USA Today updated a story tying the Trump campaign to a Nazi symbol of an eagle when critics condemned the paper, pointing out that eagles are prominent in America emblems, too.
Last weekend, the paper published a “fact-check” claiming “Trump’s campaign website recently unveiled a T-shirt that has come under fire because of design similarities between its logo and a Nazi symbol” and coming to the conclusion that the claims are “true.”
After widespread backlash, the paper declared on Wednesday that the claim wasn’t true after all.
“Update: The rating on this article has been changed to inconclusive. It was updated to reflect further reporting and analysis,” the verified Twitter account for USA Today wrote.
The USA Today website added an editor’s note, informing readers that the original fact check is now inconclusive.
“The claims that a Trump campaign T-shirt has come under criticism for using a symbol similar to a Nazi eagle is TRUE, based on our research,” USA Today’s Will Peebles initially wrote.
USA Today corrected a “fact check” that first claimed it was true that “Trump’s campaign website unveiled a T-shirt that has come under fire because of design similarities between its logo and a Nazi symbol.”
Many critics pointed out that eagles are also used prominently by American groups such as the United States Marine Corps, which forced the USA Today to first clarify that “the eagle is a longtime US symbol, too,” but the clarification didn’t stop critics from mocking the paper and the story has now been updated.
“The U.S. government has many uses of eagle imagery in its official seals and emblems including on the ‘Great Seal of America,’ on the presidential seal and on the mace of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Trump campaign’s T-shirt includes the use of an eagle that some claim bears resemblance to a Nazi eagle. We rate the claim that the Trump campaign is using Nazi imagery as INCONCLUSIVE, based on our research,” Peebles wrote in the updated version.

Ultimate Fighting Championship star Jorge Masvidal offered up support to the Goya Foods company after it was targeted with a boycott following the CEO’s positive words about President Trump.
“Actions of @GoyaFoods speak louder than the #woke mob,” Masvidal tweeted Saturday along with a news article about the company donating millions of pounds of food to Puerto Rican victims of Hurricane Maria. “My people don’t get influenced by those that don’t know. Masvidal, who is of Cuban and Peruvian descent, posted his tweet as Goya Foods, the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the United States, faces a boycott pushed by several prominent Democrats after CEO Robert Unanue complimented the president during a White House event.
“We are all truly blessed … to have a leader like President Trump, who is a builder,” Unanue said during a speech in the Rose Garden as part of the White House’s Hispanic Prosperity Initiative. “We have an incredible builder, and we pray. We pray for our leadership, our president.”
Twitter users then spread the hashtag #Goyaway, aimed at motivating people to refrain from buying the products.
Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, and actor John Leguizamo, former Bill Clinton adviser Robert Reich, and other high-profile figures with large social media followings joined in on the effort.
Unanue refused to back down, saying he would not apologize. He argued that the boycott was a “suppression of speech.”
“He’s going through a lot getting impeached but no matter your views on him, that’s one bad motherf—–,” Masvidal was quoted as saying. “He’s done a lot of crazy shit that a lot of people wish they could do.”
Masvidal is scheduled to fight Kamaru Usman Saturday night as the main event for UFC 251, which is taking place in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

Kemp, a Republican, declared a state of emergency Monday following an uptick in shootings over the July Fourth weekend that injured 31 people and killed five, including an 8-year-old girl, after weeks of violent crime and property destruction in Atlanta.
“Peaceful protests were hijacked by criminals with a dangerous, destructive agenda. Now, innocent Georgians are being targeted, shot and left for dead,” Kemp said in a statement. “This lawlessness must be stopped and order restored in our capital city.”
Among those killed over the holiday weekend was Secoriea Turner, 8, who was riding in a car Saturday night in Atlanta when at least two people opened fire on the vehicle. The shooting happened near the Wendy’s fast-food restaurant where Rayshard Brooks was killed by a police officer last month, prompting weeks of protests and clashes between demonstrators and police.
“Why does it take a death?” Collins asked on Tuesday.
“It just is sad because these minority communities, the communities that are hardest hit right now, are the ones that blow the brunt of this,” he added. “Why are we doing this? We need to stop it now, that’s why the governor, I think, brought in the National Guard.”
Collins went on to say that “this is the thing that has to happen because it shouldn’t take a tragic death for somebody to all of a sudden say, ‘Wow we need to enforce the law.’”
