Fred Rogers forged close bonds with ” Mister Rogers” co-star Francois Clemmons, now Clemmons is opening up about how the late icon encouraged him to not expose that he was gay.

In his new memoir entitled “Officer Clemmons,” the 75- year-old singer and star explains Rogers as his coach. Officer Clemmons was a familiar face to audiences of ” Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” from 1968 to 1993, according to IMDB.

In the book, Clemmons recalls being called into Rogers’ studio for a chat.

” Franc, you have skills and gifts that set you apart and above the crowd,” Clemmons remembers Rogers informing him, according to People. “Somebody has actually informed us that you were seen at the local gay bar downtown. Now, I desire you to know, Franc, that if you’re gay, it doesn’t matter to me at all. Whatever you state and do is great with me, but if you’re going to be on the show as a crucial member of the Area, you can’t be out as gay.”

In a separate interview with the outlet about the traumatic experience, Clemmons recalls breaking down in tears as his role on the television program trusted keeping his homosexuality a secret.

Clemmons remembers Rogers saying, “You must do this Francois since it threatens my dream,” the outlet said.

” I was ruined,” Clemmons told the publication.

Following his instructions to not come out as gay, Rogers also encouraged Clemmons to marry a female.

Clemmons and Sheridan divorced separated 1974 and he later on out.

Today, Rogers’ confidante states he forgives him.

The show remained on the air up until 2001.
