After criticism, NY begins identifying some nursing homes with coronavirus deaths
identifying some New York nursing homes where residents have died of coronavirus.

Most of the homes are in the New York City area. Cobble Hill Health Center in Brooklyn has had 55 deaths, the most of any nursing home in the state.

The state said it is not identifying nursing homes with fewer than five deaths for privacy purposes. As a result, it did not identify a nursing home in Onondaga County and a home in Oneida County which have each had one coronavirus death.

In Erie County, there have been 11 deaths at Garden Gate Health Care Facility, nine at Harris Hill Nursing Facility and six at Father Baker Manor. In Monroe County, there have been eight deaths at St. John’s Health Care Corp.

New York released the information three days after Syracuse.com reported the state was refusing to identify nursing homes with coronavirus cases and deaths at a time when the virus is rapidly spreading through nursing homes. A Syracuse.com editorial published Thursday criticized the state for keeping this information secret.

At least 16 other states are publicly identifying nursing homes and assisted living centers with coronavirus cases.

There have been more than 5,650 coronavirus cases in New York nursing homes and more than 3,000 deaths among nursing home residents.

Frail, elderly nursing home residents are at extremely high risk of catching the potentially deadly infection.

Earlier this week New York ordered nursing homes, assisted living centers and adult homes to inform residents’ families within 24 hours whenever there is a positive coronavirus case or death in their facilities.
