Tulsa, Okla. police<\/a> Maj. Travis Yates told “Tucker Carlson Tonight<\/a>”\u00a0Friday that he is “extremely concerned” for the future of law enforcement amid ongoing backlash following the death of George Floyd<\/a> and the rise of the “defund the police” movement.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Yates published a column on the website\u00a0LawOfficer.com headlined<\/a>, “America, We Are Leaving.”<\/p>\n

“I wouldn\u2019t wish this job on my worst enemy,” Yates wrote.\u00a0“I would never send anyone I cared about into the hell that this profession has become … I used to talk cops out of leaving the job. Now I\u2019m encouraging them. It\u2019s over, America. You finally did it You aren\u2019t going to have to abolish the police, we won\u2019t be around for it.”<\/p>\n

“Officers are afraid to speak\u00a0out, they are afraid to talk,” Yates told Carlson.\u00a0“You are only your next call away from\u00a0being canceled or destroyed, and so\u00a0officers feel very limited.\u00a0I think citizens do, too, and we\u00a0had just as many citizens\u00a0comment on that article and send\u00a0us emails.”<\/p>\n

Yates told Carlson that held felt morale among law enforcement officers “was really low” following the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown by then-Ferguson, Mo. police officer Darren Wilson.<\/p>\n

“As everybody knows, President Obama’s administration\u00a0found no evidence of wrongdoing\u00a0in Ferguson even though the\u00a0narrative is quite\u00a0different …,” he said.\u00a0“We were making a\u00a0resurgence in recent years\u00a0and this [George Floyd’s death and the aftermath] has been devastating. This has been Ferguson times 1,000.\u00a0Every department, every officer\u00a0you talk to is looking to leave.”<\/p>\n

Yates added that some officers looking who want to leave the profession are stuck because they haven’t worked enough years to earn a pension.<\/p>\n

“The officers with 15 years on can’t leave yet,” he said. “I’ve heard from hundreds of\u00a0people that are discouraged. They love the job, they\u00a0love the community, they love\u00a0the people, but all this\u00a0chaos is\u00a0wearing them every single day.”<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Yates came under fire for remarks he made while being interviewed for a local podcast in Tulsa. During the interview, he cited research from former Harvard University economist Roland Fryer, Heather Mac Donald of the conservative think tank Manhattan Institute\u00a0and the National Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of their research says we are shooting African-Americans 24 percent less than we probably ought to be based on the crimes being committed,\u201d said Yates. The Tulsa Police Department said Wednesday that the matter had been referred to its Internal Affairs Unit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
