Scientists have found associations between fungi living in the gut and mild cognitive impairment, which can lead to Alzheimer’s disease. They suggest that a ketogenic diet could help prevent the disease by creating a more healthful balance of microorganisms in the gut.

Alzheimer’s Association report that 15–20% of people over 65 experience mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which involves a decline in memory and the ability to think clearly.

Doctors do not consider MCI to be a form of dementia because people who have it are able to function relatively well and live independently. However, MCI is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia later in life.

Developing preventive strategies that can be initiated early is therefore a priority. But despite decades of research, no therapies have been shown to reverse or prevent the brain changes seen in Alzheimer’s.

One potential strategy that scientists have begun to explore involves modifying the diet to influence the microbial communities in the gut.

There is an intimate relationship between the gut microbiome and the central nervous system, with recent research suggesting associations between particular bacterial communities and neurological disorders, including MCI, dementia, and Alzheimer’s.

In one recent study, scientists at the Wake Forest School of Medicine, in Winston-Salem, NC, found a distinctive gut bacterial “signature” in people with MCI.

They also discovered that a diet called the modified Mediterranean-style ketogenic diet altered bacterial communities in the guts of volunteers and reduced biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease in the cerebrospinal fluid of those with MCI.

This diet contains a limited number of carbohydrates and increased amounts of fats. These are primarily mono- and polyunsaturated fats that come from olive oil and fish.

A ketogenic, or “keto”, diet contains very few carbohydrates, which the body uses as fuel. When short on carbs, the body starts to break down its fat reserves to produce molecules called ketones, as an alternative source of energy.

The same group of researchers now reports similar associations between the communities of fungi in the gut — collectively called the mycobiome — the person’s diet, and their risk of MCI.

They report their findings in the latest issue of the journal EBioMedicine.

“Although we do not fully understand how these fungi contribute to Alzheimer’s disease, this is the first study of its kind to reveal their role in our mental health, which we hope will ignite thinking in the scientific community to develop better understanding of them in relation to Alzheimer’s disease,” says principal investigator Hariom Yadav, Ph.D., an assistant professor of molecular medicine at Wake Forest.

“It also indicates that dietary habits such as eating a ketogenic diet can reduce harmful fungi in the gut, which might help in reducing Alzheimer’s disease processes in the brain,” he explains.

The researchers randomly assigned 17 older adults to eat either a Mediterranean-style ketogenic diet (MMKD) for 6 weeks or the American Heart Association diet, which is relatively low in fat and high in carbohydrates.

Eleven of the participants had MCI and six had no cognitive issues. Their average age was 65 years.

The team provided each participant assigned to the MMKD with 2 liters of extra virgin olive oil and encouraged them to eat fish, lean meats, and nutrient-rich foods.

After a 6-week “washout” period during which the participants maintained their regular diets, they switched to their study-assigned diets for 6 weeks.

The scientists monitored changes in the participants’ mycobiomes by analyzing fecal samples and changes in Alzheimer’s biomarkers by assessing samples of cerebrospinal fluid.

At the start of the study, the mycobiomes of participants with MCI had a distinctive signature, containing more of certain types of fungi and fewer of others, compared with those of the other participants.

As expected, MCI was associated with a high-risk profile of Alzheimer’s biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid. In keeping with previous findings, following an MMKD appeared to improve this risk profile.

Interestingly, individuals with MCI initially had less fungal diversity in their guts, compared with the healthy participants, but eating an MMKD seemed to restore the diversity.

The researchers note that changes in the populations of gut bacteria of individuals with MCI who ate an MMKD — which they had reported in their previous study — may have had knock-on effects on the fungi.

Some species of bacteria produce substances known to suppress the growth of certain fungi. The authors report that this may explain why eating an MMKD suppressed a genus of fungi called Candida in the guts of participants with MCI.

Candida has been implicated in a range of inflammatory diseases of the gut, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Inflammation is now believed to play an important role in Alzheimer’s disease, as well. By suppressing Candida and reducing inflammation, say the researchers, eating an MMKD may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s.

