]]>Hillary Clinton said on MSNBC’s “Reidout” Monday night that President Trump had commuted ex-adviser Roger Stone’s sentence “to basically shut up Roger Stone so that Roger Stone would not spill any more beans about what actually happened and what Donald Trump actually knew.”
“This is a continuation of the cover-up,” Clinton declared. It was not immediately clear what Clinton was implying that Stone could have divulged to prosecutors; Special Counsel Robert Mueller and federal prosecutors never alleged that Stone had engaged in a criminal conspiracy with any Russian actor.
Although Clinton didn’t provide evidence to support her theory, she went on to assure viewers on the primetime show that Russia had successfully swung votes to Trump in 2016 — and will try to do so again.
“It’s very clear that Russia succeeded,” Clinton said. “They believe that they were able to influence the minds and even votes of Americans, so why would they stop? They really want to pursue their agenda of dividing us.”
Republicans reacted with a mixture of exasperation and mockery.
“It’s rich watching Hillary Clinton talk about accepting the results of an election when she herself STILL has not accepted the results of the 2016 election when she lost to @realDonaldTrump,” GOP spokesperson Steve Guest tweeted.
Clinton also hit Trump for supposedly not speaking out about a report in The New York Times that he had done nothing about intelligence that Russia was placing bounties on the heads of U.S. troops.
“He still as president of the United States has yet to say anything about bounties on American troops,” she said.
However, Trump and his administration have repeatedly dismissed the Times’ reporting, claiming the intelligence was unverified.
“The Russia Bounty story is just another made up by Fake News tale that is told only to damage me and the Republican Party,” Trump tweeted earlier this month. “The secret source probably does not even exist, just like the story itself.” Trump called on the Times to reveal their source, claiming the story was “Just another HOAX!”
Separately, Reid also interviewed Joe Biden, who appeared to refer to a “voter registration physician” at one point in his interview. Republicans quickly mocked that moment, as well.

President Trump tweeted only once Saturday, posting a simple message that praised the late Rep. John Lewis as a “civil rights hero.”
Lewis, who had represented Georgia for decades in the House, died Friday in Atlanta at the age of 80. He had advanced pancreatic cancer.
“Saddened to hear the news of civil rights hero John Lewis passing,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Melania and I send our prayers to he and his family.”
Lewis, the son of Alabama sharecroppers, made his name as one of the original Freedom Riders in the early 1960s. In 1963, at just 23, he was a keynote speaker at the March on Washington alongside Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
Trump also issued an official White House proclamation ordering federal flags to fly at half-staff in Washington and at US embassies and military bases worldwide “as a mark of respect for the memory and longstanding public service” of the 17-term congressman.
But Lewis and the president were often at odds. The lawmaker boycotted Trump’s inauguration in 2017, spurring at least 60 other Democrats to follow.
On Saturday, Trump let his surrogates take the lead in praising Lewis.
Vice President Mike Pence, in a lengthy emotional statement posted on Twitter, described Lewis as “a great man whose courage and public service changed America forever.”
Pence, who served alongside Lewis for six terms in Congress, called him “a colleague and a friend” whose “selflessness and conviction rendered our nation into a more perfect union.”
“Even when we differed, John was always unfailingly kind,” Pence wrote.
Clarence Henderson, a member of Trump’s “Black Voices for Trump” campaign arm, said Lewis “dedicated his life and career to bettering our country.”
“We will forever be grateful for the legacy he leaves as we pray for him and his family,” Henderson said on behalf of the Trump campaign.
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany also offered tributes.
“He leaves an enduring legacy that will never be forgotten,” she tweeted.
But some in Lewis’ circle were not moved by White House words.
“Please let us mourn in peace,” Rep. Karen Bass, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, tweeted Saturday morning in a message directed at Trump.
“While the nation mourns the passing of a national hero, please say nothing,” Bass pleaded.
Funeral arrangements for Lewis have yet been announced, but Fox News reported that the widely admired congressman’s body is likely to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol in the coming days — an honor that has been extended to only 36 American citizens in the nation’s history.

]]>A Saratoga Springs pub has added “Cuomo Chips” to the menu after Gov. Andrew Cuomo imposed a new coronavirus restriction on restaurants that alcohol purchases include food.
Cuomo had complained Thursday that some restaurants had transformed into crowded outdoor stand-up bars where rules for masks and social distancing were being ignored. He also wants imbibing diners to be seated. He plans to enforce a three-strike rule that could cost violaters their liquor license.
In downtown Saratoga, Harvey’s Irish Pub Owner Matthew Bagely says he is complying with the new rule by selling Cuomo potato chips to customers who don’t want a full meal, WRGB-TV reported.
“I mean why not, they’re his chips, they’re his rule so he might as well get some recognition and acknowledgment for another little hurdle we have to jump through as business owners,” Bagely told the station, referring to the governor.

