National Guard medical teams are assisting staff at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, because of a severe worker shortage caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and wildfires, hospital officials confirmed Thursday.

Deployment of National Guard health care workers at Sonoma County’s largest hospital also comes amid a COVID-19 outbreak among Memorial hospital’s employees that was revealed this week. Although the outbreak that began in early August has further depleted the hospital’s team of about 2,000, hospital officials contended the two issues are not related.

“This is a resource that is being offered to all California hospitals,” Christian Hill, a hospital spokesman said of the guard members. “Our decision to utilize this resource is not connected to the caregiver (coronavirus) exposure at (Memorial Hospital).”

National Guard teams working at Memorial include nurse leaders who manage emergency medical technicians in various units throughout the hospital, Hill said. He didn’t disclose how many of the guard members are working at the hospital.

The guard members also are assisting with simple duties like transporting patients and taking their vital signs, according to employees who requested anonymity for fear of repercussions from hospital leaders.

Despite the pandemic and wildland blazes, the county’s other two large medical centers — Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital — do not need the National Guard to bolster their respective workforces, according to spokespeople at the hospitals.

On Monday, Memorial hospital officials said 17 employees that work in the “1 Center” unit, which is the general surgery area, have been infected by COVID-19. The next day hospital officials confirmed the first virus cases among workers appeared early last month, weeks before the hospital’s CEO sent a bulletin on Aug. 29 to alert the entire organization of the outbreak.

Thus far, Memorial officials have declined to say whether more workers have tested positive for the coronavirus, and if they had, to quantify the extent of the outbreak.

Other hospital employees, also speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the virus indeed has infected workers in other areas of the 300-bed hospital besides general surgery.

Hill said Memorial has completed virus testing of nearly all of the staff in the “identified group of those at risk.”

“The total number of caregivers who have tested positive remains less than 1% of our current workforce (of 2,017) at this time,” he said.

On Aug. 23, Tyler Hedden, Memorial’s CEO, and the chief nursing officer, announced in an internal memorandum that efforts were underway to recruit more workers in response to the “incredible hardship” regarding staffing brought on by the “length of our response to COVID-19, and now the harsh reality of an early beginning to the fire season.”

They pointed out in the memo that hiring traveler nurses has proven more difficult due to “supply and demand Issues” caused by the pandemic and associated travel restrictions, as well as the area housing crunch caused by several years of wildfires.

To help offset the difficult situation, Memorial’s leaders implemented the hospital’s emergency management system protocol and requested additional staffing resources through the Sonoma County Medical Health Operational Area Coordinator. That request led to the assignment of National Guard nurses and technicians under the authority of the California Department of Public Health.

The hospital chief executive and chief nursing officer did not mention the institution’s virus outbreak among staff in their Aug. 23 memo.

Tammera Campbell, a radiologic technologist in Memorial’s imaging department, said her unit is “desperately short-staffed.”

Campbell, who is on the bargaining team of the National Union of Healthcare Workers, said staff has to handle many extra protocols, procedures and precautions required as a result of the pandemic.

“Everything takes longer with COVID,” she said, noting foot traffic patterns through the hospital also have been altered since certain workers can no longer go through the general surgery area because of the infectious disease outbreak there.

Campbell said the outbreak among colleagues, the staffing shortage plus the ongoing pandemic have placed a great deal of stress on hospital employees, and many worry about the virus spreading.

“I came home today. I showered and washed my hair before I kissed my husband,” she said. “That’s what our lives look like outside of work. We are taking risks every day, even when we do it under the safest possible circumstances.”

Late Wednesday, meanwhile, Sonoma County health officials reported six more fatalities related to COVID-19, bringing the pandemic death toll to 89.

All six victims — four women and two men — were over 64, had underlying health conditions and they died between Aug. 19 and Aug. 30. And five of the six were residents of local skilled nursing centers or residential care homes for the elderly.

County health officials again declined to release demographic information and other details about the residents who died, citing federal privacy laws around health care.

Of the 89 deaths of county residents attributed to the coronavirus, 73 have been residents of senior care homes. That share, more than 80%, has been constant throughout the summer among local nursing homes, assisted living centers and board and care homes.

Police in New York have launched an investigation after a flagpole at a memorial honoring five firefighters who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks was cut down by vandals.