The authors acknowledge that their study had some key limitations. First, while the researchers advised people to eat certain diets, they did not monitor the participants for this.

It was also a pilot study with a small sample size, making it impossible to account for other variables that might affect Alzheimer’s risk and the population of the gut’s microorganisms, such as lifestyle, gender, and ethnicity.

Moreover, the unique signature of gut fungi and bacteria found in individuals with MCI may be a result of the health issue, rather than one of its causes.

Finally, the changes in the mycobiome observed in the participants assigned the keto diet may have been transient, resulting from fungi in the food.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, may help reduce the cytokine storm and excessive lung inflammation that is killing many patients with COVID-19, researchers say.

While more work, including clinical trials to determine optimal dosage and timing, is needed before CBD becomes part of the treatment for COVID-19, researchers at the Dental College of Georgia and Medical College of Georgia have early evidence it could help patients showing signs of respiratory distress avoid extreme interventions like mechanical ventilation as well as death from acute respiratory distress syndrome.

“ARDS is a major killer in severe cases of some respiratory viral infections, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and we have an urgent need for better intervention and treatment strategies,” says Dr. Babak Baban, immunologist and interim associate dean for research at DCG and corresponding author of the study in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research.

Our laboratory studies indicate pure CBD can help the lungs recover from the overwhelming inflammation, or cytokine storm, caused by the COVID-19 virus, and restore healthier oxygen levels in the body, says co-author Dr. Jack Yu, physician-scientist and chief of pediatric plastic surgery at MCG.

Their CBD findings were enabled by their additional finding of a safe and relatively inexpensive model to duplicate the lung damage caused by ARDS. Work on the virus itself is limited to a handful of labs in the nation that can safely manage the highly contagious virus, and their newly reported approach opens more doors for studying SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19 and similar virus-induced conditions, they say.

Their model, which takes advantage of the large, unique genetic structure of the novel coronavirus, produced classic symptoms of ARDS like the overwhelming, destructive immune response, then CBD significantly downregulated classic indicators of the excess, like inflammation-promoting cytokines as it improved oxygen levels in the blood and enabled the lungs to recover from the structural damage.

A major problem with SARS-CoV-2 is instead of just killing the virus, the over-the-top immune response can quickly disable the lungs, transforming them to a place where virus is replicated, rather than a place that makes oxygen available for our bodies and eliminates potentially harmful gases like carbon dioxide.

Mechanical ventilators can take over these vital functions for a while, and enable critically ill people to use less energy to just breathe and have more energy to fight infection, while ideally the lungs recover from the assault. However evidence suggests 30-50% of patients who get to the point of mechanical ventilation, don’t survive.

The cytokines in these now famous “storms” are a class of molecules like interferon and interleukin, secreted by immune cells and other cells like endothelial cells that line blood vessels, which impact cell communication and can both promote and deter inflammation. In the case of COVID-19, there is excessive production of inflammation-promoting molecules like the interleukins IL-6 and IL-1β, as well as immune cells like neutrophils and monocytes, the researchers say.

They looked at objective measures of lung function in mice like levels of proinflammatory cytokines, oxygen levels in the blood before and after treatment, as well as temperature, an indicator of inflammation. Oxygen levels went up, while temperatures and cytokine levels went down with CBD therapy. Days later, a more detailed analysis of the lungs, reinforced reduction of key indicators of destructive inflammation, which their model, like the virus, drove way up including reduced levels of IL-6 and infiltrating neutrophils.

In fact, both clinical symptoms and physical lung changes resulting from ARDS were reversed with CBD treatment, they say.

Their model was created with the help of a synthetic analog of double-stranded RNA called POLY (I:C). In humans, our double-stranded DNA contains our genetic information and our single-stranded RNA carries out the instruction of our DNA to make certain proteins. In the family of coronaviruses, the double-stranded RNA carries the genetic material needed to reproduce the viruses and hijacks the cell machinery of our body to do that, Baban says.

