Attorney General William Barr<\/a>\"\"<\/img>William Pelham Barr<\/a>Frustration builds in key committee ahead of Graham subpoena vote\u00a0<\/a> Barr asks US attorney to further investigate ‘unmasking’ in 2016<\/a> Trump threatens to veto FISA bill ahead of House vote<\/a> MORE<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> has asked a U.S. attorney to look into the practice of \u201cunmasking\u201d before and after the 2016 presidential election, a spokesperson for the Justice Department said Wednesday on\u00a0Fox News\u2019s \u201cHannity.<\/a>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said Barr has asked U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas John Bash to review the \u201cunmasking.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Unmasking inherently isn’t wrong, but certainly, the frequency, the motivation and the reasoning behind unmasking can be problematic, and when you’re looking at unmasking as part of a broader investigation \u2013 like John Durham<\/a>John Durham<\/a>Barr asks US attorney to further investigate ‘unmasking’ in 2016<\/a> Rosenstein to testify as part of Graham’s Russia investigation probe<\/a> New FBI document confirms the Trump campaign was investigated without justification<\/a> MORE<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>‘s investigation \u2013 looking specifically at who was unmasking whom, can add a lot to our understanding about motivation and big picture events,” Kupec said on \u201cHannity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Barr tapped Durham to oversee an investigation into the FBI\u2019s decisionmaking in the Russia probe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kupec said Durham was looking into the \u201cunmasking,\u201d but told Fox News that Barr determined certain aspects of the practice needed further review and assigned Bash.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There is no evidence that Obama or Biden were involved in criminal wrongdoing in connection with the Russia investigation, and Durham has yet to charge anyone in connection with the probe. But Trump has upped his attacks on his predecessor and pointed to details released in connection with the case against former national security adviser Michael Flynn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Trump administration this month declassified a list of Obama-era officials who have received Flynn\u2019s name after requesting it be \u201cunmarked\u201d in intelligence reports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Experts have described the act of unmasking as something that is not uncommon within the intelligence community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Justice Department moved to drop charges against Flynn for lying to the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. in 2016. The department\u2019s motion needs to be approved by a judge. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
