Members who witnessed the clash described it as a \u201ccoordinated attack\u201d led by Reps. The lawmakers argue Cheney\u2019s response was antagonistic and led others to join the criticisms of the third-ranking GOP leader.<\/p>\n

The Hill spoke to 20 House Republican lawmakers about the internal conversation. The voices differ over what will come next, with some describing it as a momentary spurt of bad blood and others saying it will be difficult for Cheney, who has been seen as a potential future GOP Speaker, to rise higher in the conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe did irreparable damage to her career in the House by the way she handled that,\u201d one senior Republican source told The Hill. \u201cIn all my years in Congress, it was the most intensive since the John Boehner<\/a>\"\"<\/img>John Andrew Boehner<\/a>Lott says lobbying firm cut ties to prevent him from taking clients<\/a> Lobbying firm cuts ties to Trent Lott amid national anti-racism protests<\/a> Bush, Romney won’t support Trump reelection: NYT<\/a> MORE<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others dismissed such arguments.<\/p>\n

\u201cA calculated political hit job in one conference meeting does not destroy a person\u2019s career,\u201d Rep. Still, members say the confrontation has a broader meaning in terms of the 2020 presidential race and in future leadership races as the GOP worries about November. Trump is down in the polls to presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden<\/a>\"\"<\/img>Joe Biden<\/a>The Hill’s Campaign Report: Campaigns prepare for homestretch run to Election Day<\/a> Charlamagne tha God rips Biden: ‘Shut the eff up forever’<\/a> Hogan stakes claim to big-tent Republicanism with critiques of Trump<\/a> MORE<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, and while they aren\u2019t talking about it publicly, Republicans are worried they could lose the Senate and White House this fall as well as remain in the minority in the House.<\/p>\n

Some GOP lawmakers viewed Cheney\u2019s growing criticism of the president as a sign she\u2019s trying to distinguish herself from both Trump and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy<\/a>\"\"<\/img>Kevin Owen McCarthy<\/a>McCarthy says Ocasio-Cortez should accept Yoho’s apology<\/a> Trump blames Democrats after GOP rejects payroll-tax cut<\/a> The Hill’s 12:30 Report – Presented by Facebook – Mnuchin previews GOP coronavirus relief package<\/a> MORE<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> (R-Calif.), who some argue has tied himself too closely to the president.<\/p>\n

But Cheney has dismissed allegations she isn\u2019t supportive enough of the president and that her disagreements with his policies derail GOP messaging efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s no secret at all that I’ve got some foreign policy differences with the president,\u201d Cheney told The Hill on Thursday. \u201cWe have a variety of differences within our conference and I think that makes us strong. And I look forward to making sure that we do whatever we can to get the majority back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other lawmakers said Cheney has been clear in charting a path apart from Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cLiz has decided to carve out her own path in an attempt to define Republican Party post-Trump,\u201d one GOP lawmaker said. \u201cShe believes McCarthy and Scalise become \u2018lame duck\u2019 leaders if we fail to secure the majority [and that they] could be pushed out,\u201d the source added, referring to House Minority Whip Steve Scalise<\/a>\"\"<\/img>Stephen (Steve) Joseph Scalise<\/a>The Hill’s Morning Report – Presented by Facebook – Trump-the-briefer struggles with COVID-19 facts<\/a> House votes to remove Confederate statues from Capitol<\/a> House votes to repeal Trump travel ban<\/a> MORE<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> (R-La.).<\/p>\n

Trump publicly criticized Cheney after the Tuesday blowout.<\/p>\n

\u201cLiz Cheney is only upset because I have been actively getting our great and beautiful Country out of the ridiculous and costly Endless Wars,\u201d Trump tweeted Thursday<\/a>, referencing former Vice President Dick Cheney\u2019s backing of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.<\/p>\n

Afghanistan has been a significant dispute between Trump and the Cheneys, along with other foreign policy matters.<\/p>\n

Trump also retweeted Gaetz\u2019s public call on Twitter for her to step down or be removed from leadership.<\/p>\n

Following the attacks on Twitter, McCarthy came to Cheney\u2019s defense, telling reporters there is \u201cabsolutely no question\u201d that Cheney should remain in leadership.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some lawmakers say Cheney would face various problems if she ever challenged McCarthy.<\/p>\n

These critics say that she rubs some members the wrong way by coming off as arrogant or entitled. McCarthy, in contrast, glad-hands and seeks to win over members with a charm offensive.<\/p>\n

But sources close to Cheney deny that she has any plan to challenge McCarthy.<\/p>\n

They noted how Cheney in January voiced her support to “make Kevin McCarthy the next Speaker of the House,” right as she announced to her colleagues that she would not run for the Senate, chalking up these remarks as proof that she is not motivated to challenge McCarthy.<\/p>\n

\u201cLiz and Kevin are friends and they both respect each other,\u201d one source close to Cheney said. \u201cAnyone trying to pit them against one another is baselessly trying to stir the pot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another elephant in the room is fundraising.\u00a0<\/p>\n

McCarthy is a prolific fundraiser for his colleagues, which could help him survive if November does go poorly for Republicans.<\/p>\n

Since 2019, McCarthy has given the House GOP\u2019s campaign arm more than $27 million in fundraising, followed by Scalise who has transferred $9.37 million. Cheney has trailed far behind, sending roughly $1.5 million to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). \u00a0<\/p>\n

One source close to Cheney, when pressed about the difference in these numbers, said in addition to contributing to the NRCC, she focused her time and attention on doing events and donating to individual campaigns.<\/p>\n

Another huge factor is gender.<\/p>\n

Cheney is one of 13 women in the House GOP conference and is the highest-ranking woman in GOP leadership. This makes it unlikely she would be pushed out of leadership, despite statements this week by Goetz.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one has enough courage to push out the only woman in leadership,\u201d added another senior Republican. \u201cThey are trying to cut her legs out and weaken her from moving up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Multiple conservatives also say that there aren\u2019t any active recruitment efforts to find someone to challenge her during next year\u2019s leadership races. These voices say Cheney retains support from a large portion of the conference.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some members huffed at what they viewed as hypocrisy from the far-right flank who took part in the conference criticism, but have also previously voiced opposition to the president\u2019s policies or controversial remarks.<\/p>\n

They also balked at the idea that Cheney should somehow quiet her opinion, saying she is committed to her foreign policy beliefs and is not suddenly using them as part of a political scheme.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve always had this tension in our party, going back to the late 40s, early 50s between a more isolationist view and a more international hawkish view,\u201d said Rep. The Freedom Caucus has a known reputation for being a thorn in leadership\u2019s side, particularly when they are in the majority. Some sources argued that time and political circumstances may bridge the divide, pointing to McCarthy\u2019s improved relations with the Freedom Caucus over the past two years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t think [moving up in leadership is unattainable],\u201d said one GOP lawmaker. \u201cShe’s obviously got to repair some of the damage done with certain members.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
