Democrat Beto O\u2019Rourke<\/a>\u00a0tried to get the upper hand late Friday, mocking the gradual reopening of the Texas<\/a> economy from coronavirus<\/a> shutdowns as \u201cDangerous, dumb and weak.\u201d<\/p>\n

But at least two Texas Republicans weren\u2019t having it.<\/p>\n

Rep. Dan Crenshaw<\/a> and Sen. Ted Cruz<\/a> each fired back at O\u2019Rourke, the former congressman from El Paso who failed to unseat Cruz in 2018 and then ran an unsuccessful\u00a0bid for the Democratic Party\u2019s 2020 presidential nomination.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Rourke\u2019s Twitter post was a reaction to a tweet by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who touted the Lone Star State\u2019s reopening plan as \u201cSafe, Smart, and Strong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDangerous, dumb and weak,\u201d O\u2019Rourke wrote in retweeting Abbott\u2019s message.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this the new Dem slogan?\u201d Cruz snapped back.<\/p>\n

Crenshaw derided O\u2019Rourke\u2019s post as \u201ca condescending reaction.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guy who wanted to be Texas\u2019s Senator truly believes Texans can\u2019t make decisions for themselves and that they are \u2018dumb and weak\u2019 for living their lives and trying to feed their families,\u201d Crenshaw wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd yes, he\u2019s talking to all Texans, not just our governor,\u201d Crenshaw added. \u201cGovernor Abbott can\u2019t force anyone to go back to work. Texans are choosing to do that, despite what people like Beto scream from their ivory towers.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a separate tweet, O\u2019Rourke accused Crenshaw of \u201cgetting rich selling his own book to the GOP (and being Trump\u2019s most reliable enabler in the House).\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Rourke then asked his Twitter followers to donate to Crenshaw\u2019s election opponent, Democrat Sima Ladjevardian, a Houston attorney.<\/p>\n

\u201cMillionaires fundraising for millionaires,\u201d Crenshaw responded. \u201cAll while telling middle-class Texans they\u2019re \u2018dumb and weak\u2019 for wanting to get back to work.\u201d <\/p>\n

Crenshaw, who served in Afghanistan as a Navy SEAL, then invited his Twitter followers to donate to his campaign.<\/p>\n

In more commentary on the Texas reopening plan, O\u2019Rourke retweeted a Washington Post<\/a> story that said Texas recently reported new single-day highs in both coronavirus infections and deaths.<\/p>\n

Last week Gov. Abbott outlined Phase II of the Texas reopening plan. It permits child care centers, massage and personal care spas and youth clubs to reopen May 18;\u00a0bars, bowling alleys, bingo halls and other entertainment venues to resume operations May 22 \u2013 with restaurants at 50 percent of capacity \u2013 and sets a May 31 reopening date for youth camps and sporting events.<\/p>\n

As of early Sunday, Texas \u2013 the nation\u2019s No. 2 most populous state, with about 29 million residents \u2013 ranked No. 15 with about 1,400 coronavirus deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
