]]>Liberty University owes Jerry Falwell Jr. a total of about $10.5 million over the next two years after he resigned as president of the nation’s largest evangelical college following several scandals, according to a person close to Mr. Falwell with knowledge of his employment contract.
Mr. Falwell is due his $1.25 million salary for two years, followed by a lump-sum payment of about $8 million, because of a clause in his contract that allowed him to resign with full pay if his responsibilities were curtailed, which they were when he was put on an indefinite leave of absence two weeks ago, the person said.

Mr. Falwell has agreed to consult for the school during its transition to a new administration, the person added.
A spokesman for Liberty didn’t respond to requests for comment, including about how much the school might owe Mr. Falwell in compensation following his resignation.
In a written statement, school officials said the board of trustees met via conference call on Tuesday and unanimously accepted Mr. Falwell’s resignation. The statement said the board “used most of its meeting to focus forward on the university’s future and steps that could be taken to ensure it remained true to its mission.”
Mr. Falwell resigned Monday after a series of scandals involving his social-media posts and accusations about his personal behavior.

In an interview late Monday night, Mr. Falwell said he wouldn’t have to sue to get paid. “I didn’t break any rules — I get my compensation,” he said. He noted earlier Monday that some rules that apply to Liberty students, like a ban on alcohol, don’t apply to staff.
Some alumni, students and former employees reacted with relief that Mr. Falwell, the son of the school’s founder and one of President Trump’s most ardent evangelical supporters, was gone. Allegations about his personal behavior had mounted throughout August, and he was placed on an indefinite leave of absence earlier this month before resigning on Monday.
Brooke Smoke, who resumed classes at the Lynchburg, Va., campus this week along with thousands of other students, said she hoped the school would make major changes in Mr. Falwell’s wake.

“I’m hoping they’ll focus more on the Christian aspect of Liberty and not the political aspect,” said Ms. Smoke, a 22-year-old senior.
Johnnie Moore, an alumnus and former senior vice president at Liberty, expressed confidence that the school could move on and thrive. “Liberty would not exist but for the Falwells,” he said. “Yet, the brilliance of its original mission and vision was transcended long ago by the scope of education and service that the University has delivered to its students and community.”
But the school may face internal disagreements about how best to move forward.
Dustin Wahl, an alumnus who founded an organization, Save71, devoted to ousting Mr. Falwell, said people in the administration and on the board of trustees had failed to hold Mr. Falwell accountable and they weren’t the right people to put the school on a new course. The name of the group refers to 1971, the year Liberty was founded.
“The board as a whole needs to be purged for the school to move in a good direction,” Mr. Wahl said. He also called for an independent legal inquiry into Mr. Falwell’s tenure.
Mr. Falwell’s compensation has swelled as Liberty grew into an online learning juggernaut during his tenure. In 2008, his first full year as head of the university, he earned just $271,000 in pay and benefits, according to tax filings.
Liberty enrolls more than 47,000 undergraduates and 38,000 graduate students, according to the latest available federal figures from fall 2019. Of those students, 72% of undergraduates and 94% of graduates study exclusively online.
The school earns about $1.2 billion in revenue annually, about 84% of which comes from tuition and fees, the tax filing covering fiscal 2018 shows. Its assets total more than $2.8 billion.
Much of the university’s revenue is bolstered by federal student aid. In the 2020 school year, Liberty undergraduate and students received $676 million in federal student loans, federal data show. That’s the third most of any school in the country after Grand Canyon University and Arizona State University and more than 27 times what its students received two decades ago, accounting for inflation.

Several other members of the Falwell family are involved with Liberty. Mr. Falwell’s son, Jerry “Trey” Fallwell III, a vice president at the university, earned $189,000 in pay and benefits according to the tax filing. Another son, Wesley Falwell, and two daughters-in-law earned five-figure sums. Mr. Falwell’s brother, Jonathan Falwell, serves on the board.

]]>Evangelical leader Jerry Falwell Jr. sought to sever business ties with a Miami Beach hotel pool attendant who had an affair with his wife in 2015 just before Donald Trump launched his White House bid, according to a report Tuesday.
POLITICO based its report on an interview with Giancarlo Granda who says his affair with Becki Falwell began in 2012 when he was 20 and that a year later she and Falwell put up money for a Miami youth hostel that he co-owned with Falwell’s son Trey.
Granda, 29, told the news outlet that at a meeting at Loews Miami Beach Hotel in May 2015, Falwell surprised him by offering to buy out his share in the hostel.

