A temperature of 54.4C – or 129.9F – has been recorded in Death Valley, California, in what some extreme weather watchers believe could be the hottest reading ever reliably recorded on the planet.

The United States National Weather Service’s automated weather station at Furnace Creek near the border with Nevada hit the extreme high at 3:41pm on Sunday afternoon, a statement said.

🥵Yep it was HOT out there today…

So hot in fact, that the PRELIMINARY high temperature @DeathValleyNPS was 130°F. If verified, this will be the hottest temperature officially verified since July of 1913. For more info…https://t.co/qFXcIVoPig#DeathValley #Climate #CAwx pic.twitter.com/lAl8NQDCyp

“This observed high temperature is considered preliminary and not yet official,” a statement from NWS Las Vegas said.

“If verified, this will be the hottest temperature officially verified since July of 1913, also at Death Valley.”

Per the climate data in xmACIS2, this is the first time since 1913 that Death Valley has reached 130F. In July 2013, it last reached 129F. If valid, it would be the hottest August temperature at the site by 3F. @NWSVegas pic.twitter.com/gZNBW4NXI4

August 16, 2020

If the temperature reading is verified, it would beat the previous hottest August day for the United States.

Death Valley’s all-time record high, according to the World Meteorological Organization, is 134F (56.7°C) taken on 10 July 1913 at Greenland Ranch. That reading still stands as the hottest ever recorded on the planet’s surface, according to the WMO.

The Death Valley 1913 reading was installed as the planet’s hottest after a 2013 WMO investigation dismissed a 58C temperature supposedly recorded in Libya in September 1922.

A committee concluded the Libya reading was likely wrong with human-error, the type of thermometer used and inconsistencies with other temperatures in the region all contributing to that temperature being struck off.

But Christopher Burt, from private US meteorological service and who prompted the investigation into the Libya record, has also challenged the legitimacy of the 1913 Death Valley readings saying they were “essentially not possible from a meteorological perspective.”

Speaking to the Washington Post, Prof Randy Cerveny, of Arizona State University and who leads a WMO group that maintains an archive of climate extremes, said of the new Death Valley temperature reading: “Everything I’ve seen so far indicates that is a legitimate observation.”

He was recommending the WMO “preliminarily accept the observation” but that the reading would be examined in detail in the coming weeks.

The only other WMO-verified temperature record higher than those taken at Death Valley are from July 1931 at Kebili in Tunisia, where a reading of 131F (55C) was taken.

But like many older temperature readings, this too has been challenged.

Some extreme weather watchers believe the most recent Death valley reading could – in time – be verified as the hottest ever reliably recorded on the planet.

Bob Henson
(@bhensonweather)

Indeed, if Sunday’s temperature is found to be valid–and assuming Chris Burt’s exhaustive work is correct–then we have a new global heat record on our hands. We’ll have more to say about this at @CC_Yale on Monday. https://t.co/P58jNH6AMt

August 17, 2020

Bob Henson, a meteorologist, told a blog of the American Geophysical Union: “It’s quite possible the Death Valley high set a new global heat record. The extreme nature of the surrounding weather pattern makes such a reading plausible, so the case deserves a solid review.

“There are nagging questions about the validity of even hotter reports from Death Valley in 1913 and Tunisia in 1931. What we can say with high confidence is that, if confirmed, this is the highest temperature observed on Earth in almost a century.”

August 17, 2020

Prof James Renwick, a climate scientist at Victoria University of Wellington, has taken part in WMO efforts to check temperature readings.

He said the Death Valley reading would need to be checked and verified before any record could be confidently declared. Checks would be made of the instruments to make sure there had been no changes at the Death Valley site, which is close to a visitors’ centre at Furnace Creek.

He said: “There will be a lot of cross-checking to make sure that that value is correct.”

“We are proof that they cannot keep these children safe,” said Terina Neal, the mother of one of the teens who is sick.

HOOD RIVER, Oregon — There’s a COVID-19 outbreak in Hood River County, and according to the health department, it involves at least five student-athletes and their families.

The mother of one of those athletes said the whole family is now sick.

