Greenfield police to cite people not wearing masks

Greenfield police say this weekend they will begin cracking down on people who are flagrantly violating the county health order to wear masks or face coverings when out shopping or conducting business. “You get some individuals that they don’t care about it so they’re putting yours and mine and everybody’s health at risk when they choose not to wear a mask or do what they’re supposed to be doing so we as a city can crack down on that and that’s what we plan on doing,” said Greenfield mayor Lance Walker. Since the county order was issued this month, Greenfield police becomes one of the first police agencies to come out and say they are now taking a tougher stance. Many departments have relied on education and voluntary compliance, but Greenfield council members told police that they’re getting a lot of complaints from constituents. “For example whereby people are complaining other people are putting everyone at risk by not wearing their masks,” said city manager Paul Wood. Tuesday the city council voted 5-0 to direct police to start citing violators. On Friday police via social media warned people they will be subject to a misdemeanor citation and a fine of up to $1,000. “Paying visits to stores that are open and observing and hopefully taking a pretty close look and a firm look to get the message across as to how important it is,” said Wood. And he added, “city council just wants to make sure that we’re doing everything we can in order to make sure that we get through this and come out the other side as healthy as possible.”
