Bill Gates<\/a> is siding with President Trump,<\/a> saying US schools should reopen in the fall despite the continued spread of the coronavirus<\/a> \u2014 claiming \u201cthe benefits outweigh the costs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a big believer that for young children, the benefits in almost every location \u2014 particularly if you can protect the teachers as well \u2014 the benefits outweigh the costs,\u201d the billionaire philanthropist\u00a0said on CNBC\u2019s \u201cSquawk Box\u201d<\/a>\u00a0in an interview aired Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs you get up to age, like, 13 and higher, then you\u2019ll have to look at your locale to decide what you\u2019ll do with high schools,\u201d Gates said. \u201cAnd if they\u2019re not in, then you have to put massive effort into trying to get there to be continued learning online.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comments come as Trump continues to push for schools to reopen in September, warning that students are falling behind in their education after months of at-home learning due to the coronavirus lockdown.<\/p>\n

School districts throughout the country have been grappling with the decision in recent months, after locking up classes in March.<\/p>\n

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week\u00a0released long-awaited guidance<\/a>\u00a0on reopening schoolhouses amid a resurgence of the global pandemic in many parts of the country, urging intense cleaning of classrooms, masks, and a limit in social interaction for students.<\/p>\n

In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio is calling for a mixed plan of in-school and home instruction starting Sept. 10 \u2014 despite\u00a0a plan released this week<\/a>\u00a0by Public Advocate Jumaane Williams that calls for a slower return to class.<\/p>\n

Two of California\u2019s largest school systems, in Los Angeles and San Diego, have announced plans to begin the fall semester entirely online.<\/p>\n

But Gates, whose charitable foundation has pumped into research for a coronavirus vaccine, said a return to school is vital, particularly for students in low-income and minority communities, who have been hard hit by the virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur foundation has revamped our education work to really jump in and help,\u201d he said. \u201cMake sure that minority students and low-income students aren\u2019t suffering the most throughout all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n