Cuomo senior adviser Rich Azzopardi said Friday that the Harvey’s chips don’t violate the governor’s food-requirement rule, according to the New York Post.

Begley clarified Friday that he has been in compliance with the coronavirus restrictions on food and alcohol and wasn’t trying to make a political statement.

President Trump on Sunday said the federal government was “ready, willing and able” to intervene over the surge of shootings in New York City and Chicago.
The president, in a tweet, noted the gun violence that erupted over 4th of July weekend in both cities, with nearly 40 people wounded in the Big Apple and 72 in the Windy City, including 13 who died.
“Chicago and New York City crime numbers are way up,” he wrote. “Federal Government ready, willing and able to help, if asked!”
In New York, between midnight Saturday and 6:30 a.m. Sunday, 39 people were struck by gunfire across every borough except Staten Island, with at least three people killed, police sources told The Post.
The July shootings come on the heels of a violent June in the city. With a total of 205 shootings during the month, it was the bloodiest June in 24 years — going back to 1996, when the NYPD logged 236 incidents, the department said.
Trump said New Yorkers were demanding that Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio “act now” on the surging gun violence.
He added in a subsequent tweet: “Democrats want to Defund & Abolish Police. This despite poor crime numbers in cities that they run. CRAZY!”
In Chicago, between 11:09 p.m Saturday and 2:15 a.m. Sunday, 13 people were killed and 59 injured in shootings, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
At least two children, a 7-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, were among those killed. Nine of the wounded were minors, the paper said.

Former Vice President Joe Biden offered a message of hope and unity on Fourth of July that was in sharp contrast to the divisive tone of President Donald Trump’s address at Mount Rushmore on Friday. With a message that centered around racial justice, Biden said that the United States “never lived up” to its founding principle that “all men are created equal.” In a video that includes images of protests and references to the Black Lives Matter movement, Biden offered a hopeful tone, saying that “We have a chance to rip the roots of systemic racism out of this country” and “live up to the words that founded this nation.” Trump on the other hand delivered a “dark speech” that amounted to “a full-on culture war against a straw-man version of the left that he portrayed as inciting mayhem and moving the country toward totalitarianism,” as the New York Times puts it.
The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee didn’t mention Trump in his video message but his words marked a clear distinction from Trump who said that anyone who dared question the country’s “heroes” are part of a “radical ideology.” Trump insisted that the recent protests that have engulfed the country had cemented divisions. “Our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values and indoctrinate our children,” Trump said. “Angry mobs are trying to tear down statues of our founders, deface our most sacred memorials and unleash a wave of violent crime in our cities.”
As Trump insisted that a “left-wing cultural revolution” was trying to rewrite U.S. history, Biden emphasized that it is important to remember that the country’s past isn’t exactly perfect. “American history is no fairy tale,” Biden said. “It’s been a constant push and pull between two parts of our character, the idea that all men and women — all people — are created equal and the racism that has torn us apart.”
On Saturday, Trump once again turned what is typically a non-partisan Independence Day celebration into a campaign event by criticizing the usual suspects, including protesters and the media. Following the theme from Friday, Trump accused protesters of “lying” about the country’s history at speech in the White House while he characterized himself as the defender of the country’s “rich heritage” and the “American way of life, which began in 1492 when Columbus discovered America.” As he fanned the flames of the culture wars, Trump also blasted China, saying its “deception” allowed the coronavirus to spread more quickly. The speech was a marked change from Trump’s July 4th address last year that focused on patriotism and mostly avoided partisan issues. And unlike last year, the crowds at the National Mall were pretty thin on Saturday.
In an op-ed piece, Biden went further on this idea, noting that “Independence Day is a celebration of our persistent march toward greater justice.” He also directly slammed Trump in the op-ed, saying he is the main person responsible for throwing the nation off course in its quest for a more perfect union. “Every day, he finds new ways to tarnish and dismantle our democracy—from baseless attacks on our voting rights to the use of military force against Americans protesting peacefully for racial justice,” Biden wrote. “He has systematically gone after the guardrails of our democracy: the free press, the courts, and our fundamental belief that no one in America—not even the president—is above the law.”
Biden’s campaign also harshly criticized Trump’s Friday speech. “Our whole country is suffering through the excruciating costs of having a negligent, divisive president who doesn’t give a damn about anything but his own gain,” campaign spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement. It didn’t take long for the Trump campaign to fire back while doubling down on the divisive message. “The idea that Biden, with his 40 plus years of DC failure, has any notion or ability to strengthen our union is absurd,” said campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh. “Because of political pressure from the left, Biden is forced to agree that America was fundamentally flawed from the beginning and remains so today. By contrast, President Trump is proud of our history and believes strongly in our present greatness.”

