]]>The primary “source” of the anti-Trump dossier authored by ex-British intelligence agent Christopher Steele was the subject of an FBI counterintelligence investigation from 2009 to 2011 for suspected contact with Russian intelligence officers, Fox News has learned.
Attorney General Bill Barr penned a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on Thursday responding to requests as part of the panel’s review into the origins of the Russia probe.
“In connection with your Committee’s investigation of these matters and ongoing hearings, you have been asking us to accelerate this process and to provide any additional information relating to the reliability of the work of Christopher Steele and the so-called ‘Steele dossier,’ as long as its release would not compromise U.S. Attorney John Durham’s ongoing criminal investigation,” Barr wrote.
“A footnote in the Inspector General’s report contains information, which up till now has been classified and redacted, bearing on the reliability of the Steele dossier,” Barr wrote. “The FBI has declassified the relevant portion of the footnote, number 334, which states that ‘the Primary Sub-source was the subject of an FBI counterintelligence investigation from 2009 to 2011 that assessed his or her contacts with suspected Russian intelligence officers.'”
Barr added that at his request, the FBI has prepared a declassified summary of certain information from the counterintelligence investigation into the source, which he has shared with the committee.
“I have consulted with Mr. Durham, who originally brought this information to my attention in the course of his investigation, and he has informed me that the disclosure of the information will not interfere with his criminal investigation,” Barr wrote, adding that he alerted Director of National Inteligence John Ratcliffe to “certain classified information in possession of the intelligence community” which “bears upon the FBI’s knowledge of the reliability of the dossier.”
“Mr. Durham confirms that the disclosure of that information would not interfere with his investigaiton, and the Department otherwise defers to the DNI concerning the handling of this information,” Barr said.
Durham was appointed by Attorney General Barr last year to investigate the origins of the FBI’s Russia probe shortly after Special Counsel Robert Mueller completed his years-long investigation into whether the campaign colluded with the Russians to influence the 2016 presidential election.

Steele authored and compiled information for the controversial and unverified anti-Trump dossier on behalf of Fusion GPS — the firm that was hired to conduct opposition research funded by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign through law firm Perkins Coie.
The dossier contains claims about alleged ties between Donald Trump and Russia that served as the basis for Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants obtained against former Trump campaign aide Carter Page.

Meanwhile, Fox News reported in July that the primary source of Steele’s election reporting was not a current or former Russian official, but a non-Russian based contract employee of Steele’s firm. Fox News also reported in July that the information the source provided Steele that served as the basis of the dossier was “second and third-hand information and rumors at best.”
The committee earlier this summer released a declassified summary of a three-day interview with the source.
The source, according to the committee, told the FBI in interviews in January and March of 2017 that the information contained in the anti-Trump dossier was unreliable.

The document revealed that the dossier was “unsubstantiated and unreliable,” according to sources who reviewed it, and showed that the FBI was on notice of the dossier’s credibility problems, yet continued to seek further FISA warrants renewals for Page.
The document also revealed that Steele’s primary sub-source “disagreed with and was surprised by” how information he gave Steele was then conveyed by Steele in the dossier.
For instance, the source told the FBI he “did not recall” where some of the information attributed to him or his sources came from; was never told about or mentioned to Steele certain information attributed to him or his sources; said that Steele “re-characterized” some of the information to make it more substantiated and “less attenuated” than it really was; and that he would have described some of his sources differently.
The source also told the FBI, according to committee sources, that Steele “implied direct access to information where the access to information was indirect.”
Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz revealed last year in its review of alleged abuses of the FISA system that there were at least 17 “significant inaccuracies and omissions” in the Page FISA applications. Horowitz also found that the applications also omitted information regarding the reliability of one of Steele’s key “sub-sources.”
Horowitz added in his report that the key Steele “sub-source” raised questions about the reliability of Steele’s reporting, which was omitted.

But Steele’s attorneys, who also represent Orbis Business Intelligence where Steele worked, fired back, complaining they were “never given an opportunity to respond to the claims” regarding the sub-source.
Horowitz said that the FBI “failed to notify” the Office of Investigations, which was working on the Page FISA applications, “of potentially serious problems identified with Steele’s election reporting that arose as early as January 2017.”
In addition to the lack of corroboration of allegations contained in the dossier, Horowitz found that the FBI’s interviews of Steele and his sub-sources “revealed potentially serious problems with Steele’s description of information in his election reports.”
Meanwhile, last month, Ratcliffe transmitted a declassified footnote of the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) on Russian election interference to Capitol Hill, which noted that Steele had only “limited corroboration” and that he used “identified and unidentified sub-sources” which volunteered “highly politically sensitive information from the summer to the fall of 2016 on Russian influence efforts aimed at the presidential election.”
“We have only limited corroboration of the source’s reporting in this case and did not use it to reach the analytic conclusions of the CIA/FBI/NSA assessment,” the declassified annex stated.

