Rep. Ilhan Omar<\/a> became the most prominent Democrat to say she believes Tara Reade<\/a>\u2019s sex-assault accusations against presumed Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Minnesota Democrat made the remarks in an interview with The Sunday Times, but on Monday said on Twitter that she plans to vote for Mr. Biden<\/a> anyway \u2014 contrary to his own advice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do believe Reade<\/a>,\u201d Ms. Omar<\/a> told<\/a> the British broadsheet. \u201cJustice can be delayed but should never be denied.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that if it were up to her, a supporter of socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders, Mr. Biden<\/a> wouldn\u2019t be the nominee.<\/p>\n

Faced with social-media backlash, she backtracked on that some the day after publication.<\/p>\n

\u201cBelieving survivors is consistent with my values. Yes, I endorsed against Biden<\/a> and I didn\u2019t pick him as our nominee. With that said, in this interview I did on May 6th, we talked about that and quotes aren\u2019t always in context. I will vote for him and help him defeat Trump,\u201d she wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That isn\u2019t the standard Mr. Biden<\/a> has sought, though, instead flatly denying the accusation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they believe Tara Reade<\/a>, they probably shouldn\u2019t vote for me,\u201d he said on MSNBC. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t vote for me if I believed Tara Reade<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most high-profile Democratic women \u2014 for example, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Elizabeth Warren \u2014 have flatly said they believe Mr. Biden<\/a>\u2019s denials over Ms. Reade<\/a>\u2019s accusation, even when their statements during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings are brought to their attention.<\/p>\n

While Ms. Omar<\/a>\u2019s tweet spoke obliquely about context, she did not elaborate on what the Sunday Times might\u2019ve misconstrued.<\/p>\n

Her campaign spokesman confirmed<\/a> to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune on Monday that the statements attributed to her were accurate.<\/p>\n

The Minnesota paper also reported that Ms. Omar<\/a>\u2019s challenger in the Aug. 11 Democratic primary had criticized her for believing Ms. Reade<\/a>, accusing the Somali-born Muslim of promoting right-wing smears.<\/p>\n

\u201cIlhan Omar<\/a>\u2019s insistence on propping up a serious allegation without evidence against our presumptive Democratic presidential nominee is not only wrongheaded but dangerous,\u201d Antone Melton-Meaux said in a statement Monday.<\/p>\n

He said that \u201ccasually promoting right wing attacks to smear Vice President Biden<\/a> because he\u2019s not your preferred kind of Democrat shows that Rep. Omar<\/a> does not take seriously the stakes of this election.\u201d<\/p>\n
