Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn said it was “concerning” that a new survey found more than a quarter of adults would “definitely” or “probably” not accept a free coronavirus vaccine.
During a discussion about the possible timetable for developing a vaccine, Hahn was asked what happens if all of those people refuse.
“It is a sizable number. And it is concerning. And, of course, the issue of vaccines in this country has been around for a number of years,” he said on ABC News’ “This Week.”
“What I can say is, one of the major reasons we issued this guidance was we wanted to give clarity about what we were going to look at, what we need to look at, and that FDA — the nation’s FDA — has incredible scientific expertise and we will do our job to assess the safety and the efficacy of a vaccine candidate,” he continued.
“I want to assure the American people of that and provide confidence that we’re on the job.”
The ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 27 percent were wary of getting a vaccine. Of those, half said they don’t trust vaccines and 23 percent said they didn’t think it was necessary.
But 71 percent of respondents said they “definitely” or “probably” would get a COVID-19 vaccine.
Hahn said a vaccine was being developed with “unprecedented” speed — but stopped short of President Trump’s prediction on Saturday that one could be ready before the end of the year.
“I can’t predict when a vaccine will be available. And I just want to tell you about FDA’s role in this. Yes, we are seeing unprecedented speed for the development of a vaccine,” Hahn said.
“But as you know … we issued guidance this past week about vaccine development because we want to be very clear, our solemn promise to the American people is that we will make a decision based upon the data and science on a vaccine with respect to the safety and effectiveness of that vaccine.”

]]>SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Medical Director of Infection Prevention & Control for Cottage Health delivered an urgent message to the Santa Barbara County community ahead of Fourth of July weekend, as local coronavirus cases rise.
Dr. David Fisk, who is an infectious disease physician for Cottage Health and Sansum Clinic, says the county is seeing a “very dramatic increase” in COVID-19 circulating in the community.
“As a physician and en epidemiologist who deals with infections, transmissible, communicable disease, I’m extremely concerned,” Dr. Fisk said Thursday. “This is a time where the health of our community is at risk.
“There is much more risk of acquiring this virus, as of today, than there has been at any point since the onset of this epidemic in Santa Barbara. And we anticipate that risk to increase in the coming weeks… So we strongly encourage people to take social distancing very, very seriously at this time.”
Dr. Fisk says hospital bed capacity at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is “very good” at this time, and that the hospital is not currently seeing supply shortages as it did this spring. Dr. Fisk also says, however, that the current spike in cases and the contagious nature of the virus make it “conceivable” that local hospitals could be overrun with COVID-19 patients at some point.
Dr. Fisk says physical distancing is absolutely crucial, as is mask-wearing and frequent hand-washing. He urges the community to be “very proactive.”
“The medical evidence for the effectiveness of mask-wearing and reduction of COVID transmission has increased, so now there’s no question whatsoever that masks can protect people from COVID but also protect the loved ones around them and people they come in contact with,” he said. “Because one of the main functions of our wearing masks is to reduce our shedding of virus and transmission of it from us to another person.
“So if we wear a mask, it protects those of us in our community who have increased health risk, weakened immune systems, but also provides us some level of protection.”
Dr. Fisk says areas like beaches can promote social activity and gathering, but that the real risk this weekend is gatherings of people anywhere.
“To me, it’s not so much what’s open and what’s closed, as what actions individuals take,” Dr. Fisk said. “And the main message people need to take is: do not get together in groups. And do not get together with people who do not live in your household if you cannot stay more than six feet away from them.”
Dr. Fisk says if Fourth of July weekend leads to an increase in coronavirus cases, those numbers would begin to show up late next week and hospitalizations would increase the week after that.

]]>Lee Health held a ‘100 Days of Coronavirus’ conference call Wednesday to discuss how our community is handling the spread of the coronavirus.
The first case of coronavirus in Lee County was reported on March 6, 2020. Since then, Lee County has racked up 3,187 cases of the virus. Wednesday, 141 COVID-19 patients were being treated in Lee Health hospitals, compared to 106 COVID-19 patients three weeks ago.
Dr. Antonucci believes our community is suffering from ‘coronavirus fatigue.’
“Being out in the community, I am concerned that this fatigue is leading to more and more people not wearing masks and practicing social distancing. I see it when I go out to our shops, our stores, and our grocery stores.”
He is urging everyone to wear a mask and keep a safe, physical distance from other people every time people leave their homes, citing CDC research that cloth masks prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Dr. Antonucci is urging the public to assume coronavirus can be spread through asymptomatic carriers, people with no symptoms, so masks can keep others from spreading the virus.

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada is concerned about China’s proposal to impose national security laws on Hong Kong and called for real dialogue in order to de-escalate tensions, the prime minister said on Friday.
“We are concerned with the situation in Hong Kong. We have 300,000 Canadians who live in Hong Kong and that’s one of the reasons why we want to ensure that the one country, two systems approach continues for Hong Kong,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in his daily news conference.
“We have long called for a de-escalation of tensions and genuine dialogue between Hong Kong citizens and Beijing, and we continue to call for that, and we will keep monitoring the situation closely.”
