]]>BALTIMORE (AP) — A “major gas explosion” completely destroyed three row houses in Baltimore on Monday, killing a woman, injuring several other people and trapping at least one person in the wreckage, firefighters said.
At least three dozen firefighters converged on the disaster scene, where the natural gas explosion reduced to the homes to piles of rubble and pieces of debris. A fourth house in the row was partly destroyed, and the neighborhood was strewn with glass from shattered windows.
Two of the homes’ occupants were taken to hospitals in serious condition, while an adult woman was pronounced dead at the scene, the fire department tweeted.
The firefighters’ union tweeted that special rescue operation units were searching for other people.
The Baltimore Gas and Electric Company received an “initial call” from the fire department at 9:54 a.m. on Monday and was working to turn off the gas to buildings in the immediate area, its spokeswoman Linda Foy said.
“We are on the scene and working closely with the fire department to make the situation safe,” she said, without answering any questions from reporters. “Once the gas is off, we can begin to safely assess the situation, including inspections of BGE equipment.”
Moses Glover was inside his nearby home when he heard a boom and looked outside his window. Suddenly, a second blast knocked him off his feet, he told The Baltimore Sun.
“It knocked me across the bed,” said Glover, 77. “I came downstairs and saw all of the front of the houses across the street, they were on the ground. I had a picture window downstairs, the glass is in the chair now.”
Moses struggled to steady his breathing and said he was “shook up” by the experience.

]]>A gas explosion in Baltimore has left adults and children trapped, according to reports.
Fox Baltimore reports that medical units have been called to the scene and Baltimore County firefighters have been called to help. One woman was confirmed dead following the explosion.
“Several houses exploded. At least 5 people trapped, some children. A Collapse Respose and Second Alarm has been called,” tweeted Baltimore Firefighters IAFF Local 734. The tweet was retweeted by the Baltimore Office of Emergency Management.
The explosion killed one person and injured several others, the Baltimore city fire union reports. Firefighters were in contact with a person trapped in the rubble, the union reported. The explosion appears to have leveled several homes, according to the union.
It happened around 10 a.m. in the northeast part of Baltimore.

Witnesses told WJZ-TV they heard a loud explosion and heard the ground shake.

]]>At least 21 people suffered minor injuries on Sunday after an explosion and fire broke out on the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego, military officials said.
“Seventeen Sailors and four civilians are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. All inport ships have been contacted and directed to provide fire parties to possibly assist with firefighting efforts,” the Navy said in a statement.

The blaze was reported on the ship shortly before 9 a.m., said Krishna Jackson, the base’s public information officer. As of Sunday evening, the fire had yet to be contained.

Later Sunday, the Navy said two guided-missile destroyers were moved away from the Bonhomme Richard after it caught fire. One of the warships forced to switch births was the USS Fitzgerald, which had just returned to the fleet following a collision at sea off the coast of Japan three years ago that killed seven sailors.
“At approximately 1:00 p.m., USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) shifted berths to a pier further away from the fire. USS Russell (DDG 59) moved approximately 30 minutes later,” the Navy said.

U.S. Pacific Fleet Naval Surface Forces had tweeted earlier that 18 sailors “have been transferred to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” adding that 160 were on board at the time of the explosion.
The cause of the fire was under investigation. Jackson didn’t know where on the 840-foot amphibious assault vessel the explosion and the fire occurred.
Images of the fire initially showed a huge plume of smoke visible around San Diego. The city is the home port of the Bonhomme Richard, which was undergoing routine maintenance at the time of the fire.
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday released a statement Sunday night, saying: “Today, we suffered a terrible tragedy aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) when a fire broke out aboard the ship while in port San Diego. At this point, 17 Sailors and four civilians are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. The remainder of the crew is accounted for. We are grateful for the quick and immediate response of local, base and shipboard firefighters aboard USS Bonhomme Richard. Our thoughts and prayers are with our BHR Sailors, their families and our emergency responders who continue to fight the fire. Godspeed.”