Collins noted that “anywhere where you allow lawlessness to exist,” when “the police are told to disengage” and when “the mayor’s office seemingly was just letting it [violence] happen,” lawlessness won’t “be contained,” which he said is “going to cause more and more problems.”
He added that “unfortunately” that’s what “we saw it in Seattle, now we’ve seen in Atlanta.” Collins had referenced the infamous Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP) zone in Seattle, which was forcefully cleared out last week after the city’s leadership finally acted following two deadly shootings and weeks of scrutiny.
Collins, whose father was a police officer, told “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday that the people who call for defunding police departments are saying that officers “don’t matter.”
“The law enforcement teams are there to protect not only lives and property, they’re there to encourage our communities, to have the civil discourse, to have the community bonding that we know that we can go out and be safe.”
“We know we can go anywhere in our cities and know that the rule of law is being enforced,” he continued. “And when you talk about defunding the police or cutting back on the police, simply what you’re telling those police officers, who put their lives on the line for us every day, is ‘we don’t value you.’”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) echoed her remarks.
“This judicial rewriting of our laws short-circuited the legislative process and the authority of the electorate,” he said. “Six un-elected and unaccountable judges instead took it upon themselves to act as legislators, and that undermines our democratic process.”
And the president of the evangelical activist group Family Research Council,Tony Perkins, said the court’s effort “to rewrite the Civil Rights Act to add gender identity and sexual orientation as protected classes poses a grave threat to religious liberty.” Sean Davis, a writer for the Federalist, said conservatives need to “start picking individuals who will vote correctly.”
But that’s not how most Senate Republicans see it. They not only defended Gorsuch but also said justices shouldn’t be expected to automatically rule one way or the other.
While most Democrats dismissed Gorsuch’s claims of judicial independence during his 2017 confirmation, Republicans said his leadership on the LGBTQ issue confirms that Gorsuch is his own judge.
“It demonstrated Gorsuch’s independence,” Senate Majority Whip John Thune said. “The country’s obviously changed a lot on that issue. And I assume that he looked at the facts and the law and that’s the conclusion he came to. And that’s what, when we nominated him and confirmed him, we wanted him to.”
Even those that disagreed with the court’s decision took far more issue with the process than the substance. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said no one should lose their job on the basis of sexual orientation but that he wished the “decision would have been reached by Congress rather than the court.”
“The court is legislating what they think is good policy. And that, to me though, that’s really not their role. I mean I don’t particularly care about their views on policy,” said Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), a former Supreme Court clerk. “The right answer is ‘over to Congress’ to do something about it.”
Still, the Supreme Court thrusting difficult issues on Congress isn’t always successful either. In 2013, the Supreme Court struck down key parts of the Voting Rights Act, asking Congress to write a new law if lawmakers believed voting rights were still an issue. Congress has not addressed it.
Just like the court’s same-sex marriage decision in 2015, the decision on gay and transgender rights could be the last word on an issue that the federal legislature has avoided. And the finality of the Supreme Court’s view relieved the handful of longtime GOP proponents of ending discrimination of LGBTQ people via legislation.
“It may change some of the dynamics around here,” Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) said. “Now there’s a Supreme Court case [with] the Civil Rights Act applying to some of the discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. So it’s a big deal.”

New York City Council leaders have issued a joint statement declaring their intent to back proposals slashing $1 billion from the NYPD budget.
Speaker Corey Johnson, Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo, Finance Committee Chair Daniel Dromm and Public Safety Committee Chair Donovan Richards, among others, said they support a plan to “get to $1 billion in cuts to New York City’s police spending in the Fiscal 2021 budget.”
The NYPD has a proposed budget of $6 billion, which Mayor Bill de Blasio has pledged to cut in response to citywide protests after initially backing the department.
The loss of $1 billion in funding would limit the scope and function of the police, but the City Council believes it shows a clear commitment towards reform.
“There is no doubt that this is an ambitious goal, but it is one that the time we are in calls for – both here in New York City and nationwide,” read the statement, posted on the council’s website.
“This is possible,” the statement said, noting anticipated savings by “reducing uniform headcount through attrition, cutting overtime, shifting responsibilities away from the NYPD, finding efficiencies” and more.
The proposed NYPD cuts will likely be applauded by protesters, though it falls well short of the “abolish” the police demand by some activists as stated in an op-ed in The New York Times on Friday.
