A reporter from the Washington Post challenged President Donald Trump about his accusation over the weekend that former President Barack Obama, “committed the biggest political crime in American history.” (May 11)<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON\u00a0\u2013\u00a0President Donald Trump will not be unveiling his predecessor Barack Obama\u2019s official White House portrait, a report says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

NBC first<\/a> reported that the event to unveil Obama’s official portrait wasn’t currently on the calendar, and may not even occur while Trump is in office, including potentially\u00a0throughout the duration of a second term\u00a0if he\u00a0wins re-election.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This would mean\u00a0“it could be 2025” before Obama’s portrait unveiling happens, the report states, despite Obama leaving office in 2017.<\/p>\n

The tradition of first-term presidents hosting their\u00a0predecessor\u00a0dates back decades\u00a0through many administrations and\u00a0is supposed to represent\u00a0a rare moment of harmony and camaraderie in Washington.<\/p>\n

Most recently,\u00a0Obama hosted former President George W. Bush<\/a> and former first lady Laura Bush for the unveiling of their official portraits.<\/p>\n

During that ceremony, Obama said<\/a>,\u00a0“We may have our differences politically, but the presidency transcends those differences.”<\/p>\n

The 45th and 44th presidents have broken some precedents as their relationship has remained tense through\u00a0Trump’s tenure thus far, and has escalated\u00a0even more in the past few weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump has repeatedly accused\u00a0Obama of unjustly targeting\u00a0his associates in what he calls “Obamagate,”<\/a> and has called on the Senate Judiciary Committee to call his predecessor\u00a0to testify in hearings about the origins of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.<\/p>\n

Trump, however, has yet to explain\u00a0what crime he thinks Obama committed specifically, but said his predecessor<\/a>\u00a0“committed the biggest political crime in American history.”<\/p>\n

NBC also reported\u00a0that Obama has \u201cno interest\u201d in taking part in the portrait\u00a0tradition while Trump occupies the White House.<\/p>\n

Obama, who has usually remained quiet about Trump<\/a> since leaving the White House, has taken some veiled swipes in recent weeks during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Addressing<\/a>\u00a0a virtual\u00a0event Saturday for historically black colleges and universities,\u00a0Obama said many U.S. leaders\u00a0“aren\u2019t even pretending to be in charge” during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

About a week ago,\u00a0Obama called the\u00a0response<\/a> to the coronavirus pandemic\u00a0an “absolute chaotic disaster”\u00a0in a call with 3,000 people who served in his administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.,\u00a0said Obama<\/a> “should have kept his mouth shut” over\u00a0the Trump administration’s handling of coronavirus, continuing that he thinks “it’s a little bit classless, frankly, to critique an administration that comes after you.”<\/p>\n

Obama and Trump\u00a0have reportedly only met once in person since Trump’s Inauguration Day, and that was at the funeral for President George H.W. Bush<\/a> in\u00a02018.\u00a0<\/p>\n

During a Fox News town hall, Trump said<\/a> of their interaction: “Sat next to him, and I said, ‘Hello.’ And then I said, ‘goodbye.’ That’s about it.”<\/p>\n

The official White House portraits are different\u00a0from the\u00a0portraits that hang in the National Portrait Gallery. The Obamas’<\/a>w<\/a>ere particularly popular in the nation’s capital\u00a0after their unveiling in February 2018,\u00a0prompting a record number of visitors.<\/a><\/p>\n

The most recent president\u00a0to not attend a official portrait unveiling was\u00a0Jimmy Carter, who requested not to have\u00a0a ceremony.<\/a><\/p>\n

According to the report, the portrait process for the Obama’s “stalled” in 2017, after they went through the process of selecting\u00a0the artist, and\u00a0 finalizing a contract.<\/p>\n

Both\u00a0a spokesperson for Obama and the White House declined to comment to\u00a0NBC.<\/p>\n
