]]>The Washington Redskins will undergo a “thorough review” of their name following renewed pressure from activists and corporations, the team announced Friday — a significant decision that potentially paves the way for the franchise to make a change.
A day earlier, FedEx, which owns the naming rights to the team’s stadium in Landover, Maryland, said it had asked the Redskins to change their name, which many view as a racist slur. Nike, another team sponsor, also removed all references to the Redskins on its website.
In a statement, the Redskins said they have been engaging in initial talks with the league over the past few weeks over the name. The team said it was conducting the review “in light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community.”
“This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field,” team owner Dan Snyder said in a statement.
The review represents a huge shift for Snyder, who famously vowed in 2013 that he would “never” change the name. Snyder, who purchased the team in 1999, has been adamant the name honors American Indians and is a “great tradition.”
But the team has faced intense scrutiny within the last month in the wake of George Floyd’s death and the nationwide reckoning over racism. As organizations like NASCAR banned the Confederate flag and local officials removed Confederate statues across the country, activists, politicians and corporations urged Snyder and the team to take action.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who had previously defended the Redskins‘ name, said in a statement that the league was “supportive in this important step.”
Last month, the Redskins had taken steps to dissociate from founding owner George Preston Marshall, a segregationist who didn’t integrate his team until the early 1960s — the last to do so in the NFL. Washington removed Marshall’s name from all team materials and renamed a section of FedEx Field after former running back Bobby Mitchell, the team’s first black player, instead.
Despite the removal, supporters of changing the name argued Washington needed to go a step further and rebrand. District Mayor Muriel Bowser called the team name “an obstacle” toward building a new stadium for the Redskins in the city. A group of 87 investment firms sent letters to Nike, FedEx and PepsiCo — three major sponsors for the Redskins — urging them to sever ties with Washington unless the team changes its name.
FedEx’s request, in particular, was seen as monumental as CEO Frederick Smith is part of the Redskins‘ ownership group. The shipping company became the team’s sponsor in 1999 with a 27-year, $200 million deal.
Earlier in the week, Redskins coach Ron Rivera told a Chicago radio station that conversation related to the name was a “discussion for another time,” side-stepping whether he thought the team should change its name.
But in Friday’s release, Rivera said the issue was of “personal importance to me.”
“I look forward to working closely with Dan Snyder to make sure we continue the mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and our Military,” Rivera said.
The Redskins said they believe “believe this review can and will be conducted with the best interest of all in mind.”

Team owner Daniel Snyder also commented on the issue.
“This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field.”
Redskins coach Ron Rivera said the issue was in “personal importance.”

The franchise came under scrutiny this week as it was revealed the team is reportedly barred from seeking a move from FedEx Field in Maryland to RFK Stadium in Washington unless the team changes its name.

A day later, FedEx formally requested the Redskins to change their name. FedEx is a corporate sponsor of the Redskins and the NFL. Nike would later remove Redskins gear from its online store and Pepsi would follow suit and ask the team to change its name as well.

Brookline will conduct COVID-19 antibody testing next week on 400 randomly selected residents and 200 of the town’s first responders and essential workers, officials announced Wednesday.
The initiative, through a partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital and Fallon Ambulance, will work to determine how prevalent COVID-19 antibodies are among the group and can then help health professionals determine how many people have contracted the coronavirus without showing symptoms, town leaders said in a press release.
The residents, who have the option not to participate, have already been randomly selected through census data and will be mailed a notice of their selection, according to officials.
Those who are not contacted by the Department of Public Health will not be tested due to the limited availability of tests. Testing is intended only for residents who have not displayed symptoms of COVID-19.
“Having a sample size level understanding of the prevalence of COVID-19 antibodies among residents and first responders is a critical step in building our understanding of the true size and scale of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Dr. Swannie Jett, Brookline’s director of public health, said in a statement. “I’m grateful for our partners at Massachusetts General Hospital for facilitating this work, and am hopeful it will shed further light on the true extent of impact this virus has had on our community.”
Trained professionals will use a finger stick test, which “collects a small amount of blood that will subsequently be analyzed by MGH staff on-site,” officials said. Residents will be notified of their test results.
First responders and essential workers employed by the town will be tested on Monday, and the selected residents will be tested on Friday, May 15, at Larz Anderson Park in a drive-through format, officials said.

The University of Washington School of Medicine is looking for people who have tested positive for COVID-19 to participate in a clinical trial aimed at finding out whether a controversial drug called hydroxychloroquine can keep them from having to be hospitalized.
Word of UW Medicine’s clinical trial comes after reports about a study at Veterans Health Administration medical centers in which COVID-19 patients who took hydroxychloroquine, which is typically used to treat malaria and autoimmune disease, died at higher rates than those who didn’t take the drug.
Today, the Food and Drug Administration warned that hydroxychloroquine carries “known risks” of potentially deadly heart complications — and said the drug should be used in supervised settings such as clinical trials, where the risks can be better studied and mitigated.
The Department of Veterans Affairs’ study involved patients who were being hospitalized for COVID-19. UW Medicine’s study, in contrast, will focus on patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 but aren’t sick enough to be in a hospital. The new study will be randomized, unlike the VA study, which should lead to more reliable results.
“We are recruiting patients with recently diagnosed COVID infection and hope to show whether early treatment can keep them from having to be admitted to the hospital,” co-principal investigator Christine Johnston, an associate professor of medicine at UW, said today in a news release. “We are studying whether the early treatment of COVID-19 prevents viral pneumonia and also seeing if the medications decrease viral shedding, which could have a potential benefit of reduced transmission of COVID-19.”
The trial will gauge the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine as well as a combination of the drug with azithromycin, an antibiotic.
Two cohorts of outpatients will be enrolled in the trial, in high-risk and low-risk categories. Patients who are older than 60 or have underlying conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity or lung problems are considered high-risk. Patients who are aged 18 through 59 without such conditions are considered low-risk.

More than 600 patients in all will be enrolled at sites across the country, including UW as well as medical facilities in Boston, New Orleans, Chicago and Syracuse, N.Y.
The study will measure nasal viral shedding by asking study participants to collect daily nasal swabs for 14 days. Participants will also have their heart rhythm monitored to warn of any cardiac toxicity.
The viral shedding pattern will be compared between the different treatments. If a treatment leads to faster clearance of viral shedding, it could theoretically decrease the risk of passing the virus on to others.
If another medicine comes along that looks promising, the trial can test that as well, Johnston said.
The $5.8 million trial is funded by the COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator, an initiative launched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Wellcome and Mastercard, with support from an array of public and philanthropic donors.
Results from the trial are expected by July.
“This rigorous trial will quickly provide the answer whether hydroxychloroquine with or without azithromycin is effective and safe, or whether we should move on to other potential therapies,” said co-principal investigator Jared Baeten, a professor of global health at UW.
The study is teaming with another hydroxychloroquine trial being led by UW Medicine in collaboration with New York University to determine whether the drug can prevent transmission in people exposed to the virus. That trial is also receiving funding from the COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator.
