A handcuffed Florida<\/a> man in police custody<\/a> drowned on Sunday after he broke free from an officer and jumped into the Boca Ciega Bay, according to authorities.<\/p>\n

Donnie Brownlow Jr., 33, had been arrested by police who\u00a0responded Sunday evening\u00a0to reports of a\u00a0domestic disturbance in Treasure Island, which is near Tampa Bay.<\/p>\n

Brownlow was arrested\u00a0for domestic battery, obstruction, felony driving while license\u00a0suspected or revoked\u00a0and violation of probation.\u00a0He was then taken to the Treasure Island Police Department to wait for a jail transport van.<\/p>\n

\n Donnie Brownlow Jr., 33,\u00a0was transported to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead around 9:40 p.m.

“Detectives say while being escorted to the transport van and in handcuffs, Brownlow broke free from the officer, ran toward Boca Ciega Bay and jumped into the water,” according to a news release<\/a> by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.<\/p>\n

Paramedics would pull Brownlow from the water and performed CPR, deputies said.\u00a0He was then transported to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead around 9:40 p.m.<\/p>\n

The Medical Examiner\u2019s Office will conduct\u00a0an autopsy, although the sheriff’s office said his death does not appear to be suspicious in nature. An investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n
