Most Southern states now report data about coronavirus cases in state-licensed nursing homes, but not Alabama.
Mississippi became the latest state required to publish the number of coronavirus cases in each facility after a judge’s ruling on Tuesday. Now Alabama and Texas will be the only Southern states to keep that information secret.
More than 130 nursing homes in Alabama have reported cases of COVID-19 in residents or workers, according to the Alabama Nursing Home Association. Nursing homes are required to report cases of COVID-19 to the county health department, Alabama Department of Public Health, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, residents, staff and resident representatives (often family members). AL.com has compiled a list of 60 reported by news organizations.
Case numbers change constantly, so current totals may not be accurately reflected in the data.
