]]>A sheriff’s deputy in Georgia was fired Sunday after videos posted to social media showed him repeatedly striking a Black man who was pinned to the ground.
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy, who is white, was fired for excessive use of force in the encounter Friday with Roderick Walker, 26. A criminal investigation was being turned over to the Clayton County district attorney’s office, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
An attorney for Walker, Shean Williams, said Saturday that Walker was a passenger in a car that was pulled over for having a broken taillight. When a deputy asked for his identification, he refused — “like every American citizen has the right to do,” Williams said.
“Why are you asking for my ID?” Williams quoted Walker saying. “I’m not driving, and I haven’t done anything wrong.”
After authorities told Walker to get out of the car, Williams said, the deputies “attacked” him.
At least two videos show the confrontation from different angles. In one, an officer is heard saying Walker is biting his hand.

In the same video, deputies pin Walker down and appear to have him in a hold around his neck. Walker can be heard saying “I can’t breathe” while appearing to gasp for air. A woman can be heard screaming: “No! Don’t kill him! He said he can’t breathe!”
The deputies are still on top of the man for several seconds after the woman’s plea. When the deputies get off him, he is bleeding from his nose and appears to have lost consciousness. Williams said Walker went unconscious twice.
At least one child can he heard screaming in the background.
The deputies are then seen rolling Walker onto his stomach and handcuffing him. The video ends with a third deputy asking the woman to get into a car.
Another video shot from afar shows a boy inside a car parked next to the scene, yelling, “Daddy! Daddy!” The same video shows a deputy punching the man while he is pinned down.
There does not appear to be any video indicating what led up to the incident, and it was unclear how the interaction became violent. Authorities have not said why the car was pulled over.
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office said in the statement that Walker received medical treatment, including X-rays, and that no fractures were found. A photo released by his attorneys showed him with a swollen eye.
Jail records show that Walker was arrested on suspicion of obstructing or hindering an officer and battery, which Williams said should be dropped. The sheriff’s office said Sunday that Walker would have been released on his own recognizance but that he was being held on an outstanding felony probation warrant for cruelty to children and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as well as another warrant for failure to appear.

Williams, the sheriff’s office and the Southern States Police Benevolent Association did not respond to requests for comment Sunday.
The arrest comes after months of protests over the police killing of Breonna Taylor, the death of George Floyd in police custody and the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Referring to those cases, Gerald Griggs of the NAACP in Atlanta said Saturday that he and others are demanding that Walker be released but that they could be mourning his life.
“We’ve seen this happen on too many occasions, and we’re just tired of it,” he said.

]]>Newly released video footage shows a California sheriff’s deputy was “undeniably the initial aggressor” in a confrontation last year with an NBA team president, lawyers for the team official said Tuesday.
The incident took place June 13, 2019, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., just after the Toronto Raptors defeated the Golden State Warriors 114-100.
The video, running more than six minutes and including three edited clips, shows Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy Alan Strickland stopping Raptors president Masai Ujiri as Ujiri attempts to walk onto the basketball court to congratulate his team after the end of the game.
Strickland was attempting to check whether Ujiri had proper credentials authorizing him to step onto the court, FOX 2 of the San Francisco Bay Area reported.
Just moments earlier, Ujiri is seen showing his credentials to a security staffer and then tucking the credentials inside his jacket – giving the impression he believes he has received proper clearance.
Soon he reaches Strickland and the men exchange words, with Strickland appearing to try to block Ujiri from advancing to the court. Strickland is then seen shoving Ujiri and then shoving him a second time – prompting Ujiri to shove back.
“Back the f— up,” Strickland shouted to Ujiri, his lawyers claim, according to FOX 2.
“Why did you push me?” Ujiri shouts back. “I’m president of the Raptors.”
The altercation might have ended that day – but in February the sheriff’s deputy filed a federal lawsuit against Ujiri, the Raptors and the company that owns the team, claiming Ujiri shoved him and caused injuries to his head, jaw, chin and teeth – and fears permanent disability, FOX 2 reported.
Strickland also filed a worker’s compensation claim, alleging Ujiri “circumvented” a security checkpoint, tried to “storm” the court and struck the deputy with both fists.
In February, however, video shot by FOX 2 showed Strickland carrying boxes and using a power saw outside his home, the station reported.