“The natural instinct of the virus is to make more of itself,” Baban says. “It weaves with our DNA to make the cell produce food and everything it needs.” Viruses also tend to have a tissue or tissues they prefer — some can and do go anywhere — and for SARS-CoV-2, the lungs are high on the list, he says.

Our bodies aren’t used to this double-stranded RNA so, like the virus, POLY (I:C) gets the immediate and extreme attention of toll-like receptor 3, a family of receptors that help our body recognize invaders like a virus and activate our frontline, innate immune response.

“The toll-like receptors 3 see this and just go nuts,” Yu says. The fact that the coronaviruses are literally big and have the largest known viral RNA genome make such a vigorous cytokine and immune response both plausible and probable, adds Baban.

Mice received three, once-a-day doses of POLY (I:C) in the nasal passageway. CBD was given by a shot in the abdomen, the first dose two hours after the second POLY (I:C) treatment, then every other day for a total of three days in a process that sought to mimic mice getting treatment about the time a human would begin to experience trouble breathing and likely seek medical care. Given too early, CBD might actually interfere with a proper immune response against the virus, Yu says.

CBD quickly improved the clinical symptoms, then later detailed studies of the lungs showed damage to their structure, like tissue overgrowth, scarring and swelling, also had totally or partially resolved. Their next steps include doing similar studies on other organs impacted by COVID-19 including the gut, heart and brain, Baban says.

At least one way CBD is thought to calm the immune response is because it looks similar to endocannabinoids, a natural cell signaling system in our bodies believed to be involved in a wide variety of functions from sleep to reproduction to inflammation and immune response. CB1 and CB2, the main receptors for this system, are found extensively throughout the body including the brain and respiratory system, where we breathe in manmade and natural irritants in the air — as well as viruses and bacteria — that might inflame. While understanding the workings of the natural endocannabinoid system is still very much a work in progress, it’s thought that one way CBD works to reduce seizures, for example, is indirectly through the large number of CB1 receptors in the brain, says Yu.

CBD is available without a prescription, and is used to treat problems like seizures as well as Parkinson’s, Crohn’s and other conditions where pain and/or inflammation are a major factor. It’s derived from the hemp and cannabis plant, which are essentially the same although hemp has a much lower concentration of the “high” producing THC. Other investigators have shown the calming effect of CBD, for example, can block IL-6 in other models of inflammatory disease.

ARDS is a rapid, severe infection of the lungs that results in widespread inflammation, shortness of breath, rapid breathing and the inability to sustain adequate oxygen levels to the body and brain. Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing are some of the early signs of COVID-19. ARDS is a major cause of death in patients who are critically ill for a variety of reasons, including common sepsis.

A new review has found that probiotics, or a combination of prebiotics and probiotics, may help reduce the symptoms of depression.

A new review of the current research on the effects of prebiotics and probiotics on depression and anxiety symptoms has found that probiotics — either alone or in combination with prebiotics — may help reduce a person’s depression symptoms.

However, the review found that prebiotics and probiotics did not have a statistically significant effect on anxiety. Also, prebiotics on their own did not significantly reduce anxiety or depression symptoms.

While noting that current research on the topics remains limited, the authors of the review make the case for further research to investigate these potentially valuable findings.

The paper appears in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression is a mood disorder that lasts for at least 2 weeks and can have a range of symptoms. These can include feeling sad, angry, irritable, worthless, guilty, or helpless. Some people may be uninterested in hobbies and activities, feel tired, find it hard to concentrate, have trouble sleeping, or even feel suicidal.

About 7% of all adults in the United States have had at least one major depressive episode in the past year.

Treatment for depression usually involves medications, talking therapies, or a combination of both.

A variety of factors, whether biological, genetic, environmental, or psychological, can cause depression. Often, a combination of these is likely to be at play.

According to recent research, one factor that may contribute to depression and mental health issues, more generally, is the gut-brain axis.

The gut-brain axis describes the relationship between a person’s gut microbiome — the ecosystem of microorganisms that live in a person’s gut — and their central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord.

