]]>It’s not expected to happen anytime soon, but one scientist has calculated when the universe will end.
The research, published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, notes that sometime over the “next few trillion years,” when the universe is dead as we know it, stars will continue to explode, not with a giant bang, but “very, very slowly fizzle.”
“It [the universe] will be a bit of a sad, lonely, cold place,” the study’s lead author, theoretical physicist Matt Caplan, said in a statement. “It’s known as ‘heat death,’ where the universe will be mostly black holes and burned-out stars.”

In the research, Caplan looked at potential stellar explosions and found that white dwarfs will explode in a supernova in the future. As they become denser, these stars will become “black dwarf” stars capable of producing iron in their cores.
“Stars less than about 10 times the mass of the sun do not have the gravity or density to produce iron in their cores the way massive stars do, so they can’t explode in a supernova right now,” Caplan explained. “As white dwarfs cool down over the next few trillion years, they’ll grow dimmer, eventually freeze solid, and become ‘black dwarf’ stars that no longer shine.”
Since iron can’t be burned, it will accumulate, similar to a poison, and trigger the collapse of the star and become a supernova. Caplan estimates the first one of these theoretical explosions will happen in about 10 to the power 1100 years. “In years, it’s like saying the word ‘trillion’ almost a hundred times. If you wrote it out, it would take up most of a page,” Caplan added. “It’s mindbogglingly far in the future.”
Nonetheless, all the stars that turn into black dwarfs will not explode, just those that are between 1.2 and 1.4 times the mass of the sun, or approximately 1% of all stars that currently exist, Caplan pointed out.

The other approximately 99% of stars will remain black dwarfs.
The largest black dwarfs will go supernova first, followed by smaller ones, at which time the universe will likely be a giant emptiness, completely unrecognizable.
“It’s hard to imagine anything coming after that, black dwarf supernova might be the last interesting thing to happen in the universe,” Caplain stated. “They may be the last supernova ever. Galaxies will have dispersed, black holes will have evaporated, and the expansion of the universe will have pulled all remaining objects so far apart that none will ever see any of the others explode. It won’t even be physically possible for light to travel that far.”
Researchers continue to learn more about the state of the universe. In July, a separate group of experts suggested the universe could be as much as 1.2 billion years younger than the 13.8 billion years old it is widely assumed to be.

The married coronavirus researcher killed in a suspected murder-suicide in Pennsylvania was gunned down over “a lengthy dispute” about an “intimate partner,” police revealed Wednesday.
A probe into the deaths of University of Pittsburgh scientist Bing Liu, 37, and Hao Gu, 46, found the pair was squabbling about a mystery companion whom Ross Township police would not identify.
“We found zero evidence that this tragic event has anything to do with employment at the University of Pittsburgh, any work being conducted at the University of Pittsburgh and the current heath crisis affecting the United States and the world,” the statement read.
Investigators forwarded their review of the case to federal authorities since the “individuals involved” are not US citizens, police said.
Detectives have previously said that Liu — a native of China — and Gu knew each other, but evidence showed the shooting had nothing to do with the assistant professor’s ongoing COVID-19 research.
Liu was found Saturday shot several times in the head, neck and torso in his Ross townhouse. Police believe Gu, of Pittsburgh, then got into his car parked about 100 yards away and killed himself, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Nothing was stolen from the home, police said, and Liu’s wife was not home during the slaying.
Liu, an assistant professor in Pitt medical school’s department of computational and systems biology, and his wife, who had no children, largely kept to themselves, neighbors told the newspaper.
Dr. Ivet Bahar, head of the computational and system biology department at Pitt’s School of Medicine, said Liu was an accomplished academic making significant strides on a coronavirus research project focusing on the bug’s infection mechanism.
“He has been contributing to several scientific projects, publishing in high-profile journals,” Bahar told the Post-Gazette. “He was someone whom we all liked very much, a very gentle, very helpful, kind person, very generous. We are all shocked to learn what happened to him. This was very unexpected.”

]]>A University of Pittsburgh researcher on the cusp of making “very significant findings” about the novel coronavirus was killed over the weekend in what authorities say was a murder-suicide.
Bing Liu, 37, was shot multiple times in his townhouse around noon Saturday in Ross Township, Pa., police told WTAE, an ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh.
As a research assistant professor, Liu focused on using computational models to study biological processes. He was working from home during the pandemic and studying the virus, his supervisor said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Officials told the newspaper Liu was shot by another man and suffered gunshot wounds to the head, neck, torso and extremities. The man, later identified as 46-year-old Hao Gu, then got into his car about 100 yards away and killed himself.
Neighbors told the paper they didn’t hear any gunshots the day Liu was killed.
The front and rear patio doors of Liu’s home were open at the time of his death because of the springtime weather, the Post-Gazette reported. His wife wasn’t home at that time.
No items were stolen from the home, according to the paper.
Ross Township Detective Brian Kohlhepp told WTAE that police don’t believe the relationship between the two men had anything to do with Liu’s research on the coronavirus.
It is unclear how the two men knew each other, and police are investigating whether there was any confrontation before the shooting. A possible motive for the murder also is unclear, the Post-Gazette reported.
In a statement, Liu’s department at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine called him a prolific researcher and generous mentor. Shortly before his death, he had begun researching the cellular mechanisms that underlie coronavirus infections and the cellular basis of ensuing complications.
Ivet Bahar, his supervisor and the head of his department, told the Post-Gazette Liu had just started to receive interesting results.
Bahar had sent several emails to Liu over the weekend about his work and was surprised that the normally prompt researcher wasn’t responding, according to the Post-Gazette.
After a conversation with a colleague about the crime, she confirmed Liu was the victim, the paper reported. He had not expressed any fear for his life to her, she told the paper.
“We will make an effort to complete what he started in an effort to pay homage to his scientific excellence,” the statement said.
Liu and his wife had no children and mostly kept to themselves, neighbors told the Post-Gazette.
Liu received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from the National University of Singapore, according to his professional website. He had previously worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the department of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University and with Bahar as a research associate in the department of computational and systems biology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Throughout his career, he published more than 30 academic papers and wrote a book.

