Chicago Mayor\u00a0Lori Lightfoot<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on Monday pushed back after a reporter questioned whether rioters and looters<\/a> who caused more than $60 million in property damage overnight had been emboldened by the \u201clack of consequences\u201d during summer rioting in the city after the police custody death of George Floyd<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The reporter directed his question to Chicago Police Superintendent\u00a0David Brown during an afternoon press conference. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt almost sounds as though you were saying \u2014 the reason we have this is the courts and the prosecutors were not doing their job, that they were going too easy on the looters from the last time around,\u201d the reporter asks. <\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t take it from me. Just go about what\u2019s been done. There were no consequences for the people arrested,\u201d Brown replied.<\/p>\n

Lightfoot then stepped up to the podium and accused the reporter of trying to pit city officials against the police department. <\/p>\n

\u201cDo not bait us. This is a serious situation,\u201d Lightfoot said. \u201cPeople are concerned about their safety. Officers are concerned about their safety. So, don\u2019t bait us. What we\u2019re saying is, as a result of what happened last night, there have to be consequences. We\u2019ve got teams of people that are aggressively out there identifying the people responsible, looking at the plates, and working on bringing them to justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cWhen we do \u2014 when we do make those arrests, our expectation is that is going to be treated with the level of seriousness that it should be. Don\u2019t try to bait us, mischaracterize, pit one against the other. We\u2019re not playing that. We\u2019re in a serious situation here, and we need a serious response.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reporter insisted he was not trying to bait the mayor before Brown cut him off to ask whether he had another question.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the press conference<\/a>, Brown suggested that the lenient treatment of people who were arrested during the summer unrest over the death of George Floyd, played a role in what happened in Chicago overnight. <\/p>\n

\u201cNot many of those cases were prosecuted to the full extent,\u201d Brown said. \u201cThese looters, these thieves, these criminals being emboldened by (the lack of) consequences \u2026 emboldened to do more.\u201d <\/p>\n

He added that many of the arrests made during May and June, were not \u201cprosecuted the fullest extent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to have consequences for the arrests that Chicago police officers make through great threat to their own safety. They\u2019re being shot at to make these arrests,\u201d Brown said. <\/p>\n

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx has disputed any suggestion that her office had shied away from prosecuting people who were arrested for ransacking businesses weeks ago. She said none of those cases had been dropped.<\/p>\n

“That is simply not true,” she said. “Those cases are coming to court now.”<\/p>\n

CHICAGO RAISES BRIDGES, RESTRICTS DOWNTOWN ACCESS TO TRY AND PREVENT MORE RIOTING<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The melee in downtown Chicago unfolded early Monday following a police shooting on the city’s South Side Sunday afternoon. <\/p>\n

Brown told reporters that the shooting of the man who had opened fire on officers apparently prompted a social media post that urged people to form a car caravan and converge on the business and shopping district.<\/p>\n

Some 400 additional officers were dispatched to the area after the department spotted the post. Over several hours, police made more than 100 arrests and 13 officers were injured, including one who was struck in the head with a bottle, Brown said.<\/p>\n

No officers were wounded by gunfire, but a security guard and a civilian were hospitalized in critical condition after being shot, and five guns were recovered, Brown said. <\/p>\n
