear, moms are here.”
Their line offered little protection once the federal officers started firing teargas and flash-bangs and charging with batons. But they were back in larger numbers the following evening, this time wearing yellow and carrying sunflowers. By Monday, the Wall of Moms had become the main event as Ullman and hundreds of others decided this was the moment to make a stand.
Jennifer Bradly, a grandmother, hesitated to join the protests earlier.
“I’m not crazy about the feds sweeping people off the streets,” said the post office mailwoman wearing a “Union Proud” badge. “I’ve been active with Black Lives Matter but these demonstrations looked too violent to me until I saw the Wall of Moms. It’s a big group of like-minded people.”
Bradly said many of the women were brought out by Trump’s intervention but it was important to keep the focus on the demand for reform of the police, including in Portland where the force is under court oversight because of officers shooting homeless people.
“It feels like people are not going to give up. This time feels different,” she said, reflecting on how little policing changed after other killings before George Floyd. He died in Minneapolis on 25 May, after an office knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
The Portland protests have occurred every night in the nearly two months since. After the initial surge, support waned, a few hundred turning out night after night. But outrage at Trump deploying federal agents, many untrained in policing, to end what he called anarchy, has reignited the protests.
Portland’s mayor and Oregon’s governor denounced the deployment of officers from the Department of Homeland Security, the US Marshals Service and the border patrol. The state attorney general is suing those agencies for “overstepping their powers and injuring or threatening peaceful protesters on the streets of downtown Portland”.
“Trump’s troops”, as some protesters call them, have greater leeway than local officers. A court barred the city police from using teargas but the federal officers are not bound by the order.
For Margaret van Vliet, a former Oregon state housing director who joined the Wall of Moms, it was all too much.
“I was at home thinking that I have to lift my voice,” she said. “So here I am.”

]]>Voters in California will decide this November whether to restore affirmative action in college admissions and government contracting.
The proposal would reverse a 1996 constitutional amendment approved by 55 percent of voters that banned “preferential treatment” based on “race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.”
Wednesday’s 30-10 vote in the state legislature gave the measure the two-thirds majority required to put it on the ballot followed hours of emotional and personal debate.

“I know about discrimination. I live it every day,” Democratic state Sen. Steven Bradford, who is black, said to his colleagues, according to the Sacramento Bee. “We live it in this building. Quit lying to yourselves and saying race is not a factor. … The bedrock of who we are in this country is based on race.”

Six years ago, an effort to get affirmative action on the ballot died in the Senate after Asian-American advocacy groups argued it would unfairly disadvantage Asian-American students who make up high percentages at some colleges, The Los Angeles Times reported. The same groups are expected to oppose the measure again, the Bee reported.
“This bill is rescinding very simple but powerful language from our Constitution that makes it illegal to discriminate against someone for ethnicity or race in the course of public employment,” Republican state Sen. Ling Ling Chang, who is of Taiwanese descent, said. “The answer to discrimination is not more discrimination.”
Only one Republican, Scott Wilk, voted in favor of the measure.
Senate Republican Leader Shannon Grove said Democrats need to support black and Hispanic efforts regarding charter schools.
“We need to start at the level of K-12 and giving parents the opportunity to be able to choose the best school for their children and not make them stay in the ZIP Codes in which they are living in,” she said, according to the Times.
Democratic state Sen. Susan Rubio, who is Latina, said when she went to her college counselor in high school she was told “that Latinas, that I wasn’t college material.”

Seven others states — Washington, Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Arizona, New Hampshire and Oklahoma – have banned affirmative action.

]]>Priorities USA Action, a leading Democratic super PAC, on Tuesday announced plans to expand its ongoing TV ad campaign against President Trump into Arizona, where recent polling has indicated Mr. Trump is vulnerable.
The group said Mr. Trump is increasingly nervous about his chances in Arizona, which could be vital for the president’s chances at reelection.
A new TV ad from the group that hits the president for his response to the coronavirus crisis and the ongoing protests in the wake of George Floyd’s killing in Minneapolis is set to run on TV in Arizona, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan.
“Think of the damage that’s been done, and imagine what four more years might look like,” a narrator says in the ad over images of police confronting protesters and Mr. Trump’s holding up a Bible outside of St. John’s Episcopal Church last week.
The group had also announced in March it was briefly expanding a previous TV buy into Arizona.
The March announcement came after the Trump campaign had petitioned some TV stations in other battleground states to stop airing an ad from the group, saying it mischaracterized Mr. Trump’s comments on the coronavirus pandemic.
Outside of former President Bill Clinton’s carrying the state in 1996, it’s been close to 70 years since Arizona has broken for a Democratic presidential candidate.
But some recent polling has shown presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden leading Mr. Trump in the state. Mr. Biden leads Mr. Trump by about 3 points, according to the latest Real Clear Politics average of public polling.
In 2018, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, Arizona Democrat, also became the first Democrat in 30 years to win a U.S. Senate seat in the state.
Ms. Sinema defeated GOP Sen. Martha McSally, who was later appointed to fill the seat of the late Sen. John McCain and who has been lagging behind Democrat Mark Kelly in public polling on her race this year.

]]>Discussions continue over Joe Biden’s quest for the White House and his promise to include a woman on the ticket — even as the Democratic presidential hopeful battles accusations of sexual misconduct.
Strategists, meanwhile, are concentrating on his future running mate. A new political action committee simply titled “Committee to Draft Michelle Obama for VP” was launched this week, set to rev up grassroots support for the former first lady and generate much media coverage.
“With a historic battle to reclaim the soul of America looming this November and the peril caused by the coronavirus pandemic, it remains in the best interest of the Democratic Party to nominate a vice-presidential candidate who has the trust of the American people, a vision to lead our nation forward and empathy for the challenges faced by all Americans,” the New York-based organizers advises in an introductory statement.
They are not holding back.
“Michelle Obama’s honorable reputation will stand in stark contrast to the rampant corruption and immorality that pervades President Trump’s administration. If elected, she would usher in a much-needed sense of virtue in Washington, which is gracefully exemplified in her quotation, ‘When they go low, we go high’.”
Mrs. Obama, however, is now a best selling author, a Netflix producer and a high-profile public speaker. Whether she would be interested in the role remains to be seen. Some say there is risk for Mr. Biden as well.
“The downfall for Biden in this potential scenario would be the continue reality of being outshined by his vice president. Michelle Obama is arguably bigger than Joe Biden in terms of her name recognition and global popularity. Biden would be playing second fiddle to yet another Obama even though his name would be at the top of the ticket,” wrote Nate Ashworth, editor in chief of Election Central, a news site.
Mrs. Obama would highlight Mr. Biden’s “weaknesses as a candidate,” and is not likely eager to hit the grueling daily campaign trail or spend another four years in the White House, Mr. Ashworth said.
“It is very likely that Michelle Obama will be stumping for Joe Biden, but will be doing so alongside President Obama, not as Biden’s potential vice president,” the analyst concluded.
