Well, you can bring it, but you can&#8217;t drink it on the plane.<\/p>\n<p>After passengers are reminded about no smoking, using electronic cigarettes or tampering with the smoke detector in the lavatory, <a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/travel\/airline-news\/2020\/07\/31\/southwest-airlines-tells-flyers-no-drinking-own-alcohol-pandemic\/5557471002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flight attendants will announce: &#8220;It is also prohibited to consume alcohol that you&#8217;ve brought.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The memo attributed the increase in passengers bringing their own alcoholic drinks on board to the\u00a0lack of in-flight drink sales\u00a0and availability of alcohol\u00a0in\u00a0airports during the pandemic. Southwest is only\u00a0serving passengers\u00a0a cup of water and a package of snack mix.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013\u00a0Dawn Gilbertson<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Fauci confident virus vaccine will get to Americans in 2021<\/h2>\n<p>Dr. Anthony Fauci said Friday that <a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/2a4c1d64f8cb8efbadfd581594db8819\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he remains confident that a coronavirus vaccine will be ready by early next year<\/a>, telling lawmakers that a quarter-million Americans already have volunteered to take part in clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p>But if the future looks encouraging, public health alarms are still going off in the present. Officials testifying with Fauci at a contentious House hearing acknowledged that the U.S. remains unable to deliver all COVID-19 test results within two or three days, and they jointly pleaded with Americans to comply with basic precautions such as wearing masks, avoiding crowds, and washing their hands frequently.<\/p>\n<p>Those simple steps can deliver \u201cthe same bang for the buck as if we just shut the entire economy down,\u201d said a frustrated Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adding that he has studies to back that up.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Fauci said he\u2019s \u201ccautiously optimistic that we will have a vaccine by the end of this year and as we go into 2021. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s dreaming &#8230; I believe it\u2019s a reality (and) will be shown to be reality.\u201d As the government\u2019s top infectious disease expert, Fauci heads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013 Associated Press<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Mexico becomes country with third-most deaths<\/h2>\n<p>Mexico has become the country with the third most COVID-19 deaths in the world, behind the United States and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Mexican health officials said Friday there were 688 deaths for the latest 24-hour reporting period, pushing the country\u2019s total to 46,688. That put Mexico just ahead of the United Kingdom, which has 46,119, according to the tally by Johns Hopkins University. Mexico\u2019s population is double that of Britain.<\/p>\n<p>The health officials also said Mexico now has had more than 424,000 confirmed coronavirus cases during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Friday, nine state governors from opposition parties criticized what they call the federal government\u2019s \u201cconfusing messages\u201d on measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013 Associated Press<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Lena Dunham had COVID-19, lingering complications<\/h2>\n<p>Lena Dunham\u00a0has been open about her battle with the chronic illness\u00a0Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Now she&#8217;s <a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/celebrities\/2020\/07\/31\/lena-dunham-had-covid-19-and-suffered-variety-complications\/5559011002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">getting candid about her latest health struggle:\u00a0COVID-19.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Girls&#8221; alum, 34, revealed\u00a0Friday that she was diagnosed with COVID-19 in mid-March. Although she was &#8220;reluctant&#8221; to go public with her diagnosis, Dunham hopes detailing\u00a0her &#8220;intense&#8221; experience with the virus will curb other&#8217;s &#8220;carelessness.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dunham said she was in self-isolation by herself for 21 days fighting COVID-19, after initially confusing the virus&#8217; symptoms with her chronic illness.\u00a0Dunham described a plethora of side effects, including\u00a0loss of \u201csense of taste and smell,\u201d sensitivity to sound, numb hands, inflammation of nerves, a \u201chacking cough,\u201d difficulty breathing, a \u201cpounding headache\u201d and random red rashes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It felt like I was a complex machine that has been unplugged and then my wires rerouted into the wrong inputs,&#8221; she said. In isolation, &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t believe how intense the loneliness had been, in addition to illness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013\u00a0Cydney Henderson<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Coin shortage in US has banks begging for spare change<\/h2>\n<p>The <a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2020\/08\/01\/coin-shortage-us-how-long-will-it-last\/5524835002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19 change shortage<\/a> has bankers across the country asking customers to bring in rolled coins as a way to pump more pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters into circulation.\u00a0A Wisconsin bank this summer went so far as to offer\u00a0an extra $5 for every $100 in coins that are brought in.\u00a0The deal turned out to be incredibly popular and lasted but seven days.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s quite a switch from a time when many banks didn&#8217;t want your spare change. In the past few years,\u00a0many big banks phased out services that would count your coins. Some, like charge a 10% fee to count change for non-customers.\u00a0Other banks charge both customers and non-customers.<\/p>\n<p>But a lot has changed during the pandemic.\u00a0Since mid-March, huge chunks of the U.S. economy have shut down in an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.\u00a0 Laundromats, coffee shops, bank branches\u00a0and other spots where coins regularly changed hands have either closed their doors or significantly trimmed operations.