A protest was held outside of a New York bakery Thursday over a MAGA hat cake.

Coccadotts Cake Shop in Albany put a picture on its social media of a cake baked into the shape of a red “Make American Great Again” hat. The cake was a custom-order.

The cake set off a wave of backlash when it was posted in late July. Though it was quickly deleted after the negative response, protestors from the Black Lives Matter movement and those supporting the MAGA cake faced off in front of the bakery on Aug. 13.

According to video footage from the protest, the sides are seen arguing while police officers attempt to keep a barricade between the groups.

“Hey, hey, ho, ho racism has got to go,” Black Lives Matter supporters chanted.

One of the Black Lives Matter members told the Albany Times Union he was trying to have a civil conversation but was unable to do so with the other group.

“They’re able to feel what they feel about their politics. We have issues when it comes to social injustice as in firing someone because they’re gay, wearing ‘All Lives Matter’ masks,” said Legacy Casanova of Schenectady, the Times Union reported.

Bakery owner Rachel Dott spoke to Fox News about the protests, claiming the response to the cake has been mixed online and in person.

“After putting up the photo, we ended up shutting down our social media platform,” she said. “We received threats: ‘We’re going to burn down’ the bakery.’”

However, within the community, Dott said the bakery has seen an outpouring of support and has been inundated with cake orders – many of which are for the MAGA cake design.

“We don’t say no to anyone,” Dott responded when asked if the bakery was still honoring the design.

“We’ve made rainbow cakes. The Black Lives Matter group ordered a cake,” she added.

According to Dott, and the Times Union outlet, protestors alleged the bakery had ties to the far-right Proud Boys group. She claimed that is untrue.

Dott said she was unsure why the Aug. 13 date was chosen, more than two weeks after the initial incident.

Cori Bush, a onetime homeless woman who led protests following a White police officer’s fatal shooting of a Black 18-year-old in Ferguson, ousted longtime Rep. William Lacy Clay Tuesday in Missouri’s Democratic primary, ending a political dynasty that has spanned more than a half-century.

Bush’s victory came in a rematch of 2018, when she failed to capitalize on a national Democratic wave that favored political newcomers such as Bush’s friend, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

But this time around, Bush’s supporters said protests over the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis and outrage over racial injustice finally pushed her over the edge.

An emotional Bush, speaking to supporters while wearing a mask, said few people expected her to win.

“They counted us out,” she said. “They called me — I’m just the protester, I’m just the activist with no name, no title and no real money. That’s all they said that I was. But St. Louis showed up today.”

Bush’s campaign spokeswoman, Keenan Korth, said voters in the district were “galvanized.”

“They’re ready to turn the page on decades of failed leadership,” Korth said.

Bush, 44, also had backing from political action committee Justice Democrats and Fight Corporate Monopolies this election. She campaigned for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders during his presidential bid.

Bush’s primary win essentially guarantees her a seat in Congress representing the heavily Democratic St. Louis area. Missouri’s 1st Congressional District has been represented by Clay or his father for a half-century. Bill Clay served 32 years before retiring in 2000. William Lacy Clay, 64, was elected that year.

Clay didn’t face a serious challenger until Bush. This year, he ran on his decades-long record in Congress.

“This election is a simple choice,” Clay said in a Monday statement. “Cori Bush’s Empty Rhetoric, or my record of real results and real reforms for the people.”

Both Clay and Bush are Black, and Black residents slightly outnumber whites in the district that includes St. Louis and north St. Louis County.

Bush became ill while pregnant with her second child in 2001 and had to quit her job at a preschool. When she and her then-husband were evicted from a rental home, the couple, their newborn and 14-month-old son lived out of a Ford Explorer for several months.

Eventually, the couple divorced. Bush earned a nursing degree. She also became a pastor.

Michael Brown’s death in 2014 in Ferguson vaulted her into another role: activist. She became a leader of some of the many protests that followed the fatal police shooting of the Black, unarmed 18-year-old. She was back on the streets in 2017 after a white St. Louis officer was acquitted in the shooting death of a Black suspect.

She continues to lead protests.

“She’s being buoyed by this movement, and the movement’s origin is in Ferguson,” Justice Democrats spokesman Waleed Shahid said.

The group was guided by an Alexandria police patrol car as it marched a block and a half to the house and chanted Black Lives Matter protest slogans. Three police officers were deployed in the side yard of Wolf’s house, and another was in a blue SUV in the driveway, the Post reported.

Speakers at the demonstration condemned the DHS’s involvement in immigrant family separations, deportations and what they described as the “kidnapping” of Portland demonstrators.

One of Wolf’s neighbors Rebecca Loesberg told the Post that she ordered snacks and water when she learned of the protest to hand out.