Signals can pass between a person’s gut microbiome and their CNS, keeping both functioning properly.

As a consequence, experts have speculated that the health of the gut microbiome may affect CNS disorders, including some mental health disorders.

Two key factors in maintaining the health of the gut microbiome are prebiotics and probiotics.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, probiotics contain living microorganisms that contribute to a person’s microbiome, whereas prebiotics help maintain the health of these microorganisms.

People can typically find probiotics in fermented foods or yogurt. Prebiotics are present in various plants in low quantities, and they require synthesizing to have a clinically measurable effect.

In this context, the authors of the review article wanted to see the evidence from current research on the possible benefits of taking prebiotics and probiotics for alleviating the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

To conduct their review, the authors searched for English-language studies published between 2003 and 2019.

The studies needed to include human participants who were 18 years of age or older, had clinically recognized anxiety or depression, and had received a dietary prebiotic or probiotic intervention. These criteria left seven studies for the review.

The authors found that although the studies were significantly different, making it difficult to compare them directly, they all clearly demonstrated a positive benefit of a dietary probiotic intervention for the reduction of symptoms of depression.

All of the studies used capsules containing either one or several probiotic strains. The doses varied between 2 and 20 billion colony forming units (CFUs). A 100 gram (g)-portion of live yogurt, which typically contains 100 million microbes per g, would have 10 billion probiotic bacteria. The same amount would be present in 10 g of kimchi, which typically contains about 1 billion microbes per g.

The seven studies looked at 12 different strains of bacteria from the Firmicutes and Actinobacteria category (or phyla) of probiotics. The tablets included various species of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria. Eleven of the 12 strains of bacteria were associated with improvements in measures of depression, either alone or in combination with other probiotic bacteria.

L. plantarum 299v was the only tested probiotic that showed no impact on depression scores, but it did affect tests of cognition. This species of bacteria is common in kimchi.

The studies also found that a combination of prebiotic and probiotic interventions was beneficial. However, prebiotics on their own did not have any significant effect.

While probiotic or combination prebiotic and probiotic interventions effectively reduced the symptoms of depression, the authors found little evidence for them reducing the symptoms of anxiety.

The authors stress that the research as it stands is limited. As well as there being significant differences among the included studies in terms of their methods, aims, and scope, the studies were relatively small and had very short follow-up times. Therefore, drawing definitive conclusions from them is difficult.

However, the initial evidence seems promising and makes clear that future research exploring the relationship between the gut microbiome and mental health issues may be valuable.

This is particularly the case given that there is evidence that maintaining the health of the gut microbiome can improve chronic health issues that often accompany depression, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The authors point out that if probiotics can potentially improve a person’s depressive symptoms, as well as the accompanying conditions that may be causing them distress, they could potentially have a powerful beneficial effect on a person’s mental health.

The authors of the review recommend that future studies focus on larger cohorts of participants and stretch over a longer period to determine any negative, as well as positive, longer-term effects of prebiotics and probiotics on mental health and general health status.

They also suggest that focusing on particular mental health issues in isolation may help tease apart any differences in effectiveness between prebiotic and probiotic intervention and specific mental health issues.

Nonetheless, based on the current evidence alone, the authors conclude that either a combination prebiotic and probiotic intervention or a probiotic intervention on its own “may offer a quantitatively measurable improvement in parameters relating to depression.”

Before you visit older relatives this summer, plan ahead.

One of the hardest things during this pandemic — for kids and adult children — has been staying away from their parents and grandparents.

People 65 years and older are at higher risk for getting a severe case of COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And about 80% of deaths in the U.S. from COVID-19 have been in people older than 65.

So it’s been especially important for older people to practice social distancing — even from family members — to reduce the risk of infection.

But the summer is here, communities are reopening and with many families living miles apart, a trip to see parents and grandparents is tempting. Here are some things to consider before you go.