The Police Benevolent Association expressed disappointment with the council’s announcement and said it will bear the “blame” for the fallout from cuts in police services.
“For decades, every time a city agency failed at its task, the city’s answer was to take the job away and give it to the NYPD,” the PBA said in a tweet. “If the City Council wants to give responsibilities back to those failing agencies, that’s their choice.”
“But they will bear the blame for every new victim, for every New Yorker in need of help who falls through the cracks. They won’t be able to throw cops under the bus anymore.”

Controversial trials in which volunteers are intentionally infected with Covid-19 could accelerate vaccine development, according to the World Health Organization, which has released new guidance on how the approach could be ethically justified despite the potential dangers for participants.
So-called challenge trials are a mainstream approach in vaccine development and have been used in malaria, typhoid and flu, but there are treatments available for these diseases if a volunteer becomes severely ill. For Covid-19, a safe dose of the virus has not been established and there are no failsafe treatments if things go wrong.
Scientists, however, increasingly agree that such trials should be considered, and the WHO is the latest body to indicate conditional support for the idea.
“There’s this emerging consensus among everyone who has thought about this seriously,” said Prof Nir Eyal, the director of Rutgers University’s Center for Population-Level Bioethics in the US.
The prospect of infecting healthy individuals with a potentially deadly pathogen may sound counterintuitive, but according to Eyal the risk of death from Covid-19 for someone in their 20s is around one in 3,000 – similar to the risk for live kidney donation. In this case, the potential benefits would extend not to a single individual, but to thousands or millions who could be protected by a vaccine.
“Once you give it thought, it is surprisingly easier to approve than dispatching volunteers as part-time medical workers and other practices that we’ve already accepted,” he said.
In new guidance issued this week, the WHO said that well-designed challenge studies could accelerate Covid-19 vaccine development and also make it more likely that the vaccines ultimately deployed will be effective. The WHO lists eight criteria that would need to be met for the approach to be ethically justified, including restricting participation to healthy people aged 18-30 and fully informed consent. Strikingly, the guidelines do not rule out challenge trials in the absence of an effective treatment, instead stating that the risk could fall “within acceptable upper limits” for such research.
“The big news is that WHO doesn’t say challenge trials are forbidden. It specifies reasonable steps on how they can be deployed,” said Eyal.
Vaccines are typically tested using a large group of people whose infection rates are compared with a separate group of unvaccinated controls. Waiting for enough people to be exposed to an illness, however, can take months and require thousands of participants. In a fast-moving pandemic situation, there is a risk of trials grinding to a standstill as infection rates fall in some regions. Challenge trials sidestep this problem, allowing efficacy to be established within weeks using just 100 or so volunteers.
A safe dose for Covid-19 would need to be established – enough to cause illness, but not severe illness, which could be a very fine line – through initial dose escalation studies. Such studies would need to be conducted in secure facilities to avoid unintentionally infecting anyone outside the trial and would pose uncertain levels of risk to participants.
Prof Andrew Pollard, who is leading the trial of the vaccine developed by the team at the University of Oxford’s Jenner Institute, said there is “huge interest” in the possibility of challenge trials among those working on vaccines against coronavirus.
“At the moment, because we don’t have a rescue therapy we have to approach challenge studies extremely cautiously,” said Pollard. “But I don’t think it should be ruled out because, particularly in a situation where it’s very difficult to assess some of the new vaccines coming along because there’s not much disease around, it could be one of the ways we could get that answer more quickly.”
Others are more cautious and say it would be impossible to launch such a trial in the absence of robust treatments.
In the US, a campaign group 1DaySooner, has set up a website to demonstrate public support for challenge trials, which has signed up more than 14,000 volunteers from 102 countries who say they would be prepared to participate.
Sophie Rose, a Stanford graduate who co-founded the campaign, who is currently based in Oxford, said she was motivated by the potential for widespread suffering and loss of life posed by the pandemic. “As a young, healthy 22-year-old, I feel that volunteering to participate in a challenge trial … could make a non-trivial positive impact on society,” she said.
There are already efforts in the UK and the US to pave the way for challenge trials, including testing dose escalation in animal studies. However, Eyal argues these efforts need to move more urgently. “Because of the enormous public health burden that Covid is expected to have … we don’t want to be in a situation where we decide we want to [pursue challenge studies] but then have to wait three months resulting in an inordinate loss of human life,” he said.
