With social distancing standards in result, a popular farmer’s market in Fauquier County, Virginia, decided to make its opening day a drive-thru occasion, encouraging people to remain apart during the coronavirus outbreak.
It went much better than expected.
More than 350 cars lined up to buy produce from the farmer’s market in Warrenton, as its opening day transitioned from clients strolling through to driving through.
” What we did was take our vendors and utilize a series of the town’s car park to put the vendors in a type of drive-thru model,” stated Warrenton Town Supervisor Brandie Schaeffer.
The market motivated pre-orders and set up a website with links to all the vendors, in addition to their contact number. They usually see around 500 clients at each market, but Schaeffer said they weren’t sure if individuals would show up to drive-thru.
She was happily shocked when the line of cars showed up for their 45 th opening day.
” I think everybody was just delighted to also just type of go out. We’re taking a look at each other through masks and talking from a social distance perspective but it was likewise simply good to see our homeowners and to see our suppliers and just to have an opportunity to even wave and get your fruit and vegetables along the way so I believe it was a much necessary thing for our community,” Schaeffer stated.
They’re taking it week by week, however intend on having the farmer’s market every Saturday from 8 a.m. to midday.
” The farmers market is among those things that our residents enjoy and they love strolling down there and connecting, but there is always the opposite of it, which is we are a rural agricultural community so supporting our local farmers is very important to us,” Schaeffer said.