But the annex noted that Steele’s reporting was “not developed by the layered subsource network.”
“The FBI source caveated that, although similar to previously provided reporting in terms of content, the source was unable to vouch for the additional information’s sourcing and accuracy,” the annex stated. “Hence this information is not included in this product.”
Another footnote, which was previously redacted in its entirety, further raised doubt on the credibility of Steele’s main sources.
“When interviewed by the FBI, the Primary Sub-source stated that he/she did not view his/her contacts as a network of sources, [REDACTED] with whom he/she has conversations about current events and government relations,” one of the previously hidden footnotes reads.
Horowitz, though, had asserted that Steele’s primary sub-source “used his/her network of sub-sources to gather information that was then passed to Steele.”

]]>The primary source for Christopher Steele’s unverified dossier has been revealed as a United States resident who once co-wrote a research paper showing Russian President Vladimir Putin plagiarized his dissertation.
A lawyer for Igor Danchenko, 42, confirmed to The New York Times that his client — a former Brookings Institution senior research analyst in Washington, D.C., and not a “Russian-based” source — provided the information to Steele, the British former spy whose dossier was used by the FBI to obtain wiretaps of Carter Page, the former Trump campaign adviser.

“Igor Danchenko has been identified as one of the sources who provided data and analysis [to Steele],” Mark E. Schamel told the paper.
The FBI knew who Danchenko was and interviewed him in 2017 about the information he provided for the Steele dossier that purported to show Trump campaign ties to the Russian government. Danchenko cooperated on the condition the FBI keep his identity secret so he could protect himself, the paper reported.

But that all changed when Attorney General William Barr directed the FBI declassify the report about its three-day interview of Danchenko and turn it over to Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., whose Judiciary Committee has been investigating the origins of the Russia probe. Graham wanted the interview out because it further undercuts the credibility of the Steele dossier, he said.
Graham released the declassified documents July 17 that had redacted Danchenko’s name and identifying information, but an online blog post titled “I Found the Primary Subsource” pieced together clues and identified Danchekno. RT, a Kremlin-owned news site, then published an article also outing Danchenko’s name.
Danchenko was born in Ukraine and is a Russian-trained lawyer who earned degrees at the University of Louisville and Georgetown University, the Times reported. He’s specialized in Russia and Eurasia research, analysis and consulting work in the Washington DC area, according to LinkedIn. For five years until 2010, he worked at the Brookings Institution where he obtained Putin’s dissertation and documented evidence of plagiarism.
Danchenko’s identity further raises questions about the FBI renewing a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant against Page. In the last two renewal applications to the FISA court, the FBI referred to the primary sub-source of the document as “truthful and cooperative” and “Russian-based,” the Justice Department Inspector General report found.

But Danchenko lives in the United States, though he visited Moscow to gather information on Steele’s behalf, the Times reported.
Before Danchenko’s identity was revealed, Graham said the FBI interview with the primary source already cast serious doubt on the credibility of the Steele’s information.
The document revealed that the primary “source” of Steele’s election reporting was not a well-connected current or former Russian official, but a non-Russian-based contract employee of Steele’s firm, according to Graham’s Judiciary committee.
Moreover, the document demonstrated that the information Steele’s primary sub-source provided him was “second and third-hand information and rumors at best,” the committee said last week.
But Danchenko’s lawyer said his client did nothing wrong in accepting a paid assignment to gather allegations about Trump’s ties to Russia for Steele’s research firm, Orbis Business Intelligence.
“Mr. Danchenko is a highly respected senior research analyst; he is neither an author nor editor for any of the final reports produced by Orbis,” Schamel told The Times. “Mr. Danchenko stands by his data analysis and research and will leave it to others to evaluate and interpret any broader story with regard to Orbis’s final report.”

]]>EXCLUSIVE: A newly declassified document obtained by Fox News reveals that the FBI agent who delivered the defensive briefing on election interference to the Trump campaign in August 2016 “actively listened” for certain topics – using it as a “cover” to monitor then-candidate Donald Trump and Michael Flynn, a source familiar with the document said.
The document, obtained by Fox News, was declassified by Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe and transmitted to Capitol Hill.
The document reflects type-written notes by FBI agent Joe Pientka after an August 17, 2016 briefing to then-candidate Donald Trump, Michael Flynn and Chris Christie, “in support of ODNI briefings provided to U.S. Presidential candidates and two of their advisors.”
The briefing, which was held at the FBI’s New York Field Office, also included a “13- minute defensive briefing” delivered by Pientka. The ODNI briefer was Edward Gistaro, according to the document.

