Long Island GOP Rep. Pete King on Wednesday ripped Mitch McConnell as the “Marie Antoinette of the Senate” after the Bulk Leader suggested struggling states go bankrupt in the middle of the coronavirus crisis.
King was reacting to McConnell’s discuss a radio talk show earlier in the day where the senator dismissed the concept of more federal help to states, declaring guvs “would love to have free cash.”
” McConnell’s dismissive remark that States ravaged by Coronavirus must go bankrupt instead of get the federal help they need and are worthy of is outrageous and indefensible,” King composed on Twitter.
” To say that it is ‘totally free money’ to supply funds for polices, firefighters and health care employees makes McConnell the Marie Antoinette of the Senate.”
Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France throughout the Reign of terror, allegedly responded derisively to the news that peasants were starving, stating, “Let them consume cake.”
Throughout the look on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” McConnell suggested that the federal government hit the “time out button” before administering more money to state and city government.
” All of us have governors no matter celebration who would love to have free cash,” McConnell stated on the broadcast.
McConnell instead stated that the states bore some duty for their financial obligation due to “pension programs” and said bankruptcy needs to be the first option.
” I would definitely favor allowing states to utilize the bankruptcy route,” he said. “It’s saved some cities, and there’s no excellent factor for it not to be offered.”
But McConnell lamented the reality that the country’s governors would insist on getting more aid during a pandemic that eliminated nearly 48,000 people across the country.
” My guess is their first option would be for the federal government to obtain money from future generations to send it down to them now so they don’t have to do that,” he said. “That’s not something I’m going to be in favor of.”