Assess the risk

Remember, the risk of getting a coronavirus infection increases with age, says Dr. Ravina Kullar, an epidemiologist and spokesperson for the Infectious Disease Society of America. So the older the parent or grandparent, the higher the risk is. And if your relative has an underlying health condition, like diabetes, lung disease, hypertension, or if they are immunosuppressed, “that puts them at even higher risk,” Kullar says. So before the visit, assess the age and health of the person you are visiting — and consider whether the trip is worth the risk.

Plan ahead, by two weeks

If you decide to make the trip, the two weeks leading up to the visit are key, says says Dr. William Miller, an epidemiologist at Ohio State University College of Public Health. You want to reduce your chance of infection as much as possible. While complete quarantine may not be practical, limit outings or social gatherings, and take maximum precautions when going out. Practice social distancing, wear a mask, and work from home if possible, to reduce your chances of getting infected. Complete quarantine would mean staying entirely home except for necessary medical care.

Another factor to consider is what the infection rates are where you live, says Kullar. You have more risk of infection if you live in a place which is reporting a lot of new cases every day, than if you live in an area where no cases have been reported for several weeks. You can use NPR’s coronavirus tracker to find out how many cases there are in your state.

To find detailed information about your county, check your state’s health department web site — many states publish county-level data, or look up your area in a national tracker like the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care.

If you can, make it a road trip

Traveling by car will be safer than traveling by plane or train, Miller says. The main risks in a road trip are the stops along the way, such as restaurants or public restrooms.

“I would recommend you do anything you can to limit your exposure,” Kullar says. “If you have to fill up the gas tank, put gloves on and use hand sanitizer. Pack your own food so there are no additional stops at restaurants.”

The main risk from restrooms are from those that are small, busy and poorly ventilated — like “those restrooms in a gas station off the highway where the restroom is outside,” Miller says. Try to choose a bathroom that looks clean and is well stocked with supplies. Avoid bunching up in a line, or staying in the restroom long, if you are within 6 feet of others. Wear a mask, wash your hands after you go, and use hand sanitizer if you touch any surfaces after that.

If it’s a long trip and you need to stay overnight in a hotel, “make sure you sanitize everything,” Kullar says. Take disinfectant, wipe down surfaces, limit time spent in indoor public spaces and wear a mask.

Think twice before you fly

“Planes are a major concern,” Miller says, despite the high level of air filtration on most planes. In planes you are exposed to people several rows ahead and behind, for an extended period of time. It can also be hard to social distance as you navigate the airports. Trains and buses likely have similar exposure, Miller says.

If you do take a plane, bus or train, “choose routes that are less populous,” says Dr. Emily Landon, a hospital epidemiologist and infectious diseases specialist at University of Chicago Medicine. “Make sure you are wearing a mask and using hand hygiene,” she says. And look for an airline, train or bus company that is enforcing rules like universal masking.

If you do fly, or take public transportation, you need to quarantine on arrival, Miller says. Stay in a hotel or rental, and socially distance for 10 to 14 days, before visiting your parents or grandparents. “This means a true quarantine — no visits to theme parks, museums or restaurants,” Miller says.

Should you get tested?

Kullar suggests getting a PCR test before you travel. That’s the diagnostic test to determine if you are infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. People who are asymptomatic or presymptomatic can spread the virus, without even knowing they are infected. If your test is positive you should cancel your trip and quarantine yourself for 14 days and get retested. Also, it is important to tell anyone that you have been around of your positive test result, Kullar says.

But if your test is negative, you still need to take precautions. Tests are not always accurate. According to the CDC, it’s possible you could still have COVID-19, even if your test result is negative.

“It’s important to remember testing is not perfect,” Miller says. “A test is a snapshot in that moment.” If the test is taken too early after infection, there may not be enough virus present to be detected by a test.

So if you do get a negative test before you travel, you must still make sure you’ve put in two weeks of strict social distancing before the visit.

Where should you stay?

