Blue Angels, Thunderbird flights over NJ

The Navy’s Blue Angels and Air Force’s Thunderbirds will fly over New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia to salute first responders and hospital workers working on the front lines of the coronavirus outbreak.

New Jersey residents will get a glimpse of the Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy Blue Angels soaring across the skies Tuesday in tribute to medical workers and other first responders on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

Officials said residents will be able to see the show from their homes and should continue to avoid public gatherings in keeping with Gov. Phil Murphy’s stay-at-home executive orders.

The flights will pass by five cities in three states — Newark, New York City, Trenton, Philadelphia and Wilmington — starting around noon near the George Washington Bridge.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. John Caldwell is serving as mission commander for the flyover.

“We hope to give Americans a touching display of American resolve that honors those serving on the frontline of our fight with COVID-19,” Caldwell said.

Thunderbirds are Go - almost

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds perform the “Diamond pass and review.”

Here’s how it will look, according to a description provided by the Air Force:

There will be a few seconds of jet noise as 12 close-flying aircraft pass overhead. The first flyover will start around noon in the vicinity of the George Washington Bridge.

From there, the planes will head south along the Hudson River and over parts of Bergen, Hudson, Union and Essex counties in New Jersey, turn east toward New York City and above parts of Connecticut and Long Island before concluding at 12:40 p.m. near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

The second flyover is scheduled to last 30 minutes.

It will start at 1:45 p.m. over Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in Burlington County with planes heading northwest toward the Trenton area, along the Delaware River into Philadelphia and its Pennsylvania suburbs. The flyover will conclude in the vicinity of Wilmington around 2:15 p.m. after soaring above parts of Gloucester and Salem County.

Viewers are encouraged to tag the flyover on social media with the hashtag #AmericaStrong.