Granda said at the meeting Falwell also told him that Trump was planning to run for president.
Granda told POLITICO the two events appeared to him to be connected: Falwell was trying to remove evidence of his family’s ties to Granda in anticipation of getting involved in politics, which could invite greater scrutiny of his activities.
“Jerry Falwell Jr. admired Trump’s strongman public persona,” Granda said, according to the news outlet. “Also, there was a noticeable personality change after Trump was elected. He was drunk on power and felt like he could get away with anything.”
The news outlet reported that according to Granda, he agreed to the buyout but Falwell never delivered the cash to close the deal.
POLITICO reported that Falwell never responded to its requests for comment.
A Falwell attorney did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment from Fox News.
In a statement Saturday Falwell, 58, said his wife had an “inappropriate personal relationship” with Granda “something in which I was not involved.” Becki Falwell is 53.
He also said members of his family cut Granda in on a real estate deal in Miami because Granda could manage it.
And Falwell said Granda demanded “monies” in exchange for not divulging the affair.

Tuesday afternoon, Falwell confirmed he had resigned as president of Liberty University, the conserviate Christian college in Virginia. He had taken a leave this month after posting a photo onlilne showing him with his pants unzippered and his arm around a young woman’s neck.
POLITICO reported that Granda admitted sometimes growing angry with the Falwells but that the only money he attempted to obtain from them was the buyout money.
“I was struggling with my mental health at the time and said some regrettable things, but I was hopeless and at times felt like the only way I could break away from their ‘hold,’ was by lashing out at them or ending my life,” Granda said, according to the news outlet.
Granda said Falwell would watch when he had sex with his wife and that he would do so in person and on video.

“He enjoyed watching us in person and also remotely through video cameras. He also listened to our phone calls,” Granda said, according to POLITICO.
The news outlet reported that Granda declined to say how much of his relationship with the Falwells involved him and Becki exclusively, without Jerry present.

]]>It appears that Jerry Falwell Jr. has finally resigned as president of Liberty University after a day of conflicting media reports triggered by a salacious sex-and-blackmail scandal.
Mr. Falwell told ABC News he has agreed to step down from his leadership posts at the evangelical Christian university in Lynchburg, Virginia, founded by his late father Jerry Falwell Sr..
“I was never called to be a pastor, my calling was to use my legal and business expertise to make Liberty University the evangelical version of Notre Dame,” Mr. Falwell said in a late Monday post on ABC News. “Some of us are called to be preachers, that wasn’t mine. I was called to make Liberty University the greatest Christian university’s [sic] in the world and I couldn’t have done that as a preacher.”
The university said in a late Monday statement that Mr. Falwell initially agreed to step down from his posts, including his position on the Board of Trustees, but changed his mind after media reports emerged Monday about the resignation.
“On the first day of classes of Liberty University’s fall term, Jerry Falwell, Jr., agreed to resign as its President and from its Board of Directors, but following media reports about the resignation, withdrew it,” said the university in a late Monday statement.
The Board of Trustees plans to meet Tuesday to discuss the situation involving the son of late Liberty founder Jerry Falwell Sr., who was placed on an indefinite leave of absence Aug. 7.
The leave of absence was triggered by a photo he posted of himself and his wife’s female assistant posing with their pants unzipped and midriffs exposed, which he later described as a joke, but in a Sunday statement to the Examiner, Mr. Falwell said his family was being blackmailed by his wife’s former lover.
“The Executive Committee’s Board of Trustees asked Falwell to go on indefinite leave of absence on August 7, to which he agreed,” said the statement. “Since that time, additional matters came to light that made it clear that it would not be in the best interest of the University for him to return from leave and serve as President.”