DHS did not immediately return a request to comment.

The dispatched federal law enforcement have reportedly used tear gas and detained protesters.

Trump threatened last week to send federal law enforcement to other cities like Chicago amid unrest and violence.

The federal response to Portland has prompted other demonstrators across the country to take to the streets, including on Saturday night when several cities declared the gatherings as riots or unlawful assemblies.

Protests in Portland were declared a riot early Sunday as thousands breached a federal courthouse where federal agents are being stationed, according to police.

Throughout the night — the 59th consecutive day of demonstrations in the Oregon city — police fired teargas in violent clashes with protesters who retaliated with fireworks, officials said, with at least 26 arrests.

They declared a riot in the early hours after “thousands” gathered at the federal courthouse and Justice Center and pulled down some of the fence, the Portland Police Bureau said.

“Throughout the night some people in this crowd spent their time shaking the fence around the building, throwing rocks, bottles, and assorted debris over the fence, shining lasers through the fence, firing explosive fireworks into the area blocked by the fence, and using power tools to try to cut through the fence,” the bureau said in a statement.

“People wore gas masks, carried shields, hockey sticks, leaf blowers, flags, and umbrellas specifically to thwart police in crowd dispersal or attempt to conceal criminal acts. People against the fence sprayed unknown liquids through it toward the courthouse. People tied rope to the fence and attempted to pull it down,” the bureau said.

“At about 1:03 a.m. people in the crowd attached a chain to the fence and with many people pulling managed to pull a section of it down,” the bureau said, with protesters also lighting fires in the street.

“People climbed over the fence to get close to the federal courthouse. People continued to launch mortar style fireworks at ground level that were exploding near others.”

Images and words were projected onto the building including “Keep fighting. Keep pushing” as agents fired tear gas at the protesters, onlookers said.

The bureau said that “dozens of people in the crowd maintained this level of violence and tumultuous conduct and were either intentionally or recklessly creating a grave risk of public alarm.”

“Portland Police declared a riot based on the conduct of people in the crowd and gave repeated warnings that anyone who remained may be subject to arrest or citation and may be subject to force including impact weapons or tear gas,” the bureau said.

In the hours leading up to the riot declaration, thousands of people gathered in the city for another night of protests over George Floyd’s killing and the presence of federal agents in response to public assembly.

Portland’s police chief, Chuck Lovell, released a video plea for peace late Saturday.

“Across the country people are committing violence, supposedly in support of Portland,” Lovell said. “If you want to support Portland then stop the violence, work for peace. Portland police officers and police facilities have been threatened.”

The force instead wants to focus on “the real relationships that will create change,” the chief insisted.

“We want to get back to the critical issues that have been hijacked by people committing crimes under the cover of the crowds,” Lovell said.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Shields were made of pool noodles, umbrellas and sleds. The body armor was pieced together with bicycle helmets and football pads. The weapons included water bottles and cigarette lighters.

Facing federal forces who came to Portland to subdue them, many of the city’s protesters have taken to the streets this week with items scrounged from home. Then they have assembled at the federal courthouse each night with sometimes starkly different visions of how to put their tools to use.

In 55 consecutive nights of protest in Portland, no two have been alike. The protests began on May 29, after the killing of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis. They have continued ever since, night after night, and they show no signs of letting up.

With no clear leaders or blueprints, the demonstrators have largely embraced a strategy of spontaneous consensus, which follows the whims of the crowd and, sometimes, the resolutions of their internal disagreements — such as whether fire is an appropriate addition to their protest.

“It’s really organic and non-centralized,” said Luke Meyer, who walked through the streets overnight with a plywood shield. “You almost vote with your actions.”

For weeks, city officials who have been the target of much of the ire have been unable to find a way to bring the demonstrations to an end. Now those protesters are giving grief to federal agents who were assigned to maintain calm in the city but have instead watched the number of protesters outside the federal courthouse swell into the thousands.

“Whose streets?” they shout, in one of their signature chants. “Our streets. Whose lives matter? Black lives matter.”

The protests have drawn diverse crowds, including teenagers, grandmothers, longtime activists and those joining the fray for the first time.

In the early morning hours on Wednesday, protesters used a range of tactics. While some spent their time chanting, dancing or locking arms, others slowly chipped away at the temporary wooden facade of the courthouse building, eventually pulling away a whole panel to expose an entryway. Some used lasers or bright lights to shine at holes from which federal officers sometimes fire projectiles into the crowd. Others dragged in barricades to cover the building’s entrances.

