The so-called \u2018Cancel the Rent\u2019 movement has gained steam and the support of politicians\u00a0like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but landlords argue that stiffing them is no solution to the\u00a0coronavirus<\/a>-driven economic crisis.<\/p>\n

It comes at a time as some\u00a0Americans\u00a0who have lost their jobs<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0had their pay cut are finding themselves in\u00a0an\u00a0increasingly difficult situation as they must\u00a0find ways to\u00a0cover their\u00a0rent\u00a0without the income they used to have.<\/p>\n

On the other side of the coin, landlords are concerned that if\u00a0rent isn\u2019t paid, they will struggle with their own bills, such as building maintenance and\u00a0state\u00a0property taxes.<\/p>\n

The social movement has gained significant support on social media, with #CancelRent trending and protesters holding online video rallies.<\/p>\n

Jay Martin, executive director of the Community Housing Improvement Program<\/a> \u2013 which represents 4,000 New York City landlords \u2013 told Fox News that elected officials need to find a solution that does not financially hurt either party.<\/p>\n

\u201cBasically when elected officials come out and say they are supporting things like the cancel rent movement and proposing that they are supporting rent strikes, they\u2019re essentially supporting the inability for folks to pay the bills that the government is putting on them directly,\u201d Martin said. \u201cSo,\u00a0it\u2019s a problem and it\u2019s not something we support.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u00a0believes one solution could be the government giving property tax relief\u00a0to landlords. This, he said,\u00a0could help both sides.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is\u00a0actually\u00a0the most direct way\u00a0that landlords can provide flexibility for those who can\u2019t\u00a0pay the rent,\u201d Martin said. \u201cThirty\u00a0percent of the average monthly rent check in New York is already paid right back to the city in property taxes \u2013 so that is a huge amount of flexibility an owner would have to work out a rent deal with a tenant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are asking and advocating for the federal government to\u00a0provide some sort of direct voucher to those tenants who maybe don\u2019t qualify for unemployment benefits or have somehow fallen through the cracks of the relief that has already been applied,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Cea Weaver, the campaign coordinator\u00a0of\u00a0Housing Justice For All<\/a>\u00a0— a\u00a0coalition of organizations working with New Yorkers who are struggling to pay rent \u2013 says the issue will come to\u00a0the\u00a0forefront\u00a0when moratoriums on evictions end and housing courts reopen.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are going to have rent that they owed with money that they don\u2019t have,\u201d she tells Fox News. \u201cPeople have lost income. In New York, people\u00a0already could\u00a0barely afford their rent. We already had\u00a0a totally unaffordable housing market.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weaver says her group is \u201corganizing to put political pressure on our state representatives to stand up to Gov. Andrew\u00a0Cuomo<\/a> to do the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all have representatives in the state Senate and state assembly who could be using their offices to push him to do more,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Some landlords around the U.S. have gotten creative with their rent relief.\u00a0In Milwaukee<\/a>, one landlord dropped his two tenants\u2019 April rent to just $100.\u00a0And in New Jersey<\/a>, a landlord who owns 12 rental properties\u00a0has decided to waive rent for April, May, and June altogether — a move that will end up costing him $50,000.<\/p>\n

DEMOCRATIC \u2018SQUAD\u2019 MEMBERS JOIN GROWING CHORUS OF CALLS TO \u2018#CANCELRENT\u2019 DURING CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill<\/a>,\u00a0Rep.\u00a0Ilhan\u00a0Omar, D-Minn.,\u00a0has introduced a bill<\/a>\u00a0to cancel all rent and mortgage payments during the pandemic. The bill — co-sponsored by fellow ‘Squad’ members Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Rashida\u00a0Tlaib, D-Mich., among others — aims to establish full rent forgiveness, as well as a relief fund for landlords and mortgage owners.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must take major action to protect the health and economic security of the most vulnerable, including the millions of Americans currently at risk of housing instability and homelessness,\u201d Omar said on her website.<\/p>\n

President Trump initially ordered a freeze on evictions and foreclosures until the end of April, and governors and mayors across the country instituted measures extending that date even longer, but none of their orders have canceled rent outright. Even if a person doesn\u2019t pay their rent, the amount due\u00a0accumulates, meaning that when the orders expire, the bills must still be paid.<\/p>\n

In a comment to The New York Times, Tara Raghuveer, director of the Homes Guarantee campaign of People\u2019s Action, indicated that “Cancel the Rent” movement\u2019s\u00a0ultimate\u00a0goal may not be to\u00a0actually see\u00a0rent canceled \u2013 as the action may be unconstitutional since it would require the government to void contracts and alter bank operations. Instead, Raghuveer sees a political potential in the movement.<\/p>\n

\u201cRent is not being paid, and the organizing strategy is figuring out how we rally around that and politicize it for our benefit,\u201d Raghuveer said.<\/p>\n