Said acting President Jerry Prevo: “I call upon the University community and supporters to be in prayer for the University and for all its leadership, past, present and future, as we walk with the Lord through this stormy time of transition.”
Unnamed school officials told several media outlets, including the Associated Press and Religion News Service, that Mr. Falwell had resigned, but within hours, he told Virginia Business and Politico that he had not agreed to step down.
In its Monday statement, the university said “Falwell responded by agreeing to resign immediately as President of Liberty University today but then instructed his attorneys to not tender the letter for immediate resignation.”
The executive committee plans to meet Tuesday morning followed by a meeting of the full Board, according to the university.
In his Sunday statement, Mr. Falwell said his wife admitted to having an affair with a young man who later became a family friend and business associate, but that he had threatened to expose the relationship unless the Falwells paid him.
“Over the course of the last few months this person’s behavior has reached a level that we have decided the only way to stop this predatory behavior is to go public,” said Mr. Falwell. “We have categorically rejected this person’s demands while dealing with him and this particular member of the media who seemed just as obsessed with the prurient, untrue aspects of this story, however fantastic.”
Also on Sunday, Giancarlo Ganda told Reuters that he had an affair with Becki Falwell after meeting the couple in 2012 while he worked as a pool boy at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach 2012, but that Mr. Falwell knew about the relationship and “enjoyed watching from the corner of the room.”

]]>Jerry Falwell Jr., a real estate developer who became a passionate defender of President Trump and took over a Christian university meant to evangelize the world, agreed to resign during negotiations Monday, according to a university official, after a series of sordid scandals rocked the huge school he has led since 2007. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations, later said there was a holdup to finalizing negotiations, and Falwell said later Monday night that no agreement was in place.
Opposition to his presidency had been growing but came to a dramatic head after two new reports about a young man Falwell and his wife befriended at a Florida pool, went into business with and who allegedly was sexually connected to the couple. One report painted Falwell as the victim of an obsessive affair; the other as an eager participant manipulating a naive young man.
At the last minute, Falwell’s purported exit became complicated. Reached by phone Monday night, Falwell said he is not resigning. He referred further questions to his public relations team, which has not issued a comment. According to the university official, a resignation process had started, then broke down. Discussions between the two sides continued into Monday evening.
Falwell had been placed on paid leave Aug. 7 after he posted a provocative picture of himself and his wife’s assistant on social media. Both had their zippers partially down and Falwell was holding a dark beverage he joked was nonalcoholic and “a prop only.” Drinking or being around alcohol as well as sexual promiscuity are banned for students under Liberty’s personal code of conduct. Liberty board members had said in a statement Friday that they were investigating.
Liberty University was founded in 1971 to “train champions for Christ,” and many at the school revere the memory of Falwell’s father, Jerry Falwell Sr., the prominent evangelist who was one of the school’s founders. Monday was Liberty’s first day of classes.
For many years, Falwell was best known for lifting the university out of debt, shoring up its finances, improving its physical campus and leading a dramatic growth in enrollment.
He made national headlines when he endorsed Trump in 2016, one of the first prominent evangelicals to do so. He also garnered criticism for the endorsement from students and graduates. A former chairman of Liberty’s executive committee, Mark DeMoss, resigned over the endorsement, saying Trump’s campaign was a rejection of the values the university promotes.
A series of scandals increased concern among some graduates, students and other supporters of the university.
At a Liberty convocation in 2015, Falwell said the San Bernardino, Calif., shooting that year could have been prevented if people had concealed-carry permits and had guns to “end those Muslims before they walked in killing.”
In May, Falwell tweeted a photo of a face mask decorated with an image of a person in Ku Klux Klan robes and another in blackface, in an attempt to taunt Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) over his blackface scandal in connection with a medical school yearbook. Falwell deleted the tweet and apologized, but several students and staff members left the school in protest.
The board faced increased pressure to take action, with pastors and influential supporters including Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.), a Southern Baptist minister and former Liberty instructor, calling for his resignation. A group of graduates, Save71, called for Falwell’s permanent removal. “We put no faith in riches or comfort, in status or power,” they wrote. “We put our faith in Christ alone, and we want Liberty University to follow Him.”
Sunday night, a columnist at the conservative Washington Examiner published an exclusive statement from Falwell saying he has been seeking counseling after finding out his wife, Becki, had an affair with a man the couple met in 2012. In the piece Falwell characterized the relationship as akin to “fatal attraction” and said the man threatened to reveal the affair if they didn’t pay him hefty sums.
The column quoted the man, who has been identified in previous reporting by Politico, BuzzFeed and others as Giancarlo Granda, as denying Falwell’s allegations.
On Monday, Reuters quoted Granda as saying that from 2012 until 2018 he had a sexual relationship with Becki Falwell — one about which her husband knew all along. According to Reuters, Granda denied any intent to extort the Falwells and said he was intending to negotiate a buyout from his business arrangement.
Becki Falwell did not return calls or text messages for comment Monday. Efforts to reach Granda on Monday were not successful.
Robert Jeffress, a Southern Baptist pastor in Dallas who also supports Trump, said he has high regard for the university and has spoken there several times. He said was unaware of Granda’s allegations about Falwell and his wife.
“Jerry has done a great job in building a tremendous school,” Jeffress said. “The allegations, if true, should be a warning of the destructive power of sin.”
Karen Swallow Prior, an English professor who worked for the university for 21 years, said that morale at the school has been low under Falwell’s “authoritarian” leadership. She said that frustration has been building over the past several months, but there were several recent incidents that particularly upset Liberty students and graduates.
She said that Falwell’s behavior often played out on social media, and the school’s leadership was often ignorant of how he treated some people.
“It’s been months, if not years, of having a leader whose power and words have been unchecked,” said Prior, who now works for Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.
After graduating from the University of Virginia Law School in 1987, Falwell became a commercial real estate developer and lawyer. At Liberty, where he became general counsel, he used his business acumen to make tireless efforts to get the school out of debt that in the 1990s was reported to be as high as $100 million.
He pursued grants, cultivated relationships with big donors, and closely studied the market for various educational programs Liberty could start.
Part of the affinity Liberty’s students and staff had for him stemmed from the feeling that he was a big reason for Liberty’s recovery. After decades of crippling debt, it now has endowment assets of $1.6 billion — up from $6.3 million when he took over in 2007.