TALLAHASSEE — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday took steps to help localities prepare for what could be high voter turnout this year, but stopped short of extending early voting or letting counties consolidate polling places in the battleground amid signs that President Donald Trump’s disparagement of mailed ballots could be resonating with Republican voters.
DeSantis called on schools to close during the August primary and November general election to make room for what might be record voter turnout. He also issued an executive order that makes it easier for state employees to work at the polls on Election Day.

DeSantis, a Republican and Trump ally, has been under pressure for months from local election supervisors, who fear the coronavirus pandemic could affect their ability to recruit poll workers and manage balloting in a presidential year.
The announcements were relayed late Wednesday in a letter from Secretary of State Laurel Lee to the state’s 67 election supervisors.
The governor acted after rising pressure from Republican allies, who worry that Florida once again could become a national laughing-stock during the 2020 state and presidential elections.
Citing frightened poll workers and a loss of polling locations, the association that represents state election officials first asked DeSantis in early April to grant them flexibility over early voting, polling locations and the time period for sending out mail-in ballots.
Then Georgia’s primary election was marred by long lines and problems with voting machines, an ominous sign of possible trouble for a state like Florida, which has had its own run of voting calamities, including a chaotic recount that followed the 2000 presidential election.
But the DeSantis administration on Wednesday didn’t act on several suggestions from supervisors, including a request to extend the number of early voting days and consolidate polling places.
Instead, the governor urged local school districts to close on Aug. 18 and Nov. 3 to make it easier to use schools as polling places.
Under the executive order, state workers will be allowed to take administrative leave to serve as poll workers. DeSantis also gave counties the ability to begin counting vote-by-mail ballots slightly before the current starting date. The governor also promised that the state’s emergency management division would provide sanitizers, cleaners and other protective equipment to supervisors.
“It’s very helpful, I’m glad we got a response,” Leon County Supervisor of Elections Mark Earley said. “It gives us something to work with.”
Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo said the governor’s moves didn’t go far enough.
“It’s disappointing the governor will not honor those who fought and died for us to have the right to vote by ensuring that Floridians do not have to endanger themselves to exercise their right to vote,” Rizzo said in a text message. “If the governor was serious about protecting our health and our vote he would expand the executive order to meet the requests of elections supervisors including expanding early voting to reduce lines on Election Day, funding to promote statewide vote-by-mail enrollment and a clear roadmap to conducting free and safe elections.”
DeSantis had another reason to act: There are growing signs that the Republican voters Trump needs to win in the battleground state could abandon vote-by-mail as their preferred way to cast ballots. For decades, Florida Republicans have had a robust vote-by-mail operation, but Trump has spent months vilifying the process as rife with fraud.
During the 2018 election, voting in the state was split roughly three ways between voting by mail, early voting in person and casting a ballot in person on Election Day.
But a June poll from The Tyson Group, an organization run by GOP pollster Ryan Tyson, shows a growing number of Republican voters plan to vote on Election Day while Democrats say they plan to cast their ballots by mail.
The poll, conducted June 7-11, found that 49 percent of likely Republican voters surveyed plan to vote on Election Day itself, compared to 28 percent of Democrats.
Forty percent of Democrats said they plan to vote by mail, compared to 23 percent of Republicans. The Tyson Group interviewed 1,000 registered voters who are expected to or said they would vote in 2020. The margin of error in the poll is plus or minus 3.1 percent.
The governor’s action also comes as he and Florida election officials fight a lawsuit that was filed in the U.S. District Court for Northern Florida by a group of Florida voters, Democratic super PAC Priorities USA and other Democratic-leaning organizations.
The case seeks to throw out state ballot-return deadlines and laws that limit who is allowed to collect vote-by-mail ballots and return them to local election offices. The lawsuit also wants local election officials to pick up the postage cost for returning ballots, something that 17 counties — including urban locales such as Broward and Orange — were already planning to do.
Many election supervisors, both Democrats and Republicans, have opposed the lawsuit, which will go before a judge in late July.
The Republican National Committee and the Republican Party of Florida are also fighting the lawsuit.
DeSantis announced his plan a day after the state Division of Elections told county supervisors it would distribute more than $20.2 million to them on July 1 to take precautions against the coronavirus. Congress provided $400 million in the CARES Act to help states prepare for elections during the outbreak.