“We are proof that they cannot keep these children safe,” said Terina Neal, who is not mincing words when it comes to having her boys doing anything at school.

The Hood River County Health Department announced the outbreak that includes Neal’s foster son. Now, she said the whole family of seven has it.

“We all have varying degrees or severity of cases,” said Neal, who added that her 15-year-old who first tested positive has the least severe symptoms. Her older son has been hit the hardest.

“My soon to be 19-year-old has the worst symptoms,” Neal said. “He’s very fatigued, sore throat, body aches, he feels pretty crummy.”

Her 15-year-old was only a few days into both basketball and football conditioning sessions at Hood River Valley High School when he tested positive for COVID-19.

Neal said she, her husband and five foster kids were all being very careful. But they allowed the 15-year-old to go work out, because he was going stir crazy and they thought it would be safe.

“The fact that in a sporting event where children are outside a good portion of the time, they’re in smaller groups…tells me we can’t do it, it’s too soon. We can’t do it and they need to listen to that,” said Neal.

Hood River County School District Superintendent Rich Polkinghorn is concerned. He said the school was following all the guidelines: taking check-in temperatures, sanitizing, small groups, and social distancing.

“I don’t know that we could have been more careful, and it just sort of reinforces the same thing that we’ve all heard about this virus: that it’s stealthy. You can be asymptomatic, you don’t know you’re sick, you can spread it easily”, said Polkinghorn.

The high school has shut down practices for 14 days. And on Tuesday, the health department recommended that all sports groups not meet until at least Aug. 2.

“The increasing rate of infection in Hood River County should be a concern for us all,” the health department said.

Meanwhile, Neal said she’s got a lot of support from near and far.

“I’ve had a huge amount of support in our community but also across the nation,” she said. “My post on Facebook has been shared over 350 times in several different states.”

Neal’s position is there’s no way to safely have in-person learning this fall.

“There is absolutely no way possible I will be sending my kids back to school, and schools should definitely be shut down,” she said.

The superintendent said he’s listening and considering all options. But they have not made a decision on school yet.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Quality of Life Medical and Research Center in Tucson will be one of 87 clinics nationwide conducting Phase 3 trials of Moderna’s mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine.

The study will look at 30,000 adult participants at high risk of contracting the coronavirus. The trial is now expected to begin July 27.

The mRNA-1273 vaccine is being developed to prevent COVID-19 by producing antibodies to the virus.

According to clinicaltrials.gov, the study is designed to primarily evaluate the efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity of mRNA-1273 to prevent COVID-19 for up to 2 years after the second dose of mRNA-1273.

Moderna is the first biotech company to begin coronavirus vaccines on humans. Its Phase 1 trial began in mid-March.

Participants of the Phase 3 trial will either receive the vaccine or a placebo. They will receive two doses 29 days apart. They will be tracked for two years to see whether they get COVID-19 or have any adverse reactions to the vaccine.

Participants will be routinely checked for antibodies.

Trial sites will begin registering people for the trial next week, according to Moderna. They hope to have efficacy data by Thanksgiving.

Quality of Life Medical and Research Center is located in midtown Tucson.

This is the second COVID-19 trial taking place in Tucson. Last week, AZ Clinical Trials announced a new antibody trial, with hopes of stopping the spread of COVID-19.

Nineteen more Hidalgo County residents died due to COVID-19 and an additional 393 cases of the disease were confirmed, county officials reported Friday.

Among those who died were residents of Mission, San Juan, McAllen, Edinburg, Pharr and Alamo. Several were in their 70s, two were in their 30s and one in their 40s.

“Each day we are losing more of our fellow county residents to this deadly virus,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez stated in the release. “I send my deepest condolences to the families of these victims. Please remember to take personal responsibility for you and family by continuing to use proper hygiene, social distancing, and, most importantly, wearing a mask.”

Of the county’s total number of 7,727 positive cases, 4,696 are active.

Currently, there are 798 COVID hospitalizations in the county and 198  of those patients are in an intensive care unit.

Cameron County health officials reported six COVID-19 related deaths on Friday, bringing their death toll to 77.