]]>Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr., a prominent and controversial evangelical Christian supporter of President Trump, will take an indefinite leave of absence from the university after posting a provocative photo to social media where his pants were unzipped, his midriff was out, and he is standing next to a woman holding a glass of dark liquid.
The school issued a brief statement saying that the executive committee of Liberty’s board of trustees met Friday and requested that Falwell take leave. That committee of eight people includes Falwell, according to the school’s website.
Since taking over as president of the school in 2007, Falwell has vastly expanded the size and scope of the university co-founded by his father, the televangelist Jerry Falwell Sr., in 1971. It is now one of the largest private online universities in the country.
Liberty also claims to be one of the largest Christianity universities in the world. Its chapel stage has become a pilgrimage site for many politicians, attracting Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and GOP presidential contenders in recent years.
Falwell was one of the first high-profile leaders in the evangelical world to endorse Trump in 2016. But while his father was a revered religious leader, he sees himself purely as a businessman and lawyer. His brother Jonathan Falwell, a Liberty board member who has filled the pastoral role his father once held, has been quiet about Jerry Falwell Jr.’s recent behavior.
But Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.), a Southern Baptist minister and former Liberty instructor, called for Falwell’s resignation, alluding to several scandals, including the recent social media post, which has been deleted from Falwell’s account but has been recirculated by many others.
“Jerry Falwell Jr’s ongoing behavior is appalling,” Walker, the vice chairman of the powerful House Republican Caucus, wrote on Twitter. “I’m convinced Falwell should step down.”
Falwell faced his first notable controversy during a speech in 2015. At a university convocation, he said the San Bernardino shooting that year would not have occurred if more people had concealed-carry permits to “end those Muslims before they walked in killing.”
Following Trump’s election, Falwell ramped up his attempts to silence any campus dissent from the school’s staunch conservative positions, the former editor of Liberty’s student newspaper wrote in an opinion piece for The Washington Post.
He allowed students to stay on campus during the coronavirus pandemic this spring, despite promises to local officials that he would do otherwise, drawing condemnation and a class-action lawsuit.
It was so upsetting to Erik Rolf’s daughter, who was a sophomore this last semester, that she recently transferred to the University of Lynchburg. Rolf, noting Liberty’s code of conduct that specifies how students can dress, said Friday that if any Liberty students or faculty were in the photos Falwell had tweeted, “I’m sure they would’ve been tossed.”
“Falwell has built quite an empire but no small of hypocrisy and denial, which is serious when you have to take care of kids and the surrounding community,” he said.
In May, Falwell tweeted a photo of a face mask decorated with a photo of a person in Ku Klux Klan robes and another in blackface, in an attempt to taunt Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) over his blackface scandal. Falwell deleted the tweet and apologized, but several of his Black staff left the school.
After he posted the provocative photos from his vacation this week, White evangelical leaders openly criticized him on social media.
Colby Garman, a pastor and executive committee member of the Virginia Southern Baptist Convention, echoed Walker’s call for Falwell to step down. Liberty graduate Dean Inserra, a megachurch pastor in Florida, urged the university board members to “show some courage.” Bible teacher Beth Moore wrote, “I just want everybody to zip up their pants is all.”
Speaking to the Lynchburg, Va., radio station WLNI, Falwell said the woman in the photo was his “wife’s assistant” — and, he said, the inspiration for undoing his pants zipper and exposing his stomach.
“She’s pregnant, so she couldn’t get her pants up,” he said as the host chuckled. “And I had on a pair of jeans that I hadn’t worn in a long time, so I couldn’t get mine zipped, either. And so I just put my belly out like hers.”
“She’s a sweetheart,” he added, “and I should never have put it up and embarrassed her.”