In March, the station reported that the deputy had been convicted of insurance fraud in a 1994 case.
In their 108-page response to Strickland’s lawsuit, Ujiri’s lawyers claim the newly released video vindicates their client and shows the sheriff’s deputy initiated the physical confrontation.
“Mr. Strickland used unnecessary and excessive force,” Ujiri’s lawyers claim. “There was no reason to view Mr. Ujiri as a threat to anyone and no reason for Mr. Strickland to curse at Mr. Ujiri and forcefully shove him as numerous witnesses observed.”

Neither Strickland nor his attorney, David Mastagni, responded to a FOX 2 request for comment. Strickland has not been back to work in more than a year following the incident, FOX 2 reported.
Alameda County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly also had no comment, the station reported.
Strickland was paid $224,000 in 2018, not including benefits, the station reported.

A gunman shot a California sheriff’s deputy in the head during an ambush at a San Luis Obispo County police station — then fled the scene and allegedly killed a homeless man.
The gunman, identified as Mason James Lira, started his rampage when he opened fire on the Paso Robles Police Department at about 3:45 a.m. and shot one responding police officer in the face, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.
Windows and a door were shot out at the building. No one inside had been hurt.
“We feel that this was an ambush, that he planned it, that he intended for officers to come out of the police department and to assault them,” San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson said at a press conference.
Lira, 26, fled the scene as the injured officer was being attended to. The wounded deputy was in serious but stable condition with a bullet lodged in his head, the chief said.
Police later found a homeless man shot to death at the Paso Robles train station. The 58-year-old, unidentified transient was shot once at close range in the back of the head, police said.
Cops were on the lookout for Lira last night as they released pictures of the suspect and warned that he may be armed.

]]>A California sheriff’s deputy was shot in the head early Wednesday in what investigators described as an “ambush” attack on the police station.
The shooter, who remained at large, opened fire around 3:45 a.m. on a police station in Paso Robles. The deputy was struck while responding to the shooting and his partner dragged him to safety and returned fire, San Luis Obispo County Ian Parkinson said.
The bullet remained lodged in the deputy’s head and he’s in serious condition, Parkinson said.

“We feel that this was an ambush, that he planned it, that he intended for officers to come out of the police department and to assault them,” he said.
Investigators said another man was found shot to death near railroad tracks a few blocks from the police station and the homicide was related to the other shooting.
An hours-long search of downtown Paso Robles ended without an arrest.
The shooter, a man in his 20s or 30s, fired at the Paso Robles Police Department while officers were inside, Cipolla said, and the gunfire occurred over a span of some minutes.
The Paso Robles Police Department tweeted that the shooting stopped by 4 a.m. The department later released a photo of the shooting suspect.
Paso Robles is a small city along California’s central coast, about 175 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

The shooting came in the wake of nationwide protests against police brutality sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody late last month.
Arizona Rep. Paul Goas blamed Wednesday morning’s shooting on some of the more incendiary rhetoric stemming from the protests.
“What did you expect to happen after violent leftist rioters carried signs claiming ‘the only good cop is a dead cop’???” Gosar tweeted when sharing an Associated Press article about the Paso Robles shooting.

The shooting also follows other attacks on law enforcement in recent weeks. On Saturday, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, 38, was killed and another deputy was in an attack allegedly carried out by an Air Force sergeant armed with homemade bombs, an AR-15 and other weapons.
Santa Cruz County Sheriff Jim Hart said the suspect, Staff Sgt. Steven Carrillo, was intent on killing officers.

]]>The former lead prosecutor on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team, Andrew Weissmann, is leading a virtual fundraiser next week for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign.
According to the Biden campaign, Weissmann will be headlining a “virtual fireside chat” moderated by Anne Milgram — the former New Jersey attorney general — on June 2 at 8np.m.
The chat will take place on Zoom, and “guests who RSVP by making a contribution…will be sent instructions for how to join via Zoom,” according to the invitation from the Biden “Victory Fund.”
Weissmann, after leaving Mueller’s team, returned to New York University School of Law last May as a distinguished senior fellow with the Center on the Administration of Criminal Law (CACL), where he previously worked.

Weissmann, a longtime and well-known federal prosecutor, also had signed a deal with Random House to write a book. It is unclear, at this point, how much his book would focus on his experience during the Russia investigation.
Throughout the Russia investigation, Weissmann had been considered a “deputy” to Mueller, with conservatives regularly targeting him for his reputation of using aggressive tactics in cases, as well as his role in past controversial prosecutions. Weissmann helped to build the case against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
On Thursday, some Republicans hit back over the news of Weissmann’s involvement with the Biden campaign: “As if we didn’t already know, Andrew Weissmann’s politics are officially unmasked,” quipped former Trump White House press secretary Sean Spicer.
