A woman in Jacksonville, Florida, is going to great lengths to visit her husband with early-onset Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, no visitors were allowed<\/a> inside the\u00a0Rosecastle at Deerwood nursing<\/a> home where Steve Daniel lived, according to WFAA.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told him I\u2019d be there with him, holding his hand,\u201d said his wife, Mary, adding that when they tried a window visit, Steve just cried.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t explain it to him,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

The couple had been separated since March. Mary told reporters in June that he had lost ten pounds during that time.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s just sitting there, melting away. I know it. I can feel it,\u201d she explained at the time.<\/p>\n

The need to protect the elderly and medically fragile was something Mary understood, but she believed she could follow the safety rules and precautions to go inside and see her husband.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis nurse practitioner goes in there every day. I saw her with [a] gown and her gloves and they scanned her for her temperature. Same with staff every day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, when the nursing<\/a> facility\u2019s corporate office heard the couple\u2019s story, they called and offered her a job as a dishwasher inside the nursing home.<\/p>\n

After more than 100 days apart, Mary was recently reunited with her beloved husband.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe touched my face, even with the mask on, just to touch my face and look at me. Just to touch him, just to touch his arm and to be that close to him, again, after 114 days,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m absolutely sure he knew me, and he actually said my name, he actually said Mary, which I\u2019m incredibly thankful for,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Because of their experience, Mary\u00a0created<\/a> a Facebook group called \u201cCaregivers for Compromise \u2013 because isolation kills too!\u201d that hopes to persuade the governor that safe visits are possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer group will also push for the state to communicate potential plans with families, such as what the criteria will be exactly to open nursing homes to visitors,\u201d according to WFAA.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