The damage at the patriotic display in Washingtonville, north of New York City, was discovered early Wednesday, according to the Times-Herald Record.

Washingtonville Police Chief Brian Zaccaro told the newspaper that those behind the vandalism used a tool to sever the flagpole about five feet from its base and then scrawled a message on the part left standing.

Police would not disclose the nature of the message, but did reveal that an eagle figure attached to the flagpole was found next to a toppled sign at the St. Mary’s Parish Center about a half-mile away.

“These two locations mean so much to Washingtonville and the larger community,” New York State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt, whose district includes the area, said in a press release.

Washingtonville Mayor Joseph Bucco said the village will replace the damaged flagpole and a $3,000 reward is being offered for information about the incident and the suspects, the Times-Herald Record reported.

The memorial features a semi-circle of granite monuments honoring five members of the New York City Fire Department – firefighters Mark Whitford, Bobby Hamilton and Gerry Nevins, Batallion Chief Dennis Devlin and Lt. Glenn Perry, the newspaper adds.

After easing restrictions on visitors earlier this month, Sarasota Memorial Hospital is reversing course and limiting visitation again amid an increase in COVID-19 patients.

Sarasota Memorial was treating 36 COVID-19 patients on Thursday, more than triple the number of patients hospitalized with the disease at the beginning of the month.

The hospital’s COVID-19 caseload peaked at 43 patients on May 10 and May 11 before dropping through the end of May. On June 1 Sarasota Memorial was down to 10 COVID-19 patients, with none in the intensive care unit.

But since then COVID-19 hospitalizations have been on the rise. So starting Monday, Sarasota Memorial will reinstate a “no visitors” policy that prohibits visitation “except in special circumstances.”

“SMH is taking a proactive approach to reduce risks of exposure by significantly reducing the number of people in the facility,” the hospital said in a press release. “The temporary changes are part of the health system’s ongoing effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and safeguard the health of patients, families, staff and the community.”

The change comes as the number of new coronavirus infections statewide, and in both Sarasota and Manatee counties, has been setting daily records.

The spike in coronavirus cases in Florida, Arizona, Oregon and other Southern and Western states can be traced back to around Memorial Day, when officials began loosening their lockdowns, health experts said Monday.

And in about two weeks, hospitals in those states could find themselves struggling to find enough beds for patients, one of the nation’s top public health experts warned.

“In some smaller Southern towns, the per capita rates of infections could be as high as New York City was at its peak,” Dr. Erik Toner of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security said.

In the last 14 days, Oregon has reported a 234.4 percentage jump in infections, Oklahoma jumped by 202 percent, Florida’s number increased by 155 percent, and Arizona’s confirmed coronavirus cases climbed by 142 percent, according to an NBC News analysis of state health department figures.

Texas, Utah, Arkansas, Louisiana and more than a dozen other states — as well as Guam and the Virgin Islands — had increases in the numbers of reported cases in the last two weeks.

“It’s basically the same reason for all these states: It was Memorial Day,” Toner said. “And in the last week of May, most states began to seriously relax community mitigation efforts.”

Toner said that as lockdowns are relaxed, “we will see a rise in coronavirus cases.”

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

“The question is how high will they rise,” he said. “Oregon, for example, has done a good job of dealing with the pandemic, and if people adhere to wearing face masks and social distancing, it may not be bad. But some Southern and Western states have gone out of their way to not wear face masks or practice social distancing, and we expect it to be much worse.”

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, a Democrat, delayed reopening four of the state’s most populous counties this month when cases started to climb.

The Republican governors of Arizona and Florida have move been more aggressive with reopening, sometimes over the objections of local hospital officials.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, warned Monday that “additional measures are going to be necessary” and that he may clamp down on businesses that don’t require masks if the number of cases continues to climb.

“There are certain counties where a majority of the people who are tested positive in that county are under the age of 30, and this typically results from people going to bars,” Abbott said.

Abbott last week blamed Memorial Day celebrations, along with a rise in the number of prison inmates who contracted the virus, for the dismal new data.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, announced Monday that he would delay the next phase of the state’s reopening for 28 days.

“This remains a very contagious disease,” Edwards said. “There are a lot of people out there saying they are done with this virus. Well, the virus isn’t done with us.”