The six individuals include five men — a 47-year old from La Feria, a 60-year old from Primera, a 71-year old from Rio Hondo, a 73-year old from Brownsville, and a 75-year old from Harlingen — and a 79-year old woman from Harlingen.

The county also confirmed 250 new cases. So far, they’ve reported a total of 3,496 cases of the disease, 1,092 of which are currently active.

Also on Friday, Starr County reported 27 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, raising its total to 1,032 and their active cases to 738.

In addition to the confirmed positive cases, the county is reporting five COVID-19 related deaths, according to information provided by Dr. Jose Vazquez, the county health authority.

However, there are 26 more deaths that are pending confirmation.

Vazquez previously explained that COVID-19 deaths in Starr County were significantly under-reported largely due to the amount of time it takes to certify as having been related to the disease.

That usually happens after the Department of State Health Services receives a death certificate verifying the death as a COVID-19 related one.

Willacy County reported five new positive cases of the coronavirus disease for a total of 256 cases there.

The newly confirmed patients include four women — one under the age of 10, two in their 30s and one in their 60s — and one man is his 30s, according to a news release issued by Willacy County Judge Aurelio “Keter” Guerra.

“Our officials and staff continue to work very closely with our neighboring counties and state health services department,” Guerra stated in the release. “The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) will conduct case investigations on this, and all positive COVID-19 cases that arise and ensure that proper isolation and 14-day quarantine is strictly adhered to.”

Individuals seeking information about where to get tested or who have any questions are urged to call the DSHS hotline at (956) 421-5505.

“Please continue to take all local, county, CDC and Texas DSHS recommended precautions to keep your family safe,” Guerra stated. “Stay safe everyone and let’s get through this together.”

EDINBURG — Hidalgo County reported 248 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, another single-day high being set, and two additional deaths from complications related to the virus.

Cameron County reported 111 new cases Tuesday and the coronavirus-related death of a 21-year-old woman from Indian Lake, the Rio Grande Valley’s youngest coronavirus fatality so far.

The Texas Department of State Health Services also confirmed 21 new cases of COVID-19 in Willacy County on Tuesday, bringing the total there to 114.

This brought the tally for new cases in the Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday to 380.

Tuesday was also the second consecutive day Hidalgo County announced its highest case increase.

The new fatalities, a man in his 40s and a woman in her 70s from Mission, both had underlying medical conditions and brought the overall death toll here to 25.

“Another day brings two more tragic deaths of some of our neighbors,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez wrote in a release. “My heart goes out to these people’s family and friends. We must listen to the warnings of medical experts to stop these deaths. Stay home, stay away from people. These are simple solutions to protect not only yourself but your loved ones.”

The new cases bring the total for the county to 2,130, of which 1,344 are still active.

A little over 60% of the new cases are under 40. Of the 248 people on the list, 16.53% are under 20, 21.37% are in their 20s, 22.18% are in their 30s, 16.13% are in their 40s, 12.5% are in their 50s, 4.03% are in their 60s and 7.26% are listed as being 70 or older.

Edinburg saw the largest increase in cases from the municipalities on the list at 51, about a fifth of them. McAllen and Pharr saw the next highest jumps in cases, 36 and 35 respectively.

Women account for 56.15% of the new cases, 43.85% of them are men. Gender for four of the cases was not identified.

Golden Grape Entertainment, the company that owns and operates H-E-B Park, announced Tuesday that an employee there had tested positive for COVID-19 and the facility has been temporarily closed for deep cleaning.

Weslaco ISD confirmed in a statement that a Weslaco East High School employee had tested positive for the virus Tuesday as well.

“Employees and parents of students who were in direct contact with the individual during the Summer Strength and Conditioning Program have been informed. If you have not received any communication from Weslaco East High School, your student was not in direct contact; and therefore, not at high-risk of exposure,” a statement from the district read.

The Texas Juvenile Justice department confirmed Evins Regional Juvenile Center’s fifth case, a teacher and a youth development coach whose test was confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

So far no youth at the facility have tested positive, a release from TJJD says.