Given that many people won’t be able to fully quarantine, you want to be really careful, “get an Airbnb” or a hotel room, advises Kullar, and just drop by and visit. “Sit outside, greet without touching. Keep your distance. Wear a mask and stay outdoors,” she says. “Transmission is a much lower probability outside, as long as you are keeping a good 6 feet distance apart, thanks to the constant airflow,” she adds.

If you’ve been able to quarantine for 14 days, it’s reasonable to stay with your older relatives in their home. But, remember, you need to remain vigilant. “Your risk is tied to the risk of the people that you spend time with up close and unmasked,” Landon says.

So once you’ve arrived where your older relatives live, “you want to keep your bubble intact,” Miller says. You may want to limit any other social contacts during the visit and just focus on quality time with the grandparents or a few close relatives. Anybody that you are going to hang out with up close and without your mask, especially indoors, could potentially spread the virus. So, keep the circle small, and expand it only with people who have been practicing social distancing and taking precautions.

And if you’re adding more people to the mix for a gathering, it’s best if you can stay outdoors, and tell everyone to BYOB — and BYO-everything (bring your own everything) to limit the touching of shared surfaces.

Limit activities when you get there

What you do during the visit also matters. Avoid crowds, and stick to outdoor activities as much as possible.

“Don’t go out to theme parks and museums [or other crowded places], even if the grandparents don’t go along,” Miller says. That’s because most transmissions of the virus are thought to happen in household settings. So if you get exposed outside the home you could bring that home and infect your relatives.

“If you’re sharing the house, everything you do is shared with the elderly folks,” Miller says.

If you are taking young children to visit their grandparents, talk to them before you go, advises Kullar, tell them why it’s not a good idea to hug their grandmother or grandfather. “Really have a solid discussion with them about that because they may have trouble adhering to the social distancing measures.” Miller agrees: “Limit hugs and close contact, unless you have done a full quarantine”which means not leaving the house for anything except necessary medical care.

Consider staying home

Unless, you can rigorously follow all the guidelines above, it may be that the best way to be really safe is to forego the family visit this year and stay home, Miller says. Find creative ways to engage with your parents or grandparents by phone or video. Play games by video, read books together, watch a movie at the same time.

“This is a time to embrace some virtual tools,” Kullar says, to make sure your loved one doesn’t feel socially isolated. She lives in Los Angeles, her mother in North Carolina, so they meet for morning coffee using face time and have dinner together maybe once a week.

NEW YORK (CNN) — The new coronavirus spreads mainly via airborne transmission and wearing a mask is the most effective way to stop person-to person spread, according to a new study.

A team of researchers in Texas and California compared COVID-19 infection rate trends in Italy and New York both before and after face masks were made mandatory. Both locations started to see infection rates flatten only after mandatory face mask measures were put in place, according to the study published Thursday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

The researchers calculated that wearing face masks prevented more than 78,000 infections in Italy between April 6 and May 9, and more than 66,000 infections in New York City between April 17 and May 9.

“Wearing of face masks in public corresponds to the most effective means to prevent interhuman transmission, and this inexpensive practice, in conjunction with simultaneous social distancing, quarantine, and contact tracing, represents the most likely fighting opportunity to stop the COVID-19 pandemic, prior to the development of a vaccine” they wrote.

The researchers gauged the effectiveness of different strategies for stopping the spread of infection and to determine how the virus is mainly spread. Viruses can spread by direct contact when a person coughs or sneezes on another person; indirect contact, when a person coughs or sneezes on an object that is then touched by another person; or in the air via large droplets that fall quickly to the ground and tiny droplets, called aerosols, that can travel several feet and hang in the air for a while.

To determine how the main transmission method of the virus, the researchers analyzed trends in the infection rates in three epicenters of the pandemic — Wuhan, China, Italy, and New York City. They looked at mitigation measures that were being used at those locations, like extensive testing, quarantining, contact tracing, social distancing and mandatory use of face masks.

The researchers then compared the timing of when those measures were put in place. In China, all of the measures were put in place at the same time. In contrast, mitigation measures were put in place at different times in Italy and New York.