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the &#8220;U.S. Mint\u2019s\u00a0production of coin also decreased\u00a0due to measures put in place to protect its employees,&#8221; according to the Federal Reserve. Production has been ramped up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013 Susan Tompor, Detroit Free Press<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>States issue warnings about accuracy\u00a0of hospitalization data<\/h2>\n<p>More than two weeks after the Trump administration ordered a sudden shift in the reporting process for hospitalized COVID-19 patients, states continue to have trouble adjusting.\u00a0Missouri didn\u2019t have hospitalization data available on its COVID-19 website from July 15 to July 24, at a time when daily new case counts were nearly doubling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving that local data disappear during that critical period didn\u2019t allow us to react to what was going on in our communities,\u201d said Dave Dillon, vice president of public and media relations for the Missouri Hospital Association.<\/p>\n<p>On July 15, hospitals became required to send all patient information directly to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services instead of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which had been doing it since the pandemic\u2019s start.\u00a0The switch, which drew condemnation from many public health professionals, was supposed to provide more complete data and faster reporting. But states have run into technological and operational problems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>HHS still hasn\u2019t spelled out key definitions, said Dillon, such as whether hospitals should count patients awaiting test results or only those confirmed to have COVID-19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>California, Texas and South Carolina have all issued warnings about the accuracy of their data, according to the COVID Tracking Project, a volunteer organization launched from The Atlantic.\u00a0A look at COVID Tracking\u2019s data shows anomalies for hospitalization counts in Texas, California and Wisconsin as well as Missouri \u2013 consecutive days with no updates, or else sudden drops or spikes. COVID Tracking says it now considers state and federal hospitalization data, which it called \u201cone of the best measurements of the size and severity of outbreaks across the United States,\u201d unreliable.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013 Camille McManus<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Florida sheriffs meet with Trump after conference with virus-infected colleague<\/h2>\n<p>Florida sheriffs who had attended a conference this week with a COVID-19-infected colleague met Friday afternoon with President Donald Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood reported his positive test just hours before more than a dozen other sheriffs stood with Trump on the Tampa International Airport tarmac.<\/p>\n<p>Chitwood had attended the Florida Sheriff&#8217;s Association conference earlier this week in Bonita Springs. Gov. Ron DeSantis, Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody and law enforcement officers from around the state were also at the conference.<\/p>\n<p>Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno, who hosted the conference and whose agency polices Bonita Springs, stood behind Trump along with 14 other sheriffs as Trump praised them and announced he had received &#8220;dozens&#8221; of their endorsements. Neither Trump nor the sheriffs wore masks. Two of the sheriffs said they had been rapid-tested for COVID-19 before meeting with Trump.<\/p>\n<h2>Georgia to reopen temporary hospital at giant convention center<\/h2>\n<p>After winding down operations at the end of May, a temporary hospital at one of the nation&#8217;s largest convention centers will reopen and begin receiving COVID-19 patients next week, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The Georgia World Congress Center will reopen with a total capacity of 120 beds and will house an initial surge of 60 beds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These additional hospital beds will provide relief to surrounding healthcare facilities while providing top notch care for patients,&#8221; Kemp said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,700 people have died and more than 186,000 people have tested positive for the virus in Georgia, which was the first state to begin reopening businesses at the end of April<\/p>\n<h2>Study: Colleges could reopen safely if they screen students every 2 days<\/h2>\n<p>It could be safe for students to return to campus this fall if colleges conduct rapid coronavirus screening every two days, according to a <a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2768923?resultClick=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study published Friday<\/a>\u00a0in the Journal of the American Medical Association by researchers at Yale, Harvard and\u00a0 Massachusetts General Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers created a\u00a0computer model to simulate a\u00a0medium-sized college with about 5,000 students \u2013 all younger than 30 years, nonimmune and living in a congregate setting \u2013 and initially assumed that there were 10 undetected, asymptomatic cases of COVID-19 on campus.<\/p>\n<p>The model found that by screening every two days with a rapid and inexpensive test \u2013 even if not always accurate\u00a0\u2013 coupled with &#8220;strict behavioral interventions,&#8221; a college could maintain a &#8220;controllable number&#8221; of\u00a0infections at a cost of\u00a0$470 per student per semester.<\/p>\n<h2>US strikes biggest coronavirus vaccine deal yet<\/h2>\n<p>The United States announced Friday it will <a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2020\/07\/31\/2-1-billion-sanofi-gsk-deal-100-million-coronavirus-vaccine-doses\/5554814002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pay French pharmaceutical company Sanofi and Great Britain\u2019s GlaxoSmithKline<\/a> up to $2.1 billion to test and produce 100 million doses of an experimental coronavirus vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of the money will support further development and early-stage clinical trials to ensure it is safe and effective. The rest will pay for the first 100 million doses, with an option on 500 million more. The majority of the $2.1 billion will go to Sanofi, which made the vaccine candidate. GlaxoSmithKline made a booster that improves how the body responds to it.<\/p>\n<p>The deal is part of Operation Warp Speed, a White House-led initiative aimed at getting a vaccine to stop SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