According to a release from the company, the employee last worked at the facility on June 15, and less than 10 employees who were in prolonged contact with the person have been notified.

We have compiled a list of regional event and community related updates.

It’s the fifth day in a row that the daily increase has been less than 1,000.

Counties and lawmakers continue to pressure him, but Wolf said he hasn’t changed his criteria for deciding which counties can emerge from his stay-at-home order and his business shutdown order.

The health department also reported 44 new deaths Thursday, and 231 more from over the past few weeks.

A virtual veterans expo will take place at the same time.

There were also 137 new deaths reported, which occurred over the past several weeks, officials said.

“Without assistance, there are many businesses that may not survive this.”

‘This is to call attention to the plight of our industry and ask Congress and the White House to help get back on our feet.’

The additional tests are part of Murphy’s plan to get the state back open.

Wolf said Tuesday his administration will undertake the surveillance testing with a goal of testing every resident and employee once a week.

Local school districts are preparing for multiple possibilities amid a sea of unknowns.

That brings the total number of cases in the state to 57,991, officials said.

The district is not replacing retiring teachers and staff, and is considering cutting after-school clubs and programs.

He said he will be in isolation at his home for 14 days.

“To those politicians who decide to cave in to this coronavirus, they need to understand the consequences of their cowardly act.”

Pennsylvania health officials have reported the lowest daily increase in coronavirus cases since the end of March.

The AHL Board of Governors officially canceled the remainder of the 2019-20 season.

Schuylkill County says it will let businesses start to open on May 15, and in Berks County, commissioners are working on a reopening plan as well.

“We just don’t think that one person should have the right to close down the whole state.”

“Like many local small businesses, our operations have been absolutely devastated by COVID-19.”

Ranging in age from 96 to 100, the veterans held their salute as President Donald Trump joined them in a commemoration at the World War II Memorial.

His tour is now scheduled for February and March 2021.

Health officials also reported 200 more deaths from the past few weeks, as they continue gathering data from various sources.

Forks Township could see a 10-20% loss in revenue because of the closures under the pandemic.

Located in a primarily rural swath of northern Pennsylvania, the counties have only been lightly impacted by the pandemic.

The community pool season in Northampton Borough is still uncertain as officials wait to see when the Lehigh Valley may reopen in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think life as we know it is over. I think we will have to learn to adjust differently.”

Murphy didn’t say Thursday which facilities the troops would go to or what exactly they’d be doing, but he said the nurses and other staff need “some relief from the bullpen.”

Less than a week ago, an ailment the New York Times called “baffling” took the lives of three children. More cases of the syndrome, which doctors believe is related to the COVID-19 pandemic, have been popping up in children around the United States and in Europe.

The Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Reilly Children’s Hospital has now treated three children, all of whom are recovering, for the ailment and is bracing for the possibility of treating more. Reilly is the Lehigh Valley’s only children’s hospital.

The hospital sent out a news release on Thursday night stating that it was monitoring the incidence of “pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome” (PMIS) both regionally and internationally and is “prepared to care for children with the illness.”

PMIS causes inflammation in organ systems, as well as other systems, including skin rashes. It appears to be connected to the coronavirus, as New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said all of the 73 children admitted to New York hospitals with the syndrome tested positive for COVID-19 or its antibodies, the Times reported.

“’Pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome is both rare and treatable,”’ Dr J. Nathan Hagstrom, chair of department of pediatrics, said in the release.

LVHN’ says treatment entails a steroid medication given to patients as well as a common IV medication (IVIG) used to treat inflammation with an autoimmune disease. “The majority of patients recover with no long-lasting effects and the percentage of children who die from the syndrome is very low,”’ Hagstrom said.

Symptoms of PMIS include: persistent fever; abdominal pain, diarrhea or vomiting; skin rash or changes in skin color; difficulty breathing; confusion; and both eyes appearing red.

The three children with the syndrome have already been treated at the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit and the pediatric inpatient unit, and they’re recovering, according to the hospital.

In the nearly 26,000 tests ordered for LVHN, less than 1% of children tested have had tested positive for the coronavirus.