]]>Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr. joined “Hannity” Wednesday to explain why the school filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against The New York Times over its coverage of the university’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Not only are they a bigoted bunch of liars, and also [a] BuzzFeed type click bait publication now,” Falwell told host Sean Hannity. “But they’re also stupid, because they came on campus. We had 25, at least, ‘No Trespassing’ signs everywhere, and they were dumb enough to take pictures of the signs and publish them.
“So we got warrants out for their arrest and they had to cut a deal with a local prosecutor to keep from going to jail,” Falwell added. “That’s how dumb they are.”

The lawsuit, filed in the Virginia Circuit Court, cites the Times’ March 29 story headlined, “Liberty University Brings Back Its Students, and Coronavirus Fears, Too.”
The story reported that about 12 students “were sick with symptoms that suggested Covid-19,” when the school reopened its doors. The lawsuit alleges the Times misrepresented a doctor cited in the report and did not speak to the school physician.
“They were here for a few days,” Falwell explained to Hannity. “I think they got their information from a doctor who has a practice 10 miles away from Liberty, who had seen a few Liberty kids who had a cold and upper respiratory problem. And none of it was anything like COVID symptoms … he told the reporters to go and talk to our on-campus doctor at our clinic on campus, and they wouldn’t do it. They didn’t talk to us.
“We tried to get them to correct all the false headlines … They wouldn’t do it. They actually doubled down and lied some more. And so we had no choice,” Falwell added. “They left us with no choice but to defend our reputation because it scared parents.”

Falwell said that approximately 1,200 students finished out the spring semester on campus and no cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed.
“Some of them had elderly relatives living at home and didn’t have high-speed Internet, so they couldn’t do online education at home [or] they were international students, had no choice,” Falwell said. “But out of 8,000 normally here, we had about 1,200 here this spring. We abided by all the governor’s rules and not one case, not one case came out of it.”

]]>House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler on Monday evening said he’s preparing to subpoena Attorney General William P. Barr to compel him to testify about the recent firing of former U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman.
“We have begun the process to issue that subpoena,” Mr. Nadler said on MSNBC. “We are doing that.”
Mr. Nadler had said his committee would open an investigation into the firing of Mr. Berman, the former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. Democrats are alleging that the administration is trying to hamper investigations into President Trump or his associates that might have been ongoing or in the works.
Rep. Jim Jordan, the top Republican on the committee, blasted the move in a letter to Mr. Nadler on Monday evening that indicated the subpoena would compel Mr. Barr to testify at a July 2 hearing.
Mr. Jordan said Mr. Barr had previously agreed to testify voluntarily at a hearing in March before the meeting was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Attorney General Barr remains willing to testify voluntarily once the pandemic concludes,” he wrote. “Accordingly, there is no legitimate basis for you to compel his testimony at this time.”
The committee is holding a hearing titled “Oversight of the Department of Justice: Political Interference and Threats to Prosecutorial Independence” on Wednesday.
Mr. Barr on Friday had announced Mr. Berman would step down, but Mr. Berman initially refused to do so.
On Saturday, Mr. Berman said he was leaving after Mr. Trump fired him.
On Monday, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Mr. Berman was ousted because Jay Clayton, Mr. Trump’s pick to replace him, wanted to go back to New York City and the administration wanted to keep Mr. Clayton in the government.
She said Mr. Barr was taking the lead on the process but that the president was involved in a “sign-off” capacity.
Mr. Clayton is the current chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and prospects for his winning Senate confirmation have already run into roadblocks.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham said he plans to respect the “blue slip” process for the nomination, where home-state senators get informal veto power over nominees.
Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said he would not return a blue slip for Mr. Clayton, and both he and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, New York Democrat, have called on Mr. Clayton to pull his name from consideration.