At one point during the protests that raged from late Tuesday night into Wednesday, federal agents rushed out of the courthouse and shoved a group of mothers wearing matching yellow shirts as tear gas billowed around them. In another moment, the agents knocked one protester down onto a pole. After clearing a park, the agents rummaged through a makeshift kitchen that has been used to feed the protesters, knocking food and supplies to the ground.

Facing volleys of tear gas that left many coughing, the protesters retreated up Main Street. But they soon regrouped and returned as the authorities backed off. In an echo of the “umbrella revolution” in Hong Kong, protesters with shields and umbrellas took the front of the line to protect themselves and others from the weaponry of federal forces in tactical gear.

The authorities have accused protesters of at times using dangerous methods, including launching projectiles from sling shots. In one of dozens of arrests during the demonstrations, a protester was charged recently with hitting an officer with a hammer.

In court documents, the federal government has said protesters have committed “vandalism, destruction of property, looting, arson and assault.” A Molotov cocktail was thrown on May 28, according to court papers, and security cameras on federal buildings have been vandalized. One protester was accused of pushing a glass door on July 2, causing the glass to break and injure a deputy marshal.

The federal efforts to confront the demonstrators in recent days were often preceded by attempts by some protesters to light fires on the facade of the federal courthouse, which has been boarded up with wood that has been painted and targeted by protesters.

Image

Credit…Mason Trinca for The New York Times

On Wednesday morning, someone started trying to light a portion of the facade but was blocked by another person. Later, a debate developed in the crowd over whether to allow the fire, with one protester arguing that being peaceful was the better route.

Megan Smith was among those who opposed the use of fire, saying she douses any flames she encounters.

“I would prefer fires to be controlled,” Ms. Smith said. “I get it that it’s how you get your anger out, but it makes it dangerous for everybody else.”

In part, she said, starting a fire raises the risks for everyone because it is clear that it will prompt federal officers to come out to confront the crowds. And on Wednesday, it did just that.

The federal authorities have seized on the lighting of fires as further justification for their presence in Portland.

“Individuals trying to set fire to a building are no longer protesting,” Chad F. Wolf, the acting secretary of homeland security, said at a news conference on Tuesday. “They are criminals.”

Early on Tuesday morning protesters had lit bonfires in the streets around the federal courthouse and tried to ignite the plywood protecting the building. There were fewer fires at the protests early on Wednesday morning.

“If we left tomorrow, they would burn that building down,” said Mr. Wolf, who added that the agency was compiling video evidence of protesters lighting fires.

Yet Mr. Wolf’s insistence that federal agents stay to protect federal property — both the mayor of Portland and the governor of Oregon have asked that the federal agents leave the state — is part of the dynamic that is causing the protests to swell into the thousands.

Among the protesters on Tuesday night was Ronda Jordan, 63, who works as a quality control officer for a company that makes granola bars. None of her friends felt bold enough to attend the demonstrations, so she came alone.

“Frankly, I was afraid to come down here, too — the feds intimidate me,” she said, clutching a sunflower as a symbol of peace. “But the more they come at us with federal officers, the more people are going to come out here.”

In recent days “Feds go home!” has become a rallying cry for protesters. Laurie Vandenburgh, a school counselor, and her daughter Emily Vanlaningham, a social worker, said their presence was one of the main reasons they joined the protests on Tuesday night.

“I’m personally upset that the feds are here,” Ms. Vandenburgh said. “Our city is fine without them.”

Sergio Olmos contributed reporting.

Hong Kong activists have deleted social media profiles and closed down campaign groups after Beijing passed a new security law for the territory that many fear could land them in jail.

The standing committee of the National People’s Congress approved the measure on Tuesday morning and it is expected to be enacted in Hong Kong late Tuesday, on the eve of the 23rd anniversary of its return to Chinese rule.

The legislation, aimed at stamping out the often violent anti-government protests that have engulfed Hong Kong over the past year, will criminalise secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces.

The full text of the law has not yet been released, but the public broadcaster RTHK quoted sources as saying that under “special circumstances”, Hong Kong’s top leader and the Beijing-led national security agency in Hong Kong could send “serious” national security cases to mainland Chinese courts to be tried.

High-profile activists Joshua Wong, Nathan Law and Agnes Chow resigned from their political group, Demosisto, and the group itself announced its closure hours after news of the law’s passage. Hong Kong National Front, a pro-independence group, also announced its closure, but said its work would continue in Taiwan and the UK. Another pro-independence group, Studentlocalism, also said it would cease operating.

Local reports say the penalties for national security crimes will range from three to 10 years in prison, with life imprisonment for “serious cases”. The law is not supposed to be applied retroactively, although any actions that have “endangered the state” in the past two years could be used as evidence in courts, they say.

