The post-coronavirus world could be a real rat race.<\/p>\n

With humans all stuck inside under stay-at-home orders, rats and other rodents have become more aggressive while scavenging for food,\u00a0the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned in a new advisory<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now they could be ready to unleash a wave of \u201caggressive rodent behavior\u201d on an unsuspecting public as society begins to reopen.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommunity-wide closures have led to a decrease in food available to rodents, especially in dense commercial areas,\u201d the CDC said. \u201cSome jurisdictions have reported an increase in rodent activity as rodents search for new sources of food.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEnvironmental health and rodent control programs may see an increase in service requests related to rodents and reports of unusual or aggressive rodent behavior,\u201d the advisory said.<\/p>\n

The CDC urged residents and restaurant owners to seal up holes where the hangry rats could get inside and to clear up debris and garbage.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollow established guidelines when cleaning up after rodent infestations to prevent exposure to rodent-borne diseases,\u201d the advisory said. \u201cFleas are common on rodents. In area of heavy rodent infestations, workers should consider using a repellent registered by the US Environmental Protection Agency\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Urban rats struggled to find food during the lockdown, and in some cases even resorted to rodent cannibalism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re mammals just like you and I, and so when you\u2019re really, really hungry, you\u2019re not going to act the same \u2014 you\u2019re going to act very bad, usually,\u201d Bobby Corrigan, an urban rodentologist, told NBC News<\/a> last month. \u201cSo these rats are fighting with one another, now the adults are killing the young in the nest and cannibalizing the pups.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
