Jefferson Parish officials held a press conference on Monday to discuss the coronavirus pandemic and its effects on the parish. Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng said the coroner Gerald “Gerry” Cvitanovich is worried deaths may spike from COVID-19 in the parish over the next two weeks. This comes after the July Fourth holiday weekend and an overall spike in cases in southeast Louisiana. According to Cvitanovich, in the last two weeks he has seen five deaths attributed to the coronavirus. He said with the increase in cases that he expects deaths to also increase. “Everybody’s fear is you just know that those people under 30 and put them at risk and unfortunately I think we’re starting to see that come to fruition,” said Cvitanovich. “This past week it’s up to 19% of total positives.”Sheng said last week was the first time since the beginning of the pandemic in Louisiana that Jefferson Parish saw over 1,100 cases in the parish. According to Sheng, the parish has partnered with a new company to help expedite testing result turnarounds this week. The parish also created their own dashboard to track coronavirus numbers in the parish. The website can be found here. Sheng put a mask mandate in place a few weeks ago as well as a hotline to report businesses that are not in compliance with phase two restrictions. According to Sheng, there have been 2,599 complaints of businesses not in compliance. Sheng warned that those who do not follow the mask mandate could face a misdemeanor summons. As of Monday, Jefferson Parish has 11,256 cases of COVID-19. There have been nearly 500 deaths in the parish.