Just a couple weeks ago, the governor reported that the state had escaped from Memorial Day unscathed.

Dr. Paul Cieslak, senior health adviser to the Oregon Health Authority, said Oregon’s “recent rise in cases is due to a combination of many factors.”

“We’ve had quite a few workplace outbreaks, increased contact tracing and testing, a large outbreak in Union County and finally just more community spread,” Cieslak said. “But we still have a very low per capita case and death count and have the fifth-lowest cases per capita among states as measured by the CDC.”

President Donald Trump and allies, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, have attributed the rise in cases to more testing, a claim most health experts say is at best partly true.

Ducey also suggested another uniquely Arizona reason for the spread of the virus last week. “We’re indoors in the summers,” he said.

Ducey, as well as DeSantis and Abbott, have all insisted that their states have enough intensive care beds to handle any surge.

But DeSantis has also changed his state’s guidelines for ICU reporting. From now on, DeSantis doesn’t want the hospitals to report the number of patients in ICU beds. He wants hospitals to report the number of patients who require an “intensive level of care.”

Florida passed 100,000 coronavirus cases Monday and has recorded more than 3,170 deaths.

BOLIVAR, Mo. – A nurse on the medical/surgical unit for Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar has tested positive for COVID-19.

Citizens Memorial Hospital administration says the nurse is at home recovering in quarantine. The source of infection is believed to be travel-related.

According to CMH, the nurse worked on the unit Wednesday, June 17, and participated in a CPR class Thursday morning, June 18, before showing symptoms.

CMH infection prevention staff are working closely with the Polk County health leaders and contacting CMH co-workers, patients and others who may have been in close contact. CMH will be closely monitoring co-workers for symptoms.

“We are working to ensure the safety of our patients and employees during these challenging times,” says Gary Fulbright, CEO/executive director of CMH and CMH Foundation. “As COVID-19 cases rise in the area it is not entirely unexpected that we would have cases confirmed in our caregivers. We are prepared and have protocols in place to protect our employees, patients, residents and the community.”

CMH employees are screened each shift for COVID-19 symptoms and also have their temperature taken before being allowed to work and wear a mask.

Some of the nation’s most iconic monuments were defaced over the weekend as roving rioters spread to the National Mall, leaving a trail of vandalism in their wake.

Photos posted Saturday by the National Park Service showed spray-painted messages on the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial and the statue of Gen. Casimir Pulaski.

“In the wake of last night’s demonstrations, there are numerous instances of vandalism to sites around the National Mall,” said the NPS post. “For generations the Mall has been our nation’s premier civic gathering space for non-violent demonstrations, and we ask individuals to carry on that tradition.”

The messages included, “Yall not tired yet?” and “Do Black Vets Count?” as well as profanities.

An Associated Press photo taken near the Washington Monument showed the spray-painted slogan, “No More Black Bodies.”

Dozens of U.S. cities have seen peaceful protests over the death of George Floyd, a black man killed on Memorial Day while in Minneapolis police custody, devolve under cover of night into rioting, vandalism, fire-setting and assaults.

As states around the country ease up on coronavirus lockdowns, Memorial Day weekend festivities attracted large crowds with many people flocking to beaches, bars and other public spaces while forgoing rules on social distancing and wearing masks in public.

Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri

A jampacked pool party at a bar in Lake of the Ozarks has health officials in Missouri calling for revelers to self-quarantine. St. Louis County issued a travel advisory following the Memorial Day weekend celebration at Backwater Jack’s in Osage Beach.

The bar threw a “Zero Ducks Given Pool Party” on Saturday, which drew a large crowd of partygoers, many of whom did not appear to be following the social distancing guidelines. In an advisory, officials said that anyone from the St. Louis area who attended the party should quarantine for 14 days or until they are given a negative test result for COVID-19.

“This reckless behavior endangers countless people and risks setting us back substantially from the progress we have made in slowing the spread of COVID-19,” Dr. Sam Page, the county executive, said in a statement.

Ocean City, Maryland

A boardwalk in Ocean City was crowded over the weekend, with many people not wearing masks. The city opened its boardwalk and beach to the public in early May and also lifted restrictions on hotels, motels and other rental properties to accommodate the crowds, NBC Washington reported.