]]>JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Researchers on Tuesday announced the first drug shown to save lives among severely ill coronavirus patients, offering hope even as infection rates rose in Africa and Asia, and there were worrisome upticks of contagion in countries that had largely contained the virus.
The cheap, widely available steroid, called dexamethasone, reduced deaths by 35% in patients who needed treatment with breathing machines and by 20% in those only needing supplemental oxygen, the researches said in England. It did not appear to help less ill patients.
“This is an extremely welcome result,” one study leader, Peter Horby of the University of Oxford, said in a statement. “The survival benefit is clear and large in those patients who are sick enough to require oxygen treatment, so dexamethasone should now become standard of care in these patients. Dexamethasone is inexpensive, on the shelf, and can be used immediately to save lives worldwide.”
The study is a large, strict test that randomly assigned 2,104 patients to get the drug and compared them with 4,321 patients getting only usual care. The researchers said they would publish the results soon.
New, record-high infections were registered in South Africa over the weekend despite further loosening of restrictions that opened businesses and houses of worship. The country now has more than a quarter of the cases on the 54-nation African continent with more than 73,000.
“It is imperative that we do not fall into despair as we combat COVID-19,” South African Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told a briefing. “We can never be complacent, never found wanting.”
Those challenges were magnified elsewhere across sub-Saharan Africa with experts warning that the pandemic’s full impact there hasn’t been reached.

Fragile health systems, a “catastrophic” shortage of health care professionals and a dramatic drop in medical imports means that “the health and economic devastation anticipated is yet to unfold,” officials with the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wrote last week in a commentary for the journal Nature Medicine.
Daily coronavirus deaths continued to rise in Egypt, with the health ministry reporting 97 deaths Monday, the country’s highest for a single day. Egypt has over 46,000 COVID-19 infections and 1,672 deaths, but the government has resisted a full lockdown to try to keep the economy functioning. Authorities have shortened the nightly curfew and plan to reopen airports next month.
Israel’s steady raise in infections since restrictions were eased last month has increased fears of what a top Health Ministry official said looked like the “beginning of a wave.”
The country is reporting 200 new cases daily, a tenfold increase from a few weeks ago, and Israeli leaders warned of possibly reinstating strict lockdown measures if people don’t heed calls for people to wear masks, maintain social distancing and wash their hands.
Pakistan’s steady rise in coronavirus cases have put the country in the top 15 nations globally for infections, with over 48,000. Several hospitals have begun refusing patients because they no longer had available beds.
Pakistan’s daily number of infections is nearly 6,000, and one official, Asad Umar, warned that they could top 1.2 million by the end of July.
After fighting the coronavirus for months, Iran saw its highest single-day spike in reported cases since the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan ended in late May, renewing fears about a potential second wave of infections.
Iraq reported 58 deaths Sunday, the most in a 24-hour period since February. According to Health Ministry figures, at least 652 people have died from 21,415 confirmed cases, and the increase in deaths has raised worry that Iraq’s frail health system is not equipped to handle the surge of patients.
Russia’s daily caseload of infections continued to grow, despite a decrease in the city of Moscow, which accounted for about 40% of the country’s 545,000 confirmed cases. Discounting Moscow’s figures, the daily number of new coronavirus cases in Russia has grown to around 7,000 from 6,000 three weeks ago.
Turkey, which has seen an uptick in cases since it eased restrictions in early June, made the wearing of face masks mandatory in five more provinces Tuesday. “We cannot struggle against the virus without masks,” Health Minister Fahrettin Koca tweeted.
Chinese authorities locked down a third neighborhood in Beijing to contain a new coronavirus outbreak that has infected more than 100 people after the country appeared to have largely contained the virus since it first appeared there late last year.
Most of the cases have been linked to Beijing’s Xinfadi wholesale food market, and people lined up for massive testing of anyone who had visited the market in the past two weeks or come in contact with them. About 9,000 workers at the market were tested already.
New Zealand, which hadn’t seen a new case in three weeks, said it is investigating a case in which two women who flew in from London to see a dying parent were allowed to leave quarantine and drive halfway across the country before they were tested and found to be positive.
The re-emergence of the virus in the country that earned widespread praise for how it handled infections raised the specter that international air travel could trigger a fresh COVID-19 wave just as countries are reopening airports to stimulate tourism.
South Korea reported 34 new cases Tuesday. Half were in densely populated Seoul, where officials are scrambling to stem transmissions linked to leisure and religious activities and low-income workers who can’t afford to stay home.
The Seoul government has so far resisted calls to reimpose stronger social distancing guidelines, fearing further economic damage.
The Philippines reimposed a strict lockdown on the city of Cebu after a rise in cases. Quarantine restrictions were reimposed on Manila for another two weeks as infections continued to spike.
“The battle with COVID isn’t over,” Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said.