North Korea blew up its joint liaison office with South Korea on Tuesday, in a dramatic and carefully planned display of rancor toward its southern neighbor. The act follows threats from Pyongyang, and signals what experts believe will be more provocations to come.
South Korea’s Unification Ministry, which handles inter-Korean ties, confirmed that the liaison office was destroyed by a blast shortly before 3:00 p.m. local time. The office was established in 2018 in the Kaesong Industrial Zone, just north of the Demilitarized Zone.
The liaison office appears to have been empty when it was blown up. Representatives of the South and North pulled out of the office in January, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Jointly operated factories in the zone had already shut down amid tensions in 2016.
Pyongyang cut all communication channels with the South last week and telegraphed Tuesday’s move over the weekend. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo Jong, an increasingly prominent figure, threatened the “complete collapse” of the office, which she described as “useless.” She also warned of military action to vent “our people’s resentment” at Seoul allowing North Korean defectors to send propaganda leaflets into the North via balloons.
On Tuesday, North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency said the office was destroyed in a “terrific explosion” because the North’s “enraged people” were determined to “force [the] human scum, and those who have sheltered the scum, to pay dearly for their crimes,” referring to those sending leaflets.
Seoul has often allowed the anti-North leaflets as a form of free speech in a democratic state. But the administration of President Moon Jae-in, which has pursued a policy of engagement with Pyongyang, moved to block the leafleteers by filing a criminal complaint last week and canceling the defector groups’ business licenses.
Seoul was not, however, indifferent to the demolition of the liaison office.
“The government makes clear that all responsibility caused by this rests totally with the North Korean side,” the National Security Council said in a statement.
“We sternly warn that if North Korea takes steps further aggravating the situation, we will respond strongly.”
Following the collapse of nuclear negotiations at an aborted summit with President Trump in Vietnam last year, Kim repeatedly signaled that his patience with diplomacy was at an end. He declared in a New Year’s speech that Pyongyang was no longer bound by a moratorium on testing nuclear weapons or strategic weapons.
This year has seen a string of North Korean snubs, slights and provocations aimed at Seoul and Washington, including more than a dozen rocket and missile launches. North Korea’s Foreign Minister Ri Son Gwon last week dismissed the personal relationship between Trump and Kim as useless. And Kwon Jong Gun, director-general for U.S. affairs at North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, suggested that unless the U.S. steered clear of inter-Korean issues, the North could make trouble for U.S. presidential elections in November.
Some analysts, though, see in Pyongyang’s moves elements from a well-worn playbook.
“In North Korea’s way of stirring a crisis with threats of military provocations, this year isn’t special,” comments Lee Ho-ryung, a researcher at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, a think tank under the Ministry of National Defense in Seoul.
In 2015, for example, “North Korea also took issue with leaflets and how they target its highest dignity,” she says. “The pattern is quite similar this year.”
The crisis whipped up by the North, she explains, helps distract from a lack of economic progress at home — especially this year, as the North’s economy shrivels under the weight of sanctions and closure of the border with China, its main trading partner, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Lee predicts that the North will continue its provocations by undoing 2018 agreements with Seoul aimed at reducing military tensions, something Pyongyang hinted at on Tuesday.
“They could reinstall guard posts or send more troops to the DMZ region,” Lee says.
But she doubts that Pyongyang will go as far as resuming nuclear testing, as, she says, “North Korea would want to pursue something that won’t exhibit too much hostility toward the U.S. or the international community.”

]]>A fire and explosion at a hash oil manufacturer in the Toy District of downtown Los Angeles on Saturday evening left at least 11 firefighters injured, according to the city’s Fire Department.
The firefighters had gone inside a building and climbed onto the roof, trying to knock down the blaze — but had to run for their lives when a ball of flames shot out and scorched a fire truck parked across the street.
All 11 responders suffered burn injuries and were taken to a hospital, three of them in critical condition, according to Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott. All of the firefighters are expected to survive, he added.
Some of the fleeing firefighters were on fire and tore off their protective equipment and left it on the sidewalk, along with melted helmets, Scott said.

“There was a significant explosion that caused a mayday report. This was upgraded to a major emergency category,” Scott told reporters in a Saturday evening news conference. “The good news is everybody’s going to make it.”

Firefighters got to the scene, just east of the city’s Financial District, within minutes of the call, around 6:26 p.m. in the 300 block of E. Boyd St. and had the fire extinguished just over two hours later, Scott said.
After the explosion, firefighters at the scene immediately called for additional help.
In all, more than 230 firefighters responded, FOX 11 of Los Angeles reported.

Many of those who remained at the scene — unaware of the seriousness of their colleagues’ injuries — were traumatized by what had transpired, Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas said.
“You can imagine the amount of emotional stress,” he said.

At one point, numerous stretchers were seen lined up in the street outside the building and helicopter crews were seen atop a nearby building, apparently planning to transport the injured to hospitals.

The blaze spread to some surrounding buildings, KTLA-TV of Los Angeles reported.
Both Los Angees Mayor Eric Garcetti and California Gov. Gavin Newsom posted messages of support for the firefighters on Twitter.
“My thoughts are with our brave @LAFD firefighters,” Garcetti wrote. “Closely tracking this situation as we continue to get more information.”
“Grateful for the brave firefighters and first responders on the scene battling these flames tonight,” Newsom wrote.

]]>A massive fire broke out in downtown Los Angeles Saturday evening, touching off an explosion and leaving nearly a dozen firefighters injured.
“There was a significant explosion that caused a mayday report,” Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott said in a briefing carried live on Twitter. “This was upgraded to a major emergency category.”
Several firefighters suffered injuries while trying to bring the raging flames under control.
“Tragically, we have 11 firefighters with burn injuries,” Scott said. Their exact conditions were not known.
The fire was initially reported at 327 East Boyd St. just before 6:30 p.m. It started in a single-story commercial building, and quickly spread to other nearby structures.
In a statement shared on Twitter earlier in the evening, the LAFD reported “over 230 firefighters are responding. Firefighters have moved to a defensive posture for fire attack, and a medical branch has been created for treating and transporting injured firefighters.”
Video posted on the NBC4 News Los Angeles website and Twitter feed showed multiple ambulances and fire trucks on the scene.
Flames and thick black smoke could be seen in the footage as fire crews struggled to bring the blaze under control. Streets in the area were blocked off to traffic, and residents were urged to avoid the area.
The fire was knocked out at 8:08 p.m. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation and “is of paramount concern,” Scott said.

]]>An explosion in downtown Los Angeles has injured 10 firefighters, with dozens more working to douse the blaze.
The LA fire department issued a “mayday” call on Saturday evening and characterised the blaze as a “major emergency” with more than 230 firefighters responding.
“A medical branch has been created for treating and transporting injured firefighters,” the LAFD said.
The condition of the injured was not immediately known. News helicopters showed dozens of fire trucks at the scene.
As firefighters aimed hoses at the long-slung building where the explosion occurred, others could be seen standing next to gurneys that had been readied for the injured.
Firefighters were initially called to a fire at a single-storey building around 6.30pm. Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange said the firefighters entered the building, and there was nothing unusual until the explosion occurred.
By about 7:15 p.m. the fire appeared largely under control. It was not immediately known what type of business was in the building or what caused the explosion.
