As calls grow to defund or dismantle<\/a> police departments<\/a> in the wake of the death of George Floyd<\/a>, questions about what that would look like — especially in cities with high crime<\/a> rates — remain.<\/p>\n

In a Saturday\u00a0interview on\u00a0“Fox & Friends Weekend”<\/a>\u00a0with host Pete Hegseth,\u00a0retired Dallas police officer C’mone Wingo said that imagining a city or town in America without law<\/a> and order made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.<\/p>\n

“I just\u00a0think that, in this case, they need to\u00a0do a little bit more research,” she advised. “Not having police, defunding [and]\u00a0dismantling a police\u00a0department, and bringing in perhaps civilians to do the work…What are you going to do when\u00a0the bad people come out? What are you going to do when the bad people show up? When you call 9-1-1 who is going\u00a0to come out?”<\/p>\n

“I think this is something they really need to look at\u00a0and they really need to examine closely.\u00a0Because even if I wasn’t a police\u00a0officer, let me tell you I\u00a0wouldn’t want to live in a city\u00a0that doesn’t have laws,” she stated.<\/p>\n

Fraternal Order of Police VP Joe Gamaldi pointed out that the percentage of the U.S. population that supports defunding or eradicating police departments is less than 30 percent. In a\u00a0HuffPost\/YouGov poll<\/a>\u00a0conducted June 8-10 just 27 percent of Americans favored the move.<\/p>\n

That said, some Democratic leaders<\/a> like Los Angele Mayor Eric Garcetti have committed<\/a> to defunding their departments and the\u00a0city council of Minneapolis has moved<\/a> to replace police with a “holistic” public safety force.<\/p>\n

“But, you know, the Minneapolis<\/a> city council is too busy\u00a0pandering to the mob to even\u00a0notice that [statistic,]” Gamaldi remarked.<\/p>\n

“And, it\u2019s interesting, when they asked the city council member, \u2018What does that look like when I\u2019m being robbed. Who is going to come?\u2019 And, they said, \u2018Well, that\u2019s just your privilege talking,'” he added. “Excuse\u00a0me?\u00a0That’s the privilege of every\u00a0single American in this country\u00a0to feel safe — to be able to call\u00a0on police and have them come out.”<\/p>\n

Gamaldi also noted that as the debate in Minneapolis’s “kangaroo court” rages, so does their crime.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney for Minnesota, Erica MacDonald, met with Minneapolis Police Chief\u00a0Medaria Arradondo\u00a0and several federal law enforcement agencies to map out a plan to curb a recent spike in violent crime<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“This has gotten completely out\u00a0of control,” Gamaldi asserted. “And, we don’t want to hear the\u00a0pandering from the city council\u00a0about \u2018We are going to offer\u00a0wrap-around services and\u00a0holistic approaches.\u2019\u00a0No, the community deserves answers.\u00a0If someone sticks a gun in my\u00a0face tomorrow, who is coming to\u00a0help me?\u00a0And they can’t answer that.”<\/p>\n

Houston Fraternal Order of Police Pres. Dr. Oscar Odom told Hegseth that while a Utopian society is a nice concept, these issues “must be\u00a0examined through the lens of\u00a0reality.”<\/p>\n

“I think that there should be a\u00a0CompStat for political leaders\u00a0to say, \u2018This is your district area. How many murders have happened? And, how many robberies have\u00a0happened? How many assaults have happened?\u00a0And, what have you done?’ And, if you haven’t done anything,\u00a0you need to be charged with\u00a0negligence because you are not\u00a0doing anything,” he said.<\/p>\n

Odom maintained that while city leaders are “changing the game” on police officers “midstream,” it’s their constituents that are suffering.<\/p>\n

“People getting robbed, murdered,\u00a0crime rate — as stated earlier — is\u00a0through the roof [with] over a\u00a0400 percent increase in crime.\u00a0Who is going to pay for this? The citizens?\u00a0Who is going to pay for this?” he asked. “And now, you see, some of the Democrats are trying to\u00a0backtrack and say, \u2018No, we don’t\u00a0mean defund the police.\u00a0No, no, we don’t mean take the\u00a0money away.\u2019 Because they see\u00a0what’s happening.”<\/p>\n
