Sen. Mitt Romney, Utah Republican, called Wednesday for President Trump<\/a> to stop pushing a conspiracy theory accusing MSNBC<\/a> host and former Rep. Joe Scarborough of murder.<\/p>\n

Mr. Romney took to Twitter<\/a> to defend Mr. Scarborough in light of Mr. Trump<\/a> continuing to baselessly claim the \u201cMorning Joe\u201d host may have killed one of his congressional aides in 2001.<\/p>\n

The late staffer, Lori Klausutis, was working at Mr. Scarborough\u2019s office in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, when she fainted, hit her head and died, according to her autopsy results, which declared her death to be an accident.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump<\/a> has tweeted several times recently that investigators should open a \u201ccold case\u201d to determine whether Mr. Scarborough was involved in the incident, however, including as recently as Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n

Responding on Twitter<\/a> shortly afterward, Mr. Romney urged the president to stop spreading the conspiracy theory to spare the aide\u2019s widower Timothy J. Klausutis the anguish it brings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know Joe Scarborough. Joe is a friend of mine. I don\u2019t know T.J. Klausutis. Joe can weather vile, baseless accusations but T.J.? His heart is breaking. Enough already,\u201d Mr. Romney tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump<\/a> had not responded to the senator\u2019s tweet as of early Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Mr. Klausutis asked Twitter<\/a> last week to remove the president\u2019s older tweets about his wife\u2019s death, citing violations of the company\u2019s community rules and terms of service.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m asking you to intervene in this instance because the President of the United States has taken something that does not belong him\u2014the memory of my dead wife and perverted it for perceived political gain,\u201d he asked Twitter<\/a>. \u201cMy wife deserves better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Twitter<\/a> said Monday that tweets would remain, adding it was \u201cdeeply sorry about the pain these statements, and the attention they are drawing, are causing the family.\u201d<\/p>\n