The document was dated August 30, 2016, and filed under “Crossfire Hurricane,” the FBI’s code name for its investigation into whether the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russians to influence the 2016 election; “Crossfire Razor,” the FBI’s code name for the investigation into Michael Flynn; “Russia Sensitive Investigative Matter,” and FARA, the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
The document states that FBI officials Kevin Clinesmith and Peter Strzok “approved” Pientka’s notes.
The source told Fox News that Pientka, at the time of the briefing, was also tasked with running the FBI’s investigation into Flynn.
The source went on to tell Fox News that the briefing was used as “a cover to listen for any remarks” by Trump or others about the Russian federation.
During the briefing, the source told Fox News that Trump asked Pientka: “Joe, are the Russians bad? Because they have more numbers are they worse than the Chinese?”
Pientka, according to the notes, responded by saying: “Both countries are bad.”
The source told Fox News that it was Pientka’s duty to “warn and tell the candidate what they needed to watch out for,” but that he did not implicitly warn that the “Russians were targeting the campaign.”
“During the ODNI briefs, writer actively listened for topics or questions regarding the Russian Federation,” Pientka wrote in his notes.
According to the notes, the ODNI briefer said the U.S. “is the world leader in Counterterrorism.”
“Trump then asked, ‘Russia too?'” Pientka wrote. “During a discussion regarding nuclear testing, Russia and China were brought up as cheating on the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Trump asked, ‘Who’s worse?’ [REDACTED] stated ‘they are both bad, but Russia is worse.'”
The notes added: “Trump and Christie turned toward each other and Christie commented, ‘I’m shocked.'”
Meanwhile, according to the source and the document, Pientka’s case file was “approved” by Clinesmith and Strzok.
A senior administration official told Fox News Thursday that the newly-declassifed document “shows the same cast of virulent characters that spearheaded the Russia hoax, set Trump up from jump.”
“Clinesmith, the FISA forger and his trusted sidekick, Strzok, attempted to make good on their promise to prevent Trump from winning,” the official told Fox News. “A scam briefing from a scam crew of miscreants at the FBI.”
Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz last year found that Clinesmith altered an email to say that former Trump campaign aide Carter Page had not been a CIA source, when in fact he had been working with them. This ultimately led to the FBI renewing a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant against Page while leaving exculpatory evidence out of their application.
Pientka participated in the January 2017 White House interview that led to Flynn’s prosecution.
Fox News has previously determined that Pientka was also intimately involved in the probe of former Trump aide Carter Page, which the DOJ has since acknowledged was riddled with fundamental errors and premised on a discredited dossier that the bureau was told could be part of a Russian disinformation campaign.
Meanwhile, Fox News also obtained a newly-declassified document which appeared to be Pientka’s oultine for the briefing with the Trump team, dated August 17, 2016, and also labeled “Crossfire Hurricane” and “Outline used during Trump brief on 8/17/16.”
The document outlined topic Pientka briefed the Trump team on, and included hand-written notes in the margins.
The handwritten notes refer to Flynn, during the briefing, asking Pientka “How many Special Agents are in the FBI?” which Pientka replied “over 10,000.”
The initial document stated Flynn replied: “You have 17,000.”
The initial document revealed that Flynn asked Pientka if the Russia threat was “worse now than during the Cold War?”
“Writer responded that the number of identified known and suspected IOs from hostile Foreign Intelligence Services posted in the U.S. are equal to or greater than during the Cold War,” the intial document read.
On the document outlining the guidelines for the briefing, Pientka scribbled notes in the margins, including “Flynn worse than cold war,” and “Flynn 17,000,” among other illegible notes.

]]>DES MOINES, Iowa —
The Polk County Pediatric Medical Collaborative confirmed to KCCI that Iowa has its first confirmed case of Pediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (PMIS).
“A very small portion of children with COVID are the ones who will suffer with this,” said Nivedita Krishnan, the medical director of the pediatric urgent care at MercyOne Des Moines.
Dr. Moshe Arditi, pediatric infectious disease expert at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA, said PMIS symptoms include persistent fever, inflammation and poor functions in organs such as the kidneys or heart. Arditi said children may also show evidence of blood vessel inflammation such as red eyes, a bright red tongue and red cracked lips.
The Collaborative said it was informed Friday afternoon of a positive case of PMIS in eastern Iowa.
PMIS is rare, but can be deadly. Doctors said the syndrome seems to develop week after a child was possibly infected with COVID-19.
“Basically, there is an inciting infection that then triggers the body to release an entire system inflammatory response,” Krishnan said.
The new disease is similar to Kawasaki and Toxic Shock syndrome. Doctors said the infection can lead to inflammation of the heart muscle and arteries.
“The fever will be the biggest giveaway,” Krishnan said.
She hasn’t seen a case of PMIS yet, but has tested nearly 100 children for COVID-19. So far, she’s had about 12 test positive for COVID-19, the youngest being 20-months-old.
“If your child has a fever for more than 48 to 72 hours, bring them to be seen,” Krishnan said.
The state has not confirmed the case.