Social distancing rules still remain in effect in Ocean City, but photos from the weekend showed hundreds of people strolling the boardwalk.

Houston

A Houston club came under fire after a video surfaced of a packed pool party it hosted over the weekend. Texas is one of many states that has relaxed its stay-at-home order and reopened businesses, including bars and clubs, to a 25 percent capacity.

It’s not clear what percentage of capacity Clé Houston had reached during its party on Saturday. Mayor Sylvester Turner has threatened to close Houston businesses that do not follow state guidelines.

Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said on Twitter that the department responded to about 300 complaints of violations of the governor’s reopening orders during the Memorial Day weekend.

Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey

Hundreds of people gathered in Point Pleasant Beach, along the Jersey Shore, to protest the state’s COVID-19 restrictions and to demand Gov. Phil Murphy reopen the state.

Many of those at the rally held flags and signs and seemed to ignore rules that people stay at least 6 feet apart.

According to NBC’s Kathy Park, organizers of the rally said they gathered to help small businesses who are struggling. “They’re hurting b/c this is when they make most of their profit,” organizers said.

Daytona Beach, Florida

Authorities in Daytona Beach also spent Memorial Day weekend breaking up large crowds after hundreds of people gathered at a popular Florida boardwalk, according to NBC Miami. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office in DeLand assisted police in Daytona with dispersing large crowds.

A video released by the sheriff’s office showed roughly 200 people packed on a street outside of a store.

While some revelers ignored social distancing and mask rules, beachgoers in Clearwater, Florida, seemed to abide by the guidelines. The city’s police department posted a video on Monday showing large spaces between beachgoers who were separated by cones.

Memorial Day, observed the last Monday in May, honors the men and women who died in service to their country.

The day traces its roots to the period after the Civil War when the head of an organization of Union veterans established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to mark the graves of the war dead with flowers. The day of May 30 was selected. Other cities around the country, both Union and Confederate, held similar observances.

The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. As time progressed, the day became a time to honor all those who lost their lives in America’s ward.

Memorial Day, also seen as the unofficial start of summer, was observed on May 30 for years until 1968 when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The act moved Memorial Day to the last Monday in May.

Memorial Day also includes a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time.

Here are some of the best quotes, remembrances and inspiration for Memorial Day 2020:

“Memorial Day isn’t just about honoring veterans, its honoring those who lost their lives. Veterans had the fortune of coming home. For us, that’s a reminder of when we come home we still have a responsibility to serve. It’s a continuation of service that honors our country and those who fell defending it.” – Pet Hegseth

“We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us.“ – Winston S. Churchill

“Our obligations to our country never cease but with our lives.“ – John Adams

“To every family member of the fallen, I want you to know that the legacy of those you lost does not fade with time, but grows only more powerful. Their legacy does not, like a voice in the distance, become a faint echo. But, instead, their legacy grows deeper, spreading further, touching more lives, reaching down through time and out across many generations. Through their sacrifice, your loved ones have achieved something very, very special: immortality.” – – Donald Trump

“Our nation owes a debt to its fallen heroes that we can never fully repay.”- Barack Obama

“Honor to the soldier and sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause. Honor, also, to the citizen who cares for his brother in the field and serves, as he best can, the same cause.“ – Abraham Lincoln

“A man’s country is not a certain area of land, of mountains, rivers, and woods, but it is a principle and patriotism is loyalty to that principle.”- George William Curtis

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter the words, but to live by them.” – John F. Kennedy

“The highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country.“ – George S. Patton Jr.

“The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.”– Jeff Miller

“Patriotism is not short, frenzied outburts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.” – Adlai Stevenson

“These fallen heroes represent the character of a nation who has a long history of patriotism and honor – and a nation who has fought many battles to keep our country free from threats of terror.” – Michael Castle

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”- Joseph Campbell

“It doesn’t take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle.”- Norman Schwarzkopf

“America is hope. It is compassion. It is excellence. It is valor.” – Paul Tsongas

“Heroes may not be braver than anyone else. They’re just braver 5 minutes longer.“ – Ronald Reagan

“My country owes me nothing. It gave me, as it gives every boy and girl, a chance. It gave me schooling, independence of action, opportunity for service and honor.“ – Herbert Hoover
