Even drinkers who stick to the weekly \u2018low-risk\u2019 alcohol guidelines are at greater risk of cancer and early death, scientists say.<\/p>\n

In the UK, low-risk drinking is classified as six pints of beer spread out over the week.<\/p>\n

However, experts say that even sticking to this can harm one\u2019s health \u2014 and even cause hospitalization or death.<\/p>\n

Researchers from Canada made the discovery after evaluating alcohol-related harms on national and regional scales or by demographic.<\/p>\n

Professor Adam Sherk of the University of Victoria, in British Columbia, Canada, and his colleagues used an open-access model dubbed \u2018InterMAHP\u2019 \u2014 \u2018International Model of Alcohol Harms and Policies.\u2019<\/p>\n

In particular, the team focused on alcohol consumption practices in British Columbia during 2014, analyzing anonymized data from three sources.<\/p>\n

Low-risk drinking<\/h2>\n

These were substance use surveys, hospital data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information and mortality data from Statistics Canada.<\/p>\n

According to the guidelines published by the Canadian government, low-risk drinking constitutes no more than ten drinks per week for women and 15 for men.<\/p>\n

These recommendations are slightly more \u201cgenerous\u201d than in the UK, where low-risk drinking is classified as six pints of beer spread out over the week \u2014 whereas Canada\u2019s guidelines would allow nine pints.<\/p>\n

The researchers\u2019 investigation found that moderate drinkers are not \u201cinsulated from harm\u201d and actually account for significant numbers of alcohol-related issues.<\/p>\n

Alcohol-attributable deaths<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

In particular, they found that 50 percent of cancer deaths resulting from alcohol use in British Columbia occurred among moderate drinkers.<\/p>\n

And 38 percent of all alcohol-attributable deaths there were experienced by either people drinking below the weekly limit, or among former drinkers.<\/p>\n

Based on their findings, the researchers concluded that many countries\u2019 low-risk drinking guidelines are too high, Canada in particular.<\/p>\n

And they are now urging the majority of\u00a0countries to tighten their recommendations around alcohol \u2014 the UK included.<\/p>\n

They say guidelines should match those of the Netherlands \u2014 where technically, continuing the comparison, no more than 5.6 pints of beer are recommended on a weekly basis, although they also encourage total abstinence.<\/p>\n

They encourage individuals not to drink and then to keep under one glass per day if they do.<\/p>\n

Writing in the\u00a0Journal of Studies on Alcohol & Drugs<\/a>, Prof Sherk said: \u201cDon\u2019t drink or, if you do, drink no more than one drink per day.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that when it comes to alcohol, people should err on the side of caution, writing: \u201cWhen it comes to alcohol use, less is better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite this, the team did find one benefit of moderate drinking \u2013 for women, such appears to be associated with a lower risk of\u00a0diabetes, heart attack and stroke.<\/p>\n

\u2018This protective effect did not appear to hold for men, who experienced harm at all drinking levels,\u2019 the researchers wrote.<\/p>\n

The study results come after researchers found last year that a glass of wine a day is worse for the heart than binge drinking.<\/p>\n

Scientists in South Korea found that frequent but minimal drinkers are more likely to develop atrial fibrillation \u2014 irregular heartbeat.<\/p>\n

It can cause shortness of breath and chest pains, and raise the risk of a stroke five-fold.<\/p>\n

The scientists warned this could be \u201cdangerous\u201d after studying the drinking habits of almost ten million people.<\/p>\n

Dr Jong-Il Choi, leader of the Korean study, said the heart condition has \u201cdreadful complications\u201d that could wreck lives.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