This allowed the researchers to assess the relative effectiveness of the measures. They found infection rates in Italy and NYC only started to slow after face masks were made mandatory, not after the lockdown was put in place in Italy or after stay-at-home orders went into effect in New York.

Regions in northern Italy began requiring face masks on April 6 with mandatory use nationwide ordered on May 4. Face mask usage in New York City was required starting on April 17. The researchers calculated the number of infections prevented between those dates and May 9.

“Face covering prevents both airborne transmission by blocking atomization and inhalation of virus-bearing aerosols and contact transmission by blocking viral shedding of droplets,” they write. “On the other hand, social distancing, quarantine, and isolation, in conjunction with hand sanitizing, minimize contact (direct and indirect) transmission but do not protect against airborne transmission.”

The study noted that in contrast with China, wearing of face masks was unpopular in most of the Western world during the early outbreak of the pandemic. But the researchers said the evidence shows masks work to slow spread.

The researchers wrote that both the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasized the prevention of contact transmission, but both organizations have largely ignored the importance of the airborne transmission route.

“The current mitigation measures, such as social distancing, quarantine, and isolation implemented in the United States, are insufficient by themselves in protecting the public,” the researchers wrote.

The team of five researchers are from the Texas A&M University, the University of Texas, the University of California, San Diego, and the California Institute of Technology.

New York City has at least 205,846 coronavirus cases and at least 17,351 confirmed deaths with an additional 4,692 possible deaths, according to the NYC Department of Health. The number of confirmed cases, hospitalizations and deaths have steadily declined since peaking in early April. New York City is officially ending its lockdown and easing restrictions as it enters phase 1 of its reopening phase on Monday.

Italy has been in a nationwide lockdown since March 9, but Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said in a press conference Thursday night that the country is further easing its coronavirus lockdown measures to allow professional sporting events, like the Coppa Italia football match, to resume behind closed doors from Friday.

Other establishments can also reopen from June 25, including summer camps, kindergartens, betting rooms, and bingo halls, Conte said, announcing that he had just signed a decree that eases further the lockdown measures. Non-professional sports that involve physical contact may also resume.

A new research review suggests that publicly available mouthwashes could, in theory, inhibit SARS-CoV-2. The team behind the review call for further research to be done to confirm their speculative findings.

If clinical trials prove effective, the findings, published in the journal Function, may provide another way to reduce the spread of the disease until scientists can produce an effective, publicly available vaccine.

Since the sudden emergence and rapid spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, scientists and researchers have focussed on the development of a vaccine that could help protect people vulnerable to COVID-19.

However, scientists have estimated that an effective, publicly available vaccine could take at least 12–18 months to develop.

In the meantime, some scientists are focusing on ways to reduce the rate of infection to controllable levels that will not overwhelm hospital intensive care units.

Other scientists have investigated the development of effective treatments that may reduce the transmission rate of the virus.

One area of research involves disrupting the way the virus can take over a cell of a host as it replicates itself.

SARS-CoV-2, like other coronaviruses, is an enveloped virus. This means that it creates an outer membrane by drawing on the cells of a host organism.

This membrane allows the virus to replicate effectively. If scientists can disrupt this envelope, then this might slow down the spread of the virus within an organism.

Using soap and water or disinfectant can disrupt a viral envelope and kill the virus. Research has shown that disinfectants can kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

This is why health authorities and organizations encourage people to wash their hands and surfaces with soap or alcohol-based products regularly.

The present review proposes that some publicly available mouthwashes may be able to help fulfill this role.

Scientists have shown that the virus replicates significantly in the throat. This may mean that a patient with COVID-19 is likely to have the highest concentration of the virus in this area. With high levels of the virus in the throat, it is easy for a person to transmit it through breathing, coughing, and sneezing.

Previous research into alcohol’s ability to disrupt the SARS-CoV-2 envelope has focused on products with a high alcohol content of between 60% and 70%.

This is because manufacturers typically design alcohol-based products to be effective in a variety of circumstances, including viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

However, there is little high-quality research exploring how lower-strength alcohol-based products might affect the viral envelope.