Although reports say China would exercise jurisdiction in only a minority of serious national security cases the Hong Kong government is unable to handle, many Hong Kongers were not reassured.

“It’s all so vague. Whatever they say about this targeting only a few people, I cannot trust them,” said Marie Tsang.

“I feel very uncomfortable because you don’t know where the red line is, you don’t know what they mean by national security crimes so you just second-guess,” said Tsang, a former accountant and full-time mother who said she has deleted many of her photos and posts online and is seeking to emigrate.

A student who identified himself as Kelvin, said he found the law “unnecessary” and “disturbing”.

“Many things in this law are open to interpretation. The authorities get to pick judges and how they interpret things will become precedents in courts,” said the 27-year-old, who said he was also deleting photos and posts online.

Some activists showed defiance by staging a lunchtime protest in a shopping centre in the prestigious Central business district. Several people sang songs and chanted slogans. Some displayed pro-independence flags and held up posters opposing the national security law, and urged people to take part in a protest on 1 July – the anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to Beijing’s control. A large number of police officers conducted searches on some of them.

Police have banned the 1 July march, which has taken place every year since 1997, citing Covid concerns, but activists have said they would still demonstrate. On Lihkg.com, a site popular with protesters, users called for people to come out to “celebrate” the passage of the law.

In the decades since the handover, Hong Kong’s free press, independent courts and legislature, as well as its traditions of protests and marches have made the city a haven for the civil liberties not enjoyed across the border, especially as the government under Xi Jinping has further cracked down on civil society.

Those differences were thrown into sharp relief last year as protests – over another controversial bill that residents saw as further Chinese encroachment on their city – turned into a broader democracy movement. Police have in the past year arrested more than 9,000 protesters, including pro-democracy lawmakers and activists who have frequently lobbied to bring international attention to Hong Kong’s cause.

Some hope the security law will put an end to the protests. A 70-year-old market stall owner, who identified herself as Mrs Ha, said heavier punishment was needed to stop “the rioters from wrecking Hong Kong”.

“It will scare people and they won’t cause chaos any more,” she said.

Ip Kwok-him, a Hong Kong deputy to the Chinese parliament National People’s Congress, said the law was not “a toothless tiger” and would have a “deterrent effect”.

A shooting at a protest in Louisville, Kentucky’s Jefferson Square Park resulted in one death and one injury Saturday night, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

The park has been the epicenter of ongoing protests against police brutality and racism, sparked by a series of police killings, including of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Breonna Taylor in Louisville. Several protesters had set up tents and were staying overnight in the park.

The shooting began at around 9 pm ET, according to police. Video posted on social media shows a man firing more than a dozen shots into the crowd from the edge of the park.

Police cleared the park following the shooting early Sunday morning and said demonstrations can continue during the day, but no one will be allowed to stay overnight.

“I am deeply saddened by the violence that erupted in Jefferson Square Park tonight, where those who have been voicing their concerns have been gathered,” Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer wrote on Facebook. “It is a tragedy that this area of peaceful protest is now a crime scene.”

This is a developing story. Here’s what we know so far.

What we know

  • Louisville Metro Police received reports of shots fired at Jefferson Square Park around 9 pm ET Saturday.
  • Video posted on Facebook shows a man firing a gun into the park. The clips show people screaming and dropping to the ground; others began running. One person can be seen on the ground as someone near them calls for a medic.
  • The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reportedly attempted to perform emergency first aid on a man who had been shot. He later died at the scene.
  • A second victim, whose gender has not been identified, was shot and found at the Hall of Justice near the park. They were taken to a local hospital, having sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
  • Around 10 pm, Louisville police arrived at the park in riot gear.
  • Police cleared the park after the shooting to begin an investigation, and a local public works team packed up the tents left behind by protesters. Police announced early Sunday morning that camping overnight in the park will no longer be allowed.
  • Louisville has been a center of the international protests that have followed the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in late May. Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old Louisville EMT, was shot and killed by local police in her home on March 13, about 10 weeks before Floyd’s death. None of the three officers involved in Taylor’s death have been arrested.
  • A counterprotest featuring “armed freedom fighter patriots” at the park was planned for earlier that day. Some of the anti-racist and police brutality protesters brought their own firearms to the daytime demonstration in anticipation of a confrontation, but no counterprotesters arrived.
  • Saturday night’s shooting was not the first in a month of mostly-peaceful protests: Seven people were wounded during a shooting at nearby City Hall in Louisville on May 28.

What we don’t know

  • The identity or age of the shooter
  • The shooter’s motive or the firearm used
  • The identity or age of the victims
  • Whether there are any suspects
  • Whether any suspects are in police custody