EXCLUSIVE: Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, who is described by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as the “lead” member of the U.S. government team racing to find a coronavirus vaccine, has engaged with online theories calling the pandemic a black “genocide” and condemned what she called “systematic oppression” by white people, a review of her social media posts by “Tucker Carlson Tonight” reveals.
Corbett has also reposted a tweet urging Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and Dr. Jerome Adams, the surgeon general, to “check” their “privilege.”
Late Friday, a senior Health and Human Services (HHS) official told Fox News: “HHS career ethics officials are reviewing the matter.” Fox News is told the inquiry is being taken “very seriously,” as making unprofessional social media posts about sensitive government work can violate federal ethical guidelines.
Corbett, 34, is an immunologist with the Vaccine Research Center, a division of NIAID. In her social media posts, first reported Friday by “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Corbett adopts a strikingly casual and conspiratorial tone. Her Twitter biography reads: “Virology. Vaccinology. Vagina-ology. Vino-ology. My tweets are my own. My science is the world’s.”
On March 29, Corbett tweeted out a Bloomberg article about how the poor are dying at higher rates from coronavirus. In her tweet, she said that doctors would deliberately choose to deny ventilators to black Americans, leaving them to die instead.
“I tweet for the people who will die when doctors has [sic] to choose who gets the last ventilator and ultimately… who lives,” Corbett wrote. “The poor. And, while the article doesn’t explicitly say it… the black.”

Someone replied to Corbett on April 9: “It’s so scary to think about. I know when it comes down to it people will be turned away or left to die because they are black.” Corbett replied that same day: “Yep. Both.”
Another user declared, “They hate us. This virus is a sure fire way to get rid of us without having to lift a finger.” Corbett replied: “Some have gone as far to call it genocide. I plead the fifth.”
On April 11, Corbett implied black people are “doomed.”
“I am praying that policies reflect this is [sic] multiple ways,” she wrote, referring to addressing systemic racism. “They must or we will be doomed in the next pandemic(s) too.”
Adams, the surgeon general, told a press conference last week that black Americans suffer more from obesity, diabetes, and other ailments that increase the risk of death from coronavirus.
After Adams recommended that black Americans avoid cigarettes and alcohol to project their health during the epidemic, Corbett retweeted another user’s thread saying the suggestion was “offensive because they ignore systemic racism.” That thread ended by saying, “Dr. Fauci and Dr. Adams, check your privilege. Think critically. Stop spreading harmful fallacies that support white supremacy.”
Corbett herself commented, “Pasting this thread here because it’s appropriately put. Black people are not dying more because of their behaviors. That is just a cop out to adjust accountability.”

And, in a Twitter argument last week, Corbett said that “Merit [is] defined by prejudices.” Another user responded, “So can we just dismiss anything white men are involved in because they’re intrinsically malevolent?”
Corbett’s response: “White men are not be dismissed. But the systems that they (ancestor or current) curated are.”
When the poster asked Corbett if she was advancing an “immoral” notion, she replied: “No. Not at all. Nothing is immoral about dismantling systematic oppression.”
In the meantime, some of Corbett’s other posts suggested that she was enjoying her role to an unusual degree.
“What’s better than bomb data emailed (at 5: 30 pm) by team members fully graphed in beautiful color schemes and clear labeling???” she wrote on Thursday. “I’ll wait…”
On March 20, she wrote: “Last yr, I took *17trips (weekends domestically & other); this year, I have cancelled bucket list vacations (Netherlands, Spain, Jamaica, Greece). This the reason ‘millennials’ should be fighting for research funding for future pandemics… We deserve to be in dese streetz!”
On March 19, Corbett seemingly attempted to explain her tone on Twitter. “I decided to take matters into my own hands when I saw the people being left out of the direction and the press and the… you get the point,” she wrote. “So… here I am ‘COVID-19,’ but make it fashion.”
In an interview earlier this month with CNN, which called Corbett “NIH’s lead scientists for coronavirus vaccine research,” Corbett told Anderson Cooper and Dr. Sanjay Gupta that “several of our previous projects” — including MERS and SARS research — informed the government’s ongoing coronavirus vaccine research.
In general terms, Corbett told the hosts that a specific protein would play a key role in the vaccine efforts. She also said that vaccine “rapid response” had improved in recent years, in part because “we’ve researched coronavirus vaccine development for the last 7 years, particularly under my direction, the team has researched this coronavirus development for 5 years.”

Various other media outlets — including The New York Times and Fox News — have previously covered Corbett’s role as the lead coronavirus researcher.
Fox News reported earlier this week that Corbett has long been called a superstar scientist. She got a full scholarship to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she majored in biology and sociology.
She received a doctorate from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill in 2014 and joined the NIH’s Vaccine Research Center as a postdoctoral fellow the same year.