The authors of the current study wanted to see if alcohol-based mouthwashes — which come into contact with a person’s throat, a key site for viral load, and a source of viral transmission — could, in theory, inhibit the transmission of the virus or reduce its severity.

Put simply, if a significant spread of the virus originates from the throat, then it makes sense to trial the efficacy of products that have the potential to kill the virus at this location.

The authors note that due to the speed that the new coronavirus emerged, there is still much to learn about how it functions.

As such, their theory relies on certain assumptions that may turn out to be unfounded.

For example, scientists do not know how the virus moves from a person’s throat or nose to the lungs. The authors note that this could occur through breathing in dead viral cell debris, viral shedding, or neighboring cells becoming infected.

However, given the urgency of the public health crisis, it is necessary to propose speculative theories that scientists can then test in laboratories and, finally, in clinical trials.

Although there is little scientific literature exploring the effects of low-alcohol concentrations on viral envelopes, the authors drew on research that looked at the effects on mammalian cells.

The virus develops its envelope from these cells. So, it may be possible to compare the effects on these cells to the potential effects on the viral envelope.

After studying the literature, the researchers found that there was good reason to suppose that some low-alcohol products would, in theory, be able to disrupt the viral envelope of SARS-CoV-2.

The authors make it clear that their research is speculative. Researchers need to carry out more research to discover whether mouthwashes will affect the new coronavirus.

Nonetheless, this work shows that, in principle, this is a valuable area to study. This type of research is made urgent by the current global public health crisis.

Researchers have found that wearing surgical masks can significantly reduce the rate of airborne COVID-19 transmission, according to a study released on Sunday.

The study, conducted by a team of scientists in Hong Kong, found the rate of non-contact transmission through respiratory droplets or airborne particles dropped by as much as 75 percent when masks were used.

“The findings implied to the world and the public is that the effectiveness of mask-wearing against the coronavirus pandemic is huge,” said Dr. Yuen Kwok-yung, a leading microbiologist from Hong Kong University who helped discover the SARS virus back in 2003.

It was released by the department of microbiology at the University of Hong Kong and comes as world leaders, including the World Health Organization (WHO), have questioned the effectiveness of face coverings outside of medical settings.

The study, described as a first of its kind, placed hamsters in two cages, with one of the groups infected with COVID-19 and the other being healthy. They placed the animals in three different scenarios to analyze the effectiveness of the face coverings.

In one scenario the mask barriers were placed only on cages with the infected subjects, another saw the masks covering the healthy subjects, and the third saw with no mask barriers at all. For all of the scenarios, a fan was placed between the cages to allow for the transmission of respiratory droplets.

They found that when the mask was placed over the infected cage the infection rate dropped to just over 15 percent.

That infection rate went up to 33 percent when the mask barrier was only used to cover the healthy hamsters’ cage.

With no mask barriers at all, roughly two-thirds of the healthy hamsters were infected with the virus within a week, the study found.

Researchers added that the hamsters who were infected even with the mask barrier had less of the virus in their bodies when compared to those infected without the masks.

“In our hamster experiment, it shows very clearly that if infected hamsters or humans — especially asymptomatic or symptomatic ones — put on masks, they actually protect other people,” Yuen said in a press conference on Sunday, according to Sky News.

“That’s the strongest result we showed here. Transmission can be reduced by 50 percent when surgical masks are used, especially when masks are worn by infected individuals.”

He said up until we have a vaccine for the virus, what remains practical is either social distancing or wearing a mask.

Last month, a separate study published by a group of international experts, created a model that shows cases of the virus could be cut significantly if “(near) universal masking” is adopted.

“Universal masking at 80 [percent] adoption flattens the curve significantly more than maintaining a strict lockdown,” researchers wrote in the study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, as of last week.

“Masking at only 50 [percent] adoption is not sufficient to prevent continued spread,” the researchers added. “Replacing the strict lockdown with social distancing on May 31 without masking results in unchecked spread.”
